- Quite a drive ahead of me today, but I am going to try out a BMW 330e. I'm not normally a fan of plugin hybrids, but maybe this one will be different. Oh and I found out why my home made folding longboard was rattling so much (and it's not what you think).

I think 99% of your stories start with "I'm seriously late today" lol :D
Only 99%? I must try harder ;-)
Your enthusiasm is infectious. Thanks for brightening my day, James.
car sounds nice. seems cool.
your vlogs keeps improving keep it up :)
Thanks, I try my best.
we have a bmw 330e chiptuned and its very quick it goes in 5 sec to 60mph and like 250 kmph topspeed
i think i may have the exact same hoodie as yours, i even took off the metallic pieces at the end of the laces!
I hope BMW sees this video. So their 3 Series customer wants a good looking, high mileage BEV after lease end and will seriously consider Model 3. Writing is on the wall for gas cars⚡
at least model 3 not yet available. and there are still 500000 model 3 they need to produce, so it could be available.
I think plugging in once a week saves me loads of time. Thirty seconds to plug in compared with stopping at a petrol station / paying etc. I can see the 330e as a stepping stone for a lot of people to get used to the idea of an EV and interesting to see that even with less than 20 miles electric range he was hardly ever using the ICE, nice of him to let you have a go too. I struggle with the idea of carrying an extra engine around with me plus servicing requirements though. How much energy as a percentage does truck surfing save you?
5:00 minutes in, James demonstrates how driving a Tesla for years has made getting a "regular" car in gear a difficult thing to recall.
Proper handbrake! Nice :)
Upgrade your green rating by using a reusable travel coffee cup.
I usually do, but this time I had water in my reusable cup.
Do you have problems with charging time allowed if no one using other chargers or is that standard across all superchargers world wide ?
That would be a great option if it managed 50 Miles on Electric. Don't get me wrong I normally do six-ten miles so it would fit me but the added expense for 15 miles. I see they are doing something very similar with the new Mini Countryman E that I'm sure they said did 25 miles on full EV mode per charge.
We live in Michigan U.S.A and we have a Tesla model x and it will go on long road trips very good
Hi James, loving the vlog. if you ever wanted to do a piece on the VW Passat Estate GTE, just let me know, as I took delivery of mine a couple of weeks back. keep up the fantastic work.
Also, have you considered doing something on Gtech products. their HQ is worth a visit. lots of battery toys.
On the Tesla HW2 cars and 360 view: no cameras in front (front bumper), so, hard to do real 360. I'd love it also!
Good point
nice vid, speaking as someone who also drives a 330e :) only small point is it's not a twin turbo, just a single turbo 2.0 - but that's just me being retentive!
Thanks for the correction.
Maybe he meant twinscroll single turbo. Or twinscroll is only for straight 6?
Arnis Tarassu think you might be right there - BMW seem to use "twinpower turbo" to mean twin scroll, seems to carry over to the Mini power plants too. Very misleading!
Ben Haskell Therefore well marketed. Most people get an impression of two ultra cool turbos. But they get one. Though that one does a job of one and a half due to being twinscroll. And more reliable as there is actually one turbine. Win-Win :)
so did you like the beemer ? haha daft question ... i mean obv you liked it, but i was expecting a conclusion..
What do you think of the Jaguar I Pace EV that is going to launch late 2017 early 2018?
Sounds really good to me (probably not cheap though).
0:35 James love that mate. More vloggers need to do 2 point perspective, I dunno why but I find it interesting, hope you continue
Lol, never mind it was different time recorded and sped up lol
You noticed!
I like the perspective too though, might make more use of it the future.
James Cooke RUclipsr will understand other RUclipsrs lol. I feel honoured for saying that :P
Shame you couldn't pop to see my 30kw Leaf in Hull whilst you were nearby!
The Tesla self driving cameras probably do not have the same resolution a normal camera does so I doubt will have the 360 view with the current hardware (HW2).
They weren't exactly what I would call good quality camera on the 330e either, but the system worked (it is parking close to curbs that I'd find them most useful).
Hi James I had problems at the Grantham Chademo on 29-3-17, did you notice the Tesla Hardware in the main car park just opposite the Days inn hotel? Regards David
I didn't notice the "Tesla hardware". Don't tell me your CHAdeMO adaptor got stuck on the charger (that's my nightmare scenario).
No, not stuck but would only charge for 15 minutes before disconnecting. This Grantham site has been a problem for at least 1 year. I did get a type 2 connector stuck in at Eastbourne ASDA and had to call polar service to release it. David
4:34 it annoys me so much that the engine is cold and has only run for 3sec before he gets on it and revs it up to 7k rpm. hate idiot drivers like this, poor guy that buys this after him
I loved watching your longboard build. Any plans to add a motor and batteries now? :) You can get motorised trucks, or complete kits if you need.
I would like to do a folding electric longboard, but I don't want to make it out of my existing longboard, because it works so well I wouldn't want to break it. Also I do quite like the exercise element of skating without power assistance.
Good points, it does look good, and I am very tempted to try a similar project myself. Not sure if I can resist the temptation of electrifying one though.
Nice meeting you at Woodall services james
Likewise.
