AITA For Embarrassing My SIL After She Expected Me To Pay Her And Her Friends Bill?
    -----
At a recent family dinner, I found myself in a heated situation with my sister-in-law (SIL). When the waiter handed me the bill, she had the audacity to assume my husband Nate and I would cover it. Tired of always being expected to pay just because we're financially stable, I stood up, paid my half, and walked out, leaving everyone in stunned silence.
When I got home, I shared the whole ordeal with Nate, who was just as furious as I was. It felt good to have his support as we discussed whether we even wanted to attend SIL’s wedding after this incident. We both agreed we wouldn’t set a precedent where she could take advantage of us.
The next day, I received a call from my mother-in-law (MIL), who was livid about what happened. She claimed I embarrassed SIL and demanded I apologize. I tried explaining my side, but she wouldn’t listen. I finally told her I wouldn’t apologize for standing up for myself and hung up.
That’s when the family drama escalated. I started getting calls and messages from other relatives, with some siding with me and others saying I was in the wrong. Even my own mom suggested I should apologize to avoid conflict, which frustrated me even more. I felt like I was being unfairly painted as the villain when I had simply asserted my boundaries. Now I’m left questioning whether I really did the right thing or if I should have just kept quiet to keep the peace.

OP should've put the folder in front of SIL without skipping a beat saying "it's strange the waiter handed this to me" then walked out
By the time SIL realises what happened, OP would've been half way out the door

To All Our Wonderful Family Members:
I'm so glad you feel that SIL is entitled to get her special night taken care of.
Unfortunately, because this was sprung on me at the last minute, i was not in a position to take care of the bill - for several private reasons. If SIL had asked beforehand, probably something could have been worked out.
So, because SIL deserves to have this taken care of, and it *is* a family matter, we've decided that your share of supporting SIL and the family will be $100. You can make the check out directly to SIL. I'm sure SIL will let you know of her appreciation shortly after the wedding when things have calmed down a bit. Bless you for supporting the family so much.
BTW, we will consider this just an addition to the wedding gift you've already prepared.
Again, bless you for your kindness in stepping up to the plate. You're such good people.

When you invite me to a dinner, or a party, I believe that you are going to treat me. I may even be expecting it. One thing I neither believe nor expect is that I am going to be expected to pay for the whole party once you have me in front of an audience. There can be no peace in a relationship in which that level of presumption and entitlement is aimed by one person toward the other.

Just because her parents gave her everything she wanted doesn't mean the rest of the world is going to. She is delusional and needs to wake up.

The SIL knows her parents won't be around to support her forever, and want's her brother and OP to take care of her once her parents are gone. This was just her testing the waters, to see how OP would react.

Why are you even celebrating a Second failure of a marriage?
You don't expect for people to pay for anything/nothing/zero. If your parents can't pay for it... don't expect it!!!

Absolutely not. Is do the same. Before I met my amazing husband I had a string of bfs that leeched me out of thousands of pounds and I was naive thinking they would love me more if I cave. Nope was cheated on every time I was a purse nothing more. When it comes to money I now question everything being spent because of that. And it's so nice for once when my husband takes me out he doesn't stare me down expecting Me to pay. Abd yes I treat him too ❤

I would probably have stated my expectation that a second wedding was no one's expense but the couple's. Since when do family members have to pony up for the multiple weddings of one member? And, if we're going to just decide what each friend, family, guest must pay for without consultation, I'd be planning an Uno reverse in the future. Bet SIL would absolutely blow a gasket and no one would be telling her to suck it up to keep the peace.

I realize these stories are made up. They're way to extreme to be real. At least I really hope so! Having said that, it always annoys the hell out of me when people, put in ridiculous situations, waste their time trying to explain their side/point of view. If someone is so socially/emotionally retarded as to put you in this situation in the first place, then there is no way any explanation will be understood by them. Just say no and leave it at that. Explanations can sound like apologies to entitled people. It gives them an opening to keep demanding from you. Simply say no, pay your share and then walk away. This should apply to the family as well. Your money is none of their business. You not only don't owe them your hard earned cash, you owe them no explanations or apologies.

@@deborahbutcher3933 No, I never did. But if she did behave this way, then I hope you simply shut that down and didn't waste your time, energy or breath trying to justify your actions. Simply say no and walk away. People will think what they want and people like this, well, who really cares what they think? Not me. Wouldn't feel it necessary to go beyond a simple 'no'.

If the bill for 8 people is 1000 dollars it means 125 dollars per person , so I m sorry but this is far , very far from an upscale restaurant . With all the things OP said they ordered , at an upscale restaurant the bill would be at least 200 each and probably nearer 250 . Laughable really ....the notion of upscale seems quite strange
