I always thought the Ford Duratec 3.0 was a waaaay underrated engine. Sitting in the rusted hulks of Ford Taurus’ in junk yards all over America is a Porsche-designed, 24-valve, four-cam, all aluminum V6 that can be had for a song. From the factory the motors were under stressed, Ford looking for a MPG/reliability compromised versus all out power. I have a winter beater Escape with this power plant and when I first got it I was climbing a 1500 foot mountain road and decided to get on it. Once the transmission kicked down the valves opened up as the motor came on cam with a nice linear rush of power; I remember thinking there’s a sports car engine hiding in there somewhere. People keep suggesting you should put in a V8 or some other ultra-high HP engine, bullocks! With the Miata’s lightweight the Ford V6 has the perfect power delivery profile and 240HP is more than enough. Most people run out of skill long before they run out of power. Sometimes it’s not about shredding rubber but actually driving.
Strangely i don't like the most 6 cylinder sounds. I drive a inline 6 BMW myself, but i can't stand the sound. On the other hand the sound my inline six rb20 made, was just so damn good.
wonder why? would had been a home run!... I have a 1997 M edition 1.8 beautiful car, but way too slow. V6 is the answer . I wonder what other V6 engine could be use here in the USA?
Totally agree. Mazda needs to develop a Skyactiv V6, they probably have no idea how many fresh customers they'd gain. They can advertise their L4 develop "V6-range" torque as much as they want, that won't make them sound like anything else than L4's unless they spent much time into acoustics or use a stupid speaker trick some already chose to market. It's not as if conception would be a financial disaster, with CNC and CAD it's nuts really, the only added cost would be the additional parts (2 more pistons, after all) and production chain management (some downtimes going L4/V6 and V6/L4) Just see how the 3 cylinders engines Ford, PSA and Renault sell were all praised for the sound they produce so much more than how few gasoline they burn (easy, though, as real driving conditions don't lead to the claimed numbers at all, at least in the EU)... FIAT did the mistake of going right down the L2 route and, apart from the tiny 500 (which ancestor had an L2 too, albeit with a rear engine/RWD configuration), this engine is really not welcome. Alfa Romeo using it was perhaps the worse strategy ever, although they had other design issues (tennis ball sized gear knob in the Giulietta, MiTo's suspension, totally useless overmarketed DNA selector...)
Jean-Marc Chevalier Perhaps they could pull a VW and join two SkyActiv 2.0 I4's at the crank. If they can get the specific output of the 1.5 engine (it's higher) they'll have a MazdaSpeed MX-5.
Jean-Marc Chevalier i believe the 2.5 turbo skyactiv from the cx 9, with less torque and higher hp higher rpms (shorter piston rods) could do the job without the investment on developing a good v6 from scratch.
I thought it was kinda weird that he put a Jag V6 in there, but then I remembered that the S-type V6 is the same thing as the Duratec 3.0 V6, made by Ford, who also owned Mazda. So I guess it actually makes a lot of sense.
I can attest, this is a great engine. I've got a '99 Taurus wagon (laugh if you want) with the earliest generation Duratec 3.0. 155k miles, dad's daily driver since new, but the engine is still incredibly healthy. It'll pull and rev, but you can tell a Taurus is too heavy for it. There's something about it that just feels like it'll go well in a smaller sports car, and not just because of the power numbers. Response, maybe? There are probably thousands or millions of rusted-out Tauruses in junk yards right now who could donate their engines to good projects like this. Ford used it from 1996-2012 in various forms, too. I've always dreamed of doing it the day my beloved wagon quite literally rusts in half.
The Jaguar X-Type with the 3.0 is a delightful driving experience because the Jag is pretty lightweight and small, with AWD. I can't imagine how much more fun it would be RWD and as light as an MX-5
i'm not sure about saving money :). it would be a good project but too complicated i think. but someone has put a ferrari v8 at the front of a gt86 so...
turbo power is cheap power but not nice power, an NA power curve beats it any time for driving pleasure. (and i say this as the ex owner of a turbo Skyline) ; turbos do have a strong top end though, great for overtaking.
Simply one of the greatest sounding cars I've ever heard. Sounds like a Porsche from the good old days when they were making proper drivers' cars. No wonder they designed it.
I have a 1st genMiata and I have been dreaming about a V6 swap for ages, I love that...in the end I've decided to go a different way and do a built naturally aspirated 1.8 liter soon and then put the whole drivetrain into an Exocet down the road. But I will always, always love V6 swap Miatas. These cars love to be naturally aspirated or supercharged due to the response and, IMO, that 6 cylinder sound is PERFECT for the car. Funnily enough, not only do I have the Miata, but I also have an Escape V6...with the 3.0 Duratec XD Just gotta put them together!
Ryukachoo it's a Ford Duratech 3.0 Jag used in the S Type when under Ford branches. Really solid engine and platform, same one used in new Ford GT Ecoboost platform.
