CORRECTION: the Atrazine study I mentioned has been discredited. The point still stands that while Alex Jones was using a flawed study the cause, if the study were true, would be capitalists destroying the environment for profit and not the NWO feminizing us but also no one is turning the frogs gay.

    • @damien1358
      @damien1358 3 года назад +66

Thanks for the correction. Pesticides are the target for a lot of conspiracy theories and misinformation campaigns from all sides. It doesn't help that the corporations that manufacture them have a lot of lobbying money and power behind them. They are also used irresponsibly by the agricultural industry, and can cause serious harm to the environment, no doubt.
However, they can also be used for ecological restoration, to kill invasive species. These plants impose demonstrable harm on some of the most ecologically valuable ecosystems on earth, which we rely on these ecosystems for carbon exchange and other ecological services. They can cause soil erosion, increase fire risk, reduce water quality, and create monocultures that crowd out native plants, trees, and animals. Plants are only deemed invasive if they can spread rapidly, establish well, have few predators, cause harm to the environment, and are difficult to kill. Some of these species are so successful that can only be removed via repeated pesticide application.
This is one of many environmental topics the left doesn't tend to completely understand, in my experience. I haven't really seen any other lefttubers tackle environmentalism, climate change, or ecology. You should consider looking into it if this kind of thing interests you. I think your videos are very engaging and informative, and I really appreciate what you're doing here.
Here's an article about an invasive plant where I live that also has history tied to eugenics. www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/08/29/491797791/the-strange-twisted-story-behind-seattles-blackberries

Something to add to the discussion: when it comes to actual, real-world conspiracies, they weren't unraveled by conspiracy theorists. Conspiracy theorists have yet to unravel an actual conspiracy theory. They tend to come frustratingly close to getting the point, but ultimately wind up missing it, as you demonstrate in your video. Watergate wasn't revealed by conspiracy theorists, but by a pair of hard-working journalists working for an actual, legitimate paper who followed where the evidence was leading them and wound up bringing down a president.

@@alia.1041 Well, the 'real' truth about race is that it is more of a social construction. There are some little things in phenotypic variation, like where people with lighter skin produce vitamin D better, but at the expense of having a higher risk of skin cancer, or that African-Americans (specifically) don't respond as well to Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (See the drug BiDil).
However, there's no shortage of crackpots who will try to contact you to try to affirm some sort of 'scientific racism' based on intellectual capacity, or will accuse you of being in on a conspiracy when you tell them Genetic Diversity preserves the stability of a species. The more ethnically homogeneous a group is, the more genetic diseases will occur (Inbreeding depression).
This topic is how I found this channel (and Shaun). They do easily digestible explanations and save me the time of explaining it myself. They also helped me understand it better from a cultural and historical perspective. I think people look to Genetics because its the Dunning-Kruger 'Mount Everest' for them.
Most 'American white men' in that conspiratorial thinking don't want to hear the fact that what they call 'racial mixing' can be far more healthy than being with someone who looks like you. They get so 'hurt' hearing it, that they will go out of their way to find ways to attack you just for telling them the truth they can't accept because they refuse to learn. I wish they would study the psychology of insecurity and anger, rather than trying to understand genetics...

I've always said that if there's just *one* thing you learn from Marx's work, it should be that human lives are ruled and influenced primarily by systems, not by individuals. Marx's work, and in particular his analysis of class conflict, is an antidote to conspiratorial thinking because it provides rational explanations for the socioeconomic changes that we observe throughout history. This is something that the right, with its rabid obsession with pseudo-scientific race theory and liberalism, with its obsession with individualism, simply cannot engage with because both mandate that the only way to view history is through those narrow perspectives. When a collective movement created by material conflict appears, fascists and liberals alike can only attempt to rationalise these events within the constraints of their existing worldview, leading to conspiracy ("There must be a reason for these events, and it must be the evil intentions of "). This materialist perspective on history (and the explanations it reveals) is the primary reason, I believe, that Marx continues to be relevant to this day when the names of so many other thinkers of his time are reduced to footnotes in history books.

