For the motion controls: I've found them to be MUCH more responsive when play with the grip, having almost 100% accuracy (and the times I DO mess up, I feel it's legitimately due to doing the motion incorrectly with a bad starting position). The only downside is you can't reliably do a straight throw, so you'll have to use the Y button for that.
You know what could fix the only problem: an option to change the controls. This can be done with an update and people could assign their own button combinations for each move. Nintendo you did it for ARMS, now it should be done for Odyssey.
I'm 8 years old again, playing Super Mario 64. A true joy to experience. I think the issue of motion controls is overstated for sure. In my experience so far I do not use the homing much at all, Y suffices for climbing faster and throwing Cappie, although I have pretty good aim which negates the need for homing. I understand why somebody would take issue with it though.
Yea same. I didn't know there were motion controls till the day before so I got a little worried but they're not NEARLY as bad as I thought. The only move you sort-of, kind-of need is the homing attack because its makes throwing Cappy way easier, and the action to execute it is a very simple backwards motion that is detected very reliably. The only motion that's giving me trouble is the spin throw, as the game has trouble distinguishing it from a normal throw, though I've gotten quite used to it. And there are only a few specific instances where a spin throw would make a difference versus a normal throw so it's totally forgivable. I also understand you feeling like a kid again, as I have very fond memories of 100%-ing Super Mario 64 DS, and excitedly playing Galaxy for the first time! I'm 18 BTW.
@Atomic³, You can spin throw without motion controls by having Mario spin himself, like in Sunshine and 3D World ;) The controls did feel weird at first, but after I managed to chain : Jump>Throw>Dive>Hat bounce>Throw>Dive, it felt super satisfying. Might be the most fun I've had with 3D Mario yet, despite being the game I've the died the most x)
VonFirflirch Just thinking about whay speedrunners will do with that makes me giddy. If I can do that, which I can and I'm an average Joe, than what will they do?
I can't believe you didn't talk about the amazing HD Rumble in this game FYI you can roll your hat on the ground by ground pounding and after hitting the ground, throwing your cap
I’ve been pretty satisfied with the pro controller and motion controls set off. Hopefully there’s a patch, but it’s not bugging me as much as I thought it would at first
I'm pretty sure there's a moon in Tostarena after you beat the main game that requires you use a Bullet Bill to break a box, and the box is so far away that you can only make it by shaking the controller to boost yourself.
What are you talking about? The textures, models and lighting far surpass Galaxy. Even if the games shared the same art style, there'd still be a huge difference.
I hope this comment isn't insensitive, but last night I had a dream that Arlo was actually a small, disabled girl, who was a master at voice manipulation and video editing ... seriously.
My biggest and really only complaint with Odyssey is that some of the more unique and creative kingdoms feel kind of small and under-utilized. I LOVE the look of the hat kingdom and want to see more, I wish they were wider and more open. A really cool medieval level later on, makes me sad that its just a bridge and a tiny platform because I desperately want to run around that world.
I started playing with split joy cons, and got used to it well enough. I still have some difficulty getting the spin to work properly, but of course part of the thing with motion controls is learning how fast and at what angles the controllers want you to do the motions. Then I had to go to the laundromat and brought my Switch, and tried playing in handheld mode. Couldn't get used to the sorta motion jerking the console around controls, so I popped the kickstand out and played it in tabletop mode with split joy cons. First time I ever chose to play a game like that, I'm nearsighted and prefer handheld mode almost all the time, or pro controller docked mode. With Odyssey, it's split joy cons or bust for me.
I use the spin throw all the time with my pro controller. Pro controler can still do most the motion controls, just takes a bit to get used too. But I agree I wish it had button combos for all of the motion moves.
Trevin Taylor I could pull off every single motion with the pro controller. If you know how to use the controller than it's really not that difficult to use motion.
I almost never play handheld. Too bad I have to wait for a week until it arrives here in Brazil. It always takes about a week for games to arrive here because Nintendo doesn't license anything to Brazil anymore since 2 years ago so it has to be imported and that takes time and it's expensive. Gah! Spoilers! I didn't realize you got to play as Mario! *EDIT:* As I was thinking about this I just realized how insane it would be if Nintendo released a Zelda game where you got to play as Zelda, and how every single review would spoil the game so badly.
Robert Dubrov A game where you play as zelda the entire time would be so amazing. Maybe Link did what he could against ganon but then died in an effort to prevent ganon from being stronger or something else importand is. But he left behind clues of how to defeat ganon. Maybe Link was alive like 10 years ago and is a lot older than the Zelda. In the end it will be because of links courage and guidance to zelda that ganon is defeated.
I've thought that they could do a Mario game where at the start Mario gets kidnapped, and it's up to Peach to get off her arse and save him. If only for the reaction that it would cause.