Volvo 5 cyl is transverse. The fabled Audi 2200 cc 20v turbo engine is longitudinal and has an eargasmic sound. Plus it has 230 bhp (ABY, AAN code), 315 if you find an RS2 engine. :-)
Inline 6 definitely sounds way better, but there is no RB26DE. You can make one from a DET (custom pistons, custom cams etc) like Kang did in the fuguz but that this was way too much money for not much power (something like 230whp). There are some very rare RB25DE's but again not worth the hassle.
CobobS12 I was going to say a BMW M20 lump but then thought about an M50.... Great engine with good tuning options if the standard 192 bhp isnt enough, Dont know if it would fit though.
I definitely think V6-ing Phil could be good. Keeping the V6 relatively small in displacement, I think, would be best for trying to maintain the car's phenomenal handling balance. So something like the SVT Contour's 2.5L V6 (which is also a revvy engine), could be rather fun. Less power than this 3.0L car, certainly, but the reduced weight should help compensate somewhat for that.
Hammer Rocks Apparently they say this V6 is all aluminium (assuming block and heads) while the original I4 was all cast iron, if I remember correctly. You might wanna double-check that though...
I'm SO glad that this is a cool/interesting swap that has ever been done before (I don't think). A 3.0 Jaguar v6? That's WAY cooler than a 5.3 Chevy v8
Magnus Sivertsen no I know it wouldn't but it would be an awesome project besides I've seen someone put the V10 from an e60 M5 in a lada so anythings possible aha
Good choice with the v6, sounds very nice. Flat 6 or straight 6 will probably not fit without chopping up the whole front end, I'd imagine that less would need to be done to fit a v6
Steve 88 the car was built to hold a lil 1.6 4 cylinder now in forza I got a 3.2 litre in a Miata but in real life it would jus be a peace of shit maybe a 2.0 3 rotor would be cool
That ford duratec is a fantastic engine. Very reliable. My old 2000 taurus had the 3.0 duratec. Best year in that body style taurus aswell. 2000 year was the only duratec year in that body style taurus that got cop. Wish it was a bit lighter but its always sounded great when you put your foot in it! almost 240k and climbing. Engine runs dead silent. No ticking or any junk like that.
I've been into vw cars for awhile now and VR6 are great engines. It's a normal German engine and with proper maintenance will have no issues. It is highly modable and cheap
Horse6L the 12 valve was a bit unreliable because it was more aggressive than the 24v, if you check out on the internet you could find some VW with the VR6 wich have 400.000km on the clock and they're perfectly running, i had this engine so i'm not talking shit :)
The SR20 isn't really that expensive. The NA Models are more or less very cheap, and you can pick up an SR20DET Engine from an 180SX with 182HP I think for under 3 Grand. Spend another Grand on a Turbo and boom, 300HP easy.
Doesn't really fit, would need a whole new gearbox + rear end. Completely unrealistic, though people have done 2JZ's - y tho? This is not what the MX-5 is all about.
Hey just fyi you can get the 3.5L ecoboost in crate for like five and a half thousand pound. And the ecoboost is just the duratec bored and stroked and with two turbochargers. just fyi
fred renault 1J and 2J won't fit without sticking half the engine out of the hood. I know a dude who did it to his and he basically can't run a hood unless he wants a gaping hole in it for the engine to stick out of.
he should use the 3.5l v6 from a toyota aurion (or camry v6) which funnily enough was used in the lotus evora..... there is a supercharged model too....
Izimujack the Honda v-TEC 3.5l V6 has 248 HP out the box (the one that is not a hybrid). The hybrid one (from the new NSX) would be even better, am I correct?
Alex, lookup the LFX swap. It is the most common swap in the US for multiple reasons. You can read up on it here: www.miataturbo.net/engine-performance-56/miata-lfx-swap-singular-motorsports-good-win-racing-85075/
I have a Mazda6 that I'm pretty sure has that same V6 in it. It revs out quite nicely and has been absolutely bulletproof over 125,000 miles. I bet it's an absolute monster in a Miata or MX-5 or whatever.
Ever considered dropping the BMW E46 M3 Inline 6 engine in the MX-5? You can rev that to around 8000 RPM (just 1000 RPM shy of the Rotary). 252 kw and 365 newton meters too. And its naturally aspirated.
Not just the ST220, but loads of other cars besides. Lincoln LS, Mazda6, Mazda MPV, Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape, Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan/Lincoln Zephyr(MKZ), Ford Taurus, and others. Aston Martins 6.0L V12 is also basically 2 of those engines mated end to end. It's an incredibly versatile and reliable engine. I have a Fusion with that engine and it has 158k miles on it, and it's never given me an issue.
MishoMods For sure it's his car he can do whatever he wants to it and nobody can tell him not to, it's just that a longitudinal engine would be easier and more cost effective swap.
