I would probably have stated my expectation that a second wedding was no one's expense but the couple's. Since when do family members have to pony up for the multiple weddings of one member? And, if we're going to just decide what each friend, family, guest must pay for without consultation, I'd be planning an Uno reverse in the future. Bet SIL would absolutely blow a gasket and no one would be telling her to suck it up to keep the peace.

At first I was on the guys side. I agree EVERYONE should know how to cook basic things.(speaking as someone who’s parents never taught me cook) but then at the last bit of the story, I kinda felt for her? He said he was disappointed that she didn’t even try or put in more effort. It seemed like she did if the kitchen was really as messy as he explained. I think she tried and I hope that attempt didn’t stop her. I personally went from not knowing how to cook to knowing how to make very decent meals

I can never figure out why people split bill evenly. Only time I ever do it is when we order everything on the menu and we all share. No one person orders one thing just a table full of food. Past that you pay your own

OP is not wrong for desiring his wife to share the load with him but he is dead wrong for insisting that she cooks in a manner that is acceptable ti him AND allowing his mom to put her down. Cooking his OP's love language. He enjoys it and loves how much his wife appreciates his cooking, but cooking is not his wife's love language. She is not good at it, and forcing her to do it just because she's a woman or a wife knowing it makes her uncomfortable is cruel. Don't make it a chore for her or a source to contention. That's not love. She tried but it went wrong so she ordered take out. This means he had a meal waiting for him which was the original point. He wanted days he didn't have to cook. That solved the problem. Why is OP still angry and frustrated. They need to learn how to communicate better and NEVER EVER allow someone else to put their spouse down, especially in their home.

I realize these stories are made up. They're way to extreme to be real. At least I really hope so! Having said that, it always annoys the hell out of me when people, put in ridiculous situations, waste their time trying to explain their side/point of view. If someone is so socially/emotionally retarded as to put you in this situation in the first place, then there is no way any explanation will be understood by them. Just say no and leave it at that. Explanations can sound like apologies to entitled people. It gives them an opening to keep demanding from you. Simply say no, pay your share and then walk away. This should apply to the family as well. Your money is none of their business. You not only don't owe them your hard earned cash, you owe them no explanations or apologies.

I'm pissed at Nate. He should have interceded with his mother when this started years ago. Believe me, I would have had stern words with my mother over this with the potential of low or no contact. At this point if she doesn’t want to learn how to cook it’s her problem. I get everyone likes a home cooked meal and cooking is a basic life skill. But if she can’t cook or chop anything without royally screwing up she should just stay out of the kitchen.

He should've apologized and held himself accountable for what he did and his words. He also should've been an adult and simply cooked for himself. Meal prepping food only takes 1-3 hours per week, and anyway can learn to cook. I would only cook for myself and break up with him.

Plus cooking is a learned skill ( l went to a girls school and it was half a day a week in the cookery classroom)! But not able to cut a strawberry? How does she cut up her food to eat? The daughter in college is an adult too. All of these people are adults. Why are none of the other adults, including the daughter, doing anything about food? I had a job and managed to feed myself when I was in college.

If the bill for 8 people is 1000 dollars it means 125 dollars per person , so I m sorry but this is far , very far from an upscale restaurant . With all the things OP said they ordered , at an upscale restaurant the bill would be at least 200 each and probably nearer 250 . Laughable really ....the notion of upscale seems quite strange

To be fair a pound of spaghetti is NOTHING, it might be a strong meal for two people but it's a measly portion for four adults. Son and DIL should definitely contribute to groceries and cooking, but it's obvious that OP doesn't know how to cook for all of them.
