You guys are the friggin' best. I've been working on this one since I uploaded my last video two months ago and I was worried up until four hours ago that no one would care about a video about home phones because they'd be too boring, etc. I'm breathing again. Love you guys. 😍
It's really amazing! Your quality of video on youtube is that of someone who's been doing it for years! You had me hooked on the video two months ago, and have me rocking in my chair waiting on the next one! Keep it up!
You're the best, small RUclipsr I have EVER watched. And let me tell you this. I have a lot of years ahead of me, in turn. Lots more years of RUclips. As long as your still making videos.I'll be happy, you have a good future man. Cheers!
I've had my Obi 14 months now and I love it! I prepaid Anveo $25 for 1 yr of E911 service. Each E911 call cost $5 so that gives me 5 E911 calls per year. If your setting up for a sick elderly who might exceed 5 E911 calls, you may want to put more money into the prepaid account. It doesn't roll over if not used. You have to renew the service after a year but price stayed at $25. I test mine monthly by calling 933 and so far everything has been great and no problems. This video helped give me the confidence to let go of AT&T. I set mine up along with 3 of my friends. They also love not paying for phone service. My friend's mother has a vacation home in the mountains where cell service is bad and the Obi was perfect. She was thrilled to get this setup. Thanks so much for your video. It really helped me more than I can say. May God bless you! 😇
Dude *Your Back*, finally! I really enjoyed your last video on Collage and Gaming Laptops I couldn't believe that was only your 2nd video! This channel is going places, and I'm glad to be a part of it this early on
Not his 2nd video, it's only the second video that he's put on his RUclips. He says in his older video that his college classes require him to make many videos so he's probably really experienced in making videos like this
Hello sir, I just used your advice and managed to get my ISP to reduce my monthly bill by $16 and change, as well as getting an upgrade in Ethernet speed (200 to 300), with the deal locked in for 24 months. Gratitude, sir. Now I will look into your hardware and Google Voice to replace my $20 monthly Vonage service. Excellent video.
I've got a macbook mpro and it's better than a chromebook because in my school we use alot of programming and I can't dowload certain program in a chromebook
i do my coding at home (dorm) with my old laptop. I dont need to spend 1000+ dollars to replace my already functioning laptop with a newer more slim version just so I can take it to class
yeah I just spend 1450 dollars, also I have a gaming pc in my house that costs something like 1600, but my combo is not cheap, better purchase a chromebook I rhink but already have pros and cons, it's ok.
I just reviewed your video and used the information for the second time. This time, since I was already down to just internet service, I was able to get them to offer me 500Mbs service for only $45 per month, when I had been getting 60Mbs for $55 per month. WIN!!! Thank you so much for this very informative video!
I wanted to let you know that I just had that 'chill' conversation with Frontier. Result: I just doubled my internet speed...and they're bringing me a new router! I also bought the Obihi. I brought the home # over to an existing wireless line I had. My husband thinks I'm a genius. No, DeV is!
Oh, but You are - kind of a domestic genius :D I agree with Your H-man, DeV showed You an idea (great 1 btw) but it's not like a miracle happened by itself ;)
I was paying Frontier $100 a month for 200/200. I was out shopping with my wife and there was a Comcast guy set up in the store. I talked to him a while about my service and he offered me Gig/25 for the same $100, so I told him I would think about it. When I got home I called Frontier and told them I was thinking of taking that offer. Before my coffee could go cold the retention specialist at Frontier offered me 500/500 for $60 a month with no expiry date... Win!
I'm the first person out of my friends and family to ditch the landline. There is ONE big advantage to keeping it, however. There are a lot more regulations in place to ensure robust service. If you live in a hurricane or disaster prone area you really should consider keeping your landline. Also, if you're in a big city and own/rent a house, consider going with over the air TV. You can get excellent quality local channels. Supplement that with a good streaming service About 80% of most people watch on TV is available for free over the air.
This is of course an older video but people will still be viewing it for a time and I still wanted to chime in on the topic (because land lines are not dead yet) and add a perspective that I think many miss (This is a longer post, warning): There is still one thing about land lines that as old as the tech is, is still superior to all others even today - it's stability. In many situations where VOIP and cellular services will go down (disasters, weather, etc), land lines many times will continue to work. They don't need electricity, and many times the lines are protected from the elements. There have been several instances in my life where my land line continued to work when all others died. I'll give two quick examples below... 1) Twice we've had bad ice storms in my area (suburbs of Atlanta) that caused power to go out for many days. People's VOIP phones go out immediately or within hours if they have a backup battery. Within 3 days their cellular service gets spotty or goes out completely, as the cell towers with generator backups go down, and the carriers aren't able to refuel their generators promptly. But... my land line kept working. This has happened twice in my area and both times literally nearly everyone in my neighborhood wound up at my house to use my land line - the only working phone around the immediate area except for one other. Another time a tornado took out a cell tower nearby - along again with power. Bingo - the land line kept working. Hurricane Sandy in the NYC/NJ area a few years back did the same thing - all VOIP and cellular went down but the few land lines connected to the pay phones that were left? Kept working. The Mayor at the time ordered MORE land line based phones installed after that as a result. You get the point. Land lines don't necessarily make sense for *everyone* to have anymore. But it would be foolish to completely dismiss and get rid of the technology, until such time that VOIP/Cellular systems can be made to be just as stable as they are - and so far they're not close. Until that time they're still handy, so even if you don't use one yourself, please don't support AT&T's effort to have all of them dismantled.
It depends on how the VoIP systems are set up. Sadly companies like to save money and not invest further in making it work during power outages. Also, you can call a 'VoIP' Line a Landline since the definition of a landline is a fixed-line phone that uses wires to transmit audio/data. I think the term you are looking for would be 'Traditional POTS' The Cable Companies COULD run drops with 12v to power modems and keep service online but they DONT. But yes It is not VoIP/Digital Landlines that are bad. It's the CABLE COMPANIES and PROVIDERS!!
I watched your entire presentation even though it was off the topic I'm investigating. Just because of the entertainment value, and the quality of your production. Then I read a couple dozen reviews, and I must agree with those who appreciate the audio quality. Not subscribing yet, but will be looking for other presentations that may address my interests. Good job!
I have had this set up like for 5 years, with an Obi for two lines, and it works flawlessly. Two lines for free and I also connected a fax to one of the lines. Hope it will work like that forever.
