      The prices in the UK are far cheaper than in Australia though, cheapest MX5 I could find was about $7,000AUD and it had about 270,000kms on the clock, though you could get a decent one for 10K. The parts and labor costs would also probably be way higher here :(

      MX-5s not expensive in the US, but not so unbelievably cheap as in UK. The only the you could get for 1K lbs in the US is a bad clunker or a hidden gem. 1k lbs approx $1300 in the US is pretty much nothing, a car that hopefully will run for a year if you are lucky. I can't imagine getting that MX-5 for under $2500 n the US.

    Nice to see some in the UK are now quoting rwhp (which is what a chassis dyno measures) and not extrapolating crank bhp and quoting it as gospel.
    Would be interesting to perform the same experiment using a TorSen LSD, bigger braked (including ABS), wider tyred 2001 onwards Sport model fitted with upgraded suspension bushes and a decent set of anti-roll bars (e.g. 1.125” hollow front, 12mm rear).

      The miata weighs 500-600 pounds lighter depending on model and has a shorter wheel base. At low speeds and normal driving, it's more fun regardless of price. Just like most people would agree a go kart is more fun than a car, that's a miata compared to almost any other car.

    A stiffer front sway bar would've been a good investment. The mx-5 sway bars are made to over-steer a bit out of the box, because it's more fun to drive like that. Having it tend to under-steer slightly however can improve your lap times and make the car more stable and less twitchy at corner entry. In any case a great and easy build for a fun track car and daily.

    • @Yowzoe
      @Yowzoe 8 лет назад

      Looks like front sway bars for NAs range from 11mm to 21mm. Is bigger always better (for a hard-driving daily)?

    • @edge21str
      @edge21str 8 лет назад

      Yowzoe
      For hard driving in general I'd get the thickest one available to you for a good price. If you look into tubular sway bars you can even find ones that are up to 29mm thick and still save weight, but they're a little more expensive.

    You too can buy an mx5 for 1k, spend 4k on mods and have a car worth 1k still.

      asambi69 doesn't matter what it's worth in the end. it's a project car for the owner to enjoy you ignorant moron.

      Money doesn't matter when it comes to a project car. It's not something they are going to sell.

      asambi69 you are the moron thinking you can drive money. What good is $5,000 sitting in the bank? You still need a car stupid. Some people choose to enjoy their money, you choose to do nothing. Moron.

      All those parts are removable and will sell for similar to what you bought them for.
      Plus its a FACT that mx5 of this era are gaining not losing value. Oh and mods on them tend to increase the value not too far off the value of the parts fitted.

    The MX-5 is one of the few current cars that'll make a Boxster look like a bigger car.

    Awesome episode Mat! I think next you should have replaced the old exhaust pipes. A more freeing flow one can gain you another 10hp or so.

    you know, excitement has not necessarily something to do with quick laptimes. i am a boxster owner, but i think in this case the mx5 would be the more exciting car on the track because it's a bit trickier to drive and pivots and wiggles it's rear a bit more than the porsche. the porsche would still be the overall better car, but just for the fun of it, the mx5 would in my opinion be the better choice.

    One of my mates had a fully built, bored/stroked block, and custom turbo kit running over 20psi of boost on a custom tune on his NA Miata. There is NOTHING in the world quicker than a built Miata, and it was the fastest machine I had ever driven. Even Ferrari's and track bikes were made to look foolish. Mazda engineers are geniuses who offer an affordable car with endless potential. Nothing competes with a "modded" Miata!