Jaguar AJ (Jag X-type, same block as a Duratec but with VCT heads), Duratec ST from a Mondeo ST220, Alfa Romeo Busso V6 (Alfa 155), Mazda KL-series 2.0L or 2.5L (Mazda 626, Ford Telstar, Ford Probe), all go very well and sound glorious
@@NatedoggZombies not lighter than the v6 that was fitted. Also the ls1 doesnt rev particularly high which is something you want in a lightweight sportscar for more fun, and one reason why rotaries are still so loved. I get 7.5k rpm in my 2019 mx5 and love jt
Ever since my friends got into motor bikes in the 90s I've had a dream of an international project to make a v8 engine for the MX. Two big four cylinder motorbike blocks joined into a 90 degree V8! Something with perhaps 250 to 300 HP with the inherent smoothness of a v8 ... that revs and revs. It slots into every model, geez I'd chip in for one of them.
SR20 or a K24, either would be the best options. Large aftermarket options, cheap repairs, good reliability, and many many many people who know a lot about the two engines. Id lean towards SR20 because i like nissan more, but that doesnt mean the K24 isnt an awesome engine. They both are literally Legos and you can build these within weeks if you have all the parts.
As the owner of a 2007 V6 Honda Accord, I always thought the engine was great. Today I put two and two together and realized that a Miata with a J30A5 engine would be great. Hopefully I can go through with it this summer and onwards
Just buy a brand new MX5, no one on RUclips is rolling one that I know of and I know you got deep pockets thanks to Car Throttle, hell, make them pay part of it for you since it will be on their channel!
This is unique. I remember when I met you in Monterey at cannery row and you were telling me all about your fantasies in regards to putting a BMW V6 in Phil. This is a close second to a BMW I would say! Your affection for this car was evident haha.
+Amun TOO anything but a trash rotary, more of an ls guy but I fuck with Honda motors too. They don't need to be rebuilt every 70k miles like rotaries 😂
everyone's like "2jz!" "v8!" "bmw e46 inline 6!" "rb26!" and I'm just like go rotary! yeah it might not be as reliable and efficient but fuck it who doesn't love a bridge port rotary idle! even an N/A rotary would be sick and it would be reliable as if taken care of right
Makes me seem weird then. I would like a V8 under a Miata, but not an LS. Something along the lines of a modern Ford DFV. Or two Honda K20s arranged in a V8 configuration. Or Judd racing... The list goes on. I wanna hear this car scream.
TimSkater no wonder since he was running 250 on stock internals and those engines are good for about 210, you're pushing it if you try and get more without upgrading things, no wonder it blew up
My personal dream is to have an NB MX-5 but instead of the usual LS V8 swap, I would like to put a Nissan RB20DET in an MX-5. Maybe I'm just being influenced by my father's Triumph TR-6 but I feel like a roadster isn't a roadster without a 6 cylinder. I believe that the RB20 would be perfect. It's a small displacement in line six with a turbo, that also happens to be fairly bulletproof and due to it's size, installing it into an MX-5 would probably be easier than throwing in a large displacement V8 and you probably wouldn't have to delete the air conditioning or the power steering. Another big selling point is that they already come with a turbo and are easily modified, getting power out of the RB is pretty straight forward and you're not adding so much power that it unbalances the way the car behaves. And while it's easy to get a little extra power from the RB20, due to it's smaller displacement you're not going to end up over powering what the chassis can handle, unless of course you go nuts and start fiddling with the engines internals. Also, the RB20 is a very inexpensive engine when compare to most other engines used in many of today's modified MX-5s. People love the RB25DET, RB26DET, SR20DET, 2JZ and LS-V8s but all of those engines are in high demand and for some reason the RB20 is overlooked. Another good choice would be an inline six from BMW. Inline 6s are their bread and butter but their engines certainly aren't cheap. The guy in this video has the right idea. It's not a true roadster without a six banger. That being said, I'd take any MX-5 any day of the week and as odd as this sounds, especially with all the amazing cars that exist today, the MX-5 is my dream car. It reminds me of the Triumph Spitfire my father owned and taught me how to drive stick shift. It has a fantastically forgiving chassis that allows you to properly learn car control, weight transfer, counter steering, heel-toe breaking, maintaining momentum through corners and looking like a gods damn super hero with your driving skills to whoever is in the passenger seat. The remarkable thing about the Spitfire was it's lack of power, only 88 horse power and it was, to this day, the most fun I've ever had driving a car. So yeah, this guy with his Jaguar V6 is on the right path.
can i point out how tastefully this interior was done?
i mean damn that's pretty
Ryukachoo like a Bentley
I know! it looks so classy
Ryukachoo yea right! its beautiful and clean!
i have sean this interior b4 but always in black. i think there used to be a company that made the door panels and trim parts. i might be wrong but can any one verify?
The only thing better than a well furnished V6 miata is a quad-rotor RX-7 :P
Apologies for the reupload everyone, we've got the cardboard boxes and are now packing up Ethan's desk.