To get your running in you might consider jogging at charging sites
10:12 Hi to you too, Mr. Random Cameo!
Re watched this James as I couldn't recall what your feedback was on the 330e. Had mine for just over a month now and whilst I do like the car it's far from the Tesla Model S that I crave!. Got this as a company vehicle for 4 yrs so I guess I'll have to be patient. The 330e is in my opinion made by BMW for the primary reason of winning over company car owners by offering a decent quality vehicle with plenty of power for a bargain tax rate (BIK) compared to your regular petrol or diesel only options. Secondary is the attempt to move people slowly into the premise of plugging in and driving on electric. In fairness that's what I was looking for when choosing this car. I want to get used to the charging and driving purely on electric but have the fallback of a conventional petrol engine - a semi-green stance.
I'm sure I'm not alone in finding my commute can't be done on pure electric alone (I get about 2/3rds of the way at best) and currently have no practical way to charge for the trip home. Sadly BMW haven't given the car sufficient real world range for my needs - 40-50 miles would have been fantastic. My other gripe is with the way companies, such as the one I work for, just don't get the logic of encouraging electric uptake. I get a fuel card that costs me £62/month in tax (this year at least) no matter how much fuel I stick in the car. You'd think they'd encourage you to charge by paying for a BMW charge now card, providing charging at work, subsidising the charge cable cost etc but sadly not. So I'm hearing of colleagues just sticking fuel in and letting the car charge the batteries- which will give less than 30mpg if driving sportily.
I've actually pointed all this out at work but it fell on deaf ears. I guess when everyone moves to a plug in hybrid and yet hammers their fuel card they might just realise what I was harping on about !.
Anyway rant over, keep up the great work James and I'll hopefully join the Tesla ranks in just under 4 years ! (Yep a painful wait!).
Hey very nice naturally presented review, 330e is way to go, I did a 330e review too - take a look ?!
I liked your video, very nice.
So just for the record, how long total time did you spend recharging on this trip?
Good question.
Stop 1 - 36 minutes (coffee, comfort break)
Stop 2 - 40 minutes (lunch, quick bit of editing, chatting to Glynn)
Stop 3 - 30 minutes (Longboard ride, tightening trucks, testing them out)
It should be noted that I could have just used the battery more deeply (I never went below 28% and I got home with 45% SOC) and the charge time would more or less half. Plus I needed to get lunch anyway (and do the editing too).
does anyone know the episode and the season of the Nissan leaf and imiev top gear video?
Season 12 Episode 7
Oops, no it wasn't s12e7 (that's the Tesla Roadster episode), it was season 17 episode 6.
I wouldn't trust James on this....this is the second VLOG 297! His previous one was 297 too :)
Clarkson drove up and down the Lincoln bypass, to make sure that his car battery was flat, then stopped at the most awkward spot possible, having passed a charging point 300 metres earlier. Wish we'd known you were passing through Lincolnshire; we'd have said hello!
James, does your Model S have traffic aware cruise control? Or something similar?
It only has a traffic aware driver ;-)
(My car is pre autopilot hardware, so no TACC either unfortunately)
TACC has been around since the 90's. It just didn't use the cameras like Tesla does. It was either lidar or radar. Still would've been nice to have it in your Tesla... heck you may have it and just didn't know.
I'm anxious to see the Tesla pickup truck, or any full battery-electric pickup, but I think it will be a while. If they use 600 watt/mile they will need the 300-400 kw (ultimately much higher) quick chargers, and a battery pack that can charge at that rate.
The big challenge is being able to charge fast enough that they can take a nap at a rest stop and wake up 80% charged 45 minutes later. Some of these trucks towing a trailer will use 1000 watts per mile and need to charge 3-4x faster than a model S to have the same wait times at each charging station.
I also want to see some more EV hotrods, where they take a P100D drivetrain and put it in a Fiat 500e. LOL
Good to see you in NE Lincs, James, think I saw you on Weelsby Rd. I'm not a fan of hybrids with their short electric only ranges. I think they will be looked upon as a very temporary compromise of their time in just a few years from now. The new Leaf (with probably a 60kwh battery) and Tesla Model 3 will really shake things up and begin to make hybrids look a little silly, imho.
Small World :)
i test drove the tesla p100d luda, great car great handling but i prefer my bmw
4:24, turn the engine on, floor it to red line, while it's still cold 🥴
Do you have the 20kW on-board charger in your Tesla?
If so, you should upgrade your EVSE to an 80A one, which would fully charger your Tesla in 4 hours.
It does indeed have the 20kW on-board charger, though 7kW charging at home seems plenty to me. When I charged at 2kW at home, there were times I had to leave with less range than I'd like, but that hasn't happened since I got the 7kW charger.
I wonder, do homes in the UK get 3 phase electricity?
In my country(USA), homes only get single-phase.
They can, but most don't, unlike the rest of Europe.
Pip is great, James, is that a lot more work editing?
Not particularly, just more footage to deal with I guess and a bit more rendering effort from the laptop.
Who was the cameo that flashed by? Anyone I should know?
I doubt it, but I told him I'd include it in the vlog, so I did.