@@marchellejordan347 1. Buy OBI on Amazon for two lines. 2. Open an account on Google Voice, and transfer your number or get a new one. The new one is free, but transferring a number is, I think, $10. 3. Setup and activate OBI on their website. They also have support. 4. Add the device under Google Voice setup page. Setting this up seems a little confusing or complex, but it is not. Once you understand the idea, it will become second nature. The good part is that your Google account lets you text from your computer, and you can set it up to receive emails with the voice messages or text messages. You can also transfer calls to that number or from that number to others. You can also record calls, etc. There are many settings to use. You will have records of all your calls on GoogleVoice page. It is like an email account, but with calls. Very convenient. Connect the OBI to your Internet with Ethernet cable to you router, and then your telephones to the phone jack on the back of the device, and you should be ready to go. One this is done, you will rarely have to touch the device. The quality is excellent, and you will never have to pay for any service.
@@sarameloua6343 You can make international calls, but not free. You will have to fund your account, that is, to pay Google. I put $10 every now an then. Google has its rates. But, for long distance having WhatsApp is more convenient, because it is free.
When getting the next deal with the Retention/Loyalty rep, it's a good idea to ask for the conversation identifier (or their employee identifier), so as to better ensure that you actually get the stated deal. The group that's porting your number out (from your old provider) may not necessarily take the time to review any written notes to adjust pricing, and by that time, without any record of the original conversation, you'll have lost the leverage that you had earlier.
@@digitalgods5568 Cell phone have the same problem with 911. if your out of your area code, my cell is from 1,000 miles away and when i called i had to tell them to transfer me to 911 in my area i currently in. MJ has fixed this issue with 911 adding your physical address on your account/phone line.
When 5G arrives by the end of 2018 in UK and rollout in 2019, landlines are dead, also sat dishes, tv freeview ariel's, fm radio, even DAB. Sky know this and now ending sat and going full by new Qbox just like Tivo (Virginbox). Even EETV box now starting to get tv from broadband instead of freeview. Freesat, freeview, landlines, 2G, 3G, fm, dab, land broadband by adsl and fibre be dead, as 5G be doing all of this. 5G be doing as miniWifimax and not like 3.95G(LTE) or 4G(LTEA). Most 4G in UK is actually 3.95G so they save technology money and spend the budget later on 5G. EE 3.95G network is currently faster that Vodaphones LTEA 4G network. EE patched their 3G network up, just like freeserve analog 3Com 56K modems went V90 and V92.
I bought the Obi1062 phone and I love it! Basically a phone with the Obi box built in. Free everything and I have the GV app on my phone, so the number goes where I go. Couldn't be happier.
Here's a couple things I'd like to point out if you are watching in 2019: 1. Not sure if Obihai still works, but I looked into setting up my own Asterisk PBX on Google voice last year, but Google yanked support for it and updated their EULA to prohibit it. 2. If you have a Magic Jack Plus or newer, you can use it with or without a computer. You simply connect it to your modem with ethernet your set to not need a PC. It's great if you travel out of country too. Simply load the app on your cell phone or take the MJ with you. Lastly, I hooked my MJ into my home's POTS lines so it powers every jack in the house. It was as easy as disconnecting from the street and plugging the MJ into on of the phone jacks in the house. I used a splitter on this jack so I could still have a phone plugged into it too. The only downside to this is that if you plug in to many phones, the volume and quality gets week. You also want to use phones with electronic ringers with the ring volume on low as that can stress the MJ too. I've looked for a booster to remedy this, but have not found one. One work around is to use cordless phones as they are self powered.
I'm guessing when you purchased the T-Mobile 3-1 sim card, you created an account to port your number. When the number ported to your account you just returned the sim card. Am I correct? This piggybacks off another question I saw down below. (At time 10:10 "and when I was done with this I just returned it to Target and got my money back" So tell us how were you able to remove the SIM card from its holder, install the T-Mobil SIM card in your phone and then return it to Target.)
Although Magic Jack isn't free, it does have a box that plugs into your router so your computer doesn't have to stay on 24/7 so you don't miss a call. But when my paid subscription is up I just might switch to Google voice. It's just a second line I use on my desk anyway so no need to migrate the number, I'm fine with a new one. Magic Jack does have a nice feature that when I get a voice mail it sends me an e--mail with the message attached so I always know within a minute of getting it.
...and here we are, four years later in 2020, in a middle of a global health crisis, watching your video! Very informative and God, I need to catch up! What microphone is that? It sounds AMAZING! BEST sound I've gotten from a video on RUclips EVER! Let me know, please! I'm about to buy one for my classes; computer mic is crap! Great job, man!
Thanks... Not very easy and not a quick process (7 Days) but I did follow your steps and they worked. Longest part was porting the landline to a tracfone and then to Google. Now I only pay for internet. Cut Cable TV and the Phone. Bill went from $215 to $74.
ScribbleScrabble to speed the actual convo up cause they do chitchat a lot...my mom was telling me about her friends mom ..come to find out the friend was a lady she met while straightening out a directv bill
WARNING to those who record phone calls. In some states, like here in Florida, if you record a phone call without the other persons permission or knowledge, you have committed a felony. This simulation is fine as DeV was not recording a live person.
warren warburton Eleven states require the consent of every party to a phone call or conversation in order to make the recording lawful. These "two-party consent" laws have been adopted in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. However most, if not all (I don't know the law in every state ;) ) including Florida are misdemeanors if done privately with no illegal intent or done for commercial gain. Illinois ruled the "two party consent" law as unconstitutional in 2014 and should probably be removed from this list but technically they have changed the law so they are still on the "two party consent" list. Chances are very unlikely one would ever be convicted of a felony unless a repeat offender recording calls for illegal purposes or commercial gain. Federal law is "one party consent" with some reasonable exceptions. If you are unsure, get permission in writing or on recording first is the best policy.
I have had much the same experience. It's like magic when you are polite and understand how this works. Great announcer voice by the way! I hope you're getting paid a lot of $$$ for it! It's perfect.
Great video btw! Extremely informative, very helpful, great research etc, People dont seem to realize how much work is involved in preparing for videos like this, all the talking points & research involved. A++ work!
Oh yeah, a lot of phones can produce AMZING pictures but need the right lighting conditions which is why people say smartphone cameras are bad, my iPod touch 6 could do similar quality.
Disagree about being "nice." Corporations should be well informed about pissed off customers. Don't try to silence people or yourself with fake niceness.
Used the info provided here and learned that currently Google Voice will port Cellular numbers or lines NOT a Landline phone line. Had to port the Landline number to a cell carrier and a day later the number was valid as a Cell number. A Google Voice verification call is made to your Cell line (the ported one) for service verification and once that checks your number is fully OK for porting. I had no problems after that.
But you know you don't have to plug your magicjack into the PC anymore right? Could just plug it into the router and it will work. This was supported long before you made this video, before anyone says look at the date.
All the phone lines are dead somehow in my house. Literally dead. No sign, nothing. So i may switch to the Obi. Great video. Everything was straight foward.
My Cox cable company lost my land line functionality and hasn't been able to fix it without goting to a level 2 tech. I'm not going to keep trying to get it working anymore so this is a must try.
Thing is with google services is you don't know if its going to still exist tomorrow...

