Port Allen is a city located in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. The city sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River, directly across from Baton Rouge.
Port Allen's history began in the 18th century when French colonists established a plantation there. The area was originally called "Plaquemine Bend" after the plaquemine, a type of persimmon tree, that grew abundantly in the area. In 1802, the land was purchased by Gabriel Allain, a free black man, who established a ferry service across the Mississippi River. The ferry service helped to connect Port Allen to the growing city of Baton Rouge and played a vital role in the development of the area.
In 1838, the town was officially incorporated as Port Allen, named after Gabriel Allain. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century, thanks in part to its strategic location on the Mississippi River. Port Allen became an important shipping center for cotton and other goods.
The 20th century saw continued growth for Port Allen. The discovery of oil in the area in the 1920s led to an economic boom. The city also became a center for manufacturing and industry.
Port Allen has a population of around 4,900 according to the 2020 census. The racial makeup of the city is 62.9% Black or African American, 32.2% White, 0.7% Native American, 1.3% Asian, and 2.9% from other races.
Crime rates in Port Allen are higher than the national average. However, the city has been working in recent years to reduce crime rates. The Port Allen Police Department has implemented a number of community policing initiatives, and the city has also seen an increase in investment in its neighborhoods.
Despite the challenges it faces, Port Allen is a city with a rich history and a strong sense of community. The city is home to a number of cultural attractions, including the West Baton Rouge Museum and the LSU Rural Life Museum. Port Allen is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The city is located on the Mississippi River, and there are a number of parks and recreation areas where residents can enjoy hiking, biking, and fishing.
