I like to throw a double fluke rig. I tie about a 1 foot leader on a swivel and a hook. I slide that over my line and then tie on another hook. The fluke in front kind of jumps side to side, when a bass eats the front fluke, the fish will run up the line, and that creates an erratic action on the back fluke. I have doubled up many many times! Great video Matt.
I actually started using this rig last summer with a lot of success. However…I lost my PB (over 9lbs) because I had the unfortunate opportunity to hook up 2 fish at once. One was over 9lbs and the other was very close to 8lbs….HEART BROKE..
I'm having great luck with the hover rigs Matt. We don't have any lakes where I farm in west central Indiana, so I've waded a little creek near us called Mud Pine, which is only 20-30' wide most everywhere. I waded this afternoon for a couple of hours and caught 5 smallies from 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. and about a dozen smaller ones. All on a 3/64 hover rig and a green pumpkin and chartreuse Hula Tickler. The amazing thing was I caught all the fish on a single hover rig and the same Tickler, and I was probably snagged 30 times in addition. That invention of yours is the real deal!
I told this kid to throw a fluke Weightless in this grass patch at my old neighborhood pond. He caught a 7.2 largemouth bass. The kid was so excited and he had his mom there taking pics of him and his fish. He was like, " this is the biggest friggin fish I've ever seen! "
Probably my favourite bait to use. They get bites when most other baits won’t. The two retrieves I use the most are super slow twitching at targets, and more of a regular jerkbait type retrieve. I do at times skitter it across the top of the water from time to time depending on the time of day, or the type of cover I’m around. Thick grass I will either let it sink in holes, or skitter it across. They both work great. I love letting it sink in holes and all of a sudden the line starts peeling. It’s awesome. Lol
I like just a couple of rod tip twitches just to get the fluke to achieve a side to side action and let it sit for a few seconds then twitch it....yeah, like the walk the dog....(commenting as I watch the video) lol. Yeah just like your saying
Matt, Im late to the game here on flukes. I used to never co sider them and was kind of intimidating ( if you will ) to fish it. Just this week, I ordered some and bought some locally, and I have to say your retreaval videos are fantastic ! Ever since Ive watched other tutorials by you, you are my go to to learn stuff like this. Thank you, sir. I have to say I have success every time. Again, thank you.
Love all your different retrieves you show us . Very educational videos Matt. Your the best . Of all colors i guess it depends on water clarity + weather conditions too. I wish you would of shown us your favorite color fluke like you showed us your favorite color hard jerkbaits. Bluish purple back transparent body with bone design on it + chartreuse belly . Great video again.
I just started using the Fluke this year and I have to tell ya, I love it. I like it better than hard jerk baits ! Thanks and I just learned a couple of extra retreaves.
I really like using a fluke-style bait! Caffeine Shad is probably my favorite because of how soft and dense they are. They also skip as good as a wacky rig so they make great baits when teaching someone how to skip. There's just so many ways you can use them and they can even make a great trailer for bladed jigs and other types of baits.
Awesome, really appreciate the herring lake tip!! That’s what I fish. Haven’t had much luck on the fluke, just followers. But I’ve been doing a jerk, jerk, pause. Didn’t know about the sweep! Will try it tomorrow! Thank you, Sir. God Bless.
@chickenmessiah Thanks! I still throw both. Sometimes, the fish just want one and not the other. I like the weighted ones that are a bluegill pattern in clearer water.
Nice video. The Zoom flukes are my favourite lures and I mostly use them with texas rig but with a fixed weight. It works good. My favourite retrieves are slow ones, near the botom, but it has happened to get them when retrieving faster for the next cast. Cheers!
The best Fluke guy I've ever known fished it like an "I-Motion" bait...super slow and straight back. He absolutely killed with it. No one else was doing it and it paid off HUGE.
Great demonstration. One of my favorite ways is to throw it out in about 20 feet of water and let it sink. Some of my most violent strikes on a fluke happened this way. I like orange flukes here in California, they seem to work for me. Matt thank you for keeping it real.
Just got on a killer fluke bite the other day. Got em fired up on the long sweep. Put a 3/16 tungsten nail weight in the throat to keep it down and dipped the tail into some jj's magic. Went through bags. Turned off the electronics, dropped the anchor, and sat on em for 2 hours. One after another after another. Took pics of each one, and ended up with 78. Mostly 3s and 4s. Epic day.
Great video. Thanks. Love to see a follow up on open hook rigging/retrieves if you're up for it. I love to nose hook them with a hitchhiker, but I fish them like a spook. Always open to other suggestions. Also been catching lots of fish on a super fluke junior with a hover rig this summer.
I really enjoyed this video. I use soft jerkbaits a lot and have always used them for jigging like the bait is dying. I didn't know you could fish it like this. I fish for walleye and i am trying this.
Gambler is coming out with a weighted hook like the core tackle ones. Just putting it out there. I’m sure they aren’t the only ones working on it. Y’all stay true to Matt and Johnny! 🙌🏽
Well you just hit on a bait that I need to get some confidence with, I dont fish it near enough to get good with it but after seeing this video I am going to work on it some more!!!
Yeap the sweep & pause as I call it is great on herring lakes, Clarks hill, Russell, Murray. I usually throw it on a belly weighted swimbait hook with screw lock keeper . That was baits last way longer & with weighted hook you can fish it deeper & faster. Which is what they seem to like a lot of the time. Or a double weighted fluke rig also. I love a fluke! I love the zoom fluke, zman jerk shadz/streakz,and my go to is the googan dart. Don’t ignore the googan dart. I swear it’s one of the bests. Durability is decent but the big deal for me is the hook slot and the tail. I think the anatomically correct tails are by far the best because it allows the fluke to have more erratic action but when you jerk it and jet the slack back to the bait it will turn around like it’s facing the bass. Sorta like a glide bait
Really good tips. I feel like at 40 I don’t fish as many different methods and I know there are plenty of other things I can do when the bite gets scarce.