There is no progress on Google Voice website, it looks like their old products, I think they kinda "forgot" about this service. They don't even advertise it anywhere.
Actually it has a new(ish) looking interface now, but as far as features, I don't know. I've never used it until now. I hope they stick around though, since I just set up phone service with them.
Here's the deal: December of last year I dropped Comcast television services and opted just for their Internet. Fine, no problem with one caveat. I switched my home phone service over to Consumer Cellular and lost faxing capability in the process. So I'm looking for other ways to fax. Don't get me wrong, I really really hated losing the ability to fax from home, but overall, it was worth it. Now looking for an alternate way to fax, I discovered Dev and this video. After viewing the same I have to say: "Are you kidding me??" You make a 13 minute video touting how simple the process is switching to Google Voice when it's anything but simple, for anyone who cares enough to really "listen". There was one advantage though. It reminded me that I already did some homework on this unit and decided that the effort to get what I wanted was far too great. So I'll just stick to what I need instead. Thanks Dev.
Got this message when I tried the Google Voice Porting tool - "Please note: at this time, number porting to Google Voice is not available for land line numbers or corporate mobile numbers." ?
Land lines are handy when your mobile phone battery is depleted, or when your mobile phone is lost, stolen, or broken. If you have a problem with your mobile phone you can call your provider (phone service provider or cell phone provider) on your land line and have them talk you through fixing the problem with your mobile phone service (or with the mobile phone itself). This video is very helpful and I may consider porting my landline over to Google Voice. (I already have a Google Voice number, but for the many places that have my land line number, it would be helpful to have a second Google Voice number. I would just associate it with one of my other GMail accounts.)
Aquam Diamand. I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I have an interesting/nice voice that I should ‘bank’ on it. How? I’ve been searching for voice work to no avail. Am I using the wrong word[ing]?
@@Valentinathevamp the best way to do it is to market yourSELF (with your own website to showcase sound clips of your voice. etc.) Utilize SEO, and social networking to get people to visit. If you build it, and you are good, then not only will they come but you can do business.
@@RawFitChris why is it that Magic Jack cannot be used to call the United States Virgin Islands. I have used it for years and now I'm told, if you call its international and I have not paid for it. Don't you guys know that the Virgin Islands are part of the U.S.?
Landline voice quality is way, way, way better than VoIP and/or cellular phone voice quality. Even rotary phones are better than mobile phones when it comes to voice quality.
Realizing this video is a little bit old, but even 3 years ago a MagicJack did NOT have to be plugged into your computer to work. It plugs straight into your router and basically sets itself up on it's own. Although I actually use an Obi and Google Voice, MagicJack is a good option for some people. E911 is included and you can take it with you anywhere overseas and you can both receive and make calls with your stateside number showing up on caller ID. This is great for those retiring in foreign countries, that need a stateside number to prevent their stateside bank and credit card companies from freaking out. The minute you call from a foreign number, banks and credit card companies will sometimes immediately lock your accounts down to prevent fraud.
Great material, DeV! Really informative. I would suggest a quick headsup for your followers: landlines work independently from the power grid. So if there are power outages on your area, and suppose there´s no power, and your cell or families' mobiles' have run out and need to reach them in case of an emergency there'll be a problem. DeV, in your opinion, what would be a workable solution? A No-Break system? JUst unplug from the Obi box, and hook it back up to the phone outlet? Thanks!
Really nice, thorough video about what can be a complicated issue for many. Some of us still need 'home phones' (in my case, for my very ill mother who doesn't know how to use cells) and this video made making the change and ultimately, saving money, easy.
When my parents moved they had to switch from Comcast to Cox, but they wanted to keep their home phone number that they've had for over 20 years. So I ported it to Tmobile from Comcast, then from Tmobile to Google Voice. Hooked up an Obihai to their Cox internet, signed up for Anveo 911 service, and it works like butter.
That's true for landline in the USA, also. But when you go "around" or don't use local wired phone service. 911 operators may be in India. You have to have your ph and address in the Indian database so they can call the fire dept a mile from you house.
I got Magicjack years ago at Walmart. $40 bucks a year. Plugged into my router. I use a Panasonic wireless handset system with 4 phones placed throughout the house. Has answering and caller ID. Bada Boom.
I utilize MagicJack for my OUTWATS. Similar to the OBI200, the MJ VOIP dongle doesn't require being connected to a computer anymore, but can be when traveling, for it also connects to Ethernet via Cat5, is powered by a mains wall wart on UPS and drives the phone connection which in my case is wired to the whole house on the second pair making it line two. Do remember to disconnect that pair from the MaBell copperloop at the junction box so MagicJack is not powering the phone poles all the way back to the central office - the MagicJack dongle has enough power to ring the house but not the world. I use the forwarding feature of MagicJack to send return calls to GoogleVoice to take advantage of each bonus feature. I enjoy getting texts of voice messages, record incoming call with a press of the 4 key and GV ringing a multitude of devices, mobile phones, laptops and tablets with Hangouts as well as TextNowk and the wired to the wall MaBell copper loop original to the house. I'm satisfied with the DSL bandwith - not saving any money there but I've appreciated the stability of that number since 1956. Other legacy devices work well such as DSL, Fax, Watson, answering service and 911. Being not interested in saving money, I considered 100% VOIP, but GoogleVoice refuses to forward to GoogleVoice, so this hybrid arrangement suits me fine and I find comfort in the stability and reliability wired to the wall copperloop MaBell and enjoyed internet and phone service during power outages as a UPS drives all my phone/internet equipment, but not the computers or TV - I'm good with laptop/tablet/mobile battery power. The plan was to charge the COMS UPS with solar, I have the gear, just not the yet the effort.
Does this work in the UK too? Had a look on there and it only seems to be standard VOIP stuff, like you can only call people who use google hangouts. etc
I think Google Voice in the UK is limited to just that or per call charges at the moment. The cool thing about the box is that it doesn't work with _just_ Google Voice. UK VoIP to real phones are rare but there's a few like Voipfone that I think would work with this. It should support most SIP services so if you find one over there, it might be worth a shot. Most UK ISPs require a landline for service anyways though so at that point it might just be a duplicate service.
+Larry Bundy Jr I doubt that international calls are free, but calls to the US would be free(since it's based here). I'll gladly send you my magic jack that I don't use Larry! :) I enjoy your content as well mate! Cheers
Well, It started out pretty interesting. But as he started talking faster, then faster, then faster I started to glaze over and although I listened all the way to the end. I retained so little I think it would take me days to ever get it done! Thanks for trying and good luck to anyone who gets this done!
It does take several days to complete the process, but, if you follow the steps correctly, it should work without problems, as it did for me. Here are written instructions: www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-port-your-landline-number-to-google-voice/ and also here: cordcuttingreport.com/port-phone-number-google-voice/

