    Your review format is superb. I feel like I've handled the camera myself. You show the menus off and the little quirks very well, and it's not tedious. The other channels lack your thoroughness and solid script.

    Your reviews are the best on youtube, keep up the good work! Might I suggest comparisons to other cameras in it's class for people that may be looking at a few different options to buy from. Perhaps a bit at the end describing your overall impressions and why you liked or disliked it. Just my lowly opinions.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  9 лет назад

      +Rustbar That's kind of you to say, I appreciate the comment. I have reviewed a few other cameras in this class, but as I don't have them side by side, I hesitate to make that kind of comparison. In my mind, the differences are either clear feature haves/have nots or aesthetics. In the end, except for a very detailed breakdown (see DXO and dpreview) they are all fairly similar. My recommendation is typically to buy the one you love, that appeals to you on a visceral level and that you'd never want to leave at home or in a hotel room.

    Great video, your format is very professional and you give a thoroughness about the camera without being laborious. It is an expensive camera but it packs a lot of features that make it acceptable for me to purchase. I've owned the previous M2 and M3 and I find this upgrade worthy. If only they could fix the 5-minute 4K video limit. When I filmed in 4K during the winter, I had no issues presumably because the camera stayed cold. I'd also like them to be able to have a longer focal range...but a lot of times I tend to shoot at the wide end so I suppose there is only so much you can do when you have a camera this small. The image quality is pretty good- I especially like that it shoots in RAW. Its my secondary camera when I am out and doing some street photography.

    I'm 2 years old but awesome review/walk thru..I intend to use it as a B or C video camera for some slow motion at 120fps in HD. Also for easier timelapse sequences- I bought teh timelapse app and it works nicely. I will try it with a Gimbal this summer at a wedding to get slowmo footage. Lovely shots!

    Please help. What is the best setting for low light setting inside the venues? because i am getting lot of video noise.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      For video, I shoot with shutter of 1/30 (unless there's a lot of movement) and a nearly wide open aperture. The AutoISO or set to an appropriate level. You may be able to minimize noise, or increase clarity by using one of the picture profile that uses cine gamma - although you may need to experiment to determine which is best for the specific scene. Turning down saturation and detail in the picture profile will also help.

    I have recently purchased this camera from Sony I am becoming increasingly frustrated that I cannot install the time lapse app when I connect to the Sony website every time I try to download a error message comes up selling the unable to switch the camera to download mode can you advise or offer a solution

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 лет назад

      There are two ways to install apps - using a computer with the camera connected via USB, or directly on the camera by connecting the camera to your wifi. I find the latter to be a little more tedious (entering passwords, etc) but more reliable. I recommend you try that. What is your computer/operating system? Are you using the Sony USB cable (I know they seem the same, but for me only the Sony cable works)? Which USB mode is the camera in?

    • @guz5135
      @guz5135 8 лет назад +1

      I'm using a genuine Sony cable which was supplied with the Mark IV and my laptop is a Mac I have a Sony account and I have no problems downloading apps to my a 6000 it's just the 100 Mark 4 I'm having problems with Sony is telling me there is an update for my Mark 4 that I need to do but it won't let me do either

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 лет назад

      Have you tried connecting the camera to wifi to download apps? I'm also a Mac owner and can attest that it's not a reliable connection. I've often had to take my A6000 to a PC/Windows to install an upgrade. Good Luck.

    I'm trying to make a short film with my rx100m4, but everytime I shoot a scene, it always seems to lag with certain movement. It's hard to explain. Like it jutters, even when the camera is still, if I move fast, while recording, it will lag by a split second and is not totally smooth.
    Which options would you recommend to film a small conversation video? Which would be the smoothest options?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 года назад

      Are you shooting in 4K or HD? What frame rate are you using? What is your shutter speed? Are you using a tripod?
      And please do appreciate that this is an amateur, not a professional video device. It will have limitations and shortcomings. It's best for fairly short, static shots. Let the scene move instead of the camera. Don't zoom while shooting.

    • @Deanhughes5707
      @Deanhughes5707 4 года назад

      @@MaartenHeilbron I shoot scenes with both 4k and HD, both have similar problems, I put it to 24f and still doesn't run smoothly. I actually have no idea how to use the shutter speed setting as I never shoot in slow mo. I sometimes use a tripod, I usually test it out by placing the camera on a high shelf and examine my movements. It never seems to be perfect. I am not sure if it's to do with PAL or something.
      I only use this camera to shoot close ups on faces, it only seems to run smoothly if the person is walking or moving slowly.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 года назад +1

      @@Deanhughes5707 Why 24fps? More frames (I recommend 30) will capture more images so make motion look smoother. You'd best figure out how to use the shutter speed setting, as that's the other part of the problem - it's not just related to slow motion. A high shutter speed will make motion look jumpy, a slow one will make it blurry. Use 1/60 for all videos except slow motion.

