My parents are doctors and I hate when people think that nurses are less than doctors. Everyone needs to know that nurses are so so amazing and are very hard working. Nurses are so so close to their patients which is crucial. Nurses are amazing!
Leena A. Can i ask you a question ? I want to become a doctor but the thing that keeps me off guard is the fact that people day that doctors have no free time and that the only thing they do is working ALL the time. I too want to start a family but idk if you can being a doctor ? May be you know bc your parents are doctors
taehyung sure! You’re right, a doctor definitely has way less free time but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a family! It’s definitely possible you just have to be smart about your timing. I have to warn you, being a doctor takes years of studying so if you want to have a child before 26-28 it may not be the best choice. After that though, you can definitely take a maternity leave, book your schedule based on your children, etc. Pre schools and extended day programs at school are what my parents did to make sure we were supervised when we were younger. You could also get a nanny. There are many options so don’t stress! You can definitely be a doctor and have a family you just need to plan things out effectively. Hope this helped (ps good luck!!) 💘💘
Oh thank you so much for saying nurses are vital.I feel like that's what I hate about nursing and the only thing I hate. Is when people or doctors think nurses are less then doctors. I come from a family of all doctors and engineers and everyone all ways asks me why I didn't become a doctor.
i chose to wanting to be a Nurse instead of a doctor because i want to live and start my life earlier. some people may say it sounds crazy but i’m being 100%! doctors need 12 years of school and nurses need 4 and years of training. the second reason is because i feel like nurses are closer to their patients than doctors and i love it💓 i would love to be a NICU nurse...
Yes! I’m glad someone else said it. I also want to be a young, successful person and enjoy life NOW. I went into undergrad my first year with a doctors mindset and now in my 2nd year with a nursing mindset because I realized what I really want! You really have to look into the future and yourself to understand.
Omg I’m exactly the same I’m young but I wanna work in a NICU and like being a nurse you spend more time and are closer with your patients and family etc.
I wanted to be a pediatrician first too but after being hospitalized for lupus seeing how much the nurses worked hard dealing with me and I barely saw the doctor helped make my decision to be a nurse
@@frandiablaise7853 that is so awesome..when my elderly father was hospitalized, it was soo soothing to see caring nurses take care of him and be so kind and even kid around with him. It was the silvering lining of having to see my dad hospitalized. So thank you for the work that you do. We will all get old and to be treated with dignity and respect at that age is all that is asked.
“Why didn’t you become a doctor” I agree that it’s one of the WORST questions! 😩Like it is two very different pathways to become a nurse or to become a doctor 🤦🏾♀️ Like some people need to know the difference.
As a premed student, I’m constantly asked, “why not become a nurse?” Lol two completely different paths but I think nurses run the hospitals and are more one to one with patients.
This is so true My dad is a doctor and when ever he comes home he has to write all these reports about the patients and he continuously gets Phone calls from the hospital and he has to answer them. I am not saying he never has time for his family but it’s a lot of commitment to become a doctor. I could not agree more with you
Girl. We go through a lot of science classes (bio, chem, A&P, microbiology...) in college too. It’s literally a degree in science. It’s just not at the same capacity as doctors or people pursuing med school, obviously because we aren’t preparing to practice medicine. We learn the foundational science plus all the psychosocial “caring” stuff nurses are known and praised for. Many people think nurses are “just” nurses and that we “aren’t smart enough” to become doctors & that is not it. Personally there’s no way in hell I’d be cool with the doctor lifestyle of taking home my work, like you said. Work is work, it’s not my life 🤷🏼♀️
Cute Panda yes many doctors work from home remotely, being on call, taking calls from nurses and other hospital personnel. I’m sure they are able to check up on their patients from home. Some less than others. But hospitalists and internists stay busy, I’m sure, because they oversee so many patients and they’re ultimately the decision makers, they’re responsible for putting in orders. As a nurse I only take care of these patients for the duration of my shift. Once I’m home the patient is no longer my responsibility.
As a medical student, I completely agree with and respect your decision! I prioritize my career first before a family because I want to create an environment that is financially stable for my kids, as well as develop my career and practice to the point where I'm not working all hours of the day. We need nurses just as much as we need doctors, so thank you for caring for other human beings. It's an honorable role in and of itself.
I wanted to become a psychiatrist so badly but i knew I couldn't put myself through med school..So right now I'm majoring in nursing and I plan to become a psychiatric nurse practioner...literally the best of both worlds! & I hate when people ask me why I dont want to be a doctor..I know my limits and I know what i want. I feel like the nursing route is whats best for me and my goals.
Here in Nigeria, some people even ask you "so, you will become a doctor after your degree?" And you have to start explaining how nursing is different from medicine. How they are two parallel lines. How our job descriptions are different. Then after you get over that, they ask you "so,why not go for medicine instead of nursing?" And thats where you start rolling your eyes and re-explain the whole process. Then they pray for you and say "God will promote you to be a doctor very soon" I just die
Yessss!!! When I first started college I wanted to become a doctor but after sitting down and realizing how little they really interact with their patients and that’s one of the things I look forward to most about being a nurse. Having a family is also very important to me which is a lot more difficult to do while being a doctor. Another thing is that there are so many different routes that nurses can go and they can change their specialties whenever, doctors can’t.