I actually really like the motion controls. I don't see the problem with them besides handheld. There should be a button option, but I would still use the motion because I enjoy it.
Lucas Alland Well it's an issue for me since the Switch is my handheld console. Damnit Nintendo why can't you let me play this game? Looks so nive as well.
I didn't find the motion controls to be that big an issue, but I do kind of hope they do something about being able to throw your cap up and down. As far as I can tell, there's not really any way to do these without buttons, and the motion controls are too finicky to use them in midair during a string of jumps. I didn't have a problem with the spin attack and homing thing though, it's easy to just start spinning right away and flicking the controller for homing isn't much of an issue even in handheld mode.
SACleere I think it is because this format spends a majority of the video in the same place on the same topic while the usual set up covers more ground in the same amount of time
I was laughing myself silly listening to you talking about "jerking the controller all over the place" and how after awhile it became "really uncomfortable". You gotta take a rest man. ;D
I am on world five I have never used the homing attack, the spin is easy when you learn to spin with the stick, and the up and down attack I barley have ever used. It will be fine
It was good, took me 8 hours to complete and now I'm trying to unlock the bonus world. I just didn't think bowser would come out as a lesbian at the end.
Hey Arlo, just to comment about the joy-con motion controls. Don't worry, they are quite awkward at first and they do make you worry if they are going to ruin the experience, but(for me at least)after a hour or-so of playing, you do get used to them. Also, yes, playing in handheld mode in annoying because you have to jerk the entire Switch. Hope this comment helped.
I played the game for about an hour but somehow 4 hours had passed rather than the 1 it felt like. 72 moons in and it's exactly what I wanted it to be.
If you aren't already, hold your hands more level. It's not nearly as annoying as it sounds, trust me. it gets much easier. Just takes a while to get used to. Seriously, you don't need to be scared m8. :D
Dezi What moves do you need motion for? You can do the spin throw, up throw and down throw without motion easily and if you know how to aim (or use spin) you'll never need homing.
Another note on the roll move: it is not locked to downhill. By wildly shaking the controller, you gain a massive speed bonus that even lets you roll up hills. I haven't replicated it without using motion controls though.
I got About halfway in now and I played it exclusively in handheld mode. It's not that much of a problem. Once you adapt to your aim, the x is all you need. There are some 'hit all flowers at the same time' challenges, but those are rare and always in a safe place so you can afford to not look at the screen while you're throwing your beloved 300 dollar machine without any straps from left to right. I wish nintendo would have mapped at least the spin cap to the buttons. The up and down attack I haven't used or missed so those are fine as just motion. It's pretty stupid of them.
This game brings back my childhood memories with Super Mario 64. Really good review Arlo as always. I can't wait until I get my hands on the Switch and this game.
also can't afford a switch. i am kinda sad. feels like everyone else gets to play odyssey and breath of the wild. the only time i played was on my friends for 15 minutes and it was great. but i might not experience it very soon :'( edit: thanks for the support guys will try to get either a wii u or a switch and wii u is also pretty good at my standards too alot of great games enjoyed it when i played, so i might save up gonna ask for giftcards from family which ones should i ask for? the price for a switch as of 11/1/17 is $350, so maybe not that but please send your suggestions i would like some input. input for 2 things please switch or wii u and what kind of giftcard? thanks again for your positive comments and your support
FancyCookie456 I'm sure many people are in the same boat as you, I know I am. I'm hoping to get one for Christmas or the $200 I need to get one. If not, I will finally be able to get a job in December. Im gonna have to wait a couple more months but I'll hang in there. Good luck to you getting a Switch soon and hang in there!
FancyCookie456 whether you play now, or in a year, or three years, the gameplay will be the same. Wait and save your money. I’ll get one in a few years when they cost pennies on the dollar.
Learning the "really long long jump" makes exploring the kingdoms so much fun. (Long jump, throw cap, lunge to your cap, bounce off, throw again, lunge again)
That move you pulled was awesome that made mario go so far! I feel like we need a little video in the bottom right showing us what your hands are doing then
Here we go, off the rails Don't you know it's time to raise our sails? It's freedom like you never knew Don't need bags, or a pass Say the word, I'll be there in a flash You could say my hat is off to you Oh, we can zoom all the way to the moon From this great wide wacky world Jump with me, grab coins with me Oh yeah! This has been the Mario game I’ve wanted for quite some time now. When I’m not playing I want to play. When I am playing I have to remind myself to take breaks for food, bathroom, sleep. The best part is that I feel rewarded for exploring. When you start a level you get the traditional flyover-hey-that-looks-like-where-you-want-to-go cinematic. But then if you don’t go over there, you’re not punished. There’s almost always something interesting tucked away in the out of the way places. You are allowed, even encouraged, to explore off the beaten path. I’m having so much fun!
