An ending fitting for the start
You twist and tore our love apart
Your light fingers threw the dark
That shattered the lamp and into darkness cast us
No, you've got it the wrong way round
You shut me up, and blamed it on the brown
Cornered the boy kicked out at the world
The world kicked back a lot fuckin' harder now
If you want to try
If you want to try
There's no worse you could do
Uh oh oh
I know you lie
I know you lie
I'm still in love with you
Uh oh oh
Can't take me anywhere (I'll take you anywhere)
Can't take me anywhere, (Wouldn't take you anywhere)
I'll take you anywhere you want to go
Oh, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me now
Have we enough to keep enough to keep it together?
Or do we just keep on pretending
And hope our luck is never ending now
You tried to pull the wool I wasn't feeling too clever
And you take all that they're lending
Until you need amending now
If you want to try
If you want to try
There's no worse you could do
Uh oh oh
I know you lie
All you do is make me cry
All these words they ain't true
I can't take me anywhere, I can take you anywhere
You can't take me anywhere, I will take you anywhere
I'll take you anywhere you want to go
Oh, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No, you can't stand me, no you can't stand me
No oh oh
You can't stand me now
Oh oh oh

Early year 2000’s, what a time to be alive!
I was young then and the best I can say is it wasn't as crap as now - but that's not difficult
Life has been saying that for longer. xx
This is the best song of The Libertines.
facts
They were in exponential growth from song to song. What this band could have been if they didnt split , my god .
It's unbelievable how good they were
Like the stone roses.maybe only supposed to be around for a short while.but their star shine bright.and both groups hugely influential.
Saw them yesterday, and it was still awsome ❤
@@lilym2244 I'm seeing them in November. Never been this bloody excited in my life haha
This song deserves more than 10 million views and 44K likes!! Absolutely legendary....❤

"you twist and tore our love apart". sums up pete and carl's relationship perfectly. My favorite band of the era!
Pete Doherty is so incredible and so under-rated. The immense talent of the Libertines is under-rated in general. I love this band so much.
Alex Datura I've only just started to get in to these, but couldn't agree more
He should've been the voice for my generation but he was shat on because of what he did in his spare time
Spare... He didn't have any spare time. To busy gettin deaf hookin' head to dance to the devil. Voices of generations are not supposed to sink said group!!
Such a pity that he's a fucking junky
I don't think he was ever underrated. He was highly regarded at a time when great musicians were coming out of every orifice.
I was 15 when this first came out, and during the awesomest period of my life I played it with my horrible teenage band. Thanks Libertines.
My band was The Smiths
I know the smiths
Watched and listened many times my freind
“You shut me up and blamed it on the brown “. Brown meaning Heroin. Genius Lyrics
Carl's guitar riff making is genius.
bang Bang was a great number.
is that his guitar riff that starts around 0:36? love it
@@samsicles_jr pete part
@@samsicles_jr i have that part on repeat
Man Carls guitar parts with Pete’s lyrical poetry these two should’ve been as big as the strokes it’s a shame it went up in shambles so quickly
Brilliant song. Coming up with the idea of singing it together and it being so personal was legendary and brave.
Fleetwood Mac did it first, cracking song all the same!
@@timothygraham4304 trash theory said that, too
This is one masterpiece of british music. I miss when The Indie bands was so cool And only prettend to be good guys. Junkie British bands will be always The best bands
A lot of the worlds best music and writings were written on smack or the comedown - From hendrix to chilli peppers, Amy Winehouse to The doors.
@@tomxixtus I'm pretty sure they had to learn how to play the instruments, and know song structure. They didn't just get high and then just know how to do it.
@@timothygraham4304 Well, thanks for being a downer on my music career.... That was going to be my pathway to fame and riches.
@tomxixtus literally
I think of this often now
The last daft thing me and my mate Chris did was carikioki this tune, we where drunk and stumbled through the music, got it wrong everywhere, giggled and gurguled until the tune stopped and the pub shook with the silence of there claps...we didn't give 2 fucks and knew we where rock gods.
R.I.P Christopher Stanley you where a clown amongst all the lesser clowns.
That's fucking beautiful, man.
I too like to "carikoki"

Sorry to hear your mate died, great tune, sure it brings you good memories :)

I can't even explain to you guys the memories that this song brings me back each time I listen to it.. I love you Pete!!