Yeah. I’m a honors premed biomedical student and everything is narrowed down to what you are matched. Whereas the human cadavers, you have to be comfortable with it. However, the downside is being on call and knowing what orders/tests go into a patient. You can literally be on “vacation” and have to be back in a hospital settings when they need you. Doctors aren’t very one to one with patients, rather than being there for symptoms and discharge, but they put in the orders and deal more with paper work. Another downside is the number of math courses you have to take. It’s overwhelming because you have to balance out school, your personal life (e.i. kids, family, friends, bills), volunteer services (community, organizations, clinical), and school to get a “good enough” resume for medical school interviews. Not to mention is the massive student loan debt that accumulated interest.
Great video! In high school I decided that I wanted to become a doctor. I shadowed a pathologist and was sure that was what I wanted to do. Then I go off to college as a Biology major. It turns out that I loved some aspects of biology and hated the other. I hated chemistry and could not grasp the major concepts which I knew would have doomed me in Organic Chemistry which is a course all Med Schools require. I started shadowing and volunteering at a hospital in my college town and I slowly realized that I loved what nurses do. So here I am now waiting for my 2nd year of college to start as a pre nursing major. Hopefully I get in to nursing school. Keep up the great content!
fernando estrella, honestly organic chemist was completely different from inorganic chemistry. I truly did not feel like I needed any of my gen chem knowledge to be successful in organic. But glad you found nursing to be the right fit for you!
Me too! OMG! I found somebody here that's just like me. I hate Chemistry and that's the major reason why I'm into nursing. After taking some chemistry class I was like there is no way in hell I would be able to survive organic chemistry. I HATE CHEMISTRY! Lol good luck to both of us in our journey.
Hi! I’m almost done with my bachelor’s in psychology and I’ve really been starting to consider nursing as a career, and applying to an accelerated BSN program. I’ve been watching your videos and it’s been confirming a lot of my thoughts and feelings. Especially when you brought up the fact that your priority is going to be having a family so the strict shift schedule is important, that is exactly how I’ve been looking at my life. I just wanted to say thank you for all you’re doing, as a nurse and as a RUclipsr!
I never really knew it was extremely rude to ask a nurse this question. I just graduated high school so I usually asked “how did you decide nursing was the one rather than being a doctor?” because I’m not entirely sure which path I want to pursue. I appreciate you for enlightening me to this, because I’d hate to be coming off as rude without even knowing it.
I think people are more so annoyed when people ask why did you become a nurse over a doctor in a way that makes it seem like being a nurse is inferior to being a doctor. Or when then ask it in a way that seems like you're just "settling" for nursing. Like some people will say "oh you're so smart, why don't you be a doctor instead?" It makes it seem as if nurses can't be smart.
Adaeze Njoku (lol i forgot all about this comment!) I totally understand your viewpoint and I agree. I also feel like people are looking at the wage gap between the two rather than the actual skills and qualifications it takes for both professions.
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK! i'm in nursing school right now and i can't believe how many people have asked me "why i didn't go all the way?" already. So many people underestimate what nurses do but the psychosocial aspect is just as important as the more biomedical stuff that doctors do.
You got this honey! It's awesome you have a dream especially at such a young age! Look up lots of videos about anatomy and chemistry is my tip for you. It might seem like gibberish now, but you will be glad you did it in the long run! God bless you❤️❤️❤️
For us guys, that question is asked 10x more, here's what I say to people: Life is like a Box of chocolates. There's so many different choices. I just chose one that suited all my needs. And I like it, it was a super tasty choice 😁
Anthony Marquez You're a Male nurse too huh? It's all good bro, just being honest with it will never hurt you. Because most likely, 90% of the general public will either want to ask you about it or think in their head about it and wonder. We're curious creatures bro lol
Anthony Marquez My dad used to be a Surgeon and my mom was a Nurse. My dad was always working, he rarely had any time to relax, he was extremely depressed about life. He was so depressed he got his own apartment to be alone from me and my mom. He was never happy because at work he would work, then at home he would review all his patient files and prepare for next days surgeries and consults and EVERYTHING. Having a second hand experience from both sides of the coin, I can honestly tell you man, I never want to be a doctor. So for me it's very simple, I just don't ever want to be a doctor, I've seen what it did to my father & that's not the life I want. Honestly bro, we chose the best profession we could have chosen. Hold your head up high and say PROUDLY "I am a Male nurse. Ask me why I became a nurse, I will tell you why bahahaha" 🤘😁🤘
I am a male nursing student and I constantly get asked about why i am not studying medicine or did I flunk out of med school or something along those lines.
Anthony Marquez Ya just be honest about it fam. As soon as you accept the fact that you're a guy in a female dominated profession, that question will NEVER bother you again. My friends to this day are fucking around and calling a gay dude for being a nurse, and telling me how much they hate me for ruining their "Nurse fantasies" lol. It's all good bro, at the end of the day, it was your choice. You chose it, you're gonna be awesome, you'll do great things, and you'll be one amazing nurse.
Alexis Jack Why not just get a degree in something that isn't as risky and apply to med school? Just asking on why you took this path? Are you worried about getting in?
Why not pursue a different undergraduate degree? I wouldn’t go through all of nursing school just to end up in med school. Nursing school is VERY rigorous and time consuming and burnout is high.
So funny that you say your primary goal in life is to have a family. I just passed my NCLEX (yay!) And am working as a new nurse and I am so excited about where this career can take me.. but my number one goal in life is to be a good mom! I'm working hard to build a solid financial foundation so I can have kids and show them what it's like to work hard and be successful!
Agree with you, I'm a Doctor and we have worst social life, I take my work home all the time and I barely ever get to spend any time with my family. I have a lot of respect for Nurses, I admire their handwork, dedication and compassion towards the care of patients.
