      +InBoostWeTrust7MGTE It seemed to me that he, for lack of a better term "sandbagged" the lap in the miata.
      The comments about the braking, or the perceived lack of braking made it seem that he maybe blew it on purpose.

    • @jcb0249
      @jcb0249 8 лет назад +16

      Yeah, it is called "sand bagging" Purposely lifting, or not braking hard enough because you've made prejudgements about the brakes.
      He even made a statement (starting at 5:20) to the fact that he didn't trust, or think the brakes were as good as the boxter, He (imo) may not have known to what extent the brake upgrade was, or maybe just under estimated the braking power. I've taken courses at Bondurant, and Frank Hawley. I do know something about fast driving, mainly because I DO IT. Not just sit and throw insults when My ass gets chapped over an internet comment. Come back with some numbers then we can talk. Or keep on being twelve years old and living in your moms basement playing NFS and thinking that it makes you qualified to comment to grown ups.

    • @jcb0249
      @jcb0249 8 лет назад +6

      And I'm sorry if "Sand bagging" was taken as meaning "Cheating" in this instance.
      I meant it as he may have been...lets say worried, about maybe putting the car into the gravel, or maybe even into a barrier. It is a co-workers vehicle after all. So I was thinking maybe he lifted prematurely, or drove more conservatively than he would in the more proven platform (boxter).

    Big difference is the tire widths. The Porsche is running 235x45r18 compared to the 195x45r15 on the MX5. There is 15% more rubber on the road for the Porsche, so no surprises that it was more stable and faster through the corners. I think the MX5 looked like more fun though!

    • @VideoDotGoogleDotCom
      @VideoDotGoogleDotCom Год назад +1

      How did you come up with that 15%? The width alone is over than 20% more than that of the Mazda tires.

    • @jrod1577
      @jrod1577 Год назад +3

      We both are 8 years too late but the miata tire size chosen is not a good size for track driving. Its usually a 205 width for miatas that want to see track time and road use. Anything smaller is usually for being cheap or drifting as we saw.
      Putting to the side that its a common practice to make one product look bad to make another product look better than it actually is, the miata driver was driving really bad. Regarding the driver, if you know you have less grip, obviously you match your speed to the tire's limits instead of drifting each corner each time thinking itll grip better next time. He did it so many times that its no wonder he had a slower time.
      If he actually slowed down to prevent traction loss, he would have actually reduced his time a few seconds too. Im very confident in that.

    • @homerl7
      @homerl7 16 дней назад

      @@jrod1577 Yeap, can confirm. I use my Miata as a daily but I usually go for track days too. I was using 195 tyres for quite some time. When I finally had the budget and bought new wheels I had to go for 205 width tyres and the difference is huge. I was thinking that it's just one step up from 195 so it's not a big upgrade. But my NB loves the 205 tyre width. Seriously, I regret spending money on other modifications and not going earlier for wheels and tyres. My dad is like "young and dumb, you didn't want to upgrade the only thing that touches the asphalt on a track day car, you preferred center console delete and a short shifter"😂

    For the love of God, that thing was on ice, what do you expect with aggressive street tread 195's with nearly 200hp. Specs run 205 and have about 120-130 hp. Should have saved a couple bucks on the happy meal, grabbed a cheaper clutch and got some 205 dot semi Slick take offs. Or upped the budget by a grand and got 15x8 6ul's, take off 225 Nt01's or R888 (in place of the slicks I just mentioned) and the 949 sway bar kit.
    That Porsche has 265's in the rear and 235's up front. Making up a total of 39.34 inches of rubber just under 10 inches more then the Miata's 30. Sure it weighs more, has another 50 hp but it also has on board traction and stability control systems.
    I'd like to see that Miata with some more rubber and properly tuned sway bars. That would make that for a very viable weapon.

    Superchargers are wonderful; I owned a Corrado G60 for some years in Germany and I absolutely loved it! Docile and calm around town, very controllable and easy on country roads, and never seemed as quick as it was; Often passing other cars there was no need to downshift; just press the pedal down and a glorious long surge would grab the car like a big hand and shove you along; no screaming engine, no big body-roll, just a calm, efficient and lovely performance. Taking my girlfriend down to the cinema in Nürnberg where they showed movies in the original versions, we often broke 200km/h on the way... lovely.. I miss that car. Picked it up at the Karmann factory in Osnabrück with my dad when he bought it in '90 I believe. We toured the museum as they finished our car...

