Here's Why the Base Model Toyota GR86 Is the One to Buy - 2022 GR86 Review

- It's not often that I recommend cars in their base form. Usually more is better, right? But in this case with the GR86, I think there is an argument to be made that the base version is the best one to buy. Follow along this episode as we dive into all the features of this car and then take it for a drive up the Angeles Crest highway.

Do you see the value in the base model or would you go straight to the premium?
I bought the base model BRZ. I didn’t care about the heated seats and didn’t want the sensors that come with blind spot monitoring. I wanted car and didn’t care about the rest. I kept the Primacy tires but also have Falken RT660s for autocross.
@@aroundomaha - and you have the lightest version. Exactly the one I want. Only thing I'll miss is the duckbill spoiler. I'll get over it.
@@mikea5205 If you can't live without it, 86speed sells color matched duckbills for $500
This car is about driving, handling, and not about bigger rims, ducktail or other gimmicks. Base mode lis always lighter which is what owner always crave for...lightness. Here is my suggestion Kurt -to make your review more professional - state the curb weight and also the mph/1000 rpm. Why is the last one important? Some readers or even potential buyers want to know when they cruise at say 70 mph, at what RPM the engine has to spin. I, for instance, do not want to cruise at 70 mph and the engine has to spin at say 3800rpm in top gear. The S2000 is an example of a highly tuned naturally aspirated power plant with short gearing which requires the engine to spin at high rpm at freeway speed.
I just want the duck bill and the headlights I could care less about the other stuff
Who else is searching gr86 vids every night lmfaooooo
I am. Damn it I want one so badly. 😩
@@GunZTube1 legit bro its so hard to cop one lmao every dealer keeps getting automatics :/
Damn I’m not the only one, I’m obsessed with this car
I'm in love with this car 😍
I ordered the GR86 in the base model. Also ordered it with a manual transmission. My first manual.
You made the right choice getting. A manual.
You won't regret it, well done from car people everywhere.
5k over msrp ?
I order a base model manual as well. I ordered it December, and they are telling me maybe I'll see in May?
Why is manual better than an automatic? Sorry, I am a newbie.
As far as I know, you're the first reviewer to mention the easy solution that makes the most sense overall: get the Premium trim package for all the extra features, swap out its stickier summer tires for the Base model's slipperier, slidier all-season Michelins, and hold on to the stock Pilot Sport 4's for track days. Every other reviewer who prefers the "more fun" Base model because of its less grippy tires failed to suggest this very obvious best-of-all-worlds solution. Seems like such a no-brainer, yet no one else ever mentioned it.
Good job!
Thank you!
Finally a trueno base model review! Picking mine up this week from March 7th-9th! Super excited.
Good choice!
This was the first video I have seen by ESD. What a refreshing experience. I feel the same way you do, I love less grippy tires cause sliding is fun. I agree completely that cars are simply too fast to have fun on public roads without endangering your license, or other drivers. Reviewers always recommend buying the most expensive model, you didn't and explained the differences. I look forward to viewing more of your reviews. Good job.
Thanks very much for the kind words Nor!
I really appreciated the bike test! Exactly what I was looking for.
Glad to hear it!
We need more of these videos man! Hope you are loving out in CA
Thanks brotha! Trying to get as many out as possible but it's hard when I still work full time. Appreciate you watching them!
Love the bike review. I own a 14 BRZ and it has no problem with a medium size 29er hard tail.
This was super helpful. I wouldnt put my moutian bikes in there cause I wouldnt want to get my car dirty but I like that it can fit my road bikes. I looked at one at a show room. was sure but after looking at yours Im sure mine will fit just fine. Thanks again.
Great review
Thank you!
Liked the bike fit test! Bummer it didn’t fit. Agree, slippery tires are more fun, and 17” tires give a lot taller sidewall, which means better cushion on USA’s roads and less worry about denting wheels in potholes. The non premium cloth seats are better than leather: warmer in the cold, cooler in the hot, and much better at keeping one from sliding in the seat when driving “enthusiastically”. Now that VW has gone insane with the mk8, the GR86 is now at the top of my list.
Glad you mentioned the turn stalk. I hated it when BMW moved to this type (I think they at some point went back) and will hate it on every car that has it.
The GR86 is a lot of fun - I will keep my 944 though 🥰
Nah, I wanted the heated seats, alcantara, adaptive headlights, ducktail & Matt black wheels & Pilot 4S tires. Worth every bit of the additional $ to me. So, I went for the Premium.