So glad Nintendo’s seeing and noticing your channel, Arlo! If they sent you a free copy of Odyssey, they might’ve seen the other vids you made. And maybe they might make dlc for Mariokart 8 Deluxe, But IDK. Like you said, Nintendo has a way of just doing the opposite of what you expect so I wouldn’t know. But whatever. Anyway, I hope you’re having a good day, Arlo.
That aerial bit with Cappy you can actually do twice in a row. Throw, leap onto Cappy, jump off him, throw AGAIN, then jump dive onto Cappy to finish, giving you one heck of a distance to jump.
I don't like the idea of jerking around the console in hand held mode. That said, I haven't seen the need to throw the cap up or down at all. Wish we could do the homing throw by hitting the cap throw twice
LightningStarSC I’m not saying it’s a bad gam I LOVE THE GAME SO FAR but since Nintendo was saying it was a sand box like sunshine and 64 I was so excited and had my HOPE UP SO HIGH Not saying galaxy is bad btw
Madara God Of Thickness this is just a first impression, but i feel like it's a good blend of the two styles because the game does lead you towards specific moons which can make it seem linear, but you can stray off that path and get other moons. (I also like how it doesnt kick you out of the level every time you get a moon)
Love this game so much. The first game I played was Mario 64 on the DS, and I loved it so much :) Also, the post game is absolutely HUGE. Awesome vid as always Arlo :)
Thank you for not spoiling. Found your videos like a month or so ago and love them! That said I already bought my copy of odyssey. I just don’t have my switch yet since I am paying for it on layaway. Should have it a few weeks though ^.^
Alternate Buttons also, what if someone just doesn’t like motion control in general? Even if they are “fine” motion controls, many people just don’t like motion control.
This was the absolute first thing I noticed, I'm happy that you realised it right away, maybe Nintendo will fix it eventually if enough people complain about it. There is definitely enough unused buttons for it.
Tip for throwing cappy in specific directions: you move the whole joycon straight up or down or to the side, don't change the rotation of the controller, just do a pure translation. Knowing this, it becomes easier to throw up or down. This also works for that extra shake after you have thrown him.
Arlo, I can honestly tell you.. The motion controls are a non-issue. I played most of the game without using them, save the side-flick for the spin throw. And the homing throw after I ran through the story the first time. That's really all I 'needed' to use to get through the game.
sort of was, not really tho. long story short my friends parents where jealous that he got me an expensive gift and not them so they stole it and sold it... least to say it was not a fun time.
yea. and i sadly can't do anything about it unless i want to damage the friendship between me and my friend. the parents are megalomaniacs that's for sure.
I disagree. Sunshine most definitely has the best fluid controls for Mario's movements and jumping athletic abilities. It also helps that FLUDD is handle properly to keep the pace going and doesn't break momentum too badly. I can't even count the number of times I parkour all over Isle Defino and various other landscapes with these controls. Odyssey, from my experience with the demo, seems to almost mirrored the same fluid movements, only I guess Mario moves a bit slower compare to Sunshine.
In theory, FLUDD should make everything flow well. In practice, its extremely janky. FLUDD actually slows your momentum when you start hovering, for example. Mario is twitchy to a fault and you can easily over-correct when platforming. Odyssey so far seems to have much more precise movement, and you can quickly string together different moves for advanced jumping techniques. The only glaring issue seems to be the motion controls.
Yeah, Sunshine had pretty good control and movement, but I don't remember taking notice of how good it was like I am with Odyssey's movement. The momentum and rolling really set Odyssey apart. I still wish that, one of these days, they'd let the long jump be as substantial as it was in 64, though.
I've been playing quite a while now without using the motion controls at all, playing with the pro controller. It works just fine. Basically, you don't even need the motion control hat-moves. At least not that often
I got to try Super Mario Odyssey for the first time this week. I walked into a local retailer and to my delight/surprise I found a playable switch demo (weird because at one point all the playable demos were being removed in favour of basic video screens) The demo world was the dessert/ice stage and the first thing that impressed me was just how detailed the effects were, I knew about him running through fog and collect fog on him, but it surprised me when I ground pounded and he came back up covered in red sand, it took me back to the awesome feeling of playing the first 3D game and seeing a character leaving wet footprints. The second thing that kind of awed me was the kind of hybridization of the open world and the linear level concepts. What I mean is that when you start it obviously feels very open world, go anywhere and I could collect moons as a go, but the presence of the checkpoints and the fact that there is kind of a 'goal moon' given by level title creates this sense of linearity which definitely felt more like a 'Mario Land' kinda stage. It struck a balance that I felt was very well done. The demo had a limited time, I played it twice and the first time I just meandered and figured things out, but time ran out before I got the main moon, so the second playthrough I went straight for the main moon, which then revealed the next main moon. I didn't find the controls to be as bad as Arlo, now that said I wasn't able in the short time to get the upwards-hat-throw, but I do think that the very useful spin-hat-throw was actually quite easy to do by rotating the joystick, it felt like a move from Sunshine? or was it playing Galaxy where you could do a spin without using the motion control? Anyway, I can't wait to play more!
