I first saw the full length Matthew Bourne's "swan lake" online by accident about 2 years ago, but it was just so stunning. Not only the choreography, but the emotions as well. I've never thought I could appreciate the classical type of dance, or just dance in general, but it has opened a whole world for me now that I love art more. I started to do ballet. Wish I saw it earlier.
All my life I have wanted to see male swans due to the way I was born and finally I got my wish. It overwhelmed me the first time I saw Bourne's "Swan-Lake"...sandy-gay-ecossais
The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me. The strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests to the musculature of a male dancer more readily than a ballerina in her white tutu.......
Just seen production at Newcastle. Amazing performance, such intensity of emotion. Great to see ballet unleashed from the shackles of the classical tradition. I think tchaikovsky would have been proud.
I just love this video of Matthew Bournes Swan Lake. There is so much emotion coming from the male dancers. I can't watch females dancing it anymore. The dance of the young swans makes me smile.
I think it was somewhat comedical the first time I watched it, but then I watched it again and again and now I'm in awe of the dancers who did this.. it's amazing and I hope to see it live one day
Everyone is saying: "It is gay" others "It is not gay" but the cuestion is "what if it is?" "what is the problem?" Somebody please tell me. Because I don't understand.
Fleur Laser, ust admit you're homophobic already. The original Swan Lake already contains sexual and romantic themes between heterosexuals. Why is it bad if it's between men?
There have been a lot of ballett performances played only by women in the past and a lot of performances played only by men. There have been times in the past when women weren't allowed to play roles in theatre or something common, so all the roles where played by men. It's not a big deal but people are just dumb. You can interpret it how you want to. If people want to think that it is gay, then it can be gay. But you can also interpret it as heterosexuell. But people shouldn't have problems with things THEY interpret by themselves :D if they have a problem with it they should interpret it otherwise, it's their choice :D
The original story of odette transforming between human and swan is more sexualised than bourne’s version. His swans are just that, and to me feel more realistic in representation to real swans who although graceful and pretty are also vicious when they want to be.
The Art of Dance is a discipline, yet it is still ever changing and expanding. Art in and of itself is meant to provoke thought, discourse, open minds and hearts to the possibility of more than the reality one currently lives in, to challenge thought and promote change in society. This work does this and so much more. As a dancer it makes my heart soar. As a human it brings joy to my soul.
Seen the ballet three times and still never tire of watching. Adam Cooper and Jonathan Olivier (unfortunately I can't remember the third!) but each different and amazing in their own right. Loved Olivier though - such loss.
"Wow, ACTUAL Swans like the swans in the pond by my old apartment. Pretty from the distance but they'll rip your head off if they were ever so slightly bigger..."
"This isn’t gay, it’s not about being gay, there’s no gay undertone" goodness gracious, you guys are obsessed with things staying straight. You need help.
I think it was absolutely beautiful - if you choose to interpret it as gay then that is your prerogative - Jonathan Ollivier could not have been a more beautiful, masculine swan Rest in peace - such a tragedy that he is gone, such a beautiful dancer X
+Chelsea Aitken (WindWaker1) Yes tragically he was killed in a motorbike accident on his way to Sadlers Wells on Sunday August 9th to play the lead role of Luca in the closing show for The Carman - absolutely tragic X
Most of this brilliant interpretation is serious and, so to speak, straight. This first scene is close to a parody of the familiar one in which four female cygnets dance prissily connected with crossed arms. Bourne says swans are powerful animals and this is more the way actual young swans act--macho.
ppl hating it for looking like chicken but i really liked that kinda interpretation XD it really worked well with the music~ also reflected more the playfulness of the "four little swans".
So what if it's gay? Gay doesn't necessarily mean not masculine, there are as many ways to gay as there are to be hetero and as a woman I have no problem with any of them, all I care about is whether you're an arsehole or not, and who you love and who you fuck has nothing to do with that. Also: this is the greatest thing I've ever seen. I fricken LOVE it.
If you take bits in isolation like that then yes, I can see why people would think it’s gay, but to me it was more like the Prince was rejecting having a girlfriend and although it’s implied in act 2 that the one he really wants is a male stranger, to me it was more that he didn’t want to be human. Life as a swan was much more appealing to him. So his love for the swan was not so much a romantic one but one of longing to be the same. Without the weight of a kingdom or the shame and disregard from his mother.
The makeup and the costume lead me to think of the final scenes of "Billy Elliot" (the movie) where we see the adult Billy in his debut. I wonder if the producers of the movie had this choreography in mind, or if it was just coincidence.
Because Billy Elliot who has grown up to become a professional dancer is shown appearing in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. Which is a deliberately very masculine take on a traditional ballet, and therefore very story-appropriate.
is there a DVD of THIS production with these dancers? I have found the one with Adam Cooper as lead swan, one with Richard Wilson but not this one. help please? thk!
Did he portray the grown character of Billy Elliot in the movie's last scene... ?? Oooppps, never mind, that was Adam Cooper.... Made a fantastic leap in Swan Lake...
same... i mean, 'in thousand years' :) i found this masterpiece thanks to Billy Elliot movie. how i could live without it until then, eludes me. original Swan Lake music is very enjoyable but classic choreography... er... not. but those flulffy-pants ducklings :D
seriously stop with this bullshit of “this isn’t gay” or “this is gay”. THIS IS ART! on art there is no such thing like sexuality, gender or stereotypes. On art there is only passion, love, freedom and the right of any expression. so please stop putting labels on it, art is the only thing in this world that will be forever free in all kinda of ways
This has been my favorite ballet show in the past more than 10 years time. May I know more about this version of the show? Who the dancers are? I would like to purchase a copy of this if it's available somewhere. Thanks!
Dance is an Art Form, as such it does not have a gender, nor a sexual orientation. Just like other arts, it may be inspired by a wide range of subjects, and yet it doesn't endorse nor comdemn but instead provokes thought.
This isn't gay, nor is it messed up or distorted from the original, it's an interpretations. One that you can't truly feel the emotion of until you're in the theatre.
Salad days bought me here tbh it's beautiful
Me too.

