Own it to this day as a quick and dirty b-roll pocketcam. Great little machine. Love it.
So far the best and most informative RX100M4 review that I have seen. Thank you.
You are welcome. Glad I could help.
Great video like always. Very informative, unbiased and detailed explanation of all the pros and con !!
what other camera can you record 1 or 2 minutes at least in 960FPS? unders 1500$
Hey I had a question, when you drop down to 240 or 480fps, doesn’t the camera let you drop the shutter speed then so you can follow the 180 shutter rule ?
so convienent camera baby bag in the left shoulder with a kid in the hand and a rx100 mk3 in the right perfect!!!☺
Thanks for your reviews. I bought a Canon 70D after watching your review in 2013 and I now replaced it with a RX100IV after watching this review. You are one of the inspiring reviewers.
Thanks. You happy with that much smaller camera :)
I am happy with the camera and lot lighter and smaller than the 70D
TheOutdoorFun how's the rx100 mk4?mine is coming tomorrow can't wait to it.. I also like 70d.. that's my dream dslr
Very good picture quality, easy to use, easy to carry. When it comes to auto focus, Canon 70D is far better than rx100iv
i also have the 70d.. i want to replace it for a sony rx 100 iv or v.. how's your experience with the tiny sony?
Excellent presentation on the high speed function. Thanks for the video!
How do you get those tips on the screen? I have a a6300 now and it doesnt show them....
Thank you so much. This video really helped out a lot. I just got the M4 yesterday, and I was looking for some help. You definitely helped very much
Could you make a tutorial on how to make videos in slow motion with this camera.
any idea when will sony rx100 m5 will come in 2016 with pdaf
Are you using different mic's throughout this? The audio changes rather drastically between some shots. It's rather jarring. Otherwise, great video as usual! Your production value keeps going up and up.
Also I always find it hilarious seeing these compact cameras on tripods intended for DLSR's or proper video cameras haha.
+TalesOfWar Yea - sorry about that.
Great review and thanks for showing how to control the slo-mo recording :)
Can you set the self timer in HFR mode?
Hi, I want to move from my DSLR (7D) to smaller camera because I travel quite a lot and sometimes it is hard to bring heavy dslr + lenses. My question is should I choose Sony RX100 IV or mirrorless camera? Can you recommend good mirrorless camera with price range more less like Sony RX100 IV?
So is this "the" go to compact and wifi camera?
Thanks for mentioning the 4sec limit in 960fps.
Nice review! I really like the main shot and the editing of the video. Keep up the great work! Also, the Sony RX100 IV seems like a fantastic little camera.
+Lost Age Gaming Thanks! Was a bit tricky shooting it all myself but happy with how it turned out.
Ok video but missing details on how to use the 960 fps mode
I wonder how it compares against the micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100, which does 4k video for a long time. Then there is the RX10 ii vs the Panasonic EZ100. Both 1 inch sensors. For 4k video, I'm glad I went with the Sony AX100. I love it. I like it's features better than the other cameras. But for those who want to do stills as well with a small camera, I wonder if that micro 4/3 camera from Panasonic is better. Seems similar to a GH4 except it has a fixed lens.
Fist review, where shows HFR mode in action. Now I got it. Thanks a lot! Thumb up!
Quick question, I'm mainly a vid guy - lots of access to great cams and gear but I'm looking for a best pocket cam for travel. I know the rx100 mk 4 has limitations, and is far from the perfect solution, but would you say this beats out the lx100 and like for the best travel cam all around? And yes if I bought it I'd probably shoot a lot with slog 2 and 120fps, I might use the HFR up to 240, but that'd probably be about it for quality sake. I'll be taking lots more pictures over video so my main need is as a solid P&S, the video is bonus (but an important one).
Can you manual focus when buffering?
I own it.. I love it... despite alllll the negatives which you've already mentioned. The raw IQ is amazing. jpgs in low light is amazing.. 4K is amazing.. The 1080 is also amazing. I owned an LX100 before as well. Sony is far more superior. The down side with LX100 was, when you buy one you can't select between PAL/NTSC. I didn't know that when I bought so I bought a PAL version so I was stuck with just 24,25 and 50 fps which sucked. Since we live in an online world which PAL & NTSC is irrelevant so I sold it. Using both one I'd say LX100 is no match for an RX100 M4 but...... I must say as a first time Sony user, the menu system in sony cameras are appalling. But you get around in week than it's ok. Sony's are the least user friendly camera I've ever used and I've used them all :) (I aslo have a GH4 and Panasonic cameras are very user friendly)
Thank you for the great review. Just got one myself and prefrence to Lumix LX100. Tough decision...can't have the cake and eat it....a real Hobson's choice for me.