This was an awesome video, I had no idea that this was possible, but I wondered will it work if I use it to call some one who only has a land line, or they don't have email dose this only work between two Google accounts what if you try to use it to call someone who dose not have a gmail's account or what if they don't have internet and only have a land line can I still use this to call them? Please advise me, thank you Laura in uk
Laura that was a bunch of questions. 1. It will work if the person you call only has a land line. 2. They do not need email 3. The person you calling does not need a google account. 4. The person your calling does not need a gmail account. 5. The person your calling does not need internet either. The only person that needs this is the person setting it all up which is YOU ! Once you do all that your good to go.
Magic jack also works in a wall plug with no computer, since like 2012. Also GVoice has been talking about shutting down sometime soon. Not sure how long this would last.
This is similar to what I did with my ripoff ISP. Although no phone involved, I was offered a deal for basic TV, and some 12 mbps dwnld speed ( years ago, yes) at a decent price around $80. They claimed when asked, that this is not a limited time promotion.. ya right, in a short time, the bill is now tagged with blast boost ($15) add on, to which I never ask for or agreed to pay, and the bill went up to $125 a month. They are evil criminal bastards.
I use Vonage for home phone service and pay $18.72/month -- this is the total amount with all taxes and fees. It includes E911 service and has features such as call forwarding, the ability to simultaneously ring another phone (e.g. cell phone), the ability to block numbers, receiving e-mails with voicemail attached as a .wav file and a voice-to-text transcription (which is pretty good, so long as the caller is coherent). For this price, I also get unlimited domestic calling. Not too bad. Another option for calls is using FaceTime audio. I use this from my iPad with headphones to call friends on their iPhone or iPad. The audio quality is beyond spectacular. It's far better than any landline I've ever had -- even better than an old POTS line with an old Western Electric/Bell System rotary and Touch-Tone phones. It's even better than the call quality between two iPhones over cellular. Plus, the data use is extremely low. Of course, it's not exactly a home phone replacement like Vonage.
I generally agree with your statement about being super nice to the cable reps, that's usually my goal on those calls. I will say though that it just took 12 phone calls and 5 hours of my time to get my bill straightened out with Verizon, and it wasn't until I WASN'T nice (the dude called me a liar repeatedly even though I have all of the emails and dates to give him) that they actually seem to have it right. So...your mileage may vary.
So DeV, this video is 3yrs. old, are you still using this method? Also, I note from your bill you were holding, your Carrier was Cox Communications. I have Cox also, but I only have internet through them. I have an actual landline through Birch, now Lingo Communications not VOIP like Cox appears to have. If you have ideas on how to save on a conventional landlines, with loosing landline functionality (ie:911) I'd like to see a video on that. I would like to not have to give up my hardwired Landline. It works great during power outages.
@@johnhajuno Yes, it is still working fine. I have the one with two lines, and I connected one to my printer and use it for fax, although faxes are not important any longer.
I fax through Google Voice using the Obi200, it's a little slow, but it does work. Nice thing is you can set a second google number to the thing and add a special ring that your fax can answer. It's a neat box, glad I have it. A few years ago my DSL line got severed just as fiberoptics were being piped through my front yard, so I got onto the Gigabit Bandwagon, screw DSL! Gigabit is awesome!
You sir, just saved me from having to pay 30 bucks per month for a landline. You can use google Hangouts with Hangouts dialer with your cell phone. And have your cell phone as your home phone + cell phone. They will have different rings also. I would have never thought to even try this if not for your video. Thank you!