I found that the best way to do the spin move on pro controller was to quickly hold the controller by one grip, make a fast frisbee-throwing motion and snap it back into your hand. It registers as the spin move every time, and it is a lot less jarring than jerking both hands around.
Hey Arlo, just felt like giving you a heads up regarding the motion controls here: You can go just as fast with the rolling by holding down the Y button for a while and just quickly letting go before you press it down again and do so in a rythm of sorts. Think of it like holding the button to charge the roll each time. You can do a long throw by performing a ground pound and then throwing. I won't defend the homing mechanic or upward throw being waggle only but I have practically forgotten they exists for 10 hours. This should make handheld mode a lot more bearable.
The music on the first real level (Cascade Kingdom) was so adventurous and epic, combined with the ungodly amount of hype releasing literally made me cry.
The dive is used in the late game; it's practically mandatory for the true final stage. Also not using the motion controls only makes a handful of moons harder to get
You're pretty insightful, dude! Me personally, I don't think I'm gonna be bothered too much swinging the pro controller now and then to pull off a cool move. I played Wario Land: Shake It, so I kinda got used to silly things like that. But not being able to use these moves at all in handheld mode (at least not without swinging a $300 piece of hardware around) sounds brutal! The good news is they can always patch things, so maybe we can convince them to add another way to do this stuff? But I, uh... I do not volunteer making a video of myself swinging it in handheld mode, dropping, and breaking my console. That's a protest for rich people to make. Also, when I saw you having Mario roll on hills, my mind immediately defaulted to classic Sega Genesis Sonic rolling sounds. I'm not sure what this means, but I'm sure it's significant.
To my knowledge the only Cappy throw you can't do with standard controls is the vertical toss. You can roll it on the ground by hitting Y as you land a groundpound. The only time the motion controls become problematic is when you're capturing. They are absolutely not optional if you want full control. That sucks.
One thing ive noticed with the joycons is the travel distance of the sticks is short. It makes it harder to side jump and/or move slowly. Its like halfway between analogue and digital.
Arlo, I've played the entire story (no spoilers) No motion control moves are nessecary but I find it super fun to have it on the TV with seperate joycons and have the motion controls just as a casual thing you do if you want. I used the up and down throws one each when trying them out in this first kingdom
One good rotation of the stick is all you need to go spinning. You don't need to stop and "wind up" like in the video. Do it like you would Link's Whirlwind Slash. I definitely didn't know about that dive move though. I just figured i was missing from previous games. Glad its not only still in but very useful looking at that.
I’m surprised you’ve only got 3 likes after 3 years...
@@CartoonyAndor and only 30 after 6!
You know what could fix the only problem: an option to change the controls. This can be done with an update and people could assign their own button combinations for each move. Nintendo you did it for ARMS, now it should be done for Odyssey.
This
I'll just bump this a bit
I'd love that. It would actually make the GC controller usable with the game :D
This. I want button controls for the homing and spin cap attacks. I hate waggle.

Atomic³ It's easy to spin throw for me but I can't throw the cap up.
@Atomic³,
You can spin throw without motion controls by having Mario spin himself, like in Sunshine and 3D World ;)
The controls did feel weird at first, but after I managed to chain :

Wait, Y works for fast climb? That's good to know.
I can't believe you didn't talk about the amazing HD Rumble in this game
FYI you can roll your hat on the ground by ground pounding and after hitting the ground, throwing your cap
And throwing up can be done by crouching first i believe. I know I've done it somehow.
MegaAmberhill lol
I had no idea! Thanks for the tip!
Ok and that’s cool, but i want to be able to do that in the air like in the trailer
Every first party Switch game uses HD rumble pretty well if you ask me.
Hey! I thought this game was called “BUSSSHHHH EHHHH SHWABADOOBADA” according to you.
I’ve been pretty satisfied with the pro controller and motion controls set off. Hopefully there’s a patch, but it’s not bugging me as much as I thought it would at first
The motion controls are negligible. They're a cool addition but you can 100% the game just fine without them.
cros107 Can you? There's a moon in bonneton that I thought you needed to high jump.
Hmm there might be a few, but I didn't find any moons that required it, only secret coin stacks and stuff.
WyubPlays you can technically get them without it, but the shaking feature is easy asf, you can just shake your switch, or pro controller, or whatever
Phantom Drags
I'll wait for a comparison video with both on the same TV.
Well yeah. HD on the Switch should be better than SD on the Wii from 5-10 years ago.
