My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on RUclips.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!
So come check it out! If you’re a fan of DigitalRev, Fro Knows Photo (Jared Polin), Matt Grainger (That Nikon Guy) or Tony Northrup - you’ll love The Art of Photography. I make video’s giving you a deeper dive into photography techniques, composition and history to compliment the other channels you love to watch.
I always enjoy the variety of your content, Ted.
Whether it be biographies of photographers, Adobe software, photo theory, or even a review of a new camera, I'm always watching.
Keep it up and keep evolving!
***** Thanks Matt
As a new viewer I found your "first look" more informative than a number of other "reviews". Thanks.
Your knowledge set is very fluent. I learn a lot every time I watch your videos. Keep up the great work.
Sounds great... I look forward to the full review!
Wow fantastic video! Gave me information I had no clue about yet still kept it simple enough for a novice like me to understand. Good job! Really wish I had the money for this camera as it seems like an overall great camera for its size. Portability is really important to a lot of people so I think Sony is definitely on to something with this lineup.
Great video! as all of your videos, quality stuff! love the variety!!
Thanks Ted. Can't wait for the full review!
I love the appearance and layout of your channel. Thank you a whole lot for the inspirational effort.
A very informative well constructed first look review.. Subscribed! I am a beginner photographer and I am struggling to decide between the MK III and the MK IV, waiting for the full review!
Thanks for the useful initial review...Sony is really great!
YES! This camera seems so cool, like the next LX100, a small FZ1000.
nice review - look forward to hear if there is much diff in low light - from 3 to 4
Really enjoyed your review, very enthusiastic.
I am looking for a camera for an upcoming holiday in 3-4 weeks time, funny enough, Los Angeles, just like you.
I think I have settled on this, 99 percent certain.
One beautiful camera, might need to get this as a secondary to my Canon 5D Mark III.
Nice and very detail review!
Nice review! I just got the Miii this week and think it will be perfect for me. It is nice to see the upgrades on the Miv, but it was not worth the extra $$ for me at this time. I hope Sony does a firmware upgrade with the last 2 items you mentioned!!! Those 2 changes would make me love my Miii even more!
The Mk III is an excellent camera. Enjoy! I really love mine still.
Great now I have a decision between the GR D II and this?! I'd love to see a comparison between the two compact giants.
Great vid good stuff!!!
Great first look, I just got mine.
I had no idea that the 'stacked sensor' design also allowed better low light performance!
Subscribed ;)
Can you spend some time on the HFR part, I'm still trying to tame it.
Thanks!
I can't wait for the full review!
Thanks for all the info, Ted! Most appreciated!
Very good review man.
great review, very informative and straight to the point. thanks!
Out of curiosity, when you mentioned the monitor brightness issue you encountered.
Is this still an option for the RX100 MII? I'm considering on getting that one and I totally didn't take that into account and was wondering if there was an option to enable/disable or at least lower the brightness of the monitor.
I think the "Deactivate Monitor" thing is also available on Mark 3.. Same as that. My gripe is that I think it should completely power off the monitor so that it can save battery a bit more..
did you ever get to review the rx100 mark iv? sample mark iv images looked fantastic on dpreview. since you're an actual owner of the mark iii, did you find a big difference in low light (noise), image performance?
Hey,I'm not sure how to contact you so I'm just writing here. I wear glasses and I've been troubled by trying to find out what dslr has a viewfinder that has good eye relief! Even if I take off my glasses it's impossible to see edge to edge in my D5100 viewfinder. I understand full frame cameras have larger brighter viewfinders, but eye relief information is very hard to find! I just want to be able to see the entire frame!! Could you help me out?
Ted, not related to the RX100M4, but I'm interested to know what your thoughts and opinions are on the Ricoh GR?
I'm glad to see a fast turnaround on the RX100 IV first look. Like you mentioned, I really want to see Sony release a firmware update to the RX100 iii for the evf and the monitor. I'm waiting for the rx100 iii to come down in price a bit before I can even think about picking one up; sadly, the rx100 iv doesn't have much better features to put me over to get the mk iv versus the mk iii, but I would be very interesting in getting a mk iii for the right price.
Nice. Sony has been killing. I'd get one of these if I had the budget. And I'm so damn curious about the a6000 successor.
I have to say Ted, you've been awfully techy lately. Jonesing for some videos about the craft. Cheers!
What's your opinion on close up ability. I need a camera to take pictures of food while im traveling. Thanks !
Hey Ted, did you ever post a video with your hands on experience with this camera after some testing? Please share the link if so, I can't find it on your channel.
