The BEST Yellowtail Kingfish Bait Ever! | Landbased Fishing Australia

  • In this episode, I head out fishing in the iconic Sydney Harbour to Target the mighty Yellowtail Kingfish with Adam/Spinkingsyd. The weather was 35c+ and it was an absolute scorcher of a day! We use heavy rods which enable us to deadlift bigger species from the highly elevated Piers. There are some BIG fish to be had in these waters & that’s the aim of the game! I hook up to a mental little Yellowtail Kingfish which had me driving around multiple pylons trying to land the bugger. Sometimes the little ones are more aerobatic than the sheer brute strength of the bigger models. The Top Secret bait of choice, Live Prawns aka Inshore Kingfish Candy!

    Hi Mark great video who started the live prawn phenomenon with kingfish ,like prawns are always in the sand on the bottom if you know what I mean ? Also are you using 20lb to get them to bite better ? , or can you get away with 30 to 40lb fluorocarbon to get a 2nd chance for bigger fish if the hit structure or is that to much mate ?

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark
      @FishingwithMarkiMark  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the kind words mate! I got shown years ago when they were in season and they were gun! I remember some of my buddies catching 15-20 kings per day on them, with yakkas / squid in the water as well getting minimal hits. But not sure who came across it. Yes mate, you gotta go light to get the bight. Bare minimum i'd go here is 20lb. The sweet safe spot would be 30-50lb fluorocarbon. Its so sharp down there with barnacles even 150lb won't save you, it would probably buy you another 2 seconds. So i'd rather hookup on 30-40lb then hardly get touched on 150lb which I have seen some people use there. In Port hacking I find you have to fish light there or you wont get touched at all 20-30lb max! Hope that helps.

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark
      @FishingwithMarkiMark  5 лет назад +1

      Mate all I tie now is FG's. I tie a pretty efficient uni-2-uni but it just doesn't hold up as well or cast through the guides as well. Practice your fg's and they will outlast your uni knot to your hook any day of the week :) Hope that helps & glad you enjoyed it mate!

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark

      Hey man, honestly anything under 75cm you'll be able to dead lift on 20lb. You can definitely play it safe and have a bit more confidence on 30lb. Generally the lighter you go the more hookups... but could be more heartbreaks haha!

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark
      @FishingwithMarkiMark  2 года назад

      When the sun is at its lowest i tend to go shallower only 2-3m then as the sun goes higher the fish go deeper so I adjust my float to 5-6m depth for this location. For Kings PE5-6 at this location so you can lift them up. For bonito and others, dont have to go to heavy, can catch them on bream gear or PE2 will be ideal.

    I went to the piers yesterday and dropped a really small live prawn on a really light bream setup for trevally and as soon as I dropped it I thought I hooked the bottom and then the drag went, almost got spooled on my small 2500. I managed to turn it but then got me in the pylons just as I got him in close. Planning on doing a lot more fishing at the piers do you know where I can buy those Rod holders that strap onto the wood and then you sit your rod on them?

      Hey mate, thanks for stopping by. Typically they are all season, you just have to know where they reside in the cooler months. They are generally concentrated in small areas inside the harbour or middle harbour. There is definitely more of them in the warmer months and start up as the waters get warmer. Look at water temps online for an indication. People think because its cold outside there is no more kingfish, however the water stays warm a little while longer after the change of seasons. Its a challenging place to land your first kingfish, but during summer you should have smaller ones with the bigger ones in the mix so you can practice :)

    Hey mate why do you open bail arm when you got a fish on?

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark
      @FishingwithMarkiMark  5 лет назад +2

      Good question mate! Kingfish head to structure to try and bust you off when they know they have been hooked. This one went into structure being the pylons filled with barnacles underneath the pier multiple times. If you have tension in your line, you'll most certainly loose the fish, unless you manage to turn him out. Also depending on the fish, a lot of the time the fish will swim out if it doesn't feel tension and you can have another go at landing it! Hope that helps and thanks for watching! :)

      Hey mate appreciate the kind words! The biggest I’ve lifted from this location was 85cm! Check out my IG for a photo of that monster. I have it on my go pro but turned off my go pro mid fight, so I got the start of the fight and landing! I’ll probably just release that as is! That was on 40lb braid / 40lb leader on complete low tide so the lift was hard! Best tips man, get yourself a longer rod for this location like 8-10 foot so it doesn’t pull the fish too close to the pylons when pumping and winding and the rod strength around pe 3-5 and you’ll be able to lift around 90ish. If you do get that 1 meter you have to get it on surface walk it over to the steps that go into the water and get anyone to go down and grab it! Or sometimes you get lucky and someone brings a massive expandable net :) hope that helps!

Please don't think I am being a douche or secretive about locations. I've started RUclips to help out as much as possible and share my experiences, so that we can all benefit. I just don't think publicly posting locations would be the right thing for me to do, as the the ramifications of doing so would make it un-enjoyable for all persons. Hey mate we catch them in summer months as they can be expensive to buy, but there is a tackle store in the west that stock them, forgot the name however. I think someone mentioned the store in the comments from before. Cheers.

    Right opposite where you are fishing there is a wharf where I fished early this morning. I was bringing in a undersized snapper when "bang" something hit that snapper hard. Believe it or not I hooked a John Dory. This is the second time I've caught a Dory in the harbour. Unheard of. John Dory in Sydney Harbour. I always thought they were a deep ocean fish

      Thats amazing my man, my goal is to get one land based thats for sure. Some of my buddies have gotten them inside the harbour too. Just need to wait when the water is cold enough. :) Cheers.

    Is it true that the fish caught there are unsafe to eat?

    • @FishingwithMarkiMark
      @FishingwithMarkiMark  3 года назад

      Hey mate, typically it is not advised to eat fish from west of the harbour bridge. Personally I wouldn't eat anything non pelagic inside the harbour. Here is the Governments advice on consumption levels for the harbour: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-skills/fishing-in-sydney-harbour