Peace be to you! I'm a new subscriber! I was in Nursing school about 25 years ago whilst working as a CNA! The Lord had different plans for me! I'm glad you mentioned asking "why didn't you become a doctor" question😬! I think you stated really good reasons for being a Nurse! I don't think the general public understand the FULL range of things that Nurses can do (e.g. education, research, administration, business, etc.). It really is a dynamic profession! My mother is a retired Nurse (worked for 43 years!). She practiced such a wide range of specialties (e.g. NICU, Geriatrics, Hospice, etc.)! I work with groups of OUTSTANDING Nurses and NPs. What do you think about Master's degree in NP being phased out in lieu of Doctorates (DNP)? I wish you the VERY best of succes in your positive endeavors!🤓
I had the EXACT same reasoning!! I initially wanted to become a pediatrician as well and I am now going into my senior year of nursing school to become a pediatric nurse! Love love love everything u said, literally took the words right out of my mouth 😄 I also get asked that question all the time about why i didn’t wanna go further and become an MD and I couldn’t agree with you more about how different Nursing is and all of its amazing perks that u mentioned. Thank u for being awesome! 🙌
Anna Zim I also want to become a pediatric nurse, I am currently a senior in high school. How long have you been in school? Have you only been in nursing school for those 4 years?
I'm torn between being a nurse or a doctor..When I was a fourteen I'm certain I wanted to be a pediatrician. I've planned my goals and possible pathways so I did a lot of research and preparation for this dream but then as time goes by and here comes realizations in life. Well let's just say perspective changes and then now I'm an in coming senior high student. I don't see myself taking other courses besides STEM though I got other dream jobs in mind I don't see them as options in the mean time for some reason. I honestly wanted to do a lot of things in my 20s and in my opinion I think I can hardly do a lot of things if I choose medicine. I respect all the doctors out there for me I see them as heroes and nurses too hehe God bless you guys especially these days. I usually don't comment too long but hey this matters to me so much and yeah. Thank you for this vid:) I think I know where am going.
Girl, I cringe at that question. I feel like it makes my profession sound like less than. I'm like its a completely different thing and I don't want to be a doctor. I feel like nurses contribute more to the quality of life for patients and like we're the ones who help will patients back to health. We each of our place, so those who want to be doctors go on ahead. I'mma stay right here with my nursing.
I’m planning on becoming a doctor, but there is something that is so lovely about nurses. I would be very proud to call myself a nurse. They know so much and are so funny and caring!
My sister is in medical school but I want to pursue nursing. It has nothing to do with me thinking I’m not “smart” enough yes her & I have different strengths but I just want my life to get started and also I want to spend time with patients (hopefully kids) & mentor them & care & be a support bc I feel like that’s really important. Thankfully my parents are super supportive of the both of us! (I’m still in high school) my brother is a pastor! So we all went/are going different paths but I’m so thankful for my parents bc they understand & they love us for who we are & what we want to be!
Thank you darling your quote on my goal is to have a solid family touched me hugs, some people thinks work is only to just make the money for the family first, before they know it there kids are already grown up
My very first dream profession was to be a Nurse. I always look up and had a huge respect for them since I was inspired by a Nursing student neighbor and my aunt. More than a decade later, I am on the road to be a medical doctor.
Lola A Whole new playing field for us. Highschoolers get endorsements/pathways to follow in HS. So I picked Health Science Endorsement, and then specifically picked Sports Medicine to become an Athletic Trainer. Im a student trainer and its my goal now in life.
Lola A I’m a highschool student and my highschool is a technical highschool so it’s a highschool and college and in your sophomore year you choose which program you want to go into and your junior year you start working in it I make videos about it if you want to watch !!!
I wish my grandpa would see that being a doctor is not for me. And it’s normal for people to WANT to be a doctor. He always says your smarter enough to be a doctor, as if being a nurse is for dumb people. Plus he always goes, but doctors make so much more money. I’m not going in healthcare for the money! Ugh lol PREACH
I’m currently a communications major but want to return to nursing school. You help calm a lot of my fears and inspire me to pursue my dreams. Thank you ❣️
I absolutely love this ❤️❤️❤️ and I recently got accepted into nursing school, watching your videos encouraged me to not give up after having to retract my teas test thank u!!! 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for the video! It was true that going the Medical route took longer but I really think that is changing for the Nursing Profession. Now to become an Advanced Practice Nurse it requires a BSN, RN (4years of school), at least one-year of bedside training in that given specialty, and a DNP or Ph.d. (3-4 years of school) with board certification exams to practice. The average total is from 8-10 years of schooling and training or just as long as the Medical route! I think this is better for the Nursing Profession because it is requiring a higher level of educational attainment. You will be great!!!!
Everything you've stated was so true. They were all things that I've considered myself when deciding on which type of healthcare career I wanted to pursue. Everyone has different preferences and goals in life. We all couldn't live without nurses either!
I also wanted to become a paediatrician when I was younger but at age 11/12 I knew it wasn't for me because I knew it would be too much work and too many years in school. I went for nursing instead because I still wanted to care for sick people. For the summer I'm taking biochemistry which is somewhat like organic chemistry and I'm SO glad I didn't decide to become a doctor. That information is another language lol.
I’ve been struggling with becoming a nurse or doctor and this video was extremely helpful. My main girl is being able to be hands on sure patients and physically be with them a lot
yes girl! so tired of people underestimating nursing. it’s so annoying! my own college and career advisor in high school told me I was selling myself short because I said I wanted to be a pediatric nurse instead of a pediatrician. It took me forever to get over that. Girl, I wanted to be a pediatrician too!