      Slightly better in terms of luxury, unless your 6ft a miata is a comfy little car, and handling, you can get a Miata to handle better than a boxster if you put some money into it, equipment wise there's bells and whistles to them both, but I could care less about a radio and a bunch of doo-das, safety wise it all depends on the wreck or accident, reliability a Miata is a more reliable car that will run into less issues and is a large amount lees to work on and fix, and a boxter which is pretty much the cheapest newer model porsche is $35-40k more than a miata. I think I'd rather buy a Miata before I'd even consider buying a porsche boxster. Not to mention I know a woman with a Porsche boxster and she would rather drive her other cars and doesn't seem to care for it as much as you'd think. All together if you buy a Miata, and put $10K into it you'll have a more reliable, and way cheaper car. But hey, if you got the money, you can do whatever you want, I'd say get a 911 turbo way before get a porsche boxter. Also a 1.8l Miata, and then a 2.7l porsche, and the Miata almost got the same time. So really it's kind of a personal opinion on what you'd rather have.

    For the average owner, the Miata will take the prize. If for no other reason than the "Smile Factor"
    I have a '90 (1.6l) with 14Kmiles (you read that right) that i picked up for $1,800USD (with hard top) 2 years ago from a couple of 80yr olds in FL. Thet had been using it as a shelf in the garage. I spent $2,500USD to get it on the road. So the total was $4,300USD for a road worthy car.
    I also have a '13 Boxster, cost $60K USD. The car ia a dream to drive. My only complaint is it could use a back up camera because of the high rear end.
    When you factor in the cost of the car and maitenance, I'll give the prize to the Miata.
    I don't mind pushing the car that cost $5KUSD hard. The $60K Boxster comes off as a great luxury GT.
    Then figure in $50(Miata) vs $250(Boxster) for an oil change, $75(M) vs $500(B) for a tire....................

      Sounds like you've got the best of both worlds! I had thought about selling my miata ($4000 USD) and save up for a Porsche Cayman. Looks like it makes a lot more sense for me to keep the miata for fun drive/track day and buy the Cayman for daily and occasional spirited drive to keep the overall maintenance cost down.

    • @ejcheck
      @ejcheck 9 лет назад +2

      That would be the way to go if you're trying to keep expenses down and fun level high. That track day in the Cayman adds up in routine maintenance costs, then add in the longer term maintenance like clutch and brakes...... The Porsche is not a cheap car to keep on the road. If your Goal FUN and you're a weekend warrior not a pro, the Miata would be my choice. And don't misunderstand I LOVE my Boxter. To give you one more example of the Porsche expense: I had a small understood trim clip go missing, a piece that should cost $.99, Porshe doesn't make the clip available (it just slides into a small receiver) and you have to replace the whole panel $250. The dealer was doing it under warranty, or it would not have been done, the new panel came in broken. The dealer let me slide out both clips before taking the panel back. All were happy in the end.

      PS I should have checked first….more like 25% heavier. My mistake, but still 25% is
      quite a bit. One also has to wonder if those hp figures were dyno'ed since 196 hp from
      a Sebring Supercharger is very much on the high side (one assumes extra big pulleys
      and boost, but wonders about engine management etc to support it…not a strong suit
      of the Sebring setup). Fun vid though!

    You guys should totally do a part three to this series, just to see how much more it costs to meet or exceed the Boxsters lap time. I have no doubt the Miata can do it, but the pertinent question is "for how much"? I'd be willing to bet with just a slightly wider tire, you'd make up a ton of time if not the majority of it. I run 195s on my mostly stock 1.8 and it will still get loose in 2nd and 3rd gear. Also EBC brake pads aren't particularly great. Next time go with Hawk.