Phantom Drags I like how no one can have a different opinion than you
Trevin Taylor It has nothing to do with opinions, though. The game objectively looks better than Galaxy. That's a fact.
Phantom Drags You'd have to define "better" before making that argument.
I hope this comment isn't insensitive, but last night I had a dream that Arlo was actually a small, disabled girl, who was a master at voice manipulation and video editing ... seriously.
I could see the other way around, to be honest.
You can also spin and then jump he jumps extremely high and floats
Sengan Thanks
Sengan If you throw your Cap while you spin you do that spinny attack
My biggest and really only complaint with Odyssey is that some of the more unique and creative kingdoms feel kind of small and under-utilized. LordFrz most isn’t good enough
You can perform a spin throw after having Mario spin manually.
Down throw is after landing from a ground pound, although it makes it a bit useless x)
Trevin Taylor I could pull off every single motion with the pro controller. If you know how to use the controller than it's really not that difficult to use motion.
Praise Kekistan it doesn’t matter if you haven’t had to, it should have been your choice, not theirs.
I LOVE MARIO ODYSSEY❤❤❤

Congrats. Take Good care of it.
Congrats! It's a beautiful piece of hardware.
CrazyWilder congrats dude! What games you get?
xboxpenguin870 Good question lol, should have thought to ask that myself.
You are now one of the joyconboyz. Wear that title with pride my child.
I get the concern about the motion controls. But so far in my experience, I got used to them in about 10 casual minutes of gameplay.
PopstarChamp we shouldn’t have to get used to them, they should be optional
Trevin Taylor they are lol
Not really. You do need them to collect certain moons and other collectibles. So if you hate motion controls, you're screwed.
How about portable mode mate? Are you confident about jerking your $300 tablet around?
Because I'm not.
it's probably an anti-piracy measure. How are you gonna jerk the joycon on a keyboard?
Thank you for not spoiling me. Now hopefully, I'm not spoiled by the comment section xD

alfasilverblade Prosafia *cough*
Robin The Paladin im afraid of typing that name, soo i wont.
Rest assured Nintendo will blacklist him
Prosafia ruined it for me :(
Prosafia is terrible!
I've been looking forward to your first impressions video all day.
I've been playing through the game since it came out and.....0_0 I loved every mili second
Gah! Spoilers! I didn't realize you got to play as Mario!
*EDIT:* As I was thinking about this I just realized how insane it would be if Nintendo released a Zelda game where you got to play as Zelda, and how every single review would spoil the game so badly.

Auto Correct That game never existed, just like the other two zelda games on that console.
Robert Dubrov There is a game where you control Zelda AND Link. It's called Spirit Tracks...
I've thought that they could do a Mario game where at the start Mario gets kidnapped, and it's up to Peach to get off her arse and save him. If only for the reaction that it would cause.
Steven Blyth You mean Super Princess Peach for the DS?
I actually really like the motion controls. I don't see the problem with them besides handheld. There should be a button option, but I would still use the motion because I enjoy it.
Lucas Alland buttons options exist for the cap spin and downward throw for sure.
Lucas Alland exactly the same with me. This might knock down Galaxy for my favourite game.. ever
Lucas Alland Well it's an issue for me since the Switch is my handheld console. Damnit Nintendo why can't you let me play this game? Looks so nive as well.
Lucas Alland hopefully Nintendo fixes this
I didn't find the motion controls to be that big an issue, but I do kind of hope they do something about being able to throw your cap up and down.
I think the other first impressions format is better
I agree
SACleere I think it is because this format spends a majority of the video in the same place on the same topic while the usual set up covers more ground in the same amount of time
I was laughing myself silly listening to you talking about "jerking the controller all over the place" and how after awhile it became "really uncomfortable". You gotta take a rest man. ;D
DariusQ or they shouldn’t require you to jerk the controls around
Trevin Taylor it's not required you don't have to use it
The Kirby Guy yes it literally is. They are required functions if you want to get certain moons, and they are bad
Does no one realize Darius made a jack-off joke?
Stephen Carter THANK YOU
Haha! I just streamed 2 hours of this game earlier and it's worth every penny!
Spicypicklez Gaming I really didn't like it seemed overhyped
Angry Commenter Your name fits your comment very well. Tbh, self advertising wasn't intended, that's just where I formed my opinions on the game.
The Imperfect Circle channel I was thinking the opposite of hype, but it's better than I thought probably my new favorite game or at least top 5.
Ninja penies are worthless they dont let them use so the game isnt worth it got it.
Spicypicklez Gaming yess
I am on world five I have never used the homing attack, the spin is easy when you learn to spin with the stick, and the up and down attack I barley have ever used. It will be fine
Agreed, I'm near the end of the story and didn't even know you could throw the hat up or down. The spin you can do on controls.