I was using Google Voice over VOIP using Obi wired into an office phone system, which I set up myself, about 5 years ago. I was renting office space and I just set up my little system in the server room and plugged it in and my personal line routed right into the same phone system everyone else used. It worked just like all the regular office phone numbers. It was great. Not too hard to set up, either.
Good video. Here in Ontario, Canada, one alternative to using a 911 service like mentioned in the video is simply to call the Ontario Provincial Police's 800 number. When they pick up, tell them that you need to be transferred to 911 & they will do it.
Hey Dev! Been watching your last few videos and I think you can really become a major channel like Linus or MKBHD :) Keep striving and keep the videos up :)
Who Knew!:) Anyway Thanx Guy. I ported my cell no. to GV a few months back, but when I tried my landline it was not supported. I switching up my Cable Carrier and didn't want to lose my 212 no., so parked it at Number Barn for 2 bucks a month (basic level). NB is a company that will port and park any no. land, or cellular for as long as you need it to, so that you don't lose it. So this video was on point in guiding how to temporarily port to a SIM card. 👍:)
Just an FYI(not sure if it's been said before or not) but Magic Jack never needed a PC to be on all the time. That's merely an optional feature of the device. Its always been able to plug into the wall and act independently of your PC, all it needs is an internet connection. In fact, I'm not even sure if the latest version still has the PC capability!(it might, I'm not sure)
WTF USA?? I pay 50 SGD (35 USD) per month for 1Gbps down AND up. This entire video is just a big mindfuck for me. Ugh. The more I know the more I facepalm about USA internet pricing.
I'm in Perth West Aussie and have had a Web Design Business for 17 years. My ISP only gives me just 4mbps down 0.75mbps up. It is utterly 3rd world and yet our effing government says technology is good... Lets help our entrepreneurs tackle the world. Pfffft. How. If I paid for this service it would be $50 p/m. I get mine free as I used to own my own ISP.
***** Hi Hussain ! Thanks for commenting, sir. Greeting to you and everyone in Iraq. I hope things are going better for you all these days. Insh'allah. Wow, your internet speed for the amount you pay is really not good. Sorry man. I hope you get cheaper faster Internet really soon. Cheers Dave from Australia
I've been using Obhai with my in-house cordless phones for over a year now. No more land line. For internet I have a Verizon hotspot that averages 22 Mbps which is unlimited flashed 4G LTE at $5 per month - you heard right Five dollars per month. This more than meets my internet needs.
just so everyone is aware... this doesn't work anymore. you cannot use Google voice on any analog telephone adapter anymore.
Why is that?
You guys are the friggin' best. I've been working on this one since I uploaded my last video two months ago and I was worried up until four hours ago that no one would care about a video about home phones because they'd be too boring, etc.
I'm breathing again. Love you guys. 😍
dude, your videos are the best. cant wait until the next one.
How can anyone not like a video made by DeV? I don't think you could even make anything close to boring.
Keep on keeping on and *STRIKE ON!!*
i love your vids please make more
It's really amazing!
I really enjoyed your last video on Collage and Gaming Laptops
I couldn't believe that was only your 2nd video! This channel is going places, and I'm glad to be a part of it this early on
Not his 2nd video, it's only the second video that he's put on his RUclips. He says in his older video that his college classes require him to make many videos so he's probably really experienced in making videos like this
Good to know. I was in shock that this guy had less than 5 videos and making super high quality content like it was nothing.
I can relate buddy, I can relate.
I dont want to tell him to upload more so we can satisfi our needs bit i dont want him to upload bad content, what do we do?
Vinicius Oliva Give him suggestions as to what to make videos about, for example.
Sure it takes time to make the videos but not too long.
Land line companies HATE HIM! Learn how he saved $60/ Month through this neat trick!

