I may get this one, mainly for its compact design and the 50Mbps video format which means better quality 1080p. The 4K is more of a novelty as the bitrates, framerates, and dynamic range keep improving. People buying 4K TV's right now are crazy. The picture quality is still improving every year in leaps!
Great video! Clear, concise, features explained and shown at the same time, dialogue on the bottom of the screen to explain what is being talked about. Thanks!
I shoot weddings with the canon vixia mini x as a B camera. It's very small, actually smaller then the rx100iv and its wide angle with a nice 2.8 lens, and it records great audio and has a price tag of half the Sony rx100iv. Plus the vixia mini x has manual audio controls and an external audio mic Jack. Battery life is incredible and no overheating issues. It has a selfie screen and I put it on a selfie stick to get reality type selfie video at weddings. I think it's something you should consider...
Thanks for the review! I own an A6000, a camera that I take with me running carried with a strap. While the A6000 is small enough to carry around jogging, I still want a smaller camera that I can just put in my pocket but has better image quality than a smartphone. The only reason that keeps me from getting the RX100M4 is the steep price.
I love the feature that you can flip the screen all the way up to take selfies, but for $900+ dollars, it's a little too expensive for a compact size camera.
Solid review. Love the three-shot of the two different cameras. I own the RX100 Mark IV, and it's an amazing little camera. I'll say though that the UI isn't great - there are a LOT of menu functions, and Sony hasn't done a great job organizing them. I've had a lot of instances where I try to use a function and I get an obtuse message saying I can't do something - but it doesn't tell me what mode I should be in for it to happen. And the high frame-rate option is cool, but it's challenging to use because by the time you start the recording, the automatic buffer fills up so fast the moment is over. I need to spend more time with it. The microUSB charging is a BIG deal given that this camera has battery life more like a smartphone than a camera; I can connect it to my USB battery pack and charge it anywhere. That's AMAZING. But also a must, because the battery life is on the terrible side. All in all though, I love the camera!
+Jason Dunn Thanks for the feedback, Jason! Yeah the HFR can be a bit confusing at first, but you can change the setting for initiating the recording which may help you.
i think, this usb charging idea is a big deal for sony. its easier to destroy your USB port by having an accident at home than damaging it by changing the battery. got the same problem after 2 years with my gopro. and it seems to make more sense to buy the new model, than repairing the old one. win for gopro -.- ..
Great review! Your video made me buy this camera. The overheating problem became an issue not just in 4K mode but also in 1080p 120fps. But I still love this camera. I just need to learn how to work around this issue.
Considering saving the $150 and going with the mark III. Also torn because I could spend this much on a new DSLR which "looks more professional" but in reality having something pocketable on me 24/7 is way more important as a photographer.
big let down was the sound, and thats 50% of your video. looks like one to skip until the overheating problem is sorted iPhone does much the same as this, for simple vlogging it's a tad expensive unless you're hyper popular here
Just picked one up, was deciding between the RX100 IV or the LX100 and opted for the RX100 IV. The main attractions for me is its trouser pocket-able, has a pretty awesome slow mo features and the tilting screen. I have a Nikon D750 and Panasonic GX8 but the RX100 IV seems to be the perfect every day carry about camera. It really was a tough choice though between this camera and the LX100 especially as I love the M43 system.
+Andy | MyTechMethods hopefully Sony could pull a trick to fix that 4K overheating issue and can possibly reach 4K recording for at least more than 10 minutes or 15 minutes and possibly an increase in megapixels.
Great review man. Thx for the comparison with the iPhone and slr. Wanted something I can carry around everywhere. I have an slr and an iPhone and was wondering if this will be much better than my ipohne and you have shown that it obviously is. Thanks!
apart from the image stablisation what other features make this better than a canon? From other reviews it appears the canon is better for size, low light, realistic tone, mp4 format, wider viewing angle.
Nice review! If anyone is on the fence about buying, this camera is available for rental at borrowlenses. We've just rented one for possible use in a shoot where the photographer wants to include slow motion video. So I have until Tuesday to figure out whether we're using this camera or the iPhone 6s (or both) for video capture. No pressure! So about that battery life in high speed capture, just how bad is it? Full to drained in an hour? 30 minutes? 5 minutes?