Phew Thanks, I’m getting the game for Christmas and some of this slightly worried me
I. Loved. This. Game
Gummykoala 23 you mean love? It wouldn't be loved it's not even been out for 24 hours
Gummykoala 23 LOV*ED*!? 😨😨
Gummykoala 23 ah, yes. Way back in the day when it came out. I barely remember it.
I made love to this game.
It's "I love this game" not I loved
It was good, took me 8 hours to complete and now I'm trying to unlock the bonus world.
I just didn't think bowser would come out as a lesbian at the end.
Andrew Meyer its 2017
Andrew Meyer you are so homophopic
Jusu wait out of curiosity, how is bowser lesbian? I’m confused did I miss something?
Jusu Why the fuck is every calling Andrew a homophobe? Bowser's a guy, he can't be lesbian, but he can be gay.
So Bowser comes out as a lesbian at the end? At what point did she come out as transgender?
What??? There are coins in this game???? ( ゚д゚)
SPOILERS fffffuuuuuu
there are also pruply coins
get spoild
Hey Arlo, just to comment about the joy-con motion controls. Don't worry, they are quite awkward at first and they do make you worry if they are going to ruin the experience, but(for me at least)after a hour or-so of playing, you do get used to them. Also, yes, playing in handheld mode in annoying because you have to jerk the entire Switch. Hope this comment helped.
Jecko2 I've played about 4 or 5 hours and it just makes me angrier and angrier everytime I have to waggle.. definitely not "used to it."
Mario the hedgehog. That’s all I saw when Mario rolls.
“Rolling around at the speed of sound, got places to go got to follow the bowser!”
Arlo you don't sound sick pfffft
I played the game for about an hour but somehow 4 hours had passed rather than the 1 it felt like.
72 moons in and it's exactly what I wanted it to be.
If you aren't already, hold your hands more level. It's not nearly as annoying as it sounds, trust me. it gets much easier. Just takes a while to get used to.
Seriously, you don't need to be scared m8. :D
Apex 721 I should be able to hold my hands however I’m comfortable.
Trevin Taylor You should also probably stop talking about a game like you've played it when you said you don't even have a switch. It's fine. Chill.
MeekMoose David as I mostly play handheld mode, no it isn't fine. I don't use most of the moves because it's annoying to move the whole switch around.
Dezi What moves do you need motion for? You can do the spin throw, up throw and down throw without motion easily and if you know how to aim (or use spin) you'll never need homing.
Ombro it doesn’t matter if I need it. They are taking away my option to use it if I choose.
The motion controls don't bother me that much, but I do see your point about handheld mode.
Nintendo gave you a free copy of Odyssey AND a free plabghuh? No fair!
I don't think plabghuhs are in stores yet--not even in Japan! Man, it's so unfair...
yeah, I wish I had my own plabguh! Aw man, Arlo’s so lucky.
I'm going to give a subtle hint to my parents:
*Puts 'Plabghuh' on wishlist 1,000 times*
Another note on the roll move: it is not locked to downhill. By wildly shaking the controller, you gain a massive speed bonus that even lets you roll up hills. I haven't replicated it without using motion controls though.
I didn’t know the full extent of the motion controls until this video
Mr.Mumbles I've never had to use the homing, up, or down throw
TimmyQ If you don't use the homing, you're doing it wrong.
Christopher Kensei I don't use homing. The game states at the beginning to use homing if you don't have good aim lol
SuperLuigi22 It's also good for people who are lazy like myself.
You can do the circle cap throw by spinning Mario first by spinning the control stick and then pressing y or x to throw Cappy in a circle
Spin the stick and hit Y
Deldarel
I beat the whole game in hand held
Deldarel
I beat the whole game in hand held
Deldarel to spin you jut rotate the joystick 360 degrees and press h and he should do it.
I thought I was the only one to have a problem with the mandatory motion controls.
This game brings back my childhood memories with Super Mario 64. Really good review Arlo as always. I can't wait until I get my hands on the Switch and this game.
This is an amazing day to be alive
also can't afford a switch. i am kinda sad. feels like everyone else gets to play odyssey and breath of the wild. the only time i played was on my friends for 15 minutes and it was great. but i might not experience it very soon :'(
edit: thanks for the support guys will try to get either a wii u or a switch and wii u is also pretty good at my standards too alot of great games enjoyed it when i played, so i might save up gonna ask for giftcards from family which ones should i ask for? the price for a switch as of 11/1/17 is $350, so maybe not that but please send your suggestions i would like some input. input for 2 things please switch or wii u and what kind of giftcard? thanks again for your positive comments and your support
FancyCookie456 Save up your Christmas money and shovel as many driveways as you can. Good luck I hope you can get one soon!
Hey, don't feel so bad. I don't have the Switch either, and will be saving up for Christmas. Good luck on getting your Switch soon!
