  • Sorry this took so long. The surf was intermittent and so it took 3 weeks to get enough footage to finish the review. Although I still feel I'm not doing it justice so there will likely be a 2nd review/update.
    As an overview, this board, or should I say this bird is an air machine. The square tail does do something for minimizing drag on take off. I'm not an air guy but I can feel the drag of launching on all my board. This board did not have that issue so it is probably the biggest air I've gotten. I have had big fly aways before but I felt in control of this one till the end. I was just too chicken to pull it and I was actually coming off the back of the wave.
    Let me know what you think. How you feel I was surfing this compared to my review of it.

    That was a good review! Like how you describe the board (dims, shape, etc), compare the differences with other boards, and then move on to surf footage about how it surfs and what works for the board. Also, heck yeah on the airs! We'll start calling you Major Thomye after the song.

    Man, you do the best reviews. So laid back and so genuine, thanks for taking the time to do these. I have no comments on the format of the reviews, they are literally great! Only thing I'd wish for is maybe a video series where you review and compare boards aimed at certain skill levels. I understand that this would be a pretty big undertaking but it would be super cool if you did a 'beginners review' where you tried a few popular beginner boards and then like intermediate and advanced reviews too. I'm saying this as I'm like low intermediate and looking for what to get next. Keep hoping you'll do a few good reviews aimed at me and my equals :D

    I watched it myself and realized there are some key things I don't really mention:
    POSITIVES:
    1) The board surprisingly catches waves well and also paddles well. I swapped with a friend on one of those days that had the exact same liters, but was 4 inches shorter. The neckbeard2 felt like it was catching waves easier.
    2) For me at least on frontside bottom turns, my bottom turns were very consistent, smooth and drivey.
    3) Way more spray than my other boards. I had an old Stewart Fartknocker with a wide flat tail like this and that board also got a lot of spray. I think the width and sharp edge pushes water.
    4) As you saw in the small waves, the board tic/tacs really well. Easy to pump down the line.
    5) Already mentioned in the video, it is an air machine.
    Negatives:
    1) Does this weird thing where the tail slips or feels like it is slipping on a BACKSIDE bottom turn. Someone else mentioned it happens to them on the cutback which is basically an elongated backside bottom turn. it's possible that I'm teetering on the corner of that block tail and that is pushing my back fins out. Maybe I need to press harder. I'm not sure.
    2) Geared towards better steeper waves. It can grovel if you have the leg strength for it but tends to want better surf. Having said that, you can custom this and get it wider and shorter to turn it into more of a groveler.

    • @shannonyoung3465
      @shannonyoung3465 3 года назад

      That problem of the tail slipping out on your backside, might be because of being heavy forward footed.
      If you were a heavy back footed, power surfer, like Dayne, etc. that might possibly not be problematic.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      @@shannonyoung3465 yea, that is my guess too. and the steeper wave didn't help that issue. this is why I wish mine had the 5 fin option. I think it would have been less of an issue as a quad. since the rear find would have been closer to the rail. Or maybe it would not have made a difference because of the block tail. would love another go at it though. :)

      it's funny cuz it is all so relative. I can go somewhere and be in the top 10% and then go to another beach and be at the bottom 10%. All relative and humbling. :) I've even had it where I am better than a friend at one beach and he is better than me at another. I am slowly starting to figure out I am a small wave guy and find my grove on grovelers, which isn't a bad thing since I surf small waves.

    Hey mate, love your reviews. I also found I was slipping on some of my bottom turns on the Neckbeard yesterday. I’m currently riding a stock 5’7. The board goes great in a 2-3ft beachie, but I found it hard when the waves got more punchy and hollow on a back beach here in Australia.
    Fins I would recommend trying:
    1. AM 1’s (all round fin with a bit more hold)
    2. AM 2’s (carving set for al merricks)
    3. FCS 2 Reactor (more upright fin) may go real good.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      I have the reactors, i'll give them a try. I think I have the AM1's but in the old 2 tab.
      I'm on a 5'6 stock. I remember the slipping early one when I first hopped on it and then at the Surf Ranch and both times on a backside bottom turn. Aside from that, I haven't felt it happen since. I'll have to ride it more to figure it out. I'm wondering if I'm teetering on the corner and when I don't put too much power into it, it isn't splitting the water, rather just lifting and allowing my back fin to pop out. Anyways, figure I will figure it out at some point.

      do you have the thruster only version of ones that can go quad and thruster. Mine was thruster only so I used MF fins. Raked back is good but if you feel the MF's are too big, just go with any medium raked back fin. FCS calls them carver fins. I like the NVS Dan Mann. They also have some that look very similar to the CI AM's.
      Personally, I would loved to have tried it as a quad but I didn't have that option. quad made more sense to me in the steeper waves like the surf ranch but I will never know. :(

    • @ThomyeSurfs

      1 to 5 is a pretty big range. Watch my glazer videos. I found that to be a good board. At some point, I'll do a comparison video of that and the Neckbeard. For airs and bigger spray, I think the neckbeard 2 wins. For carves and a board that covers you for a broader range of waves, I think the Glazer. Having said that, there are a lot more board out there that I haven't tried this is a tough question.
      Also, the dominator 2 is good but only if you get it the right size. I have the 5'4 that comes in at 25.9 L but the board feels too small. The volume is perfect but I think the wide point back from center makes the board feel smaller to me. Some guys like that if there are really back footed and performance driven. I think I would love the Dom2 if it were bigger.
      Anyways, if I get my hands on more boards, I'll let you know what I think of them. Sorry my experience with other boards is so limited. Having to buy these things myself realistically allows me to review maybe 4 boards a year. Hoping that changes some day. :)

      I think lower mostly cuz of the landing. I think if the board is too big and because we are not experienced at it, the chance of injury is much greater with a bigger board. I remember coming close on a few on my seaside and potato boards and when I land, there is literally no give. with my smaller boards, I noticed, especially if you move your foot up towards the nose, the board will sink a bit on the landing so it cushions the impact. which is why i think all the pro's seem to shift their feet forward. Almost like a nose pic vs a reverse.
