I'm attempting this RIGHT now, today --with an iPhone 5S, so far it's working. Actually TextNow RUNS on the Sprint LTE network, at NO cost to you, NO WiFI needed to Call & Text!! This IS STILL a VOIP, so it's confusing, but via the Sprint LTE they are connecting you to the Sprint WiFi (I think,) & the service is paid via ADS shown in your Text or Call inbox. I believe there are UP GRADES, should you become bothered by all the ads, I think? Again, just setting this up myself.
Questions would be why need ringing alerts if only would work on wifi, well I have a phone now that data only is working ( I think is government connectivity program ) so I want to use a app instead of paying full price for what I don't need. Or just pay less for this app service which does the same thing ...
I had a problem with each, google voice - need a carrier based /non VoIP phone number to verify. So not perfect. With textnow or talkatone etc. Caller on landline or mobile is unable to leave voicemail. Anyone else have a solution for "no carrier Wifi full phone service?
Hmmmmm. Good question. What if you bought a pre paid number to open the Google voice account. It might be a 1 time fee, but then you would be all set. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like it would work.

It's not free, you still have to put credit on to make calls

You only addressed half of the problem. How do you RECEIVE calls over Wifi?

Hmmm, I'd check the settings. I've never had that problem. You do have to be sure you are connected to WiFi.

Yes. GV does require that. Once you put in a number, they will text you a verification but that will be the last time they contact you on that number.

Great question! The answer is no. Facetime is separate from phone service. It is a video service offered by Apple exclusively.