Nice review. I agree with most what u had mentioned. I also think this is slightly expensive. Lastly, did you purchase this for your channel or did u receive a review unit?
Instapez Thanks. I purchased this with my own money. It was a big hit to the bank account. I was going to test it out and return it if I felt it wasn't worth it. But I'm keeping it.
very good review RX100 seems to be the best option for me as a new youtuber. one problem for me is that the new version Mark V will be released so soon. during this waiting period i still have to shoot my video with iPhone5.
Did you know you can circumvent the 5 minute and 29 minute recording time limit by simply connecting an external video recorder like the Atmos Assassin 4K video recorder via the RX 100 MK IV's micro-HDMI output. Now you have an unlimited 4K video recorder with microphone inputs !
+Andy | MyTechMethods I'm really surprised that no one in review of this camera has mentioned attaching an external 4K or HD recorder to the camera's live video signal HDMI output ? Everyone is complaining about the 5 minute limit and the overheating issue, but then no one seems to remember this camera has a special live 4K HDMI *clean* video signal output setting. No Mic input ? So ? Attach an external recorder and you'll get two of them !
nice video man. just subbed. I was wondering what other cameras compare to this in quality not size. So what other pocket cameras are the same or better? thanks!
and also what in your opinion is the best combo for still shorts and video? as I'm going away to new York and need a decent quality for low light too thanks!
I'm deciding between the canon d70 and this camera. For one, i like that the rx100 is much lighter on the arms while vlogging. I also like that it has the ability to capture high quality images and videos. What i don't like is the battery life(it's probably the only thing deterring me right now other than no hot shoe for mic)..may have to spend a few extra bucks to get 2 more batteries. What do you think? One spare is enough for about 6-7 hours of filming? main purpose would be for travel vlogging and product photos. Great review!
+Tony Do why would you wanna have 4k for youtube.....for anything really. Hollywoods most high end movies don't do 4k. Biggest and most expensive digital cameras ( alexa) don't have 4k. lol don't worry this is only good for the hfr
Thanks for the review. I pretty much film most of my outdoor vids with the Sony exclusively now. To anyone who isn't sure about dropping the cash, feel free to just check out some of the quality of the Sony RX100 IV footage on my channel; you won't be disappointed :-)
I checked out your channel to see your use of this camera...your 1 minute films in NYC are great! You seem to use a combo of your 5d, this Sony, and iPhone 6...how much of the Sony do you end up using in those films and which editing software (and LUT plug-ins if any) do you use in your editing?
Hey, thank you! 90% of the time I use the Sony - it's just easy to carry around. :) I use a combo of Premiere Pro, Final Cut, and After Effects mostly. Cheers!
in the past weeks, i noticed: selling of this camera isnt fast now. ppl. realised, that they can get same for less $. 4K limit at minutes is a deal breaker for many. also the crappy resolution all above 240p. if you like 4K, better buy another one. if you like 240p, you can also use iphone or gopro. if you like a small camera, but with bigger sensor and more lens flexibility, check a sony alpha6000 .... they all are much cheaper. so the sony rx100IV is a swiss army knife. it does it all, but cooking a whole meal with it is a pain... its the same concept like the casio EX-ZR-something. i love the idea behind the camera, but not at this price tag.
+Georgia Benjamin The 100 (Pal) or 120 fps (NTSC) is in the normal video settings. You have to do the slow-mo through a video editor as the camera only does in camera slow-mo with the HFR Settings.
Nice review, thanks. I probably will get the camera (found an open box one for a great price), but my only hesitation is the limited zoom. Can anyone comment on if the 4K video resolution gets around that limitation due to the ability to crop in tighter in post? Or when you crop do you find pixelation and lack of crispness as you do on a GoPro. Thanks!
Hi Andy, what can you say about the Sony Rx100 MK IV's big brother, the Rx 10 MK II? Is it better to buy the MK II because of the longer 4K recording capacity?
whimsicalpatriot The RX10 II looks like a great camera. The lens on it is 24-200mm so that's an advantage as well. It doesn't go down to f/1.8 like the RX100 IV but I'd say it's a good buy. However I've never used one myself.
Nice video, very informative. I'm a newbie & a photography enthusiast. I have been using a Canon EOS 60D borrowed from a friend to learn the basics. I'm moving to USA on Aug 26th & want to get myself a DSLR within a budget (as I will be a student pursuing masters). Could you suggest me a DSLR camera? Thank you.
Narender Reddy I don't do photography but I do videography and I published a post about the best camera for RUclips if you want to check it out: channelempire.com/best-camera-for-youtube/
