My interpretation: This music video is about the changes that you go through as you go grow up. The clowns represent childish things like your imagination, creativity, childishness etc. The men in suits represent things you have to accept as an adult. Such as responsibility, work, seriousness etc. And as you're growing up, these things conflict with each other, and eventually there is only one left. This video is also extremely sad, one of the saddest I've seen. The clown is personified as losing his best and only friend because the friend is growing up and leaving the clown. Hence the clown is singing the lyrics "Where did you go". That's the story of the music video, not the lyrics.

“You took a left off last laugh lane” this sentence is so meaningful that it hurts. The song really makes you feel like you lost a good friendship group or something else and it’s all over now; and that you are now looking back on the good times just like nostalgia infers
I was 14 when i listen to Arctic Monkeys songs while walking to school every morning. Now, 10 years later i just come back to these songs to look back and see what i achieved throughout these years. Sometimes your plans does not go well and life has other plans for you. Its the little things that we have joy and experience life. Dont be sad about anything, dont feel bad if you try to do something and it does not happen. Life is like this. If you would ask me when i was 14 where are you seeing yourself 10 years later, my answer would be completely different from where i am. But still im happy and grateful. What matters is the journey, not the destination.
Fun fact: this is the first music video directed by Richard Ayoade, who some of you may know as Maurice Moss in the IT Crowd, Zero in the Mandalorian, Jamarcus in The Watch and Dean Leaner in Garth marenghis darkplace. Hes also directed two great films of his own; Submarine and The Double
This song was my first Arctic Monkeys song and has been my favourite song ever since. I discovered the Arctic Monkeys because of my seniors who wrote ‘Alex Turner is my boyfriend, back off bitches’ on the walls of the school bathrooms. 12 year-old curious me went home and tried to see what the huge deal was about, and the rest is history x) Thank you thirsty seniors.
Umm something similar happened to me in school. I talked to a friend about artic monkeys and she told to me to listen to 505 and after that I got a big crush on Alex turner and I always tell my friend, that she's the reason for my Alex turner obsession lmao
Fluorescent Adolescent was my first AM song too, I found it on my own, became obsessed and have loved it ever since. I’m 28 now and every time I hear it I sing out loud to it and get happy hearing it.

Visited my high school at 3am this morning and listened to this song. The spontaneous crying by the riverside behind my school really caught me by surprise. The most bittersweet moment was when I was leaving, I drove down the lane and quite literally took a left off last laugh lane. The last time I truly laughed was in that lane. Such golden days.
20 years old me in 2007: Singing this along with friends and thinking the good times and the youth we were having will last forever. 34 years old me in 2021: Watching this music video and feeling sad that all the friends I used to hang out in 2007 pretty much have gone, moved on with their lives and realized I am getting old so fast
That's it, but the idea teachs us to remain same positive and not to forget our best child and youth experiences. I'm 34 as well, and wish you best from Russia :)
Just in case you don’t know the meaning behind the lyrics... “Fluorescent Adolescent” is a ballad about getting older and finding out that life isn’t as fun anymore. It describes a woman who dreams of her youth while her current life is unsatisfying and boring, with emphasis on her sex life. Got it from genius.✌️
I was the clown who dove onto the bonnet of the car in this video. The one that looks like a scary Ronald Mcdonald. This video was fimed over 2 days and holds very fond memories for me. Rod Woodruff was the stunt coordinator Brian Nickles played the robber fighting it out with Steve Graham. I am very sad to say that both of these two great blokes are no longer with us. Brian was always hilarious and used to have me in fits of laughter. He tried to get me to go into a McDonalds with a half full whisky bottle in this outfit and start screaming that I was Johnald McDonald. Ronalds brother and Ronald had stolen my idea and had me committed to an asylum.... 😂 I think thats where I might have ended up if I did. Anyway this was aimed at the Empire flour mill S.E London. The second car that I drove in the chase was a Jaguar which was apparenly used by the Police to take the Krays to the Police station after the shooting of Jack Cornell?? The other stunt perfotmers were Terry Cade Steve Walsh Tony Van Silver The rest where background guys picked for the part for their looks.
@@MMUTG3RThank you. Very kind. I worked with Stephen Graham again about 18 months ago on Blitz where I was Stunt Coordinator. Another great job. Directed by Steve McQueen. 🙏🏻
I remember listening to this song back in 2007 and thinking about how it's going to suck to be literally me now lol ohhh lord, my glory days are gone..
he was 21 in 2007, i dont understand how you can write a song so mature and so advanced at 21. capturing the dullness of aging and reminiscing about the past when you’re still in uni.
Video perfectly suits the song, cuz the clowns won against gangsters, which means woman's left with only clowns in her life, while all the bad ass men she had are gone.
Don't get why so many fans rant about their music changing. I mean, everything changes, grow up. They can't be making the same music again and again. Loved their old albums and the new one.
This song is the anthem of my twenties. Im reaching 30 soon and it feels weird. I love this song to death. It never gets old or bad. Never getting tired of it. 2:20 and forward with that added little background guitar melody makes me feel things I can’t even describe.
I was 11 years old when this song came out, it was the summer before I started secondary school and every time I hear it I get so nostalgic. It takes me right back to those times of hanging out in the park with my mates and that feeling of total freedom
Someone listened to this song about a woman who's going through a mid life crisis and missing the impulsive freeness (and the awesome sex) of her youth and said "You know what would perfectly capture the these feelings? Clowns fighting gangsters!"
+fullmetal fanboy Well I always thought this video is about someone passing through puberty and the struggles of becoming an adult (hence flourecent adolescent), and the clowns and gangsters figting representing childhood vs adulthood