I think individual will is relevant insofar as the interactions of individuals constitute the fabric of both society and history, with innumerable lives constituting something far more complex and chaotic than any grand narrative, whether in the tradition of Marx or Engels or of the Counter-Enlightenment conspiracists, can possibly quantify. But even ignoring that there is transparently a feedback loop between the individuals within a society and the society which consists of them which cannot be accounted for purely on a personal level, let alone the natural world in which our species exists (and which we are damaging in increasingly dangerous ways), that final point is the relevant part: Conspiracy theories simplify the world to avoid addressing the complexities of human experience, instead forcing history and current events to fit their dualistic conception of transcendental truth. If any hackneyed psychoanalytic comparison is to be drawn, it's splitting.

this is definitely reductive in some ways, but when race was first being used legally (as in white, black etc, rather than a synonym for nationality), it literally just replaced the word "christian". the "wrong" people (african slaves and indigenous americans) were converting to christianity and demanding rights as christians, so they changed the law to say white rather than christian. of course, this isn't to equate the usage of those laws with antisemitism, but to draw a historical line throughout european history that considers christitanity white and whiteness christian. jews are the archetypical "non-christians" for most of christian european history, so we have the longest history as a sizable population of The Other(tm), in addition to the whole christ-killer nonsense. i wouldn't call it antisemitism in the modern sense, but anti-jewish sentiment is literally written into the christian bible at every turn, and while it may have started as a rivalry among equals at time of writing, once christianity gained dominance, you have a built-in scapegoat culturally. so in every generation, when european conservatives reach into their history for the bad guy, they will find their great-grandpa's peers blaming jews, and the longer history goes on without this being thoroughly addressed, the more examples they have.

It only gets more bizarre that there is a historical precedent for a conspiracy to popularize a prototype of moderns anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. "The Plot (protocols of the elders of Zion)" was essentially plagiarized from an earlier publication and repurposed to be about Jewish people taking over and spoiling everyone else's day.
If you like comic book essays as much as video ones, Will Eisner published a good one that's _also_ called "The Plot." (You can also find non-comic-book versions of this story, of course. I just figured I'd mention it since it's likely to pop up while researching the much more shitty book. Similar title and all that.)

Another note on anti-semitism and conspiracy theories, is that people often forget and are lied to about how old they are. Anti-semitism was a thing before hitler or the concept of Europe were born by thousands of years which leads to people misinterpreting anti-jewishness in multiple forms of media and people (take Tangled the movie's Mother Gothel or Harley Quinn the Animated Series's landlord and ex wife) as normal and harmless bc we beat the nazis already. Also a ton of anti-semetic jokes made about Bernie Sanders.

There was a lot of fighting in the early church about whether Jesus was fully human, or if he was god on earth only seeming to be human, or something in between. Good ol' Homoiousios debates about made up ideas! If you've ever seen the picture of Jesus where one half of his face is chill and the other half is Very Angry, that's hypostatic unio. But to translate my poem: "we believe the hypostatic union; wherein we find a church's doctrine on what is or is not god as proof on; our belief that jesus is both fully human and mortal, and fully god and omnipotent; and he's all that at once and no we won't explain this union of wildly different concepts.

Also, the idea that we’re in hell... “Bob” came up with that... the world ended in 1998 and since then we’ve all been living in hell on Earth, according to his very fallible and probably wrong teachings. Way back in the day, you couldn't look stuff up on the internet and see all the pros, cons, and debunkment within a paragraph. You had to find a day to go the public library and spend hours searching for books that had been mentioned by somebody cool. And books were either pro, con, or debunkment and were separate and self-contained. They weren't all summarized together in a paragraph under a quivering bloodshot eye-on-the-pyramid gif. Each book had to be found and assessed for credibility, but since these kind of books weren't talked about on regular media, was hard to vet. And the difficulty of the search sometimes gave the ideas more weight, and made you wonder who was supressing this knowledge! So, taking much longer to travel through society then and being hard to find, caused some to treat these ideas in a more reverant secretive way --- which is very different than today, where you can find out anything you want, quickly, and are able to judge and condemn ideas faster.
But also, today's world is completely insane.
So it's kind of interesting to an armchair social scientist.