Great video i am so on the fence with buying this.. Sony has gotten so much of my money this year. Sony A7ii and Sony A7Rii but i do want another pocketable camera... should i jump or not jump and buy this.. help..
+T Rice if you don`t desperately need the HFR recording, better wait until christmas price war ^_^ ...
+Gear Wheel Too late just order the 100 iv. Christmas so far away. By that time I might well wait till the
X100 mark v. Lol. Should get mine today 😀
you`re sony sick :D ..
what did u pay?
i payed the 948, standard price but the bundle on beach camera, cam with a 64 sd card and extra battery and lot accesories.
oh .. a costalotta :D ... mine will arrive next week. 875€...
yo cant wait for the Sony a7iii giveavay .
Great video! It was really helpful
hey, can I export true 480fps file to pc ? (the frame rate of the original video is not converted to 60fps or others)
I really appreciate this video, thank you soo much!
Good info, thanks.
Thank you so much :) best review for rx100 iv. So i have become your subscriber.
I got the rx100v5 and use it for family photos at birthdays and such, but in auto they usually are blurry. Anyone got suggestions on how to get better photos?
possibly the only really honest review of this problem camera, thanks i will not be buying one now
To small range with that lens. Hoping mark 5 brings a longer lens a hotshoe and a mic input.
Whats your thoughts between the Canon 70D and T6S/760D ?
+Angelo Bacena You can see my thoughts right here photorec.tv/2015/04/t6s-vs-t6i-vs-70d/
Thanks
Hello Toby, thorough review. What's your recommendation for close up detail pictures. I am a Makeup artist and I take lots of images of clients trying to keep the quality as good as possible. so far I am considering the A5100 after watching your review. what do you suggest. love from Scotland.
+Francine Ray The a5100 is really nice, pair it with this lens for some awesome detail shots. www.amzn.com/B0054I54JU/?tag=photorecomm0a-20
Thank you so much for your help. I've taken the plunge today and bought the A5100. I'll be picking up the macro lens too. I can't wait to get it and start documenting my work. Thank you.
Woah, Toby, now that you mentioned that aperture priority setting to fix blur. Can I do something similar on Canon 700D? I usually shoot on AV and most of the times I don't want shutter to drop below 1/100 on my 30mm fast prime but to raise ISO instead. Is there any way to do it? Maybe with Magic Lantern?
+tenow Yes you can i think or at least you can on the 70d. IF you go to your settings and change your minimum shutter speed you want and then put your ISO on auto then you should be ok.
+tenow Yes - what Matt said below BUT it still isn't as smart as the Sony setting. This is an area that Canon is still a bit behind in.
Is there a way to remote trigger the slowmo record?
+jwhite34 Does not seem like it. Just tried and when you enter HFR mode on dial connection tells you unavailable - switch to another mode.
Great video man, thanks for sharing!!.
Nice review
Great review! I'm thinking of getting the Sony RX100 IV as my first camera, but I'm still unsure whether to get this or a DSLR..
+Ramadan Besim How much control do you want as a photographer? RX100 not well suited to full manual control but small enough to go everywhere with you. DSLR gives you complete and easy manual control but big and heavy BUT gives you room to grow with additional lenses etc.
I like to travel and thought of getting this. Not sure really, I've just gotten into photography now. I usually take videos and pictures on my iPhone 5s. The Canon 70D is currently cheaper than the Sony RX100 IV but I really like having 4K video. Maybe I'll just get the Sony RX100 IV and save up for the Sony A7S
+Ramadan Besim Don't forget it has a faster lens 1.8 and 2.8. if you want to take 24-70mm 1.8 2.8 lens for Apsc you have spend more for it. I have rx100 iii great travel camera.
+MOHD Rizz Yes faster lens but smaller sensor - they kind of cancel each other out in some respects.
PhotoRec Toby Best compact pocket camera.
good review
What SD card do I need that I can record HFR videos? I already tried two and both won't work according to a error message of the camera. The latest one I bought is the SanDisk Exteme PRO SDHC UHS-II Class 3. It writes 250MB/s - I think that should be more than enough? Why can't I still not use it with the camera?
You need SDXC, not HC. Make sure it has at least 64GB capacity.
Thanks for clearing this up for me!