For me it's like asking why didn't you study mechanical engineering instead of civil engineering, it's not nessesarily saying that one is better than the other, or believe nursing if a first step to become a doctor
For sure. My foster dad was a doctor with his own practice in a speciality. He will tell you he's still paying off loans.. he gets up at 5am and gets home at 7pm. He takes calls off of work as well. He has to keep up with studies once he gets home too. It's a lot!
This is funny to me because the reason why I’m choosing to become a doctor instead of a nurse is I’m terrible at people skills and small talk, And that’s like half of the job for nurses 💁🏽♀️
YES!! I think that’s one of the major differences honestly. Not all nurses are too dumb to be doctors and not all doctors are perceptive enough to be a nurse. I think it’s a difference in learning styles/personalities.
But that's essential for being a doctor! A doctor is not a computer, you'll learn more about the importance of communication since you haven't already.
Absolutely love your channel!! As an aspiring nurse at 16, though I am young, I have decided to pursue nursing rather than anything on a doctoral level. My main goal in life is to grow a family of my own and that is my first priority. Work and such come after the nurturing of my child(ren) and the support they need.
I'm going for my MD-PhD. I work as a MA during my gap year before med school. I also worked as a scribe in the hospital. I respect all nurses. So compassionate and patient even when the Dr is frustrated. Very helpful. Calming. You do alot. Amazing. Stronger relationships with patients.
I'm going into my senior year of high school and as of about a month ago I decided to become a crna. At first I was like I want to be a pediatrician, then it changed to orthopedic surgeon but after realizing the amount of time and the amount of debt it'll take I decided against it
Briana Hanks Same with CRNA, CRNA school is just as expensive as Medical School if not more. And takes longer, you need to get your RN, then work in the ICU for a few years then apply for CRNA school and do that for 3 years
femalesneakercollector CRNA school is not as expensive as medical school. At least for in state tuition. The school I want to attend is 60,000 for the entire length of the program. To get your bsn is 4 years at the school I want to attend and 1year of nursing practice and then 3 years to complete the crna program. When finished you can be 26. But another school I'm looking at requires you to get your rn(2yrs) and then you can go straight into their crna program(3 yrs) so roughly 23 years old and the cost of all that is about 60-80k for the all 5 years
I work in a OR and have many friends that are CRNAs, most of them did more than one year ICU,because the program schools look for that. Also you are in training for a while, half your first year your still in training, and at least where I work, their on probation. Maybe your state cheaper, but I live in NY and CRNA school is expensive, and their are medical schools that are cheaper. Also, life changes out of high school. SO MUCH. For some students they get to live the full college life, other students end up working full time and school time, you learn and grow with college, and not everything works out they way you wanted too. Shaowding can help you decide if you actually want to do it, some people become nurses or doctors step into the field/OR for the first time and realize its not for them. You see a lot, something never leave you, even shaowding/volunteering might make it seem cool and all, till you see your first code. Your young, not even in college yet, but what do I know
Briana Hanks i want to be surgeon like you but i feel if you really wanna do it i feel time and debt isnt an excuse i have three kids i think ir just a personal reason
I’m trying to decide between being a doctor and a nurse. Atm it’s easy to think that nursing is a better option because it requires less schooling, but if you think about it you’re going to end up working as a nurse for more than thirty years. A few extra years of schooling shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, not to mention in order to move up in the nursing field you’ll have to take more classes anyway. But the work/life balance of being a doctor is what sets me off. I have epilepsy so I’d like to be a neurologist but I’m not sure if it’ll fulfill my needs in life (socially).
I always try to remind myself that I can choose the kind of MD I want to be. Meaning I can be right their at bedside if I like, I can be as interactive or as distant as I choose based upon care given. I like that aspect of it. ❤️
People say it takes too long to get through medical school, but if you think about the different sections of nursing school that you'll need to complete prior to becoming a NP it is nearly even. For example, 2 years pre-nursing, 4 years BSN, most programs require 1-2 years working experience before NP school, then 3-5 years NP school depending on MSN or DNP. SO...essentially around 10-12 years after all is said and done!
Hi!! I really love your nursing videos and they are so helpful for me since I'm a pre-nursing student. I LOVE AND RELATE to this video LOL. I have two older uncles that are doctors and I constantly get compared to them and looked down on because I want to be a nurse. I concur about loving the nursing model more than the medical model. Nursing is such an amazing profession and I like that patient care and interaction, and really want to get to know my patients and getting to see how much you can impact a patient is so rewarding based on what ive seen volunteering in the ER. I know youre probably not going to read this but you motivate me to become a nurse with every video. Im applying to UNF and UCF nursing in a few months for Fall 2019, so figures crossed! You go Alexis, continue to be a kick-ass ER nurse!
I agree, my boss use to ask me all the time why I don't go become a Dr. I feel nursing isn't just focusing on the the client's medical issue but the person as a whole.
I don't normally comment on RUclips videos, but you are without a doubt my favorite person on RUclips EVER. I am starting nursing school this Fall, and every time I watch one of your videos I am reassured that I can do this and it is the right career path for me. Thank you thank you THANK YOU! please keep making videos! I will forever be a subscriber. You are an inspiration to me!
