I have been experimenting on the Strid this month. Cant believe that guy almost lost his life there. Very lucky your friend was on the edge to pull you out holy shit
Your experiments were the first I seen this morning and the first time I heard about the strid. Very interesting! Can't wait for maybe a weighted mannequin, or something of the sort thrown into the strid to demonstrate under currents.
oh not luck. Kayakers do this all the time we call it setting safety (friends on bank with rope, essentially, and hopefully training..). There are protocols, techniques, classes, specialised equipment etc etc. Its very deliberate. That said I bet he was a tiny bit alarmed when he flipped there.. 0.0
for example, Kayakers get stuck in this cave a lot. There's even a bunch of biners and rescue slings already attached to the cliff for just such an occasion. ruclips.net/video/bDlJwcYShvQ/видео.html
So many people fail to realize that the Strid is a wide river turned on its side. It's quite deep in areas and has many holes or undercuts where a strong swimmer can be pulled to by currents and then held there for practically forever.
Everytime i see this clip thats what I think. No boof stroke, pulls skirt in 8 secinds with one attempted roll, doesnt lean into the flow when ferrying out Wtf was this dude doing above something with fatal caves Sketchy beaters
Well kayaking should be easier because it is much slower at the surface at least from whag i've seen in other youtube videos. I mean falling in is worse because you don't see whats under the surface but kayaking should be easier.
Paddling The Strid is bonkers. From what I understand, and from what I've seen from footage, undercurrents aren't really the issue, it seems to be siphons and overhanging rocks that make it deadly. Very easy to be dragged under with the flow of water and not be seen again for months. In kayaking, we tend to look for the risk / reward factor. Essentially, is the risk worth it? do you want to die 'name chasing'?
Why not make a solid cable above the entire strid that kayakers and scientist can connect themselves to? I mean honestly I feel like the amount of lives that this strid can take completely outweighs the cost.. (Or.. Another question I have is why cant we just dam up river so we can study the rocks below..? and then just remove the dam or keep it idk
That was insane. The footage gives a good idea of what a brutal river that is. When that guy fell in at that narrow bit - you know - the bit that's been measured at 65 meters deep..........edge of the seat stuff - I was expecting him to just disappear when he got rolled.
If anybody says something has 100% chance of happening, you can automatically smell BS. There are probably some potholes and undercuts in there, i bet its barely out of the ordinary.
@@kenaipeninsulawhitewater5650 It is very undercut and the entire bank is pretty much a sieve. That being said it certainly isn't 100% death, maybe without a pfd. But from my research it is still very very dangerous to be out of the boat.

You see plenty paddling in summer. One thing that is a guarantee is the over priced car parking, btw, almost ten quid a car. 🤑
Why does this sport not use full face helmets like motocross helmets? It seems pretty easy to smash your nose/face on underneath rocks with these little helmets.
They make some it’s just not common because you have to be half crazy in the first place and most people were taught without helmets, at least where I’m from (Missouri/Arkansas no one wears helmets hardly at all lol). I would still prefer a full face, but we take 12 footers (long boats) and usually don’t flip over unless it’s a total dump. You just had to paddle hard and duck rock faces lol. Undercuts are a bigger threat than anything else so being to swim uninhibited helps, not sure how that would be with a helmet. Life jacket helps, though, a lot of people don’t care to use those either. Skills and luck make up for a lot, I tend to agree on better safety gear being necessary, just depends. I don’t think I’d need more than a basic helmet for what I do, I’m more afraid of rocks I’m passing by around corners that I have to dodge above water. A chinned helmet might make it difficult to swim unless it was designed around it. Life jacket and basic helmet would help in most cases. The biggest missing ingredient I see is the lack of throw ropes. No one hardly knows what it even is here lol.
Generally low speed compared to motocross, that's why. That being said, some people do weat full face on very hard, very steep creeks. It's pretty easy usually to tuck into a position that protects your face