Nice1! Looks good! Guess I have to look at this Mark iV rather than Mark iii. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and quality video. Much appreciated!
Bless!!!
I'd like to get a pocket point and shoot camera and I think I'm leaning towards to the RX100(I'd love to get the Nikon DL 24-85 but apparently they'll never be made...) Which mark RX100 should I get? Obvisouly I'm trying to save as much as possible on cost so is it worth saving the £150 or so in-between each mark or even say £250 between the latest and older marks like the V and II?
Thanks
thanks for this review, the lcd off bought me!
now its like a classic camera of old... :-)
Hi there,
What do you think about the sony a6000?
And what cameras would you recommend for fashion bloggers in terms of convinience but good quality pics?
Can't decide between this and Panasonic LX100. What do you suggest?
Use cases are mostly daily casual photography, travel, and I really like LX100s low light photo capabilities (judging from reviews).
Great review! I'm thinking of buying this as my first camera. What bugs is that you can only record 4K for 5 minutes.. would have been great if it was like 15 minutes
Great review, helps a lot. Thanks
Thanks Ted... any suggestions on an affordable point and shoot for just everyday use.. right now i have a Nikon D5100 with a bunch of lenses but looking for something convenient for outdoor events/parties.. maybe RUclips vlogging thats pocket carry... thanks for the videos and glad things are working out for you doing this full time.. wishing you continued success
See if you can find a Canon S110. Excellent for the money.
Hey Ted. Good review. I have the miii. A request for your full review is a comparison of the iii and iv at high ISO. It might make the difference to me shelling out for the upgrade.
I love this compact - use it for the street - but it falls apart fairly quickly after 1600, and I reckon my mobile phone starts to compete with it in IQ at that point. Looking forward to what you find.
Very professional first look review !! :)
I just recently picked up a RX100IV used and it came with 4 batteries. I went on amazon and found replacement batteries by off brand (3 for 20 bucks) and I also found the Sony BX-1 batteries for 34 bucks EACH. Are the Sony battteries at the higher price going to perform better? I have heard this camera uses batteries fairly quickly, so I want maximum performance from each battery. Thx...
I want to go into photography i wish i had one this camera or atleast the mark 3 :(
hey esau,
I already have an M3, should I get the M4?
I really like slow-mo, and Im not an editing type of guy. Also, what camera was used to film THIS VIDEO, and what microphone?
Excellent Review!
Should I wait for the mark v?
Which camera you have used for this video? lense? and Mic? Thanks.
Do these have any inputs? headphones or external mic?
will 2016 sony RX100 mark 5 will have PDAF dual pixel , just like its IMX 260 sensor in galaxy s7 , because pdaf is very useful for vids
Hi, do you think that worth to upgrade camera from IV to V?
I'm 3 years late, but after watching this video I think it's clear in 2018 that the decision is more between the Mark 2 (100mm focal length) or Mark 4. The EVF option is still not added to the Mark 3, and that kind of behavior not being customizable would've driven me nuts. Also consider your criticisms regarding the Panasonic AF in video made (GX850, GX85) has given me pause on considering their gear for good until the latest G9/GH5 level AF-updates trickle down into the consumer gear.
Also with the RX100 Mark 6 announcement, everything Mark 5 and down should see a reduction, so it's a great buying opportunity :p
The eye sensor of the A6000 is borderline buggy. I can't take waist level shots if the camera is closer than 6 inches to me. Monitor only, EVF only or automatically switch between the two but with this sensitivity issue. I want a button to press to switch.
How many minutes can this camera record in 1080p before it heats up and stops recording??? Good review by the way.
amiri679 no overheating in 1080 so far. There is a 29.9 minute recording limit due to EU taxes though. That's standard on all cameras that aren't proper video cameras.
ohh ok thanks . I think 29.9 minute is more than my expectation , coz I have sony nex 5 and heats up every 10 - 14 minutes and stops recording .
excellent video btw :)
Hello I want to know sony rx100 cmos sensor better than the Sony rx100 4 stacked sensor..
Ted! Huge fan of what you do! Thank you for your knowledge! It's a shot in the dark, but would you consider a comparison between the RX100 IV and the Lumix LX100? I would love to hear your thoughts on what you would choose. Thanks! Keep up the awesome work!
how do you control the camera in Manual mode? I don't see any gears to turn yet it has an M on the modes wheel, so... just wondering, might seem like a good compact to invest in
Google made me do it Select M on the mode dial. The dial on the back controls both aperture and shutter speed. You press the bottom of the back dial to toggle between them. You can also set custom buttons to do this. You have the C button or you can reassign any other button including the 4 sides that you can push on the back dial. Hope that helps!