Excellent video.
i took your advice in buying an acer chromebook instead of a new laptop for school work and honestly its been great
I've got a macbook mpro and it's better than a chromebook because in my school we use alot of programming and I can't dowload certain program in a chromebook
i do my coding at home (dorm) with my old laptop.
Lmao im not rich im just saying just buy a chromebook if you can't
Just get a fairly cheap laptop and run OSX on a virtual machine :)
Only 25k subs w/ this production value?
Damn. Keep it up, DeV.
I just reviewed your video and used the information for the second time. This time, since I was already down to just internet service, I was able to get them to offer me 500Mbs service for only $45 per month, when I had been getting 60Mbs for $55 per month. WIN!!! Thank you so much for this very informative video!
Don't even care about phones, but his voice is so soothing!
It's a radio voice if I've ever heard one.
I wanted to let you know that I just had that 'chill' conversation with Frontier. Result: I just doubled my internet speed...and they're bringing me a new router! I also bought the Obihi. I brought the home # over to an existing wireless line I had. My husband thinks I'm a genius. No, DeV is!
Oh, but You are - kind of a domestic genius :D I agree with Your H-man, DeV showed You an idea (great 1 btw) but it's not like a miracle happened by itself ;)
xtc79 is this comment through Google translate? Because it makes no sense.
good job heather
I was paying Frontier $100 a month for 200/200. I was out shopping with my wife and there was a Comcast guy set up in the store. I talked to him a while about my service and he offered me Gig/25 for the same $100, so I told him I would think about it. When I got home I called Frontier and told them I was thinking of taking that offer. Before my coffee could go cold the retention specialist at Frontier offered me 500/500 for $60 a month with no expiry date... Win!
What deal did Frontier give you? Speed and price? Thx
This dude's 3 videos are better than all of our videos combined, I love this guy