I've seen this live twice, amazing production. I cant picture females playing the swans now.
The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me. The strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests to the musculature of a male dancer more readily than a ballerina in her white tutu.......
Yes, the idea was to show the other side of swans - the aggressive, powerful side. Swans are after all quite nasty creatures!
Still waiting for the all-male Sailor Moon 😔✊
You two think women can't be aggressive??
@@happynewfears1805 or strong ... but we have to admit that this interpretation is great ^^
theoriginalsuzycat so men represent the nasty lol
This is classic. You should see the whole Bourne's "Swan Lake". It's amazing and beautiful.
All in Swan Lake is too love. Lots of congratulations. 🎉
This shows the gentle side and aggressive side of a male swan. Sheer beauty 🦢🦢🦢

Have seen this live 3 times , stunningly beautiful it takes your breath away
Thank you Matthew Bourne.. Was fascinated from the first moment.. The intense Dynamic.. Sensibility.. and their creativity are impressive. love it!!
Just seen production at Newcastle. Amazing performance, such intensity of emotion. Great to see ballet unleashed from the shackles of the classical tradition. I think tchaikovsky would have been proud.
I saw it in Newcastle also, it was amazing, funny, intense and a totally different slant on the traditional Swan Lake
Rosebellebelieves Can you tell me the name of the lead swan danseur??
@@WindWakerWin Jonathan Olivier, he dead in 1915
@@ludmilaf982 // 2015 he died in a car accident a great loss

I have watched this over and over and over again! It is so beautiful, fascinating, and so unexpected!
I’m here from salad days☺️ what an amazing performance!
You're also here to watch this??????
What a coincidence
Omg same hahah
I think it was somewhat comedical the first time I watched it, but then I watched it again and again and now I'm in awe of the dancers who did this.. it's amazing and I hope to see it live one day
I learned about this from the ending of billy Elliot. Awesome. Very touching
This is one of the most spectacular, beautiful and wondrous balletsI have ever seen - magnificent on every level - loved every moment.
Thank you.
Simply beautiful modern dancing to the music of Swan Lake. I would love to see this show.
Everyone is saying: "It is gay" others "It is not gay" but the cuestion is "what if it is?" "what is the problem?" Somebody please tell me. Because I don't understand.
Fleur Laser I don't see how being gay would sexualise it...

Why can't you dance in swan suits with your homies without someone calling you gay 😤

+Chris H You mean Richard Winsor? He's good, but I prefer the original one- Adam Cooper
Just plain Wonderful.........
For christ sake Tchaikovsky was gay. pretty sure he would be amazed.
Raymond Lopez how can you prove it
I cannot agree more, Raymond.
How tf do you know Tchaikovsky's sexuality
Also, I'm pretty sure he would've been executed for that back then
Raquel Sacramed no need, there are so many letter from Tchaikovsky or about him, it was no secret even at that time
"Wow, ACTUAL Swans like the swans in the pond by my old apartment. Pretty from the distance but they'll rip your head off if they were ever so slightly bigger..."
So true, well at least they are beauties when keeping their beaks shut
I really want a pair of fluffy trousers now.....
Grace Butcher omg I was thinking the same thing. Like where can I get them.
i love how they have the grace of swans but they are also birds so they can be really jumpy and head bobby X"D
Saw this again last night at Sadler's Wells - amazing how much of the choreography and visuals has been changed! Love it.
Awesome ballet. I went to see this in London. i was stunned.
Amazing, sublime a great pleasure to watch

Would it break your heart if it was gay?
It's a interpretation, yeah. An interpretation where the two protagonists are not straight.
Being a girl, or a boy, gay or not, it's not a real swan but the mythological idea of a swan, a kind of magic character.
I do not care whether it is gay or not. I just like how they dance.
indeed, it's a comlicated emotional piece. A great essay about it: www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1300/J082v45n02_11