Car Throttle tell him I said hi
Car Throttle lol
Rightfully so.
please do it for phill....and pleasegive us every moment of rebuild and ...if this engine is too expensive...dont you think that VR6 from golf would do the same trick? :-) meaby better...its smaller
Car Throttle yes, yes,YES!!! Pleeeaase
The freaking leather interior and these wheels, the handling, the sound, the power..
This is the perfect mx5.
Sweet .Ninja yeah those holes in the air filter. Yes it is a nice car but it's not complete
BTW, cheap parts and unlimited availability are pluses too.
A lot of those junk Tauruses, however, have the infamously nasty Vulcan v6 though. Putting that in MX-5 would be truly despicable.
How about the later V8 Taurus SHO engine? :)
Im pretty sure all escapes have the 3.0 vulcan
magzilla vlogs no with the escape and Mazda tribute tarus with 24v badges lincon LS (rear drive)are all duratec v6
V6 sounds wonderful
Agreed.
But V8 sounds better :) (I don't realy know if this would fit in a tiny miata)
it had been done many times v8 corvette engine or mustang search monstermiata
Strangely i don't like the most 6 cylinder sounds. I drive a inline 6 BMW myself, but i can't stand the sound. On the other hand the sound my inline six rb20 made, was just so damn good.
Morris I know what you mean
V6 : definitely YES
superjaska100 900 bhp in miata lol how old are you srly.. ?
now w16
Well, there's a V12 MX-5, the W16 is probably shorter. Quite likely wider too...
v6 mustang
4 rotors : fuck yeah!
'Phil, you're going to get a V6, i don't care how much it costs' next video after the build 'how much has my V6 mx5 financially ruined me'
v6 should have been an option from the start
that mazda 1,8 from the mx3 would had been a riot
There were plans for a Mazdaspeed version with a 6 but it got shelved.
nah, a 13b rotary should have been in the miata all along
wonder why? would had been a home run!... I have a 1997 M edition 1.8 beautiful car, but way too slow. V6 is the answer . I wonder what other V6 engine could be use here in the USA?
A N they can ship rocketeer to usa
That actually sounds right like a sports car should. Mazda should of done a V6 from the start.
Totally agree.

They should make a 2.5L INLINE 6! Because inlines are awesome. Probably wouldn't fit though. My Z3 has a really long hood.
You should apply for a job at Mazda and teach them how to run a company. But first learn proper grammar. People will take you more seriously.
I thought it was kinda weird that he put a Jag V6 in there, but then I remembered that the S-type V6 is the same thing as the Duratec 3.0 V6, made by Ford, who also owned Mazda. So I guess it actually makes a lot of sense.
Also, got a 2006 S-type V6 with 91k miles on it and it's practically brand new. Engine runs like a dream. Good choice for a swap in my opinion
Daniel Pfender It's a rubbish engine
Billy Mays it's a mazda engine. one of the best v6's built
I can attest, this is a great engine. I've got a '99 Taurus wagon (laugh if you want) with the earliest generation Duratec 3.0. 155k miles, dad's daily driver since new, but the engine is still incredibly healthy. The Jaguar X-Type with the 3.0 is a delightful driving experience because the Jag is pretty lightweight and small, with AWD. I can't imagine how much more fun it would be RWD and as light as an MX-5
Alexander Addison I love my 3.0 xtype. I want the piper cam kit for it .
I'm coming from the future. And Phil is getting his V6 😁
make phill collins
just put the engine of your M3 in your mx5 (if it can fit)
fablo dibongo great idea
I agree. It would be good E2E build and not kit slap-on so more episodes, he would save money and engine is really good.
i'm not sure about saving money :).
it would be a good project but too complicated i think.
but someone has put a ferrari v8 at the front of a gt86 so...
fablo dibongo that's a good idea!
i remember in top gear when jeremy fitted a ferrari engine into the back of a van fucking hilarious
Sounds amazing! I still think turbo is the way go for best possible performance but I understand the V6 sounds, feels, and performs pretty well too!
Gingium You won't think the same way when your engine explodes.
turbo power is cheap power but not nice power, an NA power curve beats it any time for driving pleasure. (and i say this as the ex owner of a turbo Skyline) ; turbos do have a strong top end though, great for overtaking.
Duratec 3.0 is stupid powerful with turbo.. 850hp.. In the noble its crazy
no replacement for displacement :D put Viper V10 in :D
no they make the same power
V6 MX5. ITS A MUST
thinking of v6s now
Simply one of the greatest sounding cars I've ever heard. Sounds like a Porsche from the good old days when they were making proper drivers' cars. No wonder they designed it.
Do you mean the tanks?

Mathew Clark follow your dreams !! :D
JUST DO IT!!!
Mathew Clark when you do the Exocet put an ls3 in it! I saw one recently pull 1.6g on the skid pad at Road Atlanta and it is an absolute riot to drive
Get a V6 for Phil, then turbo it ^.^
statesidesupercars or supercharge
What if you have a 5 liter inline 4?