I think the term you are looking for would be 'Traditional POTS'
The Cable Companies COULD run drops with 12v to power modems and keep service online but they DONT.

Your thumbnail looks so freaking.... sad, that just for a second, it looked like my Dad.
This actually made me laugh
I have had this set up like for 5 years, with an Obi for two lines, and it works flawlessly. Two lines for free and I also connected a fax to one of the lines. Hope it will work like that forever.
꧁Inolvidable꧂ how did you put this together
@@marchellejordan347
@@inolvidable. Hi this is very interesting. Do you know if I can make international phone calls with Obi? Or is there a fee for each country?
Wonderful presentation, _especially_ with the clear audio. Glad you set up the mic - audio is every bit as important as the visual
Plus no stupid annoying background music so prevalent with RUclips videos
With Majic Jack you dont leave your computer on all night only your modem. I have had mine for 3 years and it works fine .
Yes and MJ only charges $4 instead of $15 for 911, but doesn't have service that notifies the neighborhood if you use 911.
@@digitalgods5568 Cell phone have the same problem with 911. if your out of your area code, my cell is from 1,000 miles away and when i called i had to tell them to transfer me to 911 in my area i currently in. EE already do this in UK, as had it for over a year. Hidden product the offer.
Will you remember me when you get famous?
nope :)

I bought the Obi1062 phone and I love it! Basically a phone with the Obi box built in. Free everything and I have the GV app on my phone, so the number goes where I go. Couldn't be happier.
Here's a couple things I'd like to point out if you are watching in 2019:
Dev: Thanks for the excellent advice! I do disagree with the landline having poor quality. Landline phones to me, have MUCH BETTER FIDELITY!
Yes...and if you have the "California Lifeline" service...it's only about $10/month.
Good vid. Thanks for the info bro. Never mind the trolls, that can find fault in anything, but their life choices.

Yeah, the tech is pretty easy, but they make porting numbers as hard as they are legally able to. They don't like losing customers.
Does this work internationally? perhaps in New Zealand?
Did you have to purchase a service plan with Tracfone in order to port to google voice?
@@jaywashburn9554 Port to a prepaid ATT sim plan for $10. Then port to Google Voice.
Omg must try. Mines also like that
That phone conversation was definitely legit, not staged at all... nice video though.
Ricoshred what's a reason for faking it anyway?
Ricoshred No shit, Sherlock. Looks like you didn't pay attention. It was a simulation of what a conversation with a "Cable Company Inc." would be.
It's perfect.

dude this is swesome. Thats for taking us throught the cable call. I do a very simular thing each time my service "special" is up.
Wow are you actually using a smartphone as a camera? Impressive
Oh yeah, a lot of phones can produce AMZING pictures but need the right lighting conditions which is why people say smartphone cameras are bad, my iPod touch 6 could do similar quality.
Because Samsung is the best in smartphone camera
Yup, just need good light and sound. Record in 4K, upload, and 1080p will look pretty good (thats what im watching in)
***** I don't think that's true, it might be comparable. But the camera on the s6 still better than iPhone 7
Ray Wei what does the iphone 7 have to do with the new pixel?
I just wanna say thanks you. It was a little harder then u made it sound but totally worth it. Now im saving $10 per month

Great Internet Company
Thanks Dev.
Great job!
Now, how do I cut out my carrier-based home internet provider?
Got this message when I tried the Google Voice Porting tool - "Please note: at this time, number porting to Google Voice is not available for land line numbers or corporate mobile numbers." ?
Port the number to a mobile first then port to GV
Land lines are handy when your mobile phone battery is depleted, or when your mobile phone is lost, stolen, or broken. If you have a problem with your mobile phone you can call your provider (phone service provider or cell phone provider) on your land line and have them talk you through fixing the problem with your mobile phone service (or with the mobile phone itself). This video is very helpful and I may consider porting my landline over to Google Voice. (I already have a Google Voice number, but for the many places that have my land line number, it would be helpful to have a second Google Voice number. I would just associate it with one of my other GMail accounts.)
You have an amazing voice for video demos or audio books. I hope your are banking on it if not what are you waiting for :)

Landline voice quality is way, way, way better than VoIP and/or cellular phone voice quality. Even rotary phones are better than mobile phones when it comes to voice quality.
Yes, and that's one of the reasons I STILL don't use a cell phone.
That used to be the case. No more. My VOIP calls the last three years have been as good as regular landlines ever were.
Thanks!
Just subscribed. I’m barely surviving, I need every penny I can save. Now, I just have to get my son to watch the video and so all this for me.

In Canada, ANY landline telephone will dial 911 at need, with or without arrangements with the phone company. It's a legal Emergency service.
That's true for landline in the USA, also. But when you go "around" or don't use local wired phone service. 911 operators may be in India. You have to have your ph and address in the Indian database so they can call the fire dept a mile from you house.
This is why I voted for Trump. MAGA!

@@rickcarp5453 how do you do That?
Your videos are amazing! Glad to be a pretty early sub because I think this channel will blow up some day :D
Does this work in the UK too? Had a look on there and it only seems to be standard VOIP stuff, like you can only call people who use google hangouts. etc
Larry Bundy Jr Ayy Larry
I think Google Voice in the UK is limited to just that or per call charges at the moment. The cool thing about the box is that it doesn't work with _just_ Google Voice. UK VoIP to real phones are rare but there's a few like Voipfone that I think would work with this. It should support most SIP services so if you find one over there, it might be worth a shot. Most UK ISPs require a landline for service anyways though so at that point it might just be a duplicate service.