What was the result of Soph's testdrive in the Model X? Has she ordered it yet?
She loves it and wants one, but thinks it may be better to wait until next year and get CPO Model X.
CPO = certified pre owned?
Can you make videos where you travel to other countries?
Hopefully soon ;-)
what camera are you using?
Big camera is a Canon 70D (used during the drive in the 330e) and most of the rest of the shots were from a Canon G7X Mark 1.
Im From Lincoln :D
Wonder how much the BMW is ?
The 330E starts at £34,475, but you get the grant too.
Was that Gonerby Moor services?
No it was Granthom (unless you are talking about the supercharger stop, in which case it was Woodall south.
Yes Grantham A1 services... aka Gonerby Moor. I ran out of electricity 1 mile from there at the brow of a hill. 20 meters further and I could have coasted there (A52 through Grantham).
BTW - Tesla have applied to install some Superchargers at that location - it's still in the planning stage with permissions pending!
Love the BMW 330e, Would like to see it in the future with a large battery and no engine.
So would I, then again, with a 60kW battery wouldn't it be a very similar size and class of vehicle to the Model 3.
What's that noise...?
The sound of recycled dinosaur food.
The way he sits at the wheel or should I say on it. In a front on crash, the airbag will crush his chest and force his hands into his head. Something that's meant to save his life, will probably end it!
16miles is not much on electric.
4:34 So bad with an cold engine! Poor engine!
Hey JC, did you see the article about Tesla and their use of data in the Guardian today? Good subject for a chat. www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/apr/03/the-customer-is-always-wrong-tesla-lets-out-self-driving-car-data-when-it-suits
You know, everytime you do one of these I'm never sure if you're making fun of the owner or the car or what. 20 miles, OMG. Compromise for sure. This car looks pretty good but egads..range! Sport mode? What's that? And all the fiddling you need to do. My gosh.
am wondering why you are always running late...
sure does irate media can tell you
Probably trying to cram too much into the day (this time I had 2.5 hours of editing to do, before I could set off).
You hit the nail on the head about giving the man a pound for standing there for a minute. This drives me nuts : I tell ICE dirvers that soon there will be EV's and ultrafast charging stations that will allow you to drive for, say 200miles (realistically, and allowing buffers), and then charge for 15minutes, and drive another 200miles. Then the ICEer tells me that 15minutes is too long!?!? Realy? So you loose 10 minutes on a 400mile trip!!! 10 minutes ICEers then spend driving to work, so they can work another extra 30minutes to PAY for the fuel they fueled in 5minutes (5minutes they actualy had to spend standing next to their car, holding the fuel gun, breathing stinking gas fumes!!!). Honestly, the old arguments are dying. What keeps people hostile towards EVs is just good old fear of change itself... I bet if I add up the time ICEers spend at gas stations in a year, versus the time I spend at public charge stations, I win hands down. You see, 95% of the time I charge at night, when I'm asleep. I loose 0,0 minutes!
Also that was at work, where i was going to be there several hours anyway in a (partial) solar powered building
Well that's the beauty of an phev. Most of the time it's charge at home then on long journeys it takes mins to fill up. Ev are getting quicker to charge however they are expensive upfront cost to the every day man. Also, what happens when more people start driving evs? Are we going to see queues at charging points? Or how much would the infrastructure cost be? Not to mention the battery will not last forever, likely need to be replaced over a cars life. Where is that in the costings?
Not really a fan of BMW looks. Wish they made it with just a 60kwh battery. That would sort this chap out nicely.
Yeah if that was an option at the same price i would have gone for that. As James and myself said in the video should be alot more choice when i renew my car in 2.5 years
So if 330e had a 60kWh battery it would look better? I see....
330e is quoted 37 miles. I have had 39 miles from mine. I really wish people would fact check properly
Frankly I stopped watching top flop years ago .
Yep so did I, right around Season 12 Episode 7 I think it was (the one with the LEAF).
Doesn't these German cars make you realise how noisy a Tesla is inside?
Not if they have an engine that's for sure. Maybe more so at motorway cruising speeds though.
James Cooke Noise isn't just engine noise though but road and wind noise too. Also sometimes engines make very nice pleasing noises so not all engine noise is bad but all excessive wind and road noise is bad. I quite like the smooth soft muted sound of a V6 in a silent car (in terms of wind and road noise). That combination just sounds powerful and pleasing. I like silence but will miss the sound of good sounding engines. Electric cars should one day have the option to make such sounds.
My Tesla is very quiet. Check out www.auto-decibel-db.com
SDav21 make the sound with your mouth. Better affect.
Typical BMW driver, sits sooooooo close the wheel lol
Tesla looks like shit and the quality is even worser
This car and plugin hybrids in general are NOT green...they are the worst of both technologies. All they do is clog up the Public chargers for people with actual EVs.
Absurd! Over 90% of the miles on my PHEV are EV miles. If we could reduce overall gasoline consumption by 90% you would consider that a failure? Talk about making good the enemy of the perfect!
Oh, and I've never used a public charger in my life. That's not how PHEVs are supposed to be used. You charge them at home for EV use around town, and use the gasoline engine for longer trips.