    Larger wheels for larger discs would've helped massively, maybe even something like a ducktail spoiler to slightly improve rear traction at those speeds. Personally though I'd fit braces over the engine, under the body and nearer the boot for ridgetity (earlier mx5s didn't get any bracing)

    MX5 is oversteering more then it needs to be . The car might benefit from a staggered tire set, 1 size wider in the back. A thinner rear anti-roll bar would also help to get the MX5 more planted at the back.

    Good video, wish there were more MX5 vs Z3 vs 986 track battle videos! As far as the "drifting" comments, the driver seemed to be pushing both cars and tires to the limits; didn't look like drifting to me. I keep my Miata NA stock because every time I've checked it's very time consuming and more expensive to bring it up to Boxster standards than to buy a used Boxster...and you still wouldn't have the finesse, balance, and class of a Porsche. I think the Miata is the most fun when you're rolling the chassis and sliding around on stock tires and suspension; they spent millions designing it to be just that, just the way it is! Personally, and owning all three, the Z3 is the most "fun" on mountain roads near the Smokies! The Boxster is a little too good, like a slot car; and the Miata can't power out of corners up the mountain, and has a little to much give and sliding coming down. But any one of them is great. I'm guessing a Lotus Elise would beat them all on a mountain road. I test drove one, but not in the twisties.

    Why on earth didn't they fit PROPER wheels and tires to the MX5??? Lightweight 15x9's with 225 width extreme summer tires easily generate 1.2 lateral G's which would have easily whooped up on the Porsche.

    Nice to see some in the UK are now quoting rwhp (which is what a chassis dyno measures) and not extrapolating crank bhp and quoting it as gospel.
    Would be interesting to perform the same experiment using a TorSen LSD, bigger braked (including ABS), wider tyred 2001 onwards Sport model fitted with upgraded suspension bushes and a decent set of anti-roll bars (e.g. 1.125” hollow front, 12mm rear).

  • @Trendyflute
    @Trendyflute 9 лет назад +4

    Heh, pretty charming. I wonder if the suspension tuning on the Miata could be fettled with further to make it less pushy-slidey in corners, it looked like it took a lot of correction to do. I know it got springs/shocks and an alignment, probably corner-weighted as well, but did someone go in and adjust all the damping across the corners? (assuming they're adjustable). What can be done with some sway bar tuning now? And how much better of a chassis would it be with some under-car braces? Miatas are notoriously flexy, and stiffening the suspension on 'em tends to just make the body twist and distort instead.
    Of course, then there's also the fact that you can really see where your money goes in the Porsche. It goes to that last 10-20% of tuning, calibration, and refinement that makes it come together and perform so well.

      Yes, I couldn't agree more! The NB MX5 has torsional rigidity range of ~5,200 to 5,500 Nm/deg (not good) versus 987 Boxster (12,600 which is ok for a convertible). 987 cayman is 31,500 which is excellent! Interestingly a Mazda RX8 is 30,000 and the equivalent convertible, ie. NC MX5 is 8,132. It shows that convertibles are not the answer! My brother's MX5 had the full bracing kit from Flying Miata which helped a bit but I think a full cage is the answer

    Consider the HUGE difference in design intent between the two cars (the mazda prioritises fun, engagement, simplicity and low weight and was cheap-ish, the boxster is about min-maxing performance with luxury and premium perception with high tech and costs a lot), the massive time gap in design (mk2 mx5 is really more like a facelifted mk1, which is was designed in the 80s). Consider all that, and 2.5s difference with such basic upgrades is pretty impressive.

    Two simple things would've made this a lot closer: 1. Sway bars are incredibly cheap but effective, accounting for at least a half-second here. 2. Miatas can take huge rubber and proper 225/45 sized tires (vs. 195's!) would've easily dropped over a second more. Yes, those require 15x8 or 15x9 wheels but they're readily available and would even up this match nicely.

    I know this is a old video but why don’t you just get lighter wheels and lighter and stiffer sway bars? That on top of stripping off some weight might help shave off a second off the lap. Also strut tower bars/braces and lower arm bars/braces will help stiffen up the chasis to kill body roll in the turns without having to resort to a full roll cage. Rear roll bars on a miata are a must thought, they will save your head if you ever flip.