Aah thanks, out of curiosity can you make international calls for free with it?
+Larry Bundy Jr wondering this, want to be able to be contacted by my relatives in China
Here are written instructions: www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-port-your-landline-number-to-google-voice/ and also here: cordcuttingreport.com/port-phone-number-google-voice/
your editing is so goooooooooooooood :)
Hot voice peel me a grape then read to me from your "my book". 💋
At time 10:10 "and when I was done with this I just returned it to Target and got my money back" So tell us how were you able to remove the SIM card from its holder, install the T-Mobil SIM card in your phone and and than return it to Target?
Once you do all that your good to go.
excuse me? who let you create videos with such quality content?
Magic jack also works in a wall plug with no computer, since like 2012. Also GVoice has been talking about shutting down sometime soon. Not sure how long this would last.
𝐵𝒶𝓀𝒶 𝒪𝓅𝓅𝒶𝒾 with the sudden influx of users its possible they'll reconsider.
Medo Gabr I don't see why, GV is costing google a lot of money.

Not google but a threat from the others that would lose business to free google services. Considered unfair competition
Should you be taking this video down? The OBI company no longer support this device and Google voice no longer works with it....
It seems he has discontinued this YT channel. His most recent video shows it is from around 2018 (approx. 6 years ago).
Mine works fine with Google voice.
Sean Spark Yes I am going thru the same.

This comment is proof that I was here way before dev was popular.
Been here since his second vid. One day man, one day.

Can I join? :P
I dont know where you are at, but landlines work awesome where I am at. I use one, and dont plan on canceling it. I dont trust the ip phone.
Are you going to make editing tutorials? Pls do, you're an amazing editor!!
My magicjack hooks dirictly to my router i dont need my pc
But, you have to pay annually. With OBI I only paid once when I bought it, then it is free forever.
@@inolvidable. does obi still work? As this video was posted 4 years ago.
@@johnhajuno Yes, it is still working fine. I have the one with two lines, and I connected one to my printer and use it for fax, although faxes are not important any longer.
@@inolvidable. Sweet! Thank you very much for the info and reply.
@@johnhajuno Y.A.W.
You really saved $7 and increased your streaming.👀
Update please
You sir, just saved me from having to pay 30 bucks per month for a landline. You can use google Hangouts with Hangouts dialer with your cell phone. And have your cell phone as your home phone + cell phone. They will have different rings also. I would have never thought to even try this if not for your video. Thank you!
The call sounded scripted but still a great video
collaborative project Yeah, he wasn't talking to a real "cable inc" worker
haha
xD
collaborative project it was obv a simulation of what an avg person calling an avg cable comp. might go like. he never said or tried to make It seem like it was his call to his cable company

Not too hard to set up, either.
you must have worked as one of us or knew someone who did lol thank you for saying to be nice :-) it really does make everyone easier to work with

Great Internet Company
just me or do the representatives etc. sound like robots?
Good video. Here in Ontario, Canada, one alternative to using a 911 service like mentioned in the video is simply to call the Ontario Provincial Police's 800 number. When they pick up, tell them that you need to be transferred to 911 & they will do it.
Been here since 20k, remember this comment when DeV's channel blows up.
That’s a “whole lota busy going on!”
Geez..
Larry
These are not real calls. Sounds simulated at best, staged more likely. I’ve never heard a sales rep that sounded like that guy.
In the description, he says it's a simulated call.
Just an FYI(not sure if it's been said before or not) but Magic Jack never needed a PC to be on all the time. That's merely an optional feature of the device. Its always been able to plug into the wall and act independently of your PC, all it needs is an internet connection.
In fact, I'm not even sure if the latest version still has the PC capability!(it might, I'm not sure)
wtf.... do you still have homephones?
Where I live, I haven't seen one in action in like 5yrs
WTF USA??
I pay 50 SGD (35 USD) per month for 1Gbps down AND up. This entire video is just a big mindfuck for me. Ugh. The more I know the more I facepalm about USA internet pricing.
It's shit in many places... I pay £60 monthly for "up to 35mb/s" aka 10mb/s down and less than a mb/s up....
I pay 8.65 EUR for 1gbps down 200mbps up :)
Răzvan Mitre that is awesome ;)
I'm in Perth West Aussie and have had a Web Design Business for 17 years. My ISP only gives me just 4mbps down 0.75mbps up. It is utterly 3rd world and yet our effing government says technology is good... Lets help our entrepreneurs tackle the world. Pfffft. How. If I paid for this service it would be $50 p/m. I get mine free as I used to own my own ISP.

Hi Hussain !
Thanks for commenting, sir. Greeting to you and everyone in Iraq.
I hope things are going better for you all these days. Insh'allah.
Wow, your internet speed for the amount you pay is really not good. Sorry man. I hope you get cheaper faster Internet really soon.
Cheers
Dave from Australia
I've been using Obhai with my in-house cordless phones for over a year now. No more land line. For internet I have a Verizon hotspot that averages 22 Mbps which is unlimited flashed 4G LTE at $5 per month - you heard right Five dollars per month. This more than meets my internet needs.