A supercharger would be better, Jaguar usually supercharge their engines anyway.
Or just ANYTHING that works would be an improvement..
R35-mx5 hybrid
1:50
i was expecting that honda v6 people sometimes recommend
i would NEVER have THOUGHT of a jaguar v6. do those even run past 1000 miles?
Ryukachoo it's a Ford Duratech 3.0 Jag used in the S Type when under Ford branches. Really solid engine and platform, same one used in new Ford GT Ecoboost platform.
I was also hoping to see a J-series V6. Such a masterpiece, that thing, especially the J32A2.
Ryukachoo my s type 3.0 v6 has 90000 miles on it and no engine problems ;)
SwapBlogRU it's almost the same engine in my Ford Fusion sport. Mines a 3.5L Ford Duratech v6. Makes about 250 horsepower
I just did some research and if you want to get a jag v6 it only a few hundred to get the engine with low milage and it seems like its pretty reliable
Thank you Bruce. Thank you for not LS-swapping it. Thank you for having some class.
Put a Volvo 5 cylinder in Phill!!! It would be extremely Rare and you have to love that Lovely 5 cylinder sound, and it's not that heavy...
Volvo 5 cyl is transverse. The fabled Audi 2200 cc 20v turbo engine is longitudinal and has an eargasmic sound. Plus it has 230 bhp (ABY, AAN code), 315 if you find an RS2 engine. :-)
if we are doing 5 cylinders do a TTRS engine
Its easy to make the volvo longitudinal with parts from volvo 960 :)
heijxje the 2,2 20v is longitudinal, BUT it was designed to be mounted on a fwd or awd drivetrain so huh
Hi! How can you know that this engine fits in the Miata? :)
nice greets, Max
While a V6 sounds amazing, I think an inline 6 would be more fun... (RB26DE anyone?)
CobobS12 yesssss
mercedes m103 or m104 ;)
That won't work, the engine is too long
Inline 6 definitely sounds way better, but there is no RB26DE.
Phil = the MX-5
Collin = the M3
holy shit, how did i not realize that sooner?
Ha!
Lol, I did not realize that either
M3 engine in the MX5?
David Vu possible :P
David Vu Phil Collins - the guy he loves basically
that interior looks sooo good. Colours are spot on!
I definitely think V6-ing Phil could be good. Keeping the V6 relatively small in displacement, I think, would be best for trying to maintain the car's phenomenal handling balance. So something like the SVT Contour's 2.5L V6 (which is also a revvy engine), could be rather fun. Less power than this 3.0L car, certainly, but the reduced weight should help compensate somewhat for that.
they are the same size :( just the block is punched bigger..
Oh really? I didn't know that, though it makes sense.
The 3.0 is pretty much a bored out 2.5 with a forged crankshaft :)
Ah, I see, that's interesting. I didn't know that the block was the same between the two engines. Makes sense, though, the more I think about it.
How about both a v6 AND a turbo? Alfa’s 2.0L V6 Turbo?
Oh, and Molly made more power than Phil ;)
Gingium molly looks amazing
Gingium Yeah it's true .
really where's the evidence😂
We'll have to wait till Monday... :/
Gingium no way
How does this affect the 50:50 weight distribution? How much extra weight does this V6 put over the front wheels over the 4 cylinder?
Hammer Rocks Apparently they say this V6 is all aluminium (assuming block and heads) while the original I4 was all cast iron, if I remember correctly. You might wanna double-check that though...
the v6 is around 360lbs so it probably only weighs 100lbs more if even that much.
The MX5's engine has an aluminium head.
you can see 1.8 engine at ricer miata channel
usually 4 cyl engines in this range of displacement weight about the same as v6.
That black mx-5 looks and sounds so nice.... I'm kind of jealous of that opportunity you have there. Owning such a car must be awesome.
I'm SO glad that this is a cool/interesting swap that has ever been done before (I don't think). A 3.0 Jaguar v6? That's WAY cooler than a 5.3 Chevy v8
Couldn't have chosen a better v6 for the miata. Easily the best sounding v6 on the planet
Gregory Kanniard Mazdas KL series V6 makes a good noise, also comes in a nice small 2.0L variant that loves to rev!
Busso V6 ;)
Ben B. Rogue Exactly someone that's not a idiot
Gregory Kanniard VR38DETT???
Michael Revilla forgive me if im wrong but is that the motor thats in the transit vans and the old cx-9?
I love the interior. I have a soft spot for quilted leather.
I think the bloke was going for the Fiat Barchetta Riviera special edition look
I got to ride in an Mk1 MX-5 LS1 V8 pushing 410hp at the wheels on an autocross course and OMG the sound the POWA can not be compared.
Phil DEFINITELY deserves a V6, mate.
Do it!
You should take the 2.5 V6 from mazda mx-6
Why? It's the same size but heavier and slower.
Ewacool well pretty much only thing is that it's mazda engine in a mazda car. And I guess mazda engine would be a more reliable
Why would it be more reliable if it's the same engine?