If you’re like me and would be doing bucket seats and custom wheels, probably not really worth it
agree, premium isn't that much more
Same, i went with a Red Limited version vs the base premium (for my Subaru) i think the higher end version for the GR86 is called premium . Its confusing lol
i got the premium and i agree it's worth it. the headlights and seats alone are worth the price to me. i drive it everyday so i don't want to swap a bucket seat that is going to kill my back after an hour or two and the headlights + sound system are worth the price easily.
@mysticstrider neither version comes with bucket seats. I was just talking about buying the cheaper version of the car and using that money for high quality aftermarket stuff. Aftermarket Bucket seats, nice JDM wheels, suspension etc.
I have the gt86 for 7 years and I drive my MTB with it. Remove both wheels and remove the pedals, this way the entire bike will lay flat and you will have plenty of room for other things. I use a quick release flat large area pedal, which is not available new anymore, what a shame. The 86 is a great usable car that is also very fun.
Btw I will also tie a strap between the trunk lock and the bike fork to prevent it from sliding while driving. It can be quite dangerous.
Looks great, base is the way to go...sounds great too!
Glad you did the bike test! This is exactly why I hate trunks. If tis car was a lift back, with the same proportions I think it would be perfect. I can fit my large frame mountain bike in my c6 corvette, It's a shame that a car meant to be a good only car is actually less useable. In general though, I'm just ecstatic that this car exists and that it is so well done!
Totally agree. I don't think any less of the car since this isn't what it was designed for. It drives so well I can get over everything else.
This is a big deal to me, I ride more than I drive. I mostly drive TO go ride. I need my MTB to fit inside. I don't want a rack (having had a bike stolen from a rack, in my "secure" work parking lot).
I already have a van. But it's a 12 MPG diesel...
Good choice doing a bike test; no one else bothered. However, it would’ve been even more helpful if you also showed a view from the front seat looking backwards with the bike in there so I could see how that would work. Thanks
My kid ordered a Truneo Blue GR86 Base. When it finally came in, it had the premium stereo (bigger screen) and a spoiler but everything else was base (17 inch tires, cloth seats, etc.)
Amazing review! I was considering getting the premium model basically solely because of the tires but your points really convinced me. Gonna save that money and just enjoy the car :) Plus, I don't really need heated seats at 21 years old ^^
Good choice!
im 21 and i just got the premium gr86 and honestly it was worth it. with the way things are right now you're spending $16 more a month if you finance or if you buy cash like i did you spending roughly 2500 for better wheels, tires, speakers, mats, and most importantly seats. it was worth it imo
@@garboi8976 fr I would usually go for the base model but this is one of those cars that it feels worth it to spend the extra 2500. the upgraded and heated seats as well as the speakers sell it for me. and no one really needs heated seats but believe me they are nice to have. if you were to add heated seats on your own it would be about $400 per seat and about $500 for the speakers = $1300. and thats if you install it all yourself. idk the exact cost for everything else but for the remaining $1200 you get better wheels, tires, and headlights. seems like a good package to me
oh and I forgot the duckbill spoiler which is $500 if you buy it aftermarket
@@garboi8976how much is the monthy payment on one of these? I'm planning on maybe leasing one after I get a job after college
Another thing for going with the non base model you get blind spot monitoring, really important safety feature due to blindspots and being a smaller car people don’t notice you as easy. Also, leather and Alcantara interior seats and accents on door panel and above the gauge cluster. For a 2k difference on a car purchase it’s pretty easy to go premium for that alone. Better wheels and tires, spoiler on gr86 and heated seats are all very nice. I personally have the premium on order with a manual that I’ll hopefully be getting in a few more months.
But the biggest point is the tires and I agree, the bad ones are more fun. So thank the lord that everyone mods these because I guarantee you you can get the base set of wheels and tires for dirt cheap with everyone putting custom wheels on ;) At the very least that’s what I’m going to do.
You ordered and they told you months? Im moving to la where i need a car. I want to get it in summer. Maybe i should order now
Great review, did you have trouble getting the road bike in with the seat post extended?
I probably would remove both wheels, but I am curious if I could fit it in without having to take off the seat post.
Waiting to see if Subaru and Toyota come out with the new version of the Performance Package for this generation. The uprated Brembo calipers alone were worth the cost of the upgrade and give a better braking baseline for upgrades for tracking the car.
Toyota seems to slightly improve their cars every year so I wouldn't be surprised. Although, the question is how long will it take?
LovE this new model 🤘🏻💯💥💥💥💥
I love my premium 2023. Base is nice if you plan on just going balls to the wall later on but for stock body oem+ styles I think the premium is perfect.