Local pond I go to the most is very weed/grassy and few packs flukes is basically all i bring there and have killed it this year. I basically mix up the last 2 retrieves
My fluke/soft jerkbait rod is a st croix medium so pretty (soft/mod-mojo yak) spinning rod but it just gives me more whip to sling that thing back under all the trees and bushes. 10 lb flouro and I’ve never had an issue missing fish and I just feel like there’s more sensitivity with a softer tip.

Hey Matt. - just a request for a future you tube. My lake has about 30 man installed telephone piling stumps with brush added. Most are in 8-12 feet of water. Would like advice on how to approach fishing them - Toss a worm right at the piling and let fall, or throw past and bounce across the bottom. Shade side vs sunny side, etc. I want my presentation to be the best it can be vs others fishing the same spots. Thks.
I put a very small split shot on the hook, where it sits inside the bait. Gives me a little bit faster sink and the further towards the tail I can go, the bait will still sink but it levels it out and causes the unpredictable fall
Thanks for the great information Matt. I went on TW to purchase some Super Flukes but couldnt find the Methiolate color. Where an I get that color Fluke. I have methiolate worms but cant find in the Flukes.
Matt, do you ever nose-hook your flukes with a CPS spring? I do if weeds aren’t too dense. But in my local ponds I have to T-rig 90% of time due to heavy summer weeds. And great tip on 4/0 hook! I’ve been using 3/0 and missing fish like you mentioned. Will try larger hook and see if it helps.
Another great video! Thanks Matt! I sometimes like to make the fluke a line-through and put a #4 treble in the top of it for open water type situations.
Thanks Matt, you forgot to say it's one off the funest ways to catch bass. Do you have any experience with the 7" or bigger flukes? The only thing I do different is I use a swivel to leader. Great way to cover grass flats.
Would love to send you some variations on the fluke that I sell. So far we've been told they'll catch fish consistently when standard soft jerkbait aren't getting bit.
My confidence bait type. I prefer a Yammamoto D shad on presentations where you are pausing the bait to let it sink. It "swims" and wiggles like a wacky rigged senko when rigged Texas style. Want to: 1. Double your bites? 2. Catch fish behind people on high pressure bodies of water? 3. Fish deeper water faster and more thoroughly? Answer: FREE RIG it! Exact same rigging as shown in the video. 4/0 Texas... with a 1/8 oz. closed eye cylindrical drop shop weight. It's still a reaction bite on the Free rig. As the free rigged D shad sinks the 1/8oz weight separates and the bait sinks rapidly. When the 1/8 weight hits the bottom the D shad stalls and then "swims" or "shimmies" to the bottom. Active fish and suspended fish will follow it down. As they are following when the weight hits the bottom the magic happens. The bait stalls right in their face...it triggers them. 9 times out of 10 you will never feel the bite. They just have it. The bass will hold it and swim with it. Great technique for young or novice anglers. ON behalf of the community: Thanks Matt for another quality technique video.
Feel like retrieves , and casting abilities is two I’ve the most important parts of bass fishing, I’m so bad at walking the big berkley spook type bait . I just can’t make that bait look good enough to get bit. I see you do some of that action with the fluke, it’s a little more irratic though not as smooth as a glide bait, or a spook bait . If you could give me the best tips to help me walk the dog on that spool one day I’d appreciate it. Is there a training wheels set up . Lol
I’m gonna use that fluke on your hover rig , on rocks big rocks where normally it gets snagged but with that weight attached to the hook shank it will not nose dive and get hung like a jig head does , jig head gets snagged cause of the way it falls , it nose dives , but the hover will not hang up
Do you happen to know how much line that reel retrieves in per 1 full turn? Im struggling with techniques because my spinning is faster that my baitcaster. I think its about 25 inches of line per turn on my spinning, and half that on my baitcaster. So its definitely a struggle to remember at times
I just noticed that you cast with your right hand then switch to your left for the retrieve. I started doing that recently because of chronic pain in my right arm. I cast much better with my right and just kept the rod on the right side. Wondering if you have similar pain and how you manage it.
Good stuff @MattStefan. For some reason I would say I'm a novice throwing hard jerkbaits ; but I STINK at throwing flukes.must be over working the bait.i dunno
I’ve done well dead sticking a watermelon red flake fluke on the bottom. Not the most fun way to catch’em but extreme situations require extreme measures. 😂😂
Matt what power and action Rod do you throw flukes on at Okeechobee or in Florida with heavy hydrilla? I’m using a Phenix Feather 7’1 MH but it’s more of a light mh and thinking about going to a heavy I use braid to flourocarbon leader with a ringed EWG hook and flukes are killer around the spawn down here
I like to throw a double fluke rig.