Ewacool but in the video he had a jaguar engine in the black mx5. or have I missed something?
KLZE + Turbo = GG. (Unless you want to go 13B, 20B or (pls) 26B.)
26B Phil would be something.
That is an interesting build! The engine bay looks awesome and it sure sounds good!
The itb setup is sick. Cams and head work and straight pipe. Done
Alex, i know you want a V6 but what about the 3.2 litre inline 6 from the e46 M3? That would be mad
James Wallis I don't think that'd fit without some major modifications.
Magnus Sivertsen no I know it wouldn't but it would be an awesome project besides I've seen someone put the V10 from an e60 M5 in a lada so anythings possible aha
James Wallis I have seen an e46 I-6 in a prelude and had that same thought watching this video.
John Deputy
Cool story
+James Wallis the Lada can take even a Scania V8 engine
"Why should I deny the rest of the world access to this."
Give this man a cookie, a medal and whatever you can give to him.
Good choice with the v6, sounds very nice.
Flat 6 or straight 6 will probably not fit without chopping up the whole front end, I'd imagine that less would need to be done to fit a v6
You're right. Straight six doesn't fit. V6 slots in nicely.
straight 6 does fit its been done however couldn't comment on how it would handle lol.
When a car guy like alex speaks *I NEED A V6 NOW. NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT COSTS. I NEED IT NOW.* Thats a true car guy
2.8 24v VR6, solid and reliable, torque beast, highly tunable in multiple ways, just go for it ;)
P.S: Almost forgot, and it sounds amazing! :D
Or we can go to the 3.2 or 3.6 VR6... there is even a 3.8 one
reliable lol
Fede Petrini didn't know that vr6's were relieble, the ones I worked on all had engine damage during normal usage
I've been into vw cars for awhile now and VR6 are great engines. It's a normal German engine and with proper maintenance will have no issues. It is highly modable and cheap
Horse6L the 12 valve was a bit unreliable because it was more aggressive than the 24v, if you check out on the internet you could find some VW with the VR6 wich have 400.000km on the clock and they're perfectly running, i had this engine so i'm not talking shit :)
phil should get an N54 or SR20 engine conversion, if it's not too pricey
To expensive
Or 2jz
do you seriously think a mx-5 was built to handle that much power?
the chassis tranny and everything down under will implode!
What a beautiful job and perfectly keeping with the MX-5's personality! Thanks.
alfa BUSSO V6 sounds unbelievable
ozzypresident Better than the Busso to me, this one sounds smoother.
Min Chang Listen to a Busso with equal length front pipes and come back to me :D
I just spazzed my bat looking at that mx-5!
David Dixon
Go see a vet.
David Dixon spazzed my bat?
masturbation humor is not very funny.
boofighter lol what?!
Hey just fyi you can get the 3.5L ecoboost in crate for like five and a half thousand pound. And the ecoboost is just the duratec bored and stroked and with two turbochargers. just fyi
That engine, whilst fantastic is probably too big to fit in an MX5
And there is something about a NA engine.
i just installed a EWG in my turbo miata, and well... its amazing how much a change in noise affects your driving experience.
personally, id either go with a 13b, an sr20 or a 1jz, but a v6 sounds interesting.
fred renault or 2jz would be cool too.
would be, but idk, kinda feels odd at the same time.
fred renault 1J and 2J won't fit without sticking half the engine out of the hood. I know a dude who did it to his and he basically can't run a hood unless he wants a gaping hole in it for the engine to stick out of.
even if you relocate the radiator?
Troggie42 an aftermarket hood would fix that problem.
I'm surprised no one has said to put a 13B in it…
XxIbrahimKSAxX that's gay
5:38 "I think a rotary would be way too high maintenance"
Plenty of people have on CarThrottle but he wants a V6 and is pretty much set on it
XxIbrahimKSAxX people have put 13b in mx5s
he should use the 3.5l v6 from a toyota aurion (or camry v6) which funnily enough was used in the lotus evora..... there is a supercharged model too....
Izimujack or the 3.5l Honda V6 w/ v-TEC?
Charles Pletzke equally as good
Izimujack the Honda v-TEC 3.5l V6 has 248 HP out the box (the one that is not a hybrid). The hybrid one (from the new NSX) would be even better, am I correct?
maybe, the toyota one is much cheaper tho and makes a strong 270hp
Izimujack That's true, but Honda needs love, as there are many haters of Hondas, which is very sad.
That steering wheel is beautiful. Very beautiful.
a flat 6 swap maybe ?
They're designed for a rear engine layout...
that's true if you're only talking about porsche . But other companies do flat 6's too like subaru
Only the Porsche ones, not the subaru ones.
Might have to cut a lot out depending on the flat 6. :/
Subaru also make a flat 6
Tom's Turbo Garage did a v8 LS swap in his, give it a watch. Might be another idea.
I know it well. But V8s aren't for me
Fair enough, keep it nice and light.