Julián Alvarez same here :')
Julián Alvarez NO! I love pete
Pure nostalgia
The soundtracks of our lives.....I know its a cliche....but it's true.
Saw them this year. This track is, for me, just them! Incredible band.
Dare I say...The Strokes influence is there, but The Libertines make it their own. Barat and Doherty chemistry... divine.
hate to be that guy but libertines 97 strokes 98 m8 they rip the clash anyways but crack made it pop, snap

One of the best songs of all time, the intro is so perfect, the lyrics are great that outro just makes you want to crank it up even more

Bilk are class too

this bands will forever be so cool
FlappableBean shut the hell up let me live
FlappableBean coolness is not measured by popularity. im sorry you feel that way.
@FlappableBean i understand all this but it doesnt matter when you discover them like i did, totally on your own, not part of a scene, years after their releases came out, and you stiill feel a part of something. Music means different things to different people, the lack of major trendy acclaim (even though they are loved) doesnt even matter. I love their music
A message to future generations, don't let this song die
its timeless so were 👌 👌
I ws surprised at the mere 10m views
A message to Luke: You are gay
This song will never die.
!
The best song of the 00s.
The Libertines. Champions league indie rock n roll.
this song is such a childhood memory. listening to it in the car as a child with my mom. i grew up to love them so much. pete + carl forever!!
This is the type of song that I really like to listen while drinking a nice cup of tea. It just so damn good.
Quality, quality music. This is one of my favourite tracks of all time, fits into my Top 20 playlist.
Same
Up the bracket for me and Last post on the bugle
my favorite song by the libertines and one of my favorites songs ever! i just love this band! i barely can wait for the new album!!
uk indie at its finest
yeah man
This is just pure rock and roll! If anything it is more punk based than indie.
David Strut I all ways felt that they were indie rock with a punk influence tbh :) and I am a fan of both music types, so when I found these guys I was like jack pot :P hahaha
*worst
rob smith Fuck off and listen to some shitty dupstep.
keep coming back, this song hits the perfect spot
actually one of the best songs ever imo doherty is such a good lyricist
This song keeps me sane, it always has me singing along in agreement with the lyrics; as apposed to "emotionally cutting myself" with other kinds of music....
I got my dad an ipod shuffle for fathers day years ago. He uploaded the songs and this is one of them. I visited him in thailand recently and he still has the same songs from when he got it over 10yeats ago. I had this song on bluetooth speaking at phuket beach
I saw them playing this live last week absolute nostalgia!
This is the kind of band that will get a cult following in 30 years and kids will say they were born in the wrong generation
you're not wrong, mclovin
I take it you've never been to 1 of their concerts then? Most insane thing I've ever experienced 🤩👌
It's been almost 20 years since the early '00s indie/garage rock got popular. A revival is right around the corner, so I think you're right. there will be a new generation of young'uns getting into guitar rock and discovering the Libertines for the first time.
Never got to see them live together as they werent on my radar back then. But I saw Pete live with only him and an acoustic guitar and it was absolutely incredible. Met him briefly before the show started at a bar, he was hammered but still played and sang perfectly.