Here's a comment I put. Hope it can help: Just to speak for the "doctors don't interact with their patients a ton" remark, my mom (a GP) and a good friend (plastic surgeon) are doctors and they interact with their patients a lot. Even outside of my clinic, my mom does a lot of community events and provides homework help and workshops/events for the kids. My surgeon friend gets a lot of gifts from her patients, too. My mom also never takes work home. I haven't seen her do that in over a year, and even then she chooses to bring it home so she has less work tomorrow. I know there're lots of doctors who don't interact so much, but as someone in med school, I wanted to push that idea. For example, Natalie Crawford, MD is an infertility physician, mom and is soo involved in her patients lives. Dr. Rupa Wong, an ophthalmologist in Honolulu-the same. She owns her own practice, too and spends a good amount of time with her kids. The psychosocial aspect, I loved that you spoke about that. It's so true in many ways, though I feel I know doctors who implement that as well and if they don't, they feel they've failed as doctors. I love nurses, have nurse friends and seriously give my heart to the ones who helped me when I was in Canada
I completely agree with you! RN here and this is indeed a very knowledgeable perspective to stand on. Thank you for sharing the love to nurses across the globe 🌍
I’m in high school and I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician for a long time but I recently wanted to change and be a pediatric nurse practitioner because of all the exact same reasons.I want to have a family and I don’t want to be pregnant while I’m still in school. Also it’s way too long.
I completely agree with your view. I'm also a nursing student and hearing this question is aggravating. I just use it as an opportunity to educate on the differences.
Your such an inspiration to me im trying to decide rather to be a crna or anesthesiologist and im quite an introvert so im not really a big social person so i think i would actually prefer being a doctor even though i still have to interact with them i love caring for people but i would rather do the unnoticed work and just feel good that i helped the patient but nurses are definitely a necessity in the process of caring for a patient i hate when people put them down as if they dont matter its just plain disrespect because yall save lives too
Thank you for this video! I feel like a lot of people neglect the whole work-life balance when judging others career choices..but it is so important! I'm going to school to become and optometrist and I just keep getting asked by people why not be another type of doctor that makes more..but being able to spend time with my future family and being there to raise them is priority #1 for me.
I'm going into my Junior year of high school and I'm currently, like, 90% sure that I want to do something related to the medical field. A lot of people in my family (especially my father's side) are actually doctors and nurses, so I feel that there's a sense of fulfilling a role, but it is something that I do really want to do, not just because of my family. I'm currently debating whether or not I should pursue the Doctor roll or the Nurse roll. I love the idea of both and I'm having trouble making a choice. I know that I shouldn't worry about it right at this moment because I still have two full years of high school to get through, but I've been thinking about what I want to do since I was 12 years old. I love the biology side of being a doctor, anatomy and physiology are something that I've always loved and I'm not really squeamish when it comes to most things (besides snot, that can make me throw-up lol). I love nursing because I would like to care for the patient more, which is something I wouldn't be really able to do as much as a doctor. The idea of 10+ years at least to become a doctor kinda' scares me and the idea of having to cram, like, 24/7 is something a little stressful, though I would love to do something like Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, etc. I hope that I would be able to make a choice at some point in the next two years though lol.
Hii!! I’m going through the same thing as a junior in highschool. I see you made this comment 3 years ago, and I’m just curious on what you ended up choosing?
ahhh i love my boo❤️ i’ve been subscribed since forever and i can’t believe how far you’ve gotten! i’m only 13 and i’m so exited to become a nurse! i’m volunteering at a hospital this summer to see what it’s like :))
Naomi 777 how did you get this opportunity? I want to be a nurse too and I’m going to be working at the hospital starting the beginning of July, I think I’m going to be in the ER and I’m so excited!
Thank you so much for clearing up my confusion. I was torn between proceeding to medicine after medtech as my premed or studying nursing all the way but my dream has always been to make a happy cohesive family. I was afraid being a doctor would take too much of my time at home but i still really admired the profession. Now that you mentioned about your primary goal is to be a mother and have a solid family, my priorities are now set and im reminded of my dream. Thank you
Great video! I’m always so surprised how many people think that becoming a nurse is the first step to becoming a doctor. They are COMPLETELY different and both very valuable careers. Thank you for all your hard work in nursing! 🙏🏻
I thought about being a doctor many times in my life, and my mom keeps asking why I don’t want to be a doctor instead, she thinks I’m settling for second best I guess, but I’m already getting burnt out with school as it is, it takes at least 8 or medical school and then like 4 years of residency to become a doctor. That’s just too much for me.
I think it’s a sticky subject to even try to compare. I also agree that it’s rude when people ask why you didn’t become a doctor. We both ultimately work close with the same goal of treating the patient. I don’t think nurses and doctors are in the same level, though we both play a very crucial part in delivering care. We deliver it and they diagnose/ plan. With nurses being at the bedside much more (true for hospital setting) we require knowledge of how the body works and how the medications also work. We assess the patients, get to know them, and are a bridge to relating necessary information to help the patient reach milestones to health. We can’t do what we do without each other. The education is different. The job responsibility is different. I just enjoy being at the bedside, watching people heal, listening to their needs, and learning. Kuddos to those who have dedicated so much years of training and missing out family function to take care of many Ill patients. We see you and appreciate you. Sincerely a nurse.
I hear ya! That is a really rude question that some people ask. It implies somehow being a nurse isn't as important as being a Dr. I usually try to educate people that it is a totally separate career. That Dr's deal with the disease process and nurses deal with the pts response to the disease process
The worst part for me is that they think when you pursue to be a nurse, you're not smart enough or that you have bad grades before deciding to join the nursing course. I think being a nurse is important because we care and nurse the patients therefore nurses are extremely important. I am so glad I found your channel before going for my courses. I LOVE your channel. Thank you
Does being a nurse kill your feet? I just got my first job at a grocery store & it kinda discouraged me because if I can’t walk around a grocery store without my feet killing me, how am I going to work in a hospital?? 😩
I worked at a grocery store back in high school and it's just something your body has to adjust to! I'm now working as an aide working my way up to nursing and having proper shoes has made a WORLD of difference.