    I am excepting my first child soon, and I am looking for a good pocket camera with more advanced controls. The Sony rx 100 series seems like a good fit, but my pocket book would much prefer a mark II over the mark IV. Do you think that I am setting myself up to have to buy another camera in two to three years if I go the non 4k route? If so can you think of any other good options? Thanks for you help! Your videos are entertaining, informative, and well produced.

      +Kevin Adams First, thanks for the kind words - I always appreciate them. It's very hard to predict the future, but the 4K features in the M4 are somewhat limited, so I wouldn't hesitate too long over the M2. I know I"m a video producer, but really, you'll mostly take stills. Our kids love the albums of photos, and we rarely watch any videos of their childhood. In two years, the world will look very different - that's a good timeframe to review your decision. Your other options - Nikon 1 series or Canon G7X.

    • @KevinAdams06
      @KevinAdams06 9 лет назад +1

      +Maarten Heilbron Thanks for your help Maarten. I think your right, I probably won't even have a 4K monitor for another 5 years. Sometimes I just need to hear other people tell me what I already know before I believe it.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  9 лет назад

      +Kevin Adams That's a good observation - I frequently tell viewers who can't decide between cameras to let their heart be their guide. There's always one you love, but your heart needs to convince your head.

    What is the best Sony Cyber- shot RX 100 model for taking pictures of birds, butterflies and flowers?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      As I assume you're referring to macro photographs (for butterflies and flowers anyway), I don't think that any of them are particularly well-suited. An interchangeable lens camera with a macro lens would be your best choice.
      For birds, as you'll want to zoom in the VI or VII with the longer lens would be best.

    I love this camera! So much to learn..
    Can anyone shed some light (no pun intended) on why in situations like indoors, the camera selects a ridiculously low shutter speed like 1/30 instead of raising the ISO? It seems I’m not alone about this problem. It’s impossible to get sharp photos handheld..
    Great video! 👍

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. I wish I knew why, but you can over-ride this by using shutter priority or manual with AutoISO. However, there is a unique Sony feature that allows you to prioritize speed over quality in the menu (ISO Auto Min. SS). Set it to Fast or Faster and you'll find that the shutter speed is increased.

      Thank you for replying to me, appreciated! 👍
      I will definitely have a look at that setting, as some of the indoor situations are often just everyday photos, where quality isn’t as important. But I will also have to play around a little with the shutter priority mode so more! Thanks again! 🙂

    Greetings, Maarten! A superb video, sir! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as this Canon G1X Mark III, or Sony RX100 III. My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". Plus, I'd like to keep total budget to under $1000. And, FYI, I'm a 100% stills guy, so don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? And would I see a major difference in detail retention when making, say, a 20x30" print from the 1" sensor RX100 III v. the APS-C sensor of the Canon G1X Mark III? Thank you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Right. Well, the issue that you'll confront is the one-inch sensor. And while it is possible to create larger prints from those images ( I have) they are not quite as sharp as those from a larger sensor. I'd consider a camera with an APS-C sensor, like the X-E3 to be a better choice, unless you are prepared to lower your standards a bit.

    Hello Sir, I am an amateur photograph and I am planning to buy a large sensor high end compact camera. I have gone through all your videos and everything is better when I see each of the reviews. Finally I made a conclusion on three camera's - Fujifilm X70, Sony RX100 M4 and Panasonic Lumix LX100. But can't make a decision because each one is better than the other. I am seeking your great advice on this because I don't know much about these and reviews make me love with one or another.
    My priority will be great quality like DSLR images, good for portrait and street photography. Which one you will suggest for me, my personal favorite will be Fujifilm X70 and i thought even if it lacks a viewfinder i can buy one from market. Then it's the sony with all great features but everyone says that LX100 is the best amongst the three. Do the LX100 still in the market? Please Please help me on this.
    Finally I have to say that your reviews are tremendous and extraordinarily elaborated with points covered in every corner. I have not enjoyed any reviews more than like this. And your channel is my first subscription in You Tube. These words are from my heart and not a price for the questions I have asked.
    Thank You Sir.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 лет назад

      +Sreejith Sreekumar Thank you for the kind words. I think the X-70 is a good choice, it has the largest sensor of these three so can provide the best quality images ( it's not the best choice for video). That said, there is lots to like about the other two also. In general terms, I recommend that once you've narrowed the field to a few choices, unless one has a feature you can't live without - let your wallet (price), your hand (size) and heart be your guide.