takes me back to my younger days listening to the clash, pure class this!
Only been listening to the libertines for a short while now but they are spot on from what iv heard I bet they are fantastic live
Típico tema perfecto de Pop-rock inglés. Dura 3:27 minutos exactamente lo que tiene que durar. Muy bien extructurada ni le sobra ni le falta nada. Bravo Pete! 👏👏👏👏
Gary's the Backbone of these.. Always been amazing.👏. Accompanies his 'band mates' so damn well the LEGENDS.
The Libertines do have an emotional effect, I'm glad your feeling so free to express and egress.
I will always love them , they have nerve stopped fighting for there music to be heard, ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️more more keep on the path❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks ❤️
Such a great song, everything about it especially the way it shows what was really considered the end of the Libs
he can be forgiven for almost anything the man is a poet.
Oh my, that look Peter gives to Carl at the end !! F*cking love it !
One.the best songs from the libertines
Ahh, Brings back memories of Living in London. Really miss that place!
Few bands in the world who had their guitar chemistry, add in the fluet solo this is one of the best indie songs ever
they're the 1st band I looked at and told myself. '' I can do that". thx you guys , all the best.
The 00' - the best time for true indie music!
Timeless. What a belter!
I bloody love The Libertines!
I remember that time when I went to Düsseldorf mainly because of their concert, it was in 2014 for their reunion tour. I admit that at the beginning I was a little bit worried about Pete behavior, as it was not a great year with Babyshambles, but than I had to change my mind as soon as the band showed up on the stage. They had been so fucking good and, damn it, how much I enjoyed that night! This song is one of those which I can keep listening over and over again and never get tired of.
The harmonica part at the end is absolutely epic !
The second song I heard from them, instantly fell in love.
What was the first song
yeah me too
one of the coolest band ever!!!
I cant stop listening this song.
I love this song !
I was there the 3 nights on the Trot, definitely in the top 5 gigs I’ve seen. I recall them debuting last post of the bugle , the riff ripped the roof off . If it wasn’t for the drugs etc - & no judgment there - the libertines would of ruled the world for another 10 years easily
Buena sonada, saludos desde Bolivia 🇧🇴 THE LIBERTINE
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
The lyrics is fking top notch. an ending fitting for a start to twist and torn our love apart your.. light fingers threw the dart and shattered the light into the darkness as it casts us..
Born in Brixton, moved to Bristol when i was 11, I used to amp to this song all the time! Brings back memories!
An incredible, INCREDIBLE band/song which will always remind me of great days/nights and a time when I was finding my place in life and the world was that little bit less shit than it is right now. YOU CAN'T STAND ME NOW!!!!!
Kevin Gerald busuttil the world has always been shit, buddy. maybe you were too young to notice. however, the beauty about life in to enjoy the few meaningful moments this shity world gives you.
so you found your place?:^)
Never never never gets old!!!
What an intro.. everyone remembers bouncing around to this!
Wot can I say..amen to these two for tgis truly amazin track...fkn luv It x
Pete Doherty and Mr barat's beautiful poetic indie rock n roll anthem about their personal and tragic breakup. Rock n roll greats . Libertine 4 life always!!
Una banda simplemente mítica que ojalá vuelvan con un álbum nuevo pero en si la banda la amo carl barat para mi siempre será el mejor obvio carl y pete juntos son una explosión atómica Los amo The Libertines
"An ending fitting for the start..."
Perfect!
What an underrated guy, Thankyou RAiderspreston for sharing such talented people xxx
Pete Doherty...
No I can't stand you now
and I can't take you anywhere
but you are a legend, this is one of many magic Libertines tunes!
if you like this you might like my brother’s music. his name is Stu Morris and 'New Yellow Moon' is a good song by him.
Total feel good song.. Love it
Fun fact: they recorded this in just 3 takes, with the end of take 2 being included at the start. they decided to keep it in as it felt appropriate to the lyrics (eg. 'an ending fitting for the start')
One of the only bands who can make me cry
I’m just glad I had the chance to see them twice.
A true shame that Pete and Carl couldn't work it out. During their too-short time together, they produced some of the greatest music in rock history. PLEASE COME BACK LIBERTINES!
It’s 2021. They have several times and they are ! 👍🤷♂️
They even released an album and its effin good album
Your wish has been fulfilled

I just listened to it now. It's a fantastic song that I keep coming back to because of Fifa.

Christ - Ive come back to visit this song after all these years. I spent time with him on the tour bus with Babyshambles scoring for him and after checking I found out Petes still on the gear and I came off it years ago and have 2 kids a house married and off to bed at 9.30. How I wish he was okay and I wish him well. At least he's still alive!
My dad too works at Nintendo
54 and still think the best record ever!!
I love the last bit, makes me wanna cry!
I like that glance from Pete to his mate Carl right at the end....I sometimes dislike my best friends too, but deep down I love them xx
i just adore this song
The guitar is making a lovely sound
Couldn't agree more but he is up front and honest and doesn't live a lie like most people so will always be a target for being brave enough to talk about problems that effect alot of people in worse off situations than his own,
Miss these sort of songs!! Classics!
this song reminds me my youth days in London when the world was a better place. Peace
ARSENAL ARSENAL
Saw Carl Barat yesterday on a dj set here on México. I had opportunity to take a picture and exchange some words with him such a badass and humble guy. Im looking forward to see the whole band together one day.

Great songwriting is great songwriting. Love this song.
I wasn't into the band at the time, was out clubbing more etc, but the most impressive thing of this song is it's written to Pete about his battles with heroin and how it tore them apart.. That alone defines the song beautiful and inspirationaly classic. 👍🏻
Masterpiece ❤
They were just magic together.
Love the guitar riff the start!