I have also been asked the same question myself. I just happen to prefer the field of Nursing to being a doctor because I am not interest in all of the responsibilities associated with being a doctor. Plus it takes too long to be a doctor like you said. So much of your reasoning also resonates with my thought process on why I chose the career choice of Nursing.
I rarely comment on videos, but your sentiments are literally word for word my own LOL. Thank you for posting this; it's good to hear that I'm not alone in that way of thinking (family over work=100% of the time).
Both are amazing, incredible careers! However, you can still start a family, travel and live your life even through medical school/residency/fellowship. Plus, not all doctor's take their work home aside from being on call once or twice a week (Like pediatricians). The work you have to do at home for being a teacher for example is a lot more than for a pediatrician.
Honestly and correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like from your responses to you nursing was the easier route. You didn’t want to stay in school as long, you didn’t want to work with cadavers and you didn’t want to take your work home with you. So you chose nursing by default? I don’t say this to be rude because I am currently at a loss between going to medical school or getting my masters in nursing and I really want to know beyond the scope of school and workload what made you chose nursing. Because unless you plan to stay stagnate as a nurse and just stay an RN you end up doing just as much schooling and work as a doctor does in the end if you become an advanced practicing nurse or even a nurse practitioner.
Hey Kara! I'm not sure if you will see this, but I'm a new nursing student in Brazil. I'm currently undergoing my first semester of nurse technician school (it's very different from what you guys have in the US, almost like the RN program - 2 years and 6 months is study, 400 hours of clinicals.) and for years, I thought I wanted to be a doctor. I love the science and the knowledge - but one day I realised I loved the patients more. The human interaction is key to me. So I switched all my plans. In Brazil nursing degrees don't come easy - 5 years for a bachelor, 2 to 3 years for a post grad, plus masters and Phd. This not including the nurse technician school I'm undergoing right now. All of this amounts to a decade of study, just like what a medical student needs. My goal is to stop when I get comfortable- knowing myself, that means I'll study for over a decade. I'll go that route because I want to be damn good at what I do, not because it's easier. Damn, in my case, easy would be going for a history degree, something I absolutely love and have no difficulties at. In nursing I'll have to deal with chemistry and that scares me, but then again, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I also don't like this video - it's pretty much about what she didn't want to do, and honestly nursing is so much more than that... maybe this wasn't a good day for her!
@@betinajuchemclemens7119 Hope the studying is going well, but a nursing program (although incredibly difficult!) is definitely not the same as what a medical student has to go through. Let us give credit where credit is due. Contrary to your comment people do become doctors because they love having patient interactions and the gratification that it brings.
I always knew nursing was for me, but I can’t stand other people who only choose nursing because it’s “easier.” Nursing school is not easy, and one of the many reasons people drop out is because they underestimate the workload
@@noface3928 Just because something is easier doesn't make it not difficult. It's easier to become a rocket scientist than an astronaut, but that doesn't mean it isn't difficult to become a rocket scientist. I would assume that most people who want to go to medical school but aren't competitive enough end up going the PA/NP route. Maybe more often the PA route.
I chose nursing school instead of medical school because I have a friend who was a pre-med major, and she applied to 20 medical schools, got an interview for one, then got rejected from that one. It’s extremely competitive and I didn’t want to put in all that work to come out with nothing. Another main reason is there’s a lot more career advancement in nursing.
Well, my mother is a nurse and I can tell that before I was born, when she already had my sister, my mother worked a lot, she did many night shifts and even now, after so many years, she does bring work home. My cousin is in med school (the last years) and I can vouche that she will have time for her family, since that is also one of her main goals in life. What I think is that the concepts of doctor and nurse are different but connected, and the most important, is that they can be somewhat different depending on the country. I'm from Portugal, and here, doctors have a pretty good life (not saying that they don't work hard, just that it is more flexible), having time for their work and family. But in the end, as I said, it depends on the country, and if you're happy about your choice that is all that matters.
I relate to this so much, I'm a freshman in college and I want to change to become a nurse practitioner, obgyn was my dream but I'd do something in the nursing field related to that. I freaking live your Chanel and relate to so many things especially the family aspect and not working 24/7, thanks so much
Although I am only 12, I have always wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 2. But for a while now I been aspiring to be a hart surgeon. I also would want to specialize in lungs or brain surgery as well as hart surgery. I know it’s a high paying job, and that’s great but I feel without loving what you do the money isn’t worth it. I plan to have a small and cute apartment until I have payed at least three quarters of my debt off and I am going steady with my job. I know I will run into something that it hard to swallow, like a death but I will also be able to save many others. I feel this will be a fun experience for me, and I know I sure do have a long road of schooling ahead of me but in my opinion I fell it will be worth it to me. This year for a school trip I hope to go to Harvard University, and get to learn somethings about medical school and maybe get some tips on what to expect. (Harvard University is the school I dream of going to). I know this was long but thank you to everyone who took time to read it🙂 Wish me luck on my road to becoming a hart surgeon.!!
I’m applying to unis now and ig I’ve always felt like i wanted to be a doctor but the more i look into it and the time it takes and the effort it discourages me but your video literally put everything in perspective to me its like you were saying whats in my mind that i was afraid to say because people including my family think being a nurse is less than a doctor so i just wanted to say thank you very much
I am really grateful for this video. I have been torturing myself wondering if becoming an RN was the path for me. I love children and really like making people happy and smile. I have been told so many negatives that I almost wanted to give up. But hearing this information from someone who also loves kids and wants to have a family solidified my decision.