FancyCookie456 I'm sure many people are in the same boat as you, I know I am. I'm hoping to get one for Christmas or the $200 I need to get one. If not, I will finally be able to get a job in December. Im gonna have to wait a couple more months but I'll hang in there. Good luck to you getting a Switch soon and hang in there!
hello fellow cookie >:D but i understand your struggle ;( i hope your able to get one soon!
FancyCookie456 whether you play now, or in a year, or three years, the gameplay will be the same. Wait and save your money. I’ll get one in a few years when they cost pennies on the dollar.
Oh Arlo your videos are always a delight!
The wait is over
I know you are new to "lets plays" but I think you did very well :)
Can't wait to play this game!
You can spin Cappy without motion control, all you have do is make Mario spin then throw Cappy
Definitely not Pennywise yeah I did but why does that matter
8:20
Learning the "really long long jump" makes exploring the kingdoms so much fun. (Long jump, throw cap, lunge to your cap, bounce off, throw again, lunge again)
I dont have a switch so i have to wait for my paycheck on the 15th to play this. Pray for me
That move you pulled was awesome that made mario go so far! I feel like we need a little video in the bottom right showing us what your hands are doing then
Here we go, off the rails
Don't you know it's time to raise our sails?
It's freedom like you never knew
Don't need bags, or a pass
Say the word, I'll be there in a flash
You could say my hat is off to you
Oh, we can zoom all the way to the moon
From this great wide wacky world
Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!
It's time to jump up in the air (Jump up in the air)
Jump up, don't be scared (Jump up, don't be scared)
Jump up and your cares will soar away (oohoohooh)
And if the dark clouds start to swirl (Dark clouds start to swirl)
Don't fear, don't shed a tear, 'cause
I'll be your 1UP Girl
So let's all jump up super high (Jump up super high)
High up in the sky (High up in the sky)
There's no power-up like dancing
You know that you're my superstar(You're my superstar)
No one else can take me this far
I'm flipping the switch
Get ready for this
Oh, let's do the odyssey!
Odyssey, ya see! (x7)
Odyssey, odyssey!
Spin the wheel, take a chance
Every journey starts a new romance
A new world's calling out to you
Take a turn, off the path
Find a new addition to the cast
You know that any captain needs a crew
Take it in stride as you move, side to side
They're just different points of view
Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!
Come on and jump up in the air (Jump up in the air)
Jump without a care (Jump without a care)
Jump up 'cause you know that I'll be there
And if you find you're short on joy (Find you're short on joy)
Don't fret, just don't forget that
You're still our 1UP Boy
So go on, straighten up your cap(Straighten up your cap)
Let your toes begin to tap (Toes begin to tap)
This rhythm is a power 'shroom
Don't forget you're the superstar (You're the superstar)
No one else can make it this far
Put a comb through that 'stache
Now you've got panache
Oh, let's do the odyssey!
ᕼEᖇO Oᖴ ᗯIᑎᗪᔕ :ᗪ dont you know its time to raise our sails
It's freedom like yo never knew~
AndrewC 78 thanks i forgot that part.
Gimme the lyrics and i will add them in order
Nintendo obviously knows it's time to raise their sales!
III NNNEEEEEDDDD MMMOOONNNEEEEYYYY
So glad Nintendo’s seeing and noticing your channel, Arlo! If they sent you a free copy of Odyssey, they might’ve seen the other vids you made. And maybe they might make dlc for Mariokart 8 Deluxe, But IDK. Like you said, Nintendo has a way of just doing the opposite of what you expect so I wouldn’t know. But whatever. Anyway, I hope you’re having a good day, Arlo.
Says tremendous amount of distance
Boi that’s nothing I can go WAYYYYY farther
That aerial bit with Cappy you can actually do twice in a row. Throw, leap onto Cappy, jump off him, throw AGAIN, then jump dive onto Cappy to finish, giving you one heck of a distance to jump.
really last comment this time i am a die hard zelda fan, but i still want odyssey before breath of the wild
I’ve played tons of games. This is my favorite video game of all time.
A copy from Nintendo 😳💪🏽
I don't like the idea of jerking around the console in hand held mode. That said, I haven't seen the need to throw the cap up or down at all. Wish we could do the homing throw by hitting the cap throw twice
The game having no Hub World was a lot bigger of an issue in my eyes
It just feels like super Mario galaxy not like 64, and sunshine ☀️
Madara God Of Thickness HOW, pray tell, is it a bad thing for Super Mario Odyssey to resemble Super Mario Galaxy!?