Stick a small rattle in it too!
Fluke is a good bait for a follow up when you miss the strike on a buzzbait....they will hit that fluke after they miss that buzzbait
Works great
I love these retrieve videos. I always learn something new. Really appreciate it!
Glad you like them!
Thanks!

You got that right!

Thanks Matt. I like tandem fluke rigs.
they work great!
Great on the water retrieve tip video. Great to have in the arsenal!
thanks!
How would you fish this fluke stlye bait differently from the oldie but still goodie, Sluggo?
i would fish it similar
Best bait ever! I throw it 3/4 of the time. Last year dead sticking worked the best, but sometimes in clear water they like it farting around.
@chickenmessiah Thanks! I still throw both. Sometimes, the fish just want one and not the other. I like the weighted ones that are a bluegill pattern in clearer water.
Love this video. ND boy heading to MN this weekend and going to try it out. Thanks for the tips!
good luck!
Great video!!! Thanks for sharing those tips. Learn some new retrieves that I will try for sure!!Stay Safe & God Bless!!!

I like using a standard hard jerkbait cadence with a weightless caffeine shad. Always helps get more fish in the boat

Rigging it with your hover rig gives it insane action with the tiniest twitch of the rod.
a fluke on a hover rig is killer!
Great tips! Love fishing flukes. Assuming this techniques work with slug-go’s as well? They’re old school but still work
Yes they do
The best Fluke guy I've ever known fished it like an "I-Motion" bait...super slow and straight back. He absolutely killed with it. No one else was doing it and it paid off HUGE.

Used a Fluke in a BFL on Pool 5 a couple years ago and would let it fall off the edges of pads and the bass were killing it. Such a fun lure to fish.

it helps prevent line twist

It's still a reaction bite on the Free rig. As the free rigged D shad sinks the 1/8oz weight separates and the bait sinks rapidly. When the 1/8 weight hits the bottom the D shad stalls and then "swims" or "shimmies" to the bottom. Active fish and suspended fish will follow it down. As they are following when the weight hits the bottom the magic happens. The bait stalls right in their face...it triggers them. 9 times out of 10 you will never feel the bite. They just have it. The bass will hold it and swim with it. Great technique for young or novice anglers.
ON behalf of the community: Thanks Matt for another quality technique video.
thanks for sharing!
Would u fish this bait a few weeks after ice out when water still cold?
Yes
Feel like retrieves , and casting abilities is two I’ve the most important parts of bass fishing, I’m so bad at walking the big berkley spook type bait . I just can’t make that bait look good enough to get bit. I see you do some of that action with the fluke, it’s a little more irratic though not as smooth as a glide bait, or a spook bait . If you could give me the best tips to help me walk the dog on that spool one day I’d appreciate it. Is there a training wheels set up . Lol
thanks for sharing!
I’m gonna use that fluke on your hover rig , on rocks big rocks where normally it gets snagged but with that weight attached to the hook shank it will not nose dive and get hung like a jig head does , jig head gets snagged cause of the way it falls , it nose dives , but the hover will not hang up
awesome!
Do you happen to know how much line that reel retrieves in per 1 full turn? Im struggling with techniques because my spinning is faster that my baitcaster. I think its about 25 inches of line per turn on my spinning, and half that on my baitcaster. So its definitely a struggle to remember at times
My guess is it’s about double that for both
I just noticed that you cast with your right hand then switch to your left for the retrieve. I started doing that recently because of chronic pain in my right arm. I cast much better with my right and just kept the rod on the right side. Wondering if you have similar pain and how you manage it.
i use both right and left handed reels. just so happened to be the one I grabbed for the video
Good stuff @MattStefan. For some reason I would say I'm a novice throwing hard jerkbaits ; but I STINK at throwing flukes.must be over working the bait.i dunno
sounds good!
I’ve done well dead sticking a watermelon red flake fluke on the bottom. Not the most fun way to catch’em but extreme situations require extreme measures. 😂😂
awesome!
What kind of reel is that in the video?
abu garcia revo MGX
Matt what power and action Rod do you throw flukes on at Okeechobee or in Florida with heavy hydrilla? I’m using a Phenix Feather 7’1 MH but it’s more of a light mh and thinking about going to a heavy I use braid to flourocarbon leader with a ringed EWG hook and flukes are killer around the spawn down here
Medium heavy fast action
@@MattStefanFishing Thank you Matt
Put a Switch Blade on it! 😋 (Not for TUSH! Matt was pulling my leg 🦵💨🍭)

Yo, Matt do you only fish the whites or do you work in the greens? Thanks for the help...