    I would say 4k just a demo :) - great video Maarten - I gave up - 4k only for winter climate :) - the LX100 really still the smallest real 4K :) although not not many 4k video features but at least it does not overheat -
    4k still remains a challenge - Sony had to increase size of A7r body to accommodate 4k - and Panasonic not out with a GM6 with 4k :) I think it will be awhile till we see a GM6 with 4K due to small size
    The RX100 m4 is impressive - I agree that the location of the Write light is terrible - although 4k not ready or cooked fully - I also find that the EVF is a bit hard to use - maybe a better eyecup would help but then would have to be put on and removed -
    I tend to use my Canon G7X a bit more due to Focal Range being longer and Touch LCD./Touch Shutter- I hope you get a look at the Canon G5X - no 4k though - I am glad Canon is coming out with a competitor to the RX100 lineup to help reduce prices
    - The RX100m3/4 offer lots of features but lack Touch LCD and shorter focal range - Canon has the longer focal range but lack in features - Can we marry them into one more complete camera :)
    I find that the IQ no better on the RX100m4 vs m3 but of course faster burst and I understand sensor is better to keep up with 4k etc - but still just overheats to fast - for me many times at 3 min - and always had to wait awhile after a single 3-5min clip

    I have the RX100M2, I think that one and the M4 are the best of the RX series.
    I might get an M4, but I like the M2 because it has the multi shoe mount and I can mount different flashes and an OLED viewfinder, as well as the stereo microphone and mini shotgun microphone. Which makes it versatile over the M3 and M4. Which you are limited to the on-board flash built in mic and no multi shoe.
    While the enhancements are nice on this camera, the lack of features on 4K video is disappointing. A 5 minute recording time? No thanks, definitely not the camera to take extensive recordings.
    As I've mentioned previously I have the AX100, and the M2 is a nice companion. Takes great quality photos, and I like the flexibility with the multi shoe using multiple accessories. At least there's a filter kit for the M2 and I can mount an MC filter and CPL filter with a vented lens hood. Sadly I don't think there's a filter kit for the M4, and the one for the M2 only works on the M1 in addition.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  9 лет назад +1

      +Marth Thanks for your comment and raising those issues. The AX100 plus the RX100M2 sounds like a nice pairing.

    • @10191927
      @10191927 9 лет назад

      +Maarten Heilbron Yeah. I love the AX100 for the video quality and it takes some nice quality photos. But the DSLR quality of the M2 is really nice, I love the bright, crisp images and it has such nice defocusing.
      I just don't think the M4 justifies a $1200 price tag when you can buy a full 4K camcorder for under that amount. And as you pointed out you can buy the other models like the M2 for substantially cheaper and a few accessories as well.

    Great review as always - Way to expensive - in warm weather my 4k video sometimes shuts down at 3 min - so to me the 4k is really a sales hype and really a false marketing
    - but yes m4 has improvements in video over the m3 - but I have not seen any still improvements - so if one is ok with HD then the 3m might be a better value - not sure trying to make this a Pro video camera is the best option for Sony :)
    I would have rather opted for a longer focal range etc - camera related - and of course Touch LCD and Touch Shutter -
    It is amazing that Sony that produces millions of smart phones with Touch LCD's and knows folks like Touch LCD and know how to use it still insist that it is worthless on a camera and therefore will not implement regardless if users keep asking for it ! amazing - I am not sure the Canon G7x/G5x are creating to much competition for the RX100m4 - but hopefully some -
    Now Panasonic is coming out with a 1 inch sensor compact - similar size with EVF etc - but instead of a faster lens they are opting with a 25-250mm F2.8-f5.9 vs 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 - so not a direct competitor and maybe it is a good option as some need more focal range - but Nikon is also entering the 1 inch market -
    So the best of the RX100m4 and Panasonic TZ100 might be the best option :) and maybe the Canon g7x/g5x as Canon has much better audio quality and is more confident in focusing - especially tracking focus -
    Canon should have been able to fit a EVF similar to what Sony is doing or Panasonic vs the big hump of the G5X -
    The Canons offer quite a bit for half of the price of the RX100m4 - I just think that for most family's and average users they offer enough for a lot less price - but certainly the Pros want all the whistles and bells :)
    Will be interesting to see if the Panasonic FZ100 will have Touch and flip LCD and 4K -