+soglf If you can't afford it, then price is of course an issue, there are other options. Overheating occurs outside mainly according to other reviews, but if you're in a controlled environment then it won't be an issue. Battery life, again not an issue if you have multiple batteries. I bought the RX100IV with 2 spare batteries and I have an external charger on top of it so it won't be an issue.
Justin Nguyen I don't quit agree first when I said price as an issue I meant comparing with other flagship rival cameras in the market . "controlled environment" you just want to take your camera and go filming right away outside or inside wherever it is not very handy to be coinsurance about the room temperature weather etc. of course you can have multiple batteries but you have to cut filming and start a new film every time you change batteries and with all hard work ! removing and installing again maybe cut the most important view holding more and more things etc. what you said could be an alternative solutions but not what you are really looking for nor what you expect from camera with that price on it however these are just a kind of temporary solutions not fixing the real problems in the first place
Hey Andy. Its 2017 and Im looking to buy this Sony. Im a youtuber and portrait photographer so Im looking for best option. Is this Sony camera still highly recommended
Andy Slye So I bought it and got it today. Beautiful images and video but Im disappointed. I cant transfer my images to my Android because its not supported in my country. Major disappointment! i feel cheated by Sony
Not a chance! Just buy the new iPhone if you want smooth, stabilized 4k on the cheap. If 1080p is fine, the Lumix zs40 has best in class sound quality, fair stabilization, incredible zoom, in nearly exactly the same body, for a fraction of the price.
I think it looks like a very nice camera. I haven't tried it out yet, but I own a Panasonic GH4 and the G7 is sometimes referred to as the GH4's little brother, and I love my GH4.
Get a second hand mark 4. The only reason not to would be if you're concerned about the slight extra cost. The Mk4 has better video and also better image quality when compared to the Mk3 (when shooting in RAW, no idea about jpg). Also, contrary to what other people are saying, I own the Mk4 and have never had any overheating issues, even after shooting consecutive 4k videos. No idea why.
is the audio better than a iPhone in a noisy environment - this is the thing that stops me buying it - can you get ok audio - do you use the GH4 or this for vlogging.
I was going to get this camera for golf but it says it only records 4 seconds of slow motion ether before or after you touch the record button but that's not enough time to swing & then get to the record button to turn it off or turn it on & swing. You would have to swing & get to the rec button & turn it off before the ball hit the ground or before it got to the top of its arc in the air. Is it really only 4 seconds?
+HangtimeGolf If you use end trigger you can wait for the club to hit the ball then press record and it'll record everything before the club hits the ball for 4-5 seconds depending on your settings.
It's not but the flash on it isn't bad. What I do like about it is that after you pop it out it's flexible so you can point it up and bounce the flash off the ceiling or away from your subject. Really cool camera.
Hi Andy, like your videos they are very helpful. I do have a question, I have a go pro 3. When I go to upload it I get a error video was not publish in a mp4 format. I can not figure it out, driving me nuts. Thanks for any help. Bigbuddy.
Should be a great camera for the party crowd that loves to take selfies. Much better low light performance than a phone cam with similar pocket ability. A shame you can't make calls with it.
The high quality SloMo is only 2 secs, and you never really catch what you want to catch at the beginning -.- overheats alot, and the battery is too frkn small...I would not buy it again.
Thank you Andy for an excellent review, and we agree to all you say, If any of your viewers would like to take their RX100 Mark 4 for a dive, and capture some really neat SloMo images as well as 4K and excellent stills, please visit www.sonydive.com
Good video, but I think "perfect for you tubers" is a tad bit pretentious to say, everything else I liked. The fact it can't use an external mic would actually cause me to say "Avoid this at all costs if you're thinking about being a pro you tuber" It costs way to much to not have the ability to do so. And in the future if you wanted to do interviews among other things this camera would yield a very poor experience. Most youtubers use external mics, so not being able to use one seems inadequate. 1:Overheats 2: 5 min 4k, 29minute 1080p limit 3:No external mic support. This is possibly the worst camera for a youtuber I've ever seen. And buying one for youtubing would be an utterly foolish investment. but the rest I liked, thanks for sharing.
My favorite pocket camera! Buy on Amazon: geni.us/RX100IV