The Art of Photography doesn't sound too hard, thanks :)
hi. I have rx100iii cam. Cannot properly use makro,,I used it for taking photo of mobilephone main boards components and damage, also for mobile phone parts but cannot do good makro . also we tried to take movie in low light room but i cannot set it at all..we tried everything and video is too dark.. i used to have canon g16 that was amazing ,,even in dark I could take movie without problem...if there is no solution i must get rid of this item and get canon back..:/ any advice?
Can you Vlog with it?
Best compact camera!
Nearly believed some of the hype generated by rx owners myself, til I finally got round to comparing enough pics on flickr, vs pics from supposedly "inferior" small cameras.
An extensive review, but I am surprised that, aside from a couple of nighttime movie images, in a 14 minutes review, there was not even one image of the kind of shots this great camera produces, for example, super slow mo, or the great colors that can be achieved with this new Sony camera.
Quality content.
A smashing compact! The rest of the current lineup is equally impressive and should scare CaNikon...
and if the inside of the dust popodet.....?
Hopefully the 5 min 4k limit could be taken off with a future firmware update.
I was looking forward to upgrading my MkII to MkIV (having skipped the MkIII because it did not have 4K) essentially for the 4K capability, because let's face it, that's where we are all heading, so there was no point in buying the MkIII. However, after watching this video and finding out there is a 5 min max recording time for 4K, I was so disappointed. What the hell am I suppose to do with 5 min recording? Might as well not have that at all. It's like saying "hey this camera has a 1000 megapixel capability but you can only take one photo". Come on Sony, don't play us like that.
However, having said all that, I much appreciate Sony's effort to improve on the small quirks and annoying things that came with the MkIII, like the EVF closing = turning off camera and the ability to turn off the display. They are certainly listening to the feedback from the end users and acting on it.
2015 will not be the year for my upgrade and I'll be looking forward to Sony RX100 MkV in 2016, and hopefully by that time Sony will have that 4K video sorted out.
great video! thanks
I have a very nice Sony DVD player. want to buy their vacuum cleaner and refrigerator. not sure about camera
the best camera for budjet 1000 euro?
Compare it to iii please
Canon #1 for any kind of camera .
I really wish there was a 1440p option :(
Great video as usual. I'm a big fan but why can't you use an alternative to the word cool. Seams like the English language offers many alternatives. I know it's not just you as every other reviewer goes cool cool cool. Come on guy, show them all you had a better education than that. Apart from that, keep on rocking.
is the Mark 3 still worth purchasing in 2016?
Yes, it is less expensive with similar features. But you may want to consider waiting for the Mark V to be released if you are more interested in the Mark IV.
Should be a better camera.
Thank you sir... nice review..... 100 likes from me....
3 months later and still no video update of this cam...
what needs updating?
LX100 from panasonic has a 15 minutes 4k recording limit. I though it's as worse as it could get, and then this...
RX100 or the Ricoh GR? That is the question.
Atothe B love my GR but the AF isn't great. Great to have on you all the time though as image quality is amazing
I'm wanting something smaller for street photography but I'm not too sure about a 28mm lens. I know there's the option to crop.
I wouldn't use the crop feature as it's just the same as doing it after on the camera or on a PC. 28mm is a bit wider than most mobile phones and about the same as most dalr cameras kit lens at widest. I shoot mostly portraits on my dslr and use the GR for out and about family stuff

maybe sony should talk to panasonic ot figure out how to get past 5 minutes in 4k.
porque não tem a tradução para português,
I just received my RX100 IV and am returning it. I tested this indoors at 75 degrees ambient temps and when shooting in 4K video the camera overheats in sometimes less than 5 min and shuts it'self down. And you cant just set record again because it will overheat again almost immediately. So this camera is useless trying to shoot in 4K. So you can't shoot consecutive 5 min 4K clips. Sony should not have released this camera to shoot in 4K. For me it's a useless 4K camera and that's what I was planning on using it for. Beware. Sony blew it with this camera.
Great upgrade but 1000 is so much.
I love you. 😐
Wheres the review? :S
Panasonic Lx-100
Nice Info but too much talking.
Stop showing your face so much. Show the product more.
sorry i've watch so many unboxing or first look videos on youtube, and this is by far the most uninteresting video ever..... I can't keep watching this video without spacing out, wouldn't continue to watch the video around 3:56 when the black caption thing was on. I was asleep. It might have something to do with the way you talk, it has no up and down, its just like how those boring college profs talks in class. Sorry if i hurt you feeling but hey, truth aren't always pretty.
Well you sound like a lot of fun.
