Does Scaling Down CATCH YOU MORE FISH?
For this latest episode we headed to Reepham Fisheries, with another experiment in our sights (if you follow our channel you know we love experimenting!) and that was does scaling down your tackle actually catch you more fish?
It's a general opinion that scaling down your rig line and hook size, especially in the winter, can bring you more bites and more fish. That isn't something we disagree with either, but it got us thinking... how much of a difference does it actually make? We decided to try a little experiment.
The plan was to fish neatly and scaled down for 2 hours, to see what we could catch and then fish scaled up and heavy for 2 hours and then compare the weights caught.
To find out a exactly how we got on, watch the latest episode from the waters edge…
As usual we hope you enjoy it and any feedback is always much appreciated.

As light as you think is appropriate. Check.
Great video as always. What you said at the end made perfect sense. I feel middle ground is the way u want it like finesse stiyile but a man enough hook length ect to land the fish. Awesome video!!! Tight lines lads take care 🎣🎣🎣
Great Respect Guys for fishing in those conditions! You look so cold, doesn't your Matrix Uniform include Long Johns? These days I don't fish in temperatures less than 12⁰, you will understand as you get older! 🤣
I fish the clear water of the great lakes in Canada. I have found only a few bio physical influences that affects catch rates. Hookbaits water colour and water temp are a few. here there is a ton of angling pressure and have found angling pressure is the predominate influence of scaling down. Like most top UK anglers going as heavy as possible and fishing positively is the best answer always on natural venues. Great subject that influenced how we rig up. Thanks for the vid.
Not really a fair test! I would have thought you should use rig’s alternatively over the whole time noting the time it takes to catch on each rig
Surely it depends on species and venue... I'm going fishing on a large wild open water here in Ireland & fishing like I do in summer... to me, the bait is more important... I generally use wide-gape specialist hooks which are light ... & 4 -6lbs fluoro ... if they're a bitin, I'll be a catchin... 😎👍☘️🍺
Fishing is not all about catching.
It definitely gets you more bites but can you land them ? There is a balance to be struck between finesse and durability getting it right is partly experience and partly trial and error
bet it don't make a difference, i use 8 lb main line and 6lb hook length all year round ???🤔
I think going small is always an advantage with carp.
Hi lads, was just wondering are you both still on bawburgh?
very nicely filmed again boy's, would it of made a difference if you started the other way round,🤔
Do you think having built your swim for an hour, then stopping to get the boat out, with the delay in feeding, will have affected the second weight?
You set out one saying the test is to compare lines and hook combos, but this test is invalid for me due to bait variation. If you put 3 maggots on the first rig, would you have had as many bites? That variable means you haven't really answered the question you set out at the beginning.
I couldn't call it. Sometimes has helped... but not always 🤔
Salam hadir nyimak selalu😇
hmm.. I wish any of those tactics were legal around here.. hahaha
lighter lines and hooks will catch more
i think you get more bites while scaling down