what I like the most about this camera is the fact that it made RX100MIII drop in price enough for me to be able to finally upgrade my RX100....YAY!
Sarlota Nice!

WreckTheReckless Yes it's a tough decision. They both have their pros and cons.
Thanks for the review Andy. Have you tested the Canon G7x M2? If yes, would you recommend this over it?
I haven't tested that yet. I heard it's pretty good though.

RX100 seems to be the best option for me as a new youtuber.
one problem for me is that the new version Mark V will be released so soon. during this waiting period i still have to shoot my video with iPhone5.
Do you know when V will be coming out?
according to this website, the releasing date is postponed

I'm deciding between the canon d70 and this camera.

What do you think? One spare is enough for about 6-7 hours of filming? main purpose would be for travel vlogging and product photos.
Great review!
Recording in 4K will drain the battery faster than other HD modes so if you plan to record in 4K you'll definitely need a spare battery or two.
what about the third version? does it have all the features except 4k?
Great review! I would definitely upgrade from my Canon G7X for RUclips logging if this could record 4K for longer than 5 minutes lol.
***** The Canon G7X is a great vlogging camera too (as I've heard) so you should be good.
+Tony Do Try the samsung nx500. it does 4k video up to 15 min

With one charge? Not sure what you mean...
awesome info on this camera, you helped me a great deal. Is there a remote control for this camera?

Hey Andy, nice review, one question, how much FPS can you record in 4K and in 1080p?
EduarFilms Thanks! I believe for 1080p and 4K the fps options are 24, 30, and 60 (I'll double check and get back to you if that's wrong)
thanks man, because there is seriously no point on using slow mo if the footage is less than 1080p nowadays
in the past weeks, i noticed: selling of this camera isnt fast now. ppl. realised, that they can get same for less $. 4K limit at minutes is a deal breaker for many. also the crappy resolution all above 240p.

I am confused, which digital camera with samll size to buy which have excellent pic&video?
I would say most people can't afford that do you have any thoughts on the Sony DSHX90V/B ????
Tony H I've never used that model before, but the form factor looks very similar to the RX100. Seems to have good reviews too.
1-price
2-overheating