I haven't seen it mentioned about the stereo system in the base model vs premium. They only put one speaker in the dash speakers instead of two and they don't put the extra amp in the back. I bought a base AT due more to availability than preferability. I would have like premium but it was Neptune blue so I pounced. I'll buy and install the wing myself and I want it in black instead of blue so that worked out. The sound upgrade is going to stink and I think I like the cloth better than leather and alcantara just because of my location and lifestyle. The cloth seemed to come across as the sturdier of the two. The headlights and lane warnings are harder to get upgraded but also not impossible.
I'll be cross shopping this, a GR Corolla, or a Miata RF Club here in a little while.
One thing I really liked about the boxer engine in my old 2015 wrx was how smooth the engine reved….. is the engine in these cars that smooth?
If you've never had heated seats before, then don't spring for them now, because once you've tried them you don't go back.
You forgot to mention the premium has a JBL sound system and 8 speakers compared to 6 on the base
I think it looks good.
Plus, based on a few dyno tests here on RUclips, it seems this one might be a bit underrated from the factory. With estimations of closer to 240-245 actual flywheel Hp, based on drivetrain losses compared to previous models apparently, etc.
It certainly feels more than the ~25hp they are claiming on paper.
@@EatSleepDrive Torque band has also shifted about 2500rpms south, so that's going to emphasize that feeling as well.
Did you order yours at MSRP?
Excellent rationale. For me , I'm trying to go BRZ tech 6 speed (can't get one anywhere), because I want the blind spot monitoring , heated seats and slightly better stereo. Prefer the front looks of the GR86 but not a fan of the rear spoiler. I wonder what these rims weigh? If you put the $3000 into small mods and light forged wheels, I'd bet you would have the best car of all for fun and bumpy road corner dynamics.BTW, an Enkei RPF1 in a 17" weighs 15.2 pounds. You would be shaving probably 8 pounds per corner of unsprung weight. In a Miata ,wheel weight makes a HUGE difference in the way they drive. I'd also get a lithium battery, and get rid of the back seat and make a custom dog seating area. Ultimate car. You could probably drop 70 or so pounds with that setup.
Totally agree, weight is everything with these lower power cars.
i get mine in about 10-14 days. Waited little over a month but been in the FRS/BRZ/86 scene for the last 8-9 years. Couldn't be more hyped after having a first gen
How much and what was your financing package
No one cares clown
@@gustavopaulette3496 troll much?
Congrats!
How much did you end up spending?
You might be able to code the turn signal like bmw's to make the 3 signals 5 or 7
Great to see the bike test again Kurt! Its a big dilemna: How do you own a sports car if you're into mountain biking or cycling? Now was that a 29" wheel bike? Most mtb's are now 27.5" and the older ones are 26" wheel. I saw 'The Topher' get his 26" into the previous generation (GT86/BRZ) in an old review. I have heard people get them in through the passenger door as well somehow! The best alternative to this is a towbar mounted rack, BUT most affordable sports cars are not homologated to have a towbar fitted. (GT86/BRZ/MX5/Scirocco etc) So, if it doesn't go inside you're a bit stuffed.. Also, about the engine - the big complaint wih the previous gen was the mid-range (or lack of it) Has the mid-range power been significantly improved? Thanks in advance
I have the new BRZ and am a mountain biker. I ride a 29" size large enduro bike (Marin Alpine Trail XR - very big bike) and can fit it inside the BRZ. Both wheels have to be removed, frame goes in first, then I set the wheels on top of the frame. It's certainly not convenient or enjoyable to do, but I have a smile on my face driving to the trails, on the trails, and then again driving home. Love this car!
@@CobraKyle thats inspiring to hear! Do you go in through the side door? I love my Spesh 29er as well, but was considering an older 26" mtb which would fit easier into an '86 etc.
@@TRL2303 @Tim R Nope! I put it in through the trunk. I've found fork first works best with the drivetrain facing up. I have a blanket covering the trunk and the folded down seats which makes it a bit easier to slide in and out.
If you don't mind a little disassembly for your bike it's an amazing choice. If i would have taken one pedal off along with the front wheel, it would have fit. Also the torque dip from the previous gen is almost completely gone. This new engine is better in every way and it's not even close. This latest gen is special!
In general, you would be amazed at how many bikes you can fit into a trunk if you take both wheels off. I used to rent a lot of cars and have gotten 2 bikes and 4 wheels into some pretty average sized trunks. My "pro tip" here is to leave an old sheet/blanket/towel in the trunk so that the wheels don't rattle/scratch your bike frame during transport. I'm glad actual owners have commented here that have tested one bike in this particular trunk though!