LightningStarSC I’m not saying it’s a bad gam I LOVE THE GAME SO FAR but since Nintendo was saying it was a sand box like sunshine and 64 I was so excited and had my HOPE UP SO HIGH
Not saying galaxy is bad btw
Madara God Of Thickness this is just a first impression, but i feel like it's a good blend of the two styles because the game does lead you towards specific moons which can make it seem linear, but you can stray off that path and get other moons. (I also like how it doesnt kick you out of the level every time you get a moon)
Love this game so much. The first game I played was Mario 64 on the DS, and I loved it so much :) Also, the post game is absolutely HUGE. Awesome vid as always Arlo :)
Yeah, but solid snake.
Spoilers BTW
Thank you for not spoiling. Found your videos like a month or so ago and love them! That said I already bought my copy of odyssey. I just don’t have my switch yet since I am paying for it on layaway. Should have it a few weeks though ^.^
Why does EVERYONE complain about the motion controls. They're fine.
Alternate Buttons AND they're optional, its ridiculous
SourSpecialist If you buy a separate controller... They’re charging you for that “option”.
Alternate Buttons also, what if someone just doesn’t like motion control in general? Even if they are “fine” motion controls, many people just don’t like motion control.
Trevin Taylor you can turn it off in the menu or use the grip.
I tried turning it off. It doesn't actually change anything.
This was the absolute first thing I noticed, I'm happy that you realised it right away, maybe Nintendo will fix it eventually if enough people complain about it. There is definitely enough unused buttons for it.
Yeah but solid snake
Tip for throwing cappy in specific directions: you move the whole joycon straight up or down or to the side, don't change the rotation of the controller, just do a pure translation. Knowing this, it becomes easier to throw up or down. This also works for that extra shake after you have thrown him.
Dennis Fluttershy There will always be complaints in every game
You keep saying it's "scary", a bit overkill my boy, It ain't that serious.
Arlo, I can honestly tell you.. The motion controls are a non-issue.
I played most of the game without using them, save the side-flick for the spin throw. And the homing throw after I ran through the story the first time.
That's really all I 'needed' to use to get through the game.
I would've also told my first impressions, but the day I got my switch it got stolen. GG to those with more forgiving living situations.
ZetaBionic how the hell do you get your switch stolen in one day, sounds like your fault
sort of was, not really tho. long story short my friends parents where jealous that he got me an expensive gift and not them so they stole it and sold it... least to say it was not a fun time.
yea. and i sadly can't do anything about it unless i want to damage the friendship between me and my friend. the parents are megalomaniacs that's for sure.
THANK YOU!!!
Finally SOMEONE who appreciates Sunshine's controls
Second
Ranga Fever nope your 6th
Spoil sports
Ranga Fever 176th
Cheers for not spoiling me arlo, at least there's some decent people in the switch community c: keep up the good content my dude 👍🏻
am i early??
A true Mario master does not need motion controls. Except in Galaxy.
spoiler:
Cappy Dies at the End, just like Luma
2583060 wtf
Wait Luma dies? Should probably play galaxy
ᕼEᖇO Oᖴ ᗯIᑎᗪᔕ :ᗪ Why did you click read more -.-
spoiler:
He’s lying
spoiler:
FLUDD dies at the end
I like how his cap is slightly loose in his head, in a Donald Duck kind of way. Very cartoony, and adds character.
Sunshine absolutely does not have the best Mario controls.
wisdumcube have you played sunshine? Controlling Mario is incredibly easy, in 64 Mario seems so slippery
I 100% Sunshine in 2002.
This video is amazing doesn't have spoilers but it explains basically everything I love it make more thank you for not spoiling me
I got to try Super Mario Odyssey for the first time this week. I walked into a local retailer and to my delight/surprise I found a playable switch demo (weird because at one point all the playable demos were being removed in favour of basic video screens)
The demo world was the dessert/ice stage and the first thing that impressed me was just how detailed the effects were, I knew about him running through fog and collect fog on him, but it surprised me when I ground pounded and he came back up covered in red sand, it took me back to the awesome feeling of playing the first 3D game and seeing a character leaving wet footprints.
I've been playing it and I can confirm: It was worth the 11 month wait.
God damn it Arlo, I'm getting vertigo watching the camera zoom all around lolol
Hey Arlo, just felt like giving you a heads up regarding the motion controls here:
You can go just as fast with the rolling by holding down the Y button for a while and just quickly letting go before you press it down again and do so in a rythm of sorts. Think of it like holding the button to charge the roll each time.
You can do a long throw by performing a ground pound and then throwing.
I won't defend the homing mechanic or upward throw being waggle only
but I have practically forgotten they exists for 10 hours.
This should make handheld mode a lot more bearable.
This is the most special game I have played since Skyrim
Literally fell in LOVE with this game, didn’t think it was possible
The music on the first real level (Cascade Kingdom) was so adventurous and epic, combined with the ungodly amount of hype releasing literally made me cry.
This is one of my favorite channels.
When Arlo talks while he plays, I can't help but thinking how talented he is to talk that well without moving his lips 😛