What about an inline 5? if you can find one, that is.
His weight distribution is near 50/50
Alex, lookup the LFX swap. It is the most common swap in the US for multiple reasons. You can read up on it here: www.miataturbo.net/engine-performance-56/miata-lfx-swap-singular-motorsports-good-win-racing-85075/
I think a V6 would be awesome! Go for it!!
Bruce is a Legend ..He's shared something great.......
finally a unique swap
Sick. I don't know why; but I've always felt as though a V6 swap suits the Miata more than a V8.
Phil & Collin...
Wait what Phil Collins!!
H0LDENSUX won't fit
s200 engine??
You mean Honda S2000 engine? Yeah that would give "WTF moment" to the Honda fan boys.
E46 M54B30 (330i/ci) engine? anyone?
Really? Well that sucks.
lol just buy the z3 that comes with the m54 in that case
would ruin the car's handling dynamics, wouldn't fit, and would be an immense heap of rubbish
GreekBimmer no tuning possibilities u can trust me, better buy an M3 it will come out cheaper...
Michael Swiatek How would it ruin the cars handling dynamics when the M54 weight is identical to that of the MX-5 1.6 4 banger? Just curious.
Put the v6 of the Mazda mx6 on it
It's cheap sounds beautiful and plenty of power
It sounds tremendous. And the two skinny single exhausts are just super classy.
Is there anything we can follow Bruce on? I'm sure a lot of people would like to know where he takes his mx5 next
Sure, check out his website www.rocketeerltd.com/
Car Throttle shoutout to car throttle for replying back to their viewers
Car Throttle cheers
Isnt that V6 out of the "S" Type just a reworked Mondeo st220 motor ?
Dave Gath I think so, yeah
he said its a ford duratec motor
But he didn't mention it's a slightly reworked Mondeo engine :)
BileMonkey I forgot about the Nobles! Thanks!
it's my birthday I subscribe to car throttle because it's such an awesome Channel
Happy Birthday!!
Car Throttle Thank-you! You guys are awesome and keep up the good work!
Happy Birthday
Oh yeah !!! PHILL absolutly need a V6 :D such an exciting sound
SUPERCHARGE THE V6 TO GET A MINI F TYPE
YES AND TUNE IT TO PUMP OUT OVER 330 BHP WITH ELECTRONIC EXHAUST CUT OUTS AND BEAUTIFUL SOULFULL SOUNDS OF GODS LOVE
What has he been saying the whole fucking video? He doesn't want to force induction anything!
icaro arrigoni He's talking about doing it to Phil.
he wants to put the V6 in Phil not a supercharged V6
K24 or 4g63 would do good work
MishoMods Not really worth the effort, those are transverse engines and the miata is designed for a longitudinal.
peter2011tc I guess, I'm pretty sure he could do whatever he wants though
MishoMods For sure it's his car he can do whatever he wants to it and nobody can tell him not to, it's just that a longitudinal engine would be easier and more cost effective swap.
peter2011tc there are kits to mount the k24 in a longitudinal position in a miata. If i'm not mistaken thesmokingtire filmed one... :)
F20c!
I think Phil wants a Honda K24 transplant.
thats a transverse engine, not impossible but harder to swap
Less Talk, More Delicious more like F20C swap
Less Talk, More Delicious can k24 turn in rwd
GAME ZONE yes, I’ve seen a couple miatas and 86s with k series engines follow @samakhan on instagram he has a k swapped miata
F22c would scream in this car fuck the k24
Jaguar AJ (Jag X-type, same block as a Duratec but with VCT heads), Duratec ST from a Mondeo ST220, Alfa Romeo Busso V6 (Alfa 155), Mazda KL-series 2.0L or 2.5L (Mazda 626, Ford Telstar, Ford Probe), all go very well and sound glorious
Why don't you try an EcoBoost in Phil?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
not the 2.3 V6, im talking about the 1.0L 3 cyl. :p
I want to know if the 2.0 or 2.3 will swap over to any Miata easily
A V8 would too heavy, a alloy V6 is lighter, sounds great, reliable power, great combo
Brian Anthony LS1 is lighter than most v6s and even some 4 cylinders. Lighter transmissions too
@@NatedoggZombies not lighter than the v6 that was fitted. Also the ls1 doesnt rev particularly high which is something you want in a lightweight sportscar for more fun, and one reason why rotaries are still so loved. I get 7.5k rpm in my 2019 mx5 and love jt
PHIL NEEDS A V6
Ever since my friends got into motor bikes in the 90s I've had a dream of an international project to make a v8 engine for the MX. Two big four cylinder motorbike blocks joined into a 90 degree V8! Something with perhaps 250 to 300 HP with the inherent smoothness of a v8 ... that revs and revs. It slots into every model, geez I'd chip in for one of them.
Get a 3.5 V6 from the 350z
Luke Perry or from the godzilla
Do you mean the RB26?