This was. one of the first songs I consciously discovered during my teenage years. I don't listen to it much anymore, but I keep coming back to it once a year, feeling it as strong as ever. It's a song that will forever be ingrained in my musical DNA. The whole album was of such importance, that I don't recognize anymore when I listen to whole albums these days. Teenage existential crises and the great music that filled it were great. Miss it. Stay Flourescent Adolescent, family.
How times flies. Me and my band mates covered this song back in 2008. Now in 2022, we're all just friends that never got the chance to see each other much due to responsibilities.
A friend once said to me "responsibility has ruined my life" hey at least we done stuff when we were young unlike today's mollycoddled snowflake woke brigade 👍 th only thing they can look back on and say is "we got them cancelled" or some other shit like that.
Damn, I miss this band soo much I really wish they stayed with the similar style, i have no idea why they wanted to change so much from their sound to pretty much everything. this album and the previous ones were fucking amazing! maybe in the future they will go back to what they got famous for. hey! i can at least hope for it. because this shit right here was catchy and also really raw. ohhhh how the music industry is missing this energy and beautiful sound.
I'm 33.. Started listening to these guys back in '07... The same year my son was born. His favorite song was always When The Sun Goes Down and he would have me play that song on repeat when he was about 6 or 7. (I always turned the volume down when he dropped the F bomb). Fast forward to 2022.. My son is almost 16 and is finally discovering their whole catalog of music. He's learning them all on guitar and it sounds so amazing. Thank you AM for bringing this proud mama moment into my life! Good music is truly hard to find now a days and I am so thankful to share all this beautiful music with my son! 😍❤💚❤💚
I've been looking for this video...for years. YEARS. Someone sent it to me so long ago (actually in 07 I think!) and all I could remember was 'clowns beating up homeless people' (they were homeless in my memory for some reason) -- try putting that into Google. Never was able to find it. And now just out of random CHANCE I find it. I only started listening to Arctic Monkeys about a year ago? Listened to almost every song but this one. Wow.
well, literally.. i found the band when they released AM. spotify offered me this song just now and i was like: yeaah this NEW music is lit so i looked it up- 13 years?? it f&cked my brain..O.O
It is genius. The clowns are the early years of someones life that come in conflict with the older years(suited men) that are more mature and unfun. In the end the immaturity wins(clowns) saying to the suited man 'how did it come to this' and shows photos where they loved each other back in time
I always thought it was about 2 brothers or friends that was close but as they grew they grew apart and both went different ways and maybe arnt really friends no more
+Just Tatyana please help me find this Music video from 2008-2011 similar to flouresent adolescnet whre a woman is followed by some cops but in a very funny way...the band i think it's british
MrMcPuffy yeah i wish they would push themselves in doing more and huge guitar riffs and solos, like a really awesome 70s album u know, we dont really see that kind of thing done by a pop band these days!
Listening to it as many times as I can before the coronavirus kill us all I didn't realize how many likes this was getting. Thanks and I hope you are all save❤️
Clowns can't get jobs because parents are either robbed, abducted, or addicted to drugs they sold leaving them penniless to hire clowns for their children's birthday.
This girl I used to love showed me this song back in 2011, it's been 7 years and we don't talk but I still think about her sometimes. I wonder if she thinks about me
Knowing Ayoade, it’s a direct reference to Fellini or Bergman or Cocteau, a deliberate reference to the absurd artifice of the experience removed from the story via the medium, or summat.

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when you used to be a rascal?
Oh, the boy's a slag, the best you ever had
The best you ever had is just a memory and those dreams
Not as daft as they seem, not as daft as they seem
My love, when you dream them up

Remember when the boys were all electric?
Now when she's told she's gonna get it

Visited my high school at 3am this morning and listened to this song. The spontaneous crying by the riverside behind my school really caught me by surprise. The most bittersweet moment was when I was leaving, I drove down the lane and quite literally took a left off last laugh lane. The last time I truly laughed was in that lane. Such golden days.

I was the clown who dove onto the bonnet of the car in this video. The one that looks like a scary Ronald Mcdonald. This video was fimed over 2 days and holds very fond memories for me.
Rod Woodruff was the stunt coordinator
Brian Nickles played the robber fighting it out with Steve Graham.
😂
I think thats where I might have ended up if I did. Anyway this was aimed at the Empire flour mill S.E London.

This girl I used to love showed me this song back in 2011, it's been 7 years and we don't talk but I still think about her sometimes. I wonder if she thinks about me
Dalton C that's sweet
RELATABLE
Same here?
She does Dalton, she does...
Ma nigga...7 years is a lot of time
not enough people are talking about the scene where he throws a dummy into the river
I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT ITS SO LIMP LMAOOO JNGRNWNFWENFN
He throw it like a spear! İ can't even throw a stick straight
reminds of a part in the Beastie Boys - Sabotage video, when he drops a dummy out a moving car
He tried to do with realman but the heavy weight made him change his mind
Knowing Ayoade, it’s a direct reference to Fellini or Bergman or Cocteau, a deliberate reference to the absurd artifice of the experience removed from the story via the medium, or summat.
Happy birthday to the King himself, Alex. Have a great 35th birthday man. We love you so much.