I really dislike when someone tells me, "why did you become JUST a nurse", I don't think they realize all the hard work, sacrifice, and effort it takes to become & actually be a nurse. What would you respond to someone who asks that question???
Leena A. Thank you so much !
Oh thank you so much for saying nurses are vital.I feel like that's what I hate about nursing and the only thing I hate. Is when people or doctors think nurses are less then doctors. I come from a family of all doctors and engineers and everyone all ways asks me why I didn't become a doctor.
Thenu De Alwis awe no problem, I hate that stigma!!
i chose to wanting to be a Nurse instead of a doctor because i want to live and start my life earlier. some people may say it sounds crazy but i’m being 100%! doctors need 12 years of school and nurses need 4 and years of training. the second reason is because i feel like nurses are closer to their patients than doctors and i love it💓 i would love to be a NICU nurse...
Tiara yes girl I feel this whole post 100%
I agree completely
I agree
Frandia Blaise what type of nurse ?
Did seeing the nurse more help the lupus flare get better
@@fatimabagayan8756 at first a peds nurse but I’ve grown to love working with geriatrics in the ICU
Clodia Frazil I didn’t say I was annoyed. I just simply stated that both medical paths are different.
Same! I appalled nurses hut I couldn't do it. Too much people interaction. I'm moving towards research physician now tho!
CNA's run them. We know the patient better than anyone there.
Nope, unfortunately the admins run the hospital
@@joko3382 lol true
This is so true
My dad is a doctor and when ever he comes home he has to write all these reports about the patients and he continuously gets Phone calls from the hospital and he has to answer them.
Work is work, it’s not my life 🤷🏼♀️
Doctors take home their work?
Cute Panda yes many doctors work from home remotely, being on call, taking calls from nurses and other hospital personnel. I’m sure they are able to check up on their patients from home. Some less than others. But hospitalists and internists stay busy, I’m sure, because they oversee so many patients and they’re ultimately the decision makers, they’re responsible for putting in orders. As a nurse I only take care of these patients for the duration of my shift. Once I’m home the patient is no longer my responsibility.
Most doctors have to finish charting at home, which takes HOURS. And then like she mentioned they are on call. its like your never off the clock.
BKFutureNP yeah. Calls at home? No thank you 😅😅
doctors with their own practice definitely take their work home
Then they pray for you and say "God will promote you to be a doctor very soon"
I just die
Adeyinka Adeshina please tell them, the questions are overwhelming
Hahahahaha
This is officialy my favorite comment on the internet.
Turn it around and ask them why 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 didn't choose to even set foot in the medical field. Then see what they say lol.
Same here in Slovakia, i hate these stupid questions 😑
Amanda Lynn yesssss relatable
Amanda Lynn yesss
Me too!!
Psychiatrist interact with their patients often though, so your point is invalid.
Lol good luck to both of us in our journey.
hey girl, Is it easy to switch majors like you did in college or what is the process of switching majors?
Great video! I really enjoyed hearing a different perspective around what it means to care for patients in the hospital! Thanks for sharing!
Ahhh I love your channel!

It's a stretch, to say the least, to compare a nurse to a doctor.
Diana D why you keep saying this?
You’re awesome thanks for supporting nurses!
@Bryan W Medicine. I’m almost in medical school. :)
@@juliettexo5013 ahhh girl so happy for you, I'm sure you'll do great. What specialty are you going for?
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK! i'm in nursing school right now and i can't believe how many people have asked me "why i didn't go all the way?" already. So many people underestimate what nurses do but the psychosocial aspect is just as important as the more biomedical stuff that doctors do.

I wanna be a nurse, but I have a long way to go, I’m only 11. :/
Wow you're ahead of the game by watching nursing videos. Enjoy your present moment because before you know it you'll be applying for college.

For us guys, that question is asked 10x more, here's what I say to people:
Life is like a Box of chocolates. There's so many different choices. I just chose one that suited all my needs. And I like it, it was a super tasty choice 😁
I hate when I get asked that.
Ask me why I became a nurse, I will tell you why bahahaha"
🤘😁🤘
I’ll be starting my nursing journey this fall but will be applying to medical school once I have my BSN. Obgyn doctor is the goal.
OMG that is awesome. I start my nursing journey this fall too! I'm nervous and excited at the same time.
How’s it going?
YESSSSSS I’m currently doing the same
So funny that you say your primary goal in life is to have a family. I just passed my NCLEX (yay!) And am working as a new nurse and I am so excited about where this career can take me.. but my number one goal in life is to be a good mom! I'm working hard to build a solid financial foundation so I can have kids and show them what it's like to work hard and be successful!
Anna Handy mom life 😂😂😂
Agree with you, I'm a Doctor and we have worst social life, I take my work home all the time and I barely ever get to spend any time with my family. I have a lot of respect for Nurses, I admire their handwork, dedication and compassion towards the care of patients.
In my A&P class on my nursing track we got to work with human cadavers and it was a great experience. Disgusting at the time but glad I did it.

Well let's just say perspective changes and then now I'm an in coming senior high student. I don't see myself taking other courses besides STEM though I got other dream jobs in mind I don't see them as options in the mean time for some reason.
I'm only in 8th grade but I've wanted to be an ER nurse since kindergarten.

I don't think it's rude, I think it's simply just curiosity, I've asked that before and also I've been asked that as Well, it's all good.
Kayla Elaine you’re honestly probably too dumb
+A Godbole Rude.