Heated seat is a must for me in Scotland. There nae way I'm getting the vibes in my grandfather, bloody 1st prelude. If i wan tae, I can just hop on to his motor.
Fun fact: a bike can fit... if it folds! I have the Montague Paratrooper and it fits with plenty of room. Of course, I bought that bike specifically because I made sure it would fit when folded. Obviously not everyone can afford it, nor want to spend the extra dough just to fit in the trunk.
If you're going to start modding it the second you drive it off the lot, I don't see why you'd spend the extra on the premium trim - not that you'll spend any less in the long run, but that $3k you saved at the dealership can just go to mods of your choosing instead of some extras that you'll probably just take off. That said, I'm personally waiting until more parts hit the market before worrying about modding anything. There's some stuff from the previous gens that still fits, but most of the new gen stuff is being imported from Japan at a premium and I'm just not in a rush to pay extra for something that will be much cheaper once it's readily available in the states. Premium was the way to go for me, but it's not as if we're talking Supra 2.0 vs 3.0 where you're getting less of a car by going with the lower trim.
exactly. going with the base myself, just waiting on more to come in.
I'm just happy to see Toyota/Subaru making the decision to make a second generation of a car like this. Affordable enthusiast cars are harder to come by now. However, for $60-70K though (9 Min mark), I'm sure there are more pure sports cars than the BRZ/GR86. Still has a back seat :p
Boxster/Cayman is the only one I can think of. When you getting one of these???
@@EatSleepDrive the new z was announced with a 30k price tag which will be pretty good competition, I’m still going with the 86 though because I’ll boost is anyways and I prefer the look

I would love to test drive this GR86 but Automatic Premium edition. Unfortunately I can’t drive manual.
I’m also considering the BRZ 2022.
Try to learn manual, you will enjoy driving experience more. My wife learned how to drive manual and she loves manual much better now. It is not that hard to learn...
i thought i accidentally clicked on doug demaro by the intro haha
BMW's have the same turn signal system, if it's identical then you should be able to hit the same direction on the turn in order to turn it off, rather than going opposite and risking turning the signal on the other direction. Hope that helps someone!
BMW's implementation is wayyyyy better. The difference between the one touch lane change and full turn signal is much different in level of effort compared to the 86.
BMW used to have this system.... they removed it because people hated it.... then another company re-introduced it. Its amazing that such mistakes can be made. Hopefully you can put the superceded turn stalk in.
gonna wait for prices to drop a bit a snag one in a year, neptune blue premium package. Can't go wrong with better upholstery and a duckbill, plus no need to upgrade the rims/tires for a bit.
that Neptune Blue with some gold rims is sexy ass hell
No heated seats? My 2006 car has that
You could take the back wheel off of your bicycle and it'll fit. Great video keep it up.
Thank you!
how about ground clearance?
1:05 The way you say Trueno sounds more like Torino 😂😂
There’s no Apple CarPlay ?
I would use the saved 3 grand for a set of racing slicks.
And, with gas fast approaching 9 bucks, you want a fuel efficient sports car. Will the boot accommodate a couple of cases of wine plus luggage?
Does the base model have an automatic transmission?
The like was for the bike test.
The tires on the old one were just Crap ☺️ as soon as I put on new ones … car was lovely to drive.
Ok, but 86/BRZ or Mustang HPP.
I'd imagine for everything except autocross the Mustang is just as competent, but faster and more comfortable. Probably comes down to personal preference for the feel.
I subscribed at 1:51 for the bike fit test. Too bad this BRZ86 doesn't get a bubble hatchback lid like the old Porsche 924/944.
Agreed! I would immediately throw down money for a sporty two-seater with a nice bubbly hatch like the original trueno.
Bubble hatch would be amazing! Thanks for subscribing.
Less rigid hatchback? This is a sports car.
Even if it fits, it gonna scratch the car interior long term.
I really like blind spot monitoring on all of my cars.
Ordered the premium cause of heated seats and the nicer interior, I know it’ll help me living in Canada lol
Ouuu the sound system too, I love music so any upgrade is better 😂 everything else is also a benefit
How is the ultrasuede holding up? Seems like it’d get dirty and age poorly, kinda wish they’d offer the premium with cloth seats
I'm thinking about getting rid of my sport bike and getting a GR86. My other car is a 4Runner.
Won't give you the same thrills as a sport bike but it's still fun. And a heck of a lot safer :)
What would you chose betwen the 86 and Elantra N, and why?