Andy Slye So I bought it and got it today. Beautiful images and video but Im disappointed. I cant transfer my images to my Android because its not supported in my country. Major disappointment! i feel cheated by Sony
Not a chance! Just buy the new iPhone if you want smooth, stabilized 4k on the cheap. If 1080p is fine, the Lumix zs40 has best in class sound quality, fair stabilization, incredible zoom, in nearly exactly the same body, for a fraction of the price.
How is the battery life when just taking pictures?
I haven't calculated it but it seems to be good.
Andy what do you think of the Panasonic G7 4k?
I think it looks like a very nice camera. I haven't tried it out yet, but I own a Panasonic GH4 and the G7 is sometimes referred to as the GH4's little brother, and I love my GH4.
When I send footage to my Mac the quality looks like 720
Well done video.
Thanks Richard
need a comment, mark 3 OR mark 4
still mark 3 handles the job?
only 4K video is the difference?
thank u
Get a second hand mark 4. The only reason not to would be if you're concerned about the slight extra cost. The Mk4 has better video and also better image quality when compared to the Mk3 (when shooting in RAW, no idea about jpg). Also, contrary to what other people are saying, I own the Mk4 and have never had any overheating issues, even after shooting consecutive 4k videos. No idea why.
is it hard to take pictures with everything in focus because the lowest aperture is 2.8?
Nope haven't had that problem
is the audio better than a iPhone in a noisy environment - this is the thing that stops me buying it - can you get ok audio - do you use the GH4 or this for vlogging.
I use this for vlogging. Here's a vlog filmed entirely with the Sony RX100IV: ruclips.net/video/Gnp_nTIbjWo/видео.html
Nice Andy
Спасибо! Очень помог с выбором камеры!
you're testing a 4k video when the uploaded video is only 1080p HD? How are we supposed to tell the difference...
The 4K footage was downscaled and exported as 1080p as explained in the video text. See why here: ruclips.net/video/9oEWvBsN63U/видео.html
is there any color correction or something else this video?
I was going to get this camera for golf but it says it only records 4 seconds of slow motion ether before or after you touch the record button but that's not enough time to swing & then get to the record button to turn it off or turn it on & swing. You would have to swing & get to the rec button & turn it off before the ball hit the ground or before it got to the top of its arc in the air. Is it really only 4 seconds?
+HangtimeGolf If you use end trigger you can wait for the club to hit the ball then press record and it'll record everything before the club hits the ball for 4-5 seconds depending on your settings.
Ngl you have the face of Channing Tatum (big big compliment, don't worry).
Ha yeah I get that often.
Great video.
Thanks
What's its like for shooting Macro shots, that's what I'm into .
Bart Raffaele It's pretty great for really up-close shots.
@Andy is this camera compatible with an external flash?
I'm not sure. I use the built-in flash and it works just fine for my needs.
Bigbuddy.
Buddy Bouchez Sorry I don't own a GoPro but this may help you: gopro.com/support/articles/video-fails-to-import-into-gopro-studio
Thanks Andy. that help a lot, keep the videos coming I learn a lot from them.
Does it have video pause feature
Is this a good camera for beginners? :)
Aparna Iyer Yes, if you have the budget for it I think it would make a fantastic camera for beginners.
Andy | MyTechMethods Thanks! I'm looking into this or the Canon Rebel T5i (I do understand that they are quite different)
Should be a great camera for the party crowd that loves to take selfies. Much better low light performance than a phone cam with similar pocket ability. A shame you can't make calls with it.
Can you put a fisheye lens (video screw on lens) on the this camera?
I don't think so. Lens is non-removable
After searching around I found this :) Sony VFA-49R1 filter adapter
Scott Aichner nice!
Does it have an audio input for an external microphone?
No
the RX100 IV got better quality than the GH4 haha
God I want that pizza... Thanks for the vid
It was delicious lol thanks
I love my RX 100 ix
Can I still mount this to a tripod?
Yes
I'm gonna get it!"
+locksleynet enjoy!
is there video stabilization ?
+Commander Erik Yes. Look for other RUclips videos showing. It crops, but is very impressive.
+Commander Erik this wipes the floor when when it comes to stabilization. a different a league.
Is there any noticeable difference between the m3 & m4 during low light recording?
The high quality SloMo is only 2 secs, and you never really catch what you want to catch at the beginning -.- overheats alot, and the battery is too frkn small...I would not buy it again.
Sony RX100 M4 24-70...2.8 Çokkkk iyi
I love the GH4 hahaha
I think i wont get one but instead get the m3. The 4k feature is not yet good enough for me and the m3 is a lot cheaper right now.
Totally understandable.
Thank you Andy for an excellent review, and we agree to all you say,
If any of your viewers would like to take their RX100 Mark 4 for a dive, and capture some really neat SloMo images as well as 4K and excellent stills, please visit www.sonydive.com
Sony RX100 3 still the best :)
S-Log picture profile?
+Ben Gregoire Design Yes it has S-Log2
+Andy | MyTechMethods thanks. great job on the video BTW. :)
Ben Gregoire Design thanks!
1:Overheats
2: 5 min 4k, 29minute 1080p limit
3:No external mic support.
This is possibly the worst camera for a youtuber I've ever seen. And buying one for youtubing would be an utterly foolish investment.
but the rest I liked, thanks for sharing.
+vooii what would you recommend as a better alternative?
+Revolution Hive The Panasonic Lumix LX 100 is a bit bigger but it has a better sensor and you can connect a mic.
$950!!!!! Omg! With tax it'll be like $1000! I think i'll just go with GoPro Hero 4 black.
+Commander Erik I've a GoPro Hero 4 Silver and RX100 Mk3 and the video quality doesn't even compare. RX100 Mk3 (understandably) is much, much better.
+Robin Malik what about audio quality? the build-in mic, is it good?
that pizza 🍕
It was delicious
Not getting this. Simply too expensive to justify filming for my humble youtube channels. I enjoyed the video though.
Dr. Certifiable Thanks. It certainly isn't for everyone.