Great video
The 4 second limit for HFR is really disappointing. It also does not allow you to use the self timer function when in HFR mode, rendering this mode more of a gimmick.
I almost bought an RX100 III as a companion to my DSLR, but then I found the Fuji X100 second hand for cheaper. I wanted to like the RX100 but it is hard to justify it as a second camera, I know I'm losing out on better video and a zoom but the Fuji X100 has better still quality and was a lot cheaper than the III or IV.
X100 is APS-C and jacket pocketable too. I'm really surprised at how good it is with the newest firmware, I paid $320 or so.
My fuji broke after a single drop 1 meter high. Fuji are cheaper for a reason. They dont last.
Hello, I notice the 960fps is soft compare to 240 fps? do i need to buy rx100 4 when I have already a sony a6300?
Do you want the faster fps?
PhotoRec TV yes for speed ramping. im not sure if sny a6300 120fps is enough for smooth speed ramping or i can edit on twixtor apps to add more slowmo without buying sony rx 100 4..one more thing how is the video quality (slowmo) of sony rx100 iv compre to sony a6300?
I have the rx100m3 and have just got back from the family vacation were i was able to really test out my rx100 and i found that in good/great lighting conditions it does a good job with good IQ but step out of these conditions and that's were it starts to fall down, as you start climbing up in iso IQ falls off very quickly, so my advice as someone who has used the rx100m3 a lot over the past year or so, is for a little more money you can get great deals on the rx1/rx1r which is not that much bigger or A7 with a prime and A7ii will get much better results, the only thing worth the price tag on the rx100 is its small form, which if the results aren't great in less than good/perfect conditions, then being small isn't that much of a benefit, that's just my opinion of course :)
+adrian faulkner I agree that IQ is not great at higher ISOs - it is still just a 1" sensor. Not sure the RX1 is where I would go next but it all depends on what you are looking for and how much one values portability over versatility or room to grow.
+PhotoRec Toby I was thinking of portability with the rx1r, but that being said the rx1r will have better IQ than A7ii unless you're going to spend an incredible amount on a lens for A7ii,the only thing lacking for me in the rx1r would be the AF
What's the resolution of 960fps slomo video? 4k? FHD?
+Raspberry 1080p
+PhotoRec Toby that must be upscaled ?

Nice Toby!
+sski66 Thanks!
Quality time priority buffers 2 sec
Shutter time priority buffers 4 sec
Thanks
Some time ago it was said P&S cameras were gone. Has it happened?Definitely NOT. btw What location was the review produced on ?:)
+marioplus321 Sales of P&S cameras are dead - there are a few that still sell well, like the RX100 series but all together they sell nothing like a few years ago. Review was filmed off a back road in southern Vermont.
about the tripod/battery door problem : the RX100IV is known for eating batteries like pacman. so, if you don`t take some quick shots from your pocket and try to work more "professional", it will take longer. the RX100IV manual say, it is able to work with attached external power source (power bank or power cable). so it`s not really a "drawback" for me. its just one device more on rig or tripod.
price is much more now. sony does the same they did with A7 series. but they all have one or two really interesting features. and if you really need this, price doesn`t matter. it IS a very interesting film camera in "16mm film format". the only other one in this field AFAIK, is the blackmagic pocket cinema cam, which is a pro filmcam with raw recording, but difficult to handle and in need of equipment for good working with it.
the only real drawback is the processing time after HFR recording. that means, you`ll maybe miss a very interesting moment.
Awesome little camera, but I don't think it's worth the price tag. Not to mention that 960 FPS is basically just for fun, because the quality sucks. Great video as always.
+Mister R That's about my feelings too.
PhotoRec Toby For basically that price (a bit more, I think) I bought the A6000 with 16-50mm, Sigma 30 2.8 and Sony 50mm 1.8. Cheers.
+Mister R you guys compare the wrong cameras. the RX100IV is the poor mans FS700 ;). so, YES - its worth the price.
this camera is for filmers. it has slog2, 4K, HFR (even if 960 is crappy) and a great image stabilisation (in HD). that makes it a perfect camera for filmers. photographers better take the RX100/II/III ...
Gear Wheel Ok, ok, but I still think it's too pricey. I'd rather buy a 1080p capable DSLR/Mirrorless anyway.
yes - ofcourse you`ve got more creative possibilities with them. i already have an A7 and ordered that RX100IV this week.
thousands taken with this camera video channel
Its hard very hard
4min in 4K is 90-100% of the battery, that is another downside
