AITA For Refusing To Pay My Friend's Share Of The Bill After She "Forgot" Her Wallet?
    -----
A group of six friends, including the user and her friend Sarah, planned a dinner at a new Italian restaurant. The evening started well, with great food, laughter, and shared stories. When the bill arrived, Sarah claimed she forgot her wallet, a situation that had happened multiple times before. The user, tired of the repeated behavior, told Sarah she couldn't cover her share, which led to an awkward atmosphere. Another friend, Matt, ended up paying for Sarah, but the vibe was soured.
A few weeks later, the friends gathered for another dinner, hoping to move past the previous tension. Things seemed fine until the check came again, and Sarah claimed she only had half the amount she owed. Matt then pointed out she never repaid him from the previous dinner. The user, exasperated, laughed and sarcastically commented on Sarah's excuses, which visibly hurt Sarah and made the situation uncomfortable for everyone. Eventually, another friend, Jessica, covered Sarah's part but expressed her frustration at the ongoing issue. The dinner ended with a lingering tension, leaving the group's friendships strained.

Sarah could've sent the money via venmo or any number of apps to whoever was going to cover it right then and there. But she chose to be offended because she was refused.

Why worry about losing a mooch. She is not a friend. Especially as aggressively as she approaches you the next day.

She’s not a “little forgetful” she is a freeloader who enjoys using other people’s money for whatever she wants. And the fact everyone just laughed financially abuse off and kept her as a friend shows how open everyone is to being used again

No, the Mooch is the A-Hole. I've worked with Moochers before, they are willing to get the most expensive meal, order the most expensive drinks. Then they want to split the bill evenly. Your meal was $ 23.00, their meal/drinks was over $ 90.00

One of my husbands old college friends was a mooch. We would go as a group and throw cash in. When it got to him he would actually take money out leaving zero tip! We all rounded up a lot so added tip. This meant one of us would have to hand her some cash directly to at least cover her tip and basically we were all paying for him. The next time we went out I pulled the waitress aside and told her that it would be in her best interest to split the bills up. We made sure when ordering to say we are on one etc. she brings out the ticket and the rest if us tipped 25%. We knew mooch would not leave a dime. He didn’t but her sure complained about how much his bill was! It was great!

There's all kinds of moochers...there was a guy who mooched cigarettes off of everyone. He tried to mooch off me the most. His justification was the fact that I had two jobs so I had plenty of money.
Someone gave me a small firecracker to insert it into a cigarette for the next time.
The guy asked, I gave him the cigarette, it went blam after four drags...he was pissed but he never asked me again.

She can work it out with the restaurant. She won't count on you again. She has no right to be offended.

I don't understand why people split checks anyway. There's no reason with modern day technology that each person's bill can't be seperate from the others in the group.

  • @smokeynedith3555

Isn't that the way it goes? They forget their WALLETS, the only single item that is usually missing from their purses, when they have everything else in them. Funny, they never forget it when they go shopping or need to buy gas or have to pay the doctor's or dentist's office---only when there are other people around who could easily foot their part of the bill. The group needs to check everybody to make sure they have their portion of the tab before going out. And then check again before exiting the car(s). Unfortunately, this would be the only assurance when inviting that certain moocher.

My friend group had one male like that. He had a car and we would all give money toward gas but when we got to the club then suddenly he didn't have money and we had to pay for his ticket, drinks and snacks. Got old quickly and we just went out without him. He would call and ask when we are going out again but most of us just declined and found excuses.

I had a coworker that was always bumming cigarettes so I made a couple jokes the first time or 2 but she'd always say "I'm trying to quit so that's why I don't buy a whole pack because I'll smoke too many". We found out that she was just make her rounds to all of us so it wouldn't look like she smoked so many everyday so I waited until she asked me again when several of us was standing together & I told her, the only thing you're quitting is the buying part.lol she stopped bumming after that!

When I started dating my future wife, we were part of a group, a dozen people or so. There was one guy who skipped his part and we all had to cover him..twice.
We decided to ask for our own separate checks going forward...no matter what happened.
Guess what? He pulled that stunt again and we already paid our part of the check. Everyone else got screwed and the manager of the eatery we frequented tried to push it on my girlfriend and myself...I pushed it back.
Everyone eventually started doing the same thing until he, the mooch could only rely on one person. The mooch got a new girlfriend and she ended up paying his way for everything.
To this day, I don't do group checks...ever.