Kayla different people are good at different things lol
Briana Hanks Hey, so that second school you mentioned didn't require any experience?
I’m trying to decide between being a doctor and a nurse. Atm it’s easy to think that nursing is a better option because it requires less schooling, but if you think about it you’re going to end up working as a nurse for more than thirty years. A few extra years of schooling shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, not to mention in order to move up in the nursing field you’ll have to take more classes anyway. But the work/life balance of being a doctor is what sets me off. I have epilepsy so I’d like to be a neurologist but I’m not sure if it’ll fulfill my needs in life (socially).
I considered going to medical school after becoming an RN but ended up becoming a nurse practitioner and very happy with that choice.
I always try to remind myself that I can choose the kind of MD I want to be. Meaning I can be right their at bedside if I like, I can be as interactive or as distant as I choose based upon care given. I like that aspect of it. ❤️
You sound just like me. I recently switched my career choice to nursing from wanting to be a doctor
PS Now I know what to tell people who ask "why don't you want to be a doctor instead?" LOL
You are an inspiration to me!
the steph awww thank you this is so sweet ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Loved your reasons! I'm currently having this battle of going to nursing school or medical school & this helped💕
Terea Marie me too 👏🏾👏🏾
Here's a comment I put.
I'm going to school to become and optometrist and I just keep getting asked by people why not be another type of doctor that makes more..but being able to spend time with my future family and being there to raise them is priority #1 for me.
for me Being a nurse is like a blessing.... I’m not yet but i loved nurses so much....💕💜
I'm going into my Junior year of high school and I'm currently, like, 90% sure that I want to do something related to the medical field.
@aidansheadache2142 Hi! Since it's been years what'd you end up doing?
Even as a student I’m pretty sure us nursing students get that as well ughh such a pet peeve😂😅✋🏽 like stop
haters gonna hate
ahhh i love my boo❤️ i’ve been subscribed since forever and i can’t believe how far you’ve gotten! i’m only 13 and i’m so exited to become a nurse! i’m volunteering at a hospital this summer to see what it’s like :))
Naomi 777 how did you get this opportunity? I want to be a nurse too and I’m going to be working at the hospital starting the beginning of July, I think I’m going to be in the ER and I’m so excited!
Jose Garcia there’s a hospital volunteering program that i signed up for.
Thank you
I get that question all the time 😫 like gee let me live! I don’t want to be a doctor
We dissect cadavers in nursing school, so it really depends on the University.
Thank you
I loved this video. I’m a current nursing major and I’ve been wanting someone to get real advice and insight from.
I want to be a pediatrician but I don’t know at this point😭it’s just ugh Idk what to do
Saammee
This is a debate I'm having now (nurse or doctor) so thank you so much for posting this it helps so much ❤
Can’t compare the two?? Doctors are more trained and qualified!! Nurses are very essential too!
Does being a nurse kill your feet? I just got my first job at a grocery store & it kinda discouraged me because if I can’t walk around a grocery store without my feet killing me, how am I going to work in a hospital?? 😩
Princess West you gone get use to it as u work more shifts
Girl that's how I was when I started my first job, my feet & back would hurt so much😩 but I soon got use to it after 1 month
You need comfortable shoes.
I worked at a grocery store back in high school and it's just something your body has to adjust to! I'm now working as an aide working my way up to nursing and having proper shoes has made a WORLD of difference.
Princess West a good pair of shoes go a long way my feet haven’t hurt in a while
I have also been asked the same question myself. I just happen to prefer the field of Nursing to being a doctor because I am not interest in all of the responsibilities associated with being a doctor. Plus it takes too long to be a doctor like you said. So much of your reasoning also resonates with my thought process on why I chose the career choice of Nursing.
I want to be a doctor but i think it was too hard for me to handle and now i think i would study nursing in college
hey two years passed. what did you do
I rarely comment on videos, but your sentiments are literally word for word my own LOL. Thank you for posting this; it's good to hear that I'm not alone in that way of thinking (family over work=100% of the time).
I 100% agree with you, with these reasons too is why I'm going for nursing instead of doctor path
Lol I just think you don’t have the qualifications. Don’t act like you can easily become a doctor. That being said nursing is very awesome too!!
I LOVE that your number one goal is to be a mother and have a family! Any time I say that, I get judged so thank you for that !
100k on the way
100 k but no time to spend it
100 k is not alot of money for all those years. U can get a bachelors in economics and make over 200,000 a year
lol I think they meant 100K subs@@candyjones4841
Your videos have helped me so much and I’ve been here since 20k and can’t wait until you reach 100k ahhh I’m so excited for you 😭❤️
Ula Kalicinska Yass Nurse fam 4life ♥️
I’m applying to unis now and ig I’ve always felt like i wanted to be a doctor but the more i look into it and the time it takes and the effort it discourages me but your video literally put everything in perspective to me its like you were saying whats in my mind that i was afraid to say because people including my family think being a nurse is less than a doctor so i just wanted to say thank you very much
I am really grateful for this video.
Well becoming a nurse is way easier than going 12+ years for a doctor.
Thank god i found your channel😍 ive been so confused on which path to choose for some time, but ive been leaning towards nursing aswell❤️
I’m in 10th grade and I know I want to be an icu nurse and this semester I’m gonna be taking college courses☺️I’m so excited!!
its. babyd GOOD LUCK 💙 !
You will do great! I did post secondary as well, during my senior year of high school, and it was the best decision of my life.
Honestly my coworkers used to ask me that all the time and I used to get so annoyedddddd
Inspite of the negative vds about Nurses you have truly inspire me to be a Registered Nurse. Thank you.