Luke Perry This had my vote. The only question is should he get the de, de rev up, or hr. The HR does look much better, but I'm partial to the revup.
MobaGamingTV no, he means the vq35de
Khoelle Basnight Moba is refering to the motor in the gtr.
You could always put a Honda k20/k24 into it... easy power
Griffin Mackenzie yesssssssss
Griffin Mackenzie and magically make it drive the rear wheels?
John Rine kits are available to hook the k series up to the stock Miata transmission
wouldn't an F20 be better for a rwd car?
SR20 or a K24, either would be the best options. Large aftermarket options, cheap repairs, good reliability, and many many many people who know a lot about the two engines. Id lean towards SR20 because i like nissan more, but that doesnt mean the K24 isnt an awesome engine. They both are literally Legos and you can build these within weeks if you have all the parts.
I've been wanting to see a 1JZ in an NA MX5 for quite a while... 1JZ in Phil maybe?
As the owner of a 2007 V6 Honda Accord, I always thought the engine was great. Today I put two and two together and realized that a Miata with a J30A5 engine would be great. Hopefully I can go through with it this summer and onwards
Damn, I'm early! Gotta think of a joke...
Uh... My bright green Daewoo Matiz. Yup, that oughta do it.
RandomGuitarGuy Hahahahahahaha good one 😅
:D yep that one is killer
Just buy a brand new MX5, no one on RUclips is rolling one that I know of and I know you got deep pockets thanks to Car Throttle, hell, make them pay part of it for you since it will be on their channel!
Acc0rd79 He actually owns a ND
But it´s 1.5.
Chills. Actual goosebumps all over hearing that engine. It's like a tiny super car. I want one...bad
Put a BMW straight 6 in phil, or better... put Collin's straight 6 in phil.
Don't think that fits unfortunately
the 335i engine
get an e39 540i v8 engine into it
Straight 6 could fit ... but it would hang over the front axle a good bit and just make the car plow like mofo.
lol u have to strech the front of an Miata for that Monster😂
Do a j35 vtec engine!!!!!
J35a8 to be exact
yes J series.
Definitely would agree
Give me the link to buy the v6 kit for Mazda NA!
www.rocketeerltd.com/
This is unique. I remember when I met you in Monterey at cannery row and you were telling me all about your fantasies in regards to putting a BMW V6 in Phil. This is a close second to a BMW I would say! Your affection for this car was evident haha.
incoming "ls swap it bro" and "rb26dett is best engine" fuck boys are here.
Says the person with a car that's better with either those 2.
Rotaries stay in the RX. Otherwise you just have something boring.
just needs to replace the rotary with a K24 Supercharged swap, and it will be complete.
throw in 2j
+Amun TOO anything but a trash rotary, more of an ls guy but I fuck with Honda motors too. They don't need to be rebuilt every 70k miles like rotaries 😂
mate why would you cheat on Phil?!
he's not cheating on Phil
he's *gifting* Phil
but he was with another pretty lady in this video xD
Does anybody think that there is a hint of ferrari enzo noise in that v6 ?
What a beautiful little car. A crazy conversion but brilliantly done.
everyone's like "2jz!" "v8!" "bmw e46 inline 6!" "rb26!" and I'm just like go rotary! yeah it might not be as reliable and efficient but fuck it who doesn't love a bridge port rotary idle! even an N/A rotary would be sick and it would be reliable as if taken care of right
Luke M what about everyone like LS RB26 2JZ and me like Tesla Model S engine with twin supercharger
people are so blinded by the v8. A v8 is common for someone who doesnt know an engine, because they think thats what all sports cars have.
Jesper Danielsson Yes V6s are definitely underrated. I for one prefer the sound of a Lotus Exige over that of a modern Porsche 911.
@@minchang4057 doesn't an exige have a 4 cylinder???
Makes me seem weird then. I would like a V8 under a Miata, but not an LS.
Something along the lines of a modern Ford DFV. Or two Honda K20s arranged in a V8 configuration. Or Judd racing... The list goes on.
I wanna hear this car scream.
All the good ones 😂
Phil needs a Lamborghini v12 engine :D
I know very little about cars but still love watching these videos.
can u turbo it. please get one and turbo it if possible
RedPandaBits they did but their car isnt reliable
I think that you didn't understood the clip
TimSkater no wonder since he was running 250 on stock internals and those engines are good for about 210, you're pushing it if you try and get more without upgrading things, no wonder it blew up
im talking about the V6 :\ i wanna see V6 Turbo
nahh n/a is great and 240 hp or what it was is more than enough for a MX5
I wonder if a 5 cylinder would fit in there?
If a 6 did I would think a 5 would
Volvo s60 t5 with 300hp with converting engine into rwd would be awesome in that
Phil should have a twin turbo v10
FerrariPista 12 he should have a rolls Royce V12
How about putting a flat 6 NA engine from a 911 in Phil?
Samarth Patel but it already sounds like a Porsche anyway.