In my friends group anyone who couldn't afford the dinner and opting out we'd offer to cover. I'm glad for having such a great group of friends. We have monthly dinner when we take turns paying for all and the pick of restaurants. One time my birthday fell on Sunday and I budgeted a grand but apparently the restaurant was having fifty percent discount and I was so happy I tipped the servers a hundred each.

And there was I, expecting that Sarah would remember her wallet from now on ... and then the next dinner meeting. She'll never learn as long as people enable her. When not set up separate bills from now on? If she knows that will be the new normal, she can decide whether to go or not. As for the "I'm a girl" excuse, that got old in the1950s.

Your Sarah sounds like my Laurel.
Her daddy died, and mommie had to continue to work to support the two of them
My divorced mother had to work to support herself and her 5 children.
I babysat a couple of nights a week so I could go out with my friends to a movie and lunch.
Laurel would always ask me to pay for her cause Mommy had no money to give her.
I had to stop paying for her after we went to Toledo. She took my $20 bill so she could buy makeup and not give me back any change. I had to go without lunch and supper.

What day and age are we living in, nobody gives a fcuk if you have a wallet or not. I am 55 yrs old, I carry my wallet not to carry cash in it, but to carry my debit and credit cards, which I hardly use in this day and age, because of the advanced technology we have. All I need is my phone and some banking apps to pay. Her excuse for fogetting to bring the wallet, doesn't work anymore. I would have straight out told her to make the payment through any of the online apps.
Also, this story is crap and too long with unwanted details in it. It is not even worth 5 minutes.

Everyone handled that like champs, in my single twenty's before my friends and I all got married we all handled our own bill to the point if someone was like "your money is no good here" I would still put my part in their car without them looking I never wanted my friends to fill used ever. We did have that one friend who was a man and after the second "oh I forgot my wallet" we stopped inviting him he figured out we were going without him and acted like a child till several explain we were tired of paying for him and didn't want him to feel embarrassed to have to ask all the time.

I'm in my 60s now but when I was younger I had a number of people try this on me when we went on outings because most of my friends were European tourists, me I had a job in San Francisco I made about 500 to 600 cash a week but this was back in the 1980s when my rent was $90 a month so I had a lot of money I was the guy who supplied all the pot I was the one who supplied all the liquor so when they tried this crap on me I just told them well you may be a girl but you're not my girl and I'm not sleeping with you so until I'm having sex with you and sleeping with you I'm not paying for your food so go pay for your own damn food, you're already getting pot and alcohol off of me and if you don't want alcohol then fine I'll pay for your burger or your steak but you're not getting any pot or any alcohol from me, they did not like that so they opted for paying for their own food and I said don't ever try to make me pay for your food again because if you do I'll just cut you off, none of these people had any good connections for any good pot they didn't have any money either so basically they either paid for their own food or they go without haha😅

Point of sale system can itemize bills by your seat numbers and totals each seat either by your orders or by splitting evenly. Usually in sharing bills they will ask how you want to split the bill. Appetizers can be split evenly plus your main course and drinks. You can do this even in the late 90s.

Honestly, I would have stopped inviting hr out as she probably owes loads of money to different members of the peer group.. I would have booked somewhere ..run up a big bill and all skipped out leaving her with it. It's the only way some people learn.

I'm the anti-mooch: i don't have a dime, but alway pay for my share (as It should always be). My only problem Is that some friends in my group are pretty rich and when we dine together they Always take the most expensive item (and we Always split equally the bill); i usually have to choose between not partecipate, take the cheapest option trying to lower the Total (difficult with 10 people), or spend too much for my budget. I tried to ask a couple of time to split the bill based on what we ordered but the others prefer to split equally. Honestly some times it's tough choosing between go out with fiends and don't spend too much (Sorry, Just venting)

In fact, as a practitioner in the luxury goods industry, you need to go through a lot to find out which ones are fake, luxrul which is why people buy fakes because it is difficult to distinguish