They're just totally different cars. If you need 4 doors you cannot go wrong with the Elantra. If you want the purest of sports car experiences and don't need the space, it's the 86.
As I know it is very hard to buy one now in the US. I searched a lot but most dealers don’t have this car in their inventory. Is there any suggestion that how can I get one of this?
Your best bet is to order one. It will take a few months but trying to find inventory now will be next to impossible. This way you'll at least be guaranteed a vehicle, eventually.
Idk the different spoiler and heated seats might be worth it
Can’t decide between this and the premium
Can't go wrong either way!
You'll need to take off the front wheel and the non drive side crank pedal. I used to fit my 29" mtn bike in my '13 BRZ all the time.
No one cares about your ancient car
Yep, it definitely would have fit if I also took a pedal off but I mean, come on, that starts to get pretty annoying to do all the time. If I owned one I'd probably get a rear bike rack or something to avoid disassembly all the time.
@@gustavopaulette3496 go back under your bridge, no one cares what you think 🙄
Ah the Greaty6, a great choice!
The BIKE-fitting part is a bit nonsensical - been riding and building bikes for 20 years, and fitting them in car boots for as long. For the road bike - you undid the seat tube, allowing the seat tube to rotate - unfair to the MTB. In addition, every bike, no matter road or MTB - has both it wheels removable (almost) as easily - so with a removed rear wheel, like you should have done in the video - this car should without problems fit even a 29" MTB with the largest of frame sizes. If the quick release seats were taken off, as well - the car would, involving some minor amount of wiggling - fit even two 29'' MTBs. But the problem is that the bew Civic Si would fit even more... Anyway. Greetings from Latvia, thanks for the overall informative video.
What if I get the premium and swap just the rears to primacys ?
That would be fun. Full drift spec!
How do you have the same mannerisms and video format as Doug to a fucking tee? I feel like I entered a parallel reality watching this. Not hating - it's a good review.
It was just for fun, glad you enjoyed the review!

Man piping noise through the speakers ALWAYS sounds like crap. It's just wearing. So frustrating when they don't offer an on-screen control of the active sound design.
Glad the spoiler is not on the base model.
I'm probably wrong, but is hard to think someone carrying a full size bike on the back of a GR86... probably a better choice to get some beater that do you don't care enough for it getting destroyed on the way to the trails...
It's just for fun. I do it on all my reviews. I don't expect people to use these to haul massive items, but it's interesting to know what it can and can't do.
Trueno Blue... isn't this the same color as Oceanic Blue back then? And Neptune Blue is the same as Hyper Blue?
Basically, yes.
Using Doug's "THIS....." line, lol..
I'm getting my hands on the gr86 pretty soon. The problem though is I really like the premium model specifically for the duckbill spoiler and the aluminum foot pedals, but would still want the primacy tires on it. It's a hard choice to make
Edit: after thinking ahout it I'm going for the premium. it's more bang for your buck anyway.
having the same battle myself
You could buy the premium and then find a used set of wheels and tires second hand. I bet someone who bought the base model and upgraded would sell them cheap..
And the interior that actually feels plush.
Yeah go premium, swap the tyres and you’ll recoup some money back on buying the better model.
Missed opportunity for them to make this in a LIFT back
Missed opportunity for you to not whine about trivial crap
How tall are you?
Missed the perfect opportunity to show the car against the other drivers
Haha, I think I bruised some egos with the last one..
How much does the basic model cost?
Greetings from Germany
Around $28k USD.
This or Elantra N as a daily driver? Rear seats will only be needed for a 2-5 year old toddler so small seats shouldn’t be an issue.
Even with small kids I think the 86 would be a struggle. I'd personally go Elantra N since it's still fun but way more useable for multiple passengers.
Gees dude I appreciate the bike test but that's all.
Need heated seats, black wheels and adaptive headlights.
Why does no reviewer talk about the sound system?
It's completely average.
The premium owners who want the less sticky tires should buy the wheels/tires off of the base owners who want stickier tires lol
i'll take the top level one.

I hate how they ruined the rear end of the car. The 1st gen looks so much cooler and aggressive. This one looks so... normal.
i previously had a '14 FRS, and loved it bc it was my 1st 6 speed/manual. Love the rear end, front end is an eye sore for me. I see they have fixed the torque dip but I wouldn't buy this instaed i'll go w. the mx5 club/mx5 rf b/c it's a convertible. Yes, it has less power but most importantly it's lighter than this (i recall the frs was something like 2730 ish lbs whereas the miata is around 2400 lbs ish).
Both are great choices. You can't go wrong with either. But yeah, if you want a convertible only one option..
