Thank you for showing where that setting was located. I did everything else thinking that this was VOIP by default then the app wouldn't work. But after this it did.
Thanks for the comment! I have an older phone as well with no sim card and I'm able to use Google Voice on that device via Wi-Fi. You just have to make sure to select 'Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data' under the 'Making and receiving calls' section.
@@spiritofMongan I don't think there is a native Google Voice app for computers. You'll need to use a web browser such as Chrome Edge to login and use Google Voice on the browser. If you're using Chrome or Edge there is app install button on the address bar that will make it as a web app.
Does the app have to be running in order to receive calls? (The way I worded that, does that even make sense?) I mean, if you have the app installed and set up, but then you don't have it actually open at the time the call is coming in.
hi! thanks for the video. question, if I enable my iPhone device will I receive calls to my original number still although I toggled on prefer wifi and mobile data?
You'll still be able to receive phone calls to your original number. When someone calls your Google Voice number (not your original number) it will show on the lock screen the incoming call and the Google voice icon underneath it. That indicates that someone is calling your Google voice number. One thing to note is if want to make an outgoing call using your Google Voice number you'll need to make the outgoing call within the Google Voice app.
Love your video.....but I have a question. I am using Tracfone for the past 15 years and just installed Google Voice because our vacation home has poor cell service. I can make GV call over wifi, but just like your phone on this video....any incoming call triggers the call banner and vibrates.....but no phone ringer? Is there any possible way to get the phone to ring like my regular phone app? I have watched a ton of tutorial videos and nothing seems to get me to the point I need....the phone to ring. I need it on wifi...not my carrier.
I noticed that too.IDK why ring isn't on by default. I had to go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced > Sound. "Default" is the same as "none." So I changed it to a ringtone. It didn't take at first, still missed calls, had to do al that _again,_ then it worked.
Hi Chris. GV is meant to be used as a second or backup line. However, you should not cancel your cell service. GV is not a replacement to your cell service because you still need some form of data connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) in order to use GV. GV also cannot make emergency calls.
Great video. Thank you. I was having issue with Verizon not playing nice with Google voice. But a simple reinstallation of google voice fixed the issue. Weird as "make and receive calls" defaulted to "use carrier only", no matter what I did.
Hello. I'm glad you were able to fix the issue. This happen to me once after updating the Google Voice app. For some reason it switch to 'use carrier only' instead of 'prefer over wi-fi and mobile data.' I had to reinstall the app in order to get it fixed.
The Make and Receive Calls option is not available under the settings? Is that option only available on a device that actually has cellular data/carrier connection? I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet that is wifi only.
Is there a way to forward my verizon phone Number to the google voice number? When I try to forward the verizon number to the google voice number it goes right to google voicemail. I am going to Europe and will have data but no phone, therefore want to use google voice to get my verizon calls over a SIM card.
I was able to make phone calls with my GV while using NordVPN on my phone. It should work internationally, but I have not had the opportunity to test it for international travel.
I am moving from the US to Portugal and may not have Wi-Fi in my home. I need a service to occasionally make and receive business calls and texts to and from the US. I keep reading that you can't use google voice without Wi-FI. Will I be able to use Google Voice from home if I don't have Wi-Fi? Could you please confirm this. Thank you
Hi Michele. You can use Google Voice with mobile data from a wireless carrier if you don't have Wi-Fi. The one thing you have to do is to make sure to select 'Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data' within the Google Voice app. Google has a support article on how you can change the settings. support.google.com/voice/answer/7649189?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=0 I highly recommend to test the calling ability once you have made the changes. You can test it by turning off your Wi-Fi on your smartphone and make sure you're connected to your cell service provider (i.e, AT&T, Verizon, etc....) and call your Google Voice number from a different phone.
I want to ask a very stupid question. Do I need to change the setting of my cellphone to “ allow wifi calling” besides changing the setting of Google Voice?
Hi Eni. You do not need to change the wifi calling settings that is on your cell phone. The most important part is to enable "Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data" is selected within the Google Voice app.
I can call into google voice no problem, but when i try make outbound calls to the contacts list in google voice it says can not call. It's an old cell that is wifi only no network like your set up.
Question: where are the settings on the computer to make and receive calls? I liked this video and also saved it. Just made the changes on my iPad & made a call.
Hi there. It should already be enabled if you're attempting to make and receive calls from a computer using a web browser. If you go the settings (gear icon on the right corner) and look under "My Devices." Do you see a device called "Web"? That would be the web browser you are using with Google Voice.
I can receive calls but when want to dial out I need a number to forward to. I’ve added my cell phone and it’s been verified. Now it keeps asking for a forwarded number when I dial out. I’ve added my number again then deleted it within the web site but then asks for a forwarding number. I can receive calls just fine. ???

This is great. I have a question. I live overseas. I have had an AT&T number that I want to move to Google voice so I can mostly receive bank verification codes. I believe this is one way to receive those codes when the AT&T phone does not work over here? I understand it's a 20 dollar fee to port my cell number. How do I activate the AT&T carrier when I go back to the states? If I land in the states, and I'm in the airport trying to call family, am I able to do that in advance or once I'm on the ground? Any ideas and help?
Hi Judy. Thank you for the comment. It would be best to not move your AT&T number to Google voice if you want to get bank verification codes. Most banks and other services are starting to not allow Google voice numbers to be used as a method to receive those type of verification codes. Do you have Wi-Fi calling enabled with AT&T?
