Very helpful. My wife just got a Samsung A8 and now I understand the principles behind WiFi calling. The bigger challenge was finding where to go on the device to set it up.
If you don’t have service, chances are you’re not gonna have WiFi. And if your power goes out, that’s a whole different story. My carrier told me to put WiFi calling on for the hurricane coming (Dorian), but what use is it if your power goes out? Do people usually lose service during storms?
I don't know if this is standard, but my router has a backup battery so even if you lose power it will still work for a period of time. Might be useful for you if you lose power often!
@@p3757 Of course, your Internet connection could fail too. Even "POTS" telephone service, with a pair of wires going back to the central office is disappearing, in favour of VoIP over cable or fibre.
One thing you forgot to mention is when you set up WiFi calling, you will be required to provide a physical address for 911 calls. For this reason, I don't normally connect to other WiFi, as I wouldn't want to find myself providing a wrong address, in the event of an emergency. As for whether WiFi calling uses minutes, it's irrelevant for me, as I have unlimited Canada wide calling & texts and 90 GB of data (which I have never even come close to using). Also, HD voice is also available with regular voice over IP via the Internet. I have set up several office phones that use it. I have a Google Pixel 6 on Rogers, a major Canadian cell, Internet and cable TV company.
Thanks for nice explanation of WiFi calling. I would like to add one more thing, when you are abroad you can also use the WiFi calling to avoid expensive roaming charges. I tried this and works excellently. So when you are in Bangkok for example your Family and friends remain connected with you and vice versa.
This video was excellent on finally explaining this concept to me, thank you so much. Important follow up. At 1 point you mention the amount of data a wifi voice or video call uses. I'm not an expert on the lingo, but I thought the whole point of Wifi in general is to not use your data. So if Wi-Fi calling is using your Wi-Fi service, why does data come into play? This is important to me to know because I don't have unlimited data and so I don't want to use Wi-Fi calling through my wifi service if it turns out it's still going to eat up my minimal data anyway. Sorry for my confusion and I hope u answer!
Quick question should I have my Wi-Fi calling on all the time or off I'm with AT&t and I have a Samsung Galaxy s22 I just want to know if my calls will go through if I have if it's going to affect my calls through my regular I have unlimited data unlimited text I just want to know if I should have my Wi-Fi calling on or off
Good question Yogesh. If you use the method of WiFi calling through your carrier (if they support it) it should show up as the same number for calls on a cellular network.

I still do not know the difference between having my regular Wi-Fi turned on and Going into Cellular settings and turning on "Wi-Fi Calling". I do have unlimited plan, but my VPN only works until I reach a certain limit on data usage for the month. So, my goal is to figure out how much of my Wi-Fi data to use, versus how much Cellular data to use (which does have a limit). Any clarification, or suggestions?
My wifi calling flips from weak cell service to wifi calling and I want it to only use WiFi calling when I'm at home. Because I still get people who call me complaining they can't hear me. I look at the phone and it's showing that wifi calling is turning on and off.
I have a Galaxy J2 (i know it's too old). I did everything you said but it didn't work. what could be the problem with it? I enabled wifi calling but all I get is my cellular data is too low to make a call.
Cellular data is access to the internet and wi-fi is the internet. However, wi-fi doesn't count agaist your cellular data. I hope that makes sense to you.
I was going to set this up on my att s7 edge but it wants you address for 911 purposes. I decided not to set it because I'm assuming if I'm on a wifi network away from my house and need to dial 911 it will use my home address as the location I'm at, not the real location I'm at. So if I'm at a coffee shop and dial 911 it will send emergency services to my house... What good is that?
Hi Duchy, that's an interesting dilemma. The 911 address sounds a lot like what MicroCell requires for GPS Location Verification. If you are at your home address, linked to your WiFi network and using WiFi calling, the 911 feature should work. However, if you're using WiFi calling on a different WiFi network (coffee shop, for example), I don't think it would still link to your home address. Not sure which carrier you are using, but Verizon posted some really helpful information about the 911 addresses purpose here: www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-204184/
I drove for a company that had a terminal in Lorado, TX, and every time I went to the new building I had to go inside and use Wi-Fi calling to make calls. At the old building I didn't have any issues and could use either data or Wi-Fi to make calls. The new building was five or so miles north of the old one and was made of metal. The good thing was I wasn't awakened by telemarketers and scammers calling. That Qualcomm system in the truck worked though. I started using Wi-Fi calling at home and sometimes I'll have a dropped call. I've never had that happen using regular cell towers except with another carrier.
Great video. Very informative. But I still have a few questions. How can Aunt Carol have wi-fi set up to work out in the pasture? If I'm at home then I have my own wifi and I know the password for my wifi, but if I'm out around town or at Aunt Carol's ranch then how will wifi be available? In a coffee shop I can use their wifi but only if it's free/guest wifi or if the password is posted. How will wifi calling work when I'm near OTHER people's wifi? I know, dumb questions, but I'm still a bit confused.
I don't know why Aunt Carol has WiFi in the pasture, youll have to ask her, but any WiFi that you can connect to should work, unless they block it with their firewall. In my local community centre they seem to block everything other than browsers, so it wouldn't work there.

You do need an active SIM card. That is to route your call to the subscriber network to complete the call; unless you're using a network with call services such as MagicJack or so. Then, you do don't need the SIM card. They would assign a phone number to you. That comes on handy with your tablet that doesn't have a SIM card slot, just wi-fi.

My brother has an S9+ and my wife an S7 using the same carrier, both have WIFI-calling working just fine. Any idea how I can get this resolved?
What I think is that your phone doesn't support.
It has been solved by changing the phone to the same model but one that is delivered without a free SIM card from the Belgian Telecom Provider Proximus.
Good vid, concise & precise. Thx

It's named "Wi-Fi CALLING". But if your cell phone's Wi-Fi Calling is turned on, does that also imply that calls RECEIVED will also be via wi-fi?

Wifi calling cuts in and out, has an echo and is very close to useless on my phone. Fortunately, I have good reception, so I just turn it off. I have MetroPCS and an LG phone. It's not just my phone either. I have two friends who live in different areas and they have the same problem.

Can I receive calls when on WiFi calling?
When you're on WiFi calling, your phone works exactly the same as when you're not.
Thanks, figured it out. For the holidays I am on call for my work. My sister lives in a rural area where I have no phone single. So in the past I’ve missed getting with family for holidays fearing I would miss an emergency call. But now I connect to her WiFi and all is great.@@James_Knott
does your phone have to be activated or could you call through Wi-Fi even if your phone is deactivated
