Best ZV-1 tutorials hands down! Thank you Vic for your wonderful videos, very, very helpful! I have a question if you don't mind. I'm a guitar player and do videos for RUclips, using now the ZV-1 I'm having problems focusing on my left hand as it moves up and down the fretboard. I was wondering if you could recommend a good setting for that. Thanks so much for your time and Happy New Year.
Hey Walter, thanks for dropping by! Appreciate the kind words :) Probably, the best option here is manual focus. You'll have to dial it in (what's in focus will be highlighted in red) but if you're moving up and down the fret board, that might cause some difficulty as the top will potentially be on a different focal length - Experiment with the manual focus though, I think it might be best. Other than that, if you're not too pushed about shutter and aperture, crank the aperture up (the higher the number, the less "blur" and it will be easier to have more things in focus. Let me know how it works out Walter and if it doesn't we'll see can we come up with another idea.
@@VicBarry Hey Vic, thank you so much for your quick reply, much appreciated! I’ll experiment with your suggestions in the next few days and let you know how it goes. I’ve been using a canon T1i with a 50mm lens, nice depth and blurred background but it will stop recording after 15 minutes, also since it has no zoom it’s hard to use it in a small place such as my studio. Anyhow, I wish I was as comfortable around cameras as I’m around my guitars lol. Talk soon :)
@@VicBarry Hi Vic, you were right, the manual focus worked very well. I can't get to see the "red highlight guide" on my screen, maybe I'm missing something, but rather than that I can still focus by dialing it in. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!!
@@walterfingerstyle Hey Walter. The red highlight is called focus peaking. If you go to the Menu, then first camera icon and page 11/12 and choose Peaking Setting. In there, you can turn it on and change the colour and amount of focus peaking. A great way to easily identify what's in focus without having to put the screen up to your nose to see it. Hope this helps - and rock on!

Is there a software update out there or an option i have to enable to see those red highlights? Thanks!
Hey there. The menu that I’ve used in this video is the tile menu. For the red to show up make sure you’re moving the wheel to enable focus and focus leaking is turned on 🙏

Hi Vic! Awesome Videos. Quick Question: I'm trying to have two ZV-1's feed 4k into an ATEM MINI (I know the atem mini doesn't do 4k, but I connected the monitor port of the atem mini to a 4k Elgato... theoretically that would give me 4k, but SONY will not feed 4k to the ATEM for some reason... I guess it detects that is not a "default" 4k device?) Let me know if you know how to do this... that would be great.)
Vic nice tutorials. In this one you don't point out what mode to use for manual focus. Obviously cant change the presets like scene modes and I found many pics in these presets to be out of focus. Not your fault but my ZV-1 is a 2022 model. The set-up doesn't look like yours. what mode are you in this demo? Program Mode?
Hey VB, my videos are coming out to be quite blurry when when I am moving the Sony ZV1 camera around or the subject is moving his/her hand etc, can you please help me out as what is causing this and what settings to me chnaged to fix ths
Hi there, sounds like the shutter speed is too slow. Try shooting in 4k 24 or 4k 30 and make sure to set the shutter to 1/50 or 1/60. Or try shutter priority and dial in either of the above settings
Great video - thanks. Can I ask if you know whether the manual focus I set is remembered between shooting multiple clips or across power off / power ons? I have a fixed distance to a wall board and different clips are in different amounts of focus each time I start recording. Cheers.
Thank you. I’m wondering if manual focus is helpful for wide landscape shots like a cityscape? I feel like blinking lights in the distance mess up auto focus so I thought that setting manual focus to infinity is the best option for this scenario. Am I correct?
Mine keep focus popping in and out its ruined so much footage any ideas how to get it to stop this? it never used to do it. its zooms in a little in and out all the time its aweful.
Nice job Vic. Quick question, how close was the camera lens to that screen? I often need to bring up something really close to the lens to show some detail. Camcorder will let me go about 1 inch and focuses quick - curious how this compares. They say min focus distance is 2 inches... do you find this true and how quick will it focus for that distance? Thanks!
Two shortcuts that "could not be easier" and 100 rotations on the wheel later you set the focus to infinity. There should be one button setting the focus to infinity instead.
Help me Obi Wan... LoL I think this and manual exposure are the next things I need to learn because I believe that will also create better videos for RUclips. I’m struggling w slow motion. Oh dear haha
Hey Nick,’to be honest manual exposure won’t make better videos. Better story telling / content makes better videos. Is there a specific reason you want to shoot manual? Shutter priority mode will help if you want to start getting a bit of motion blur (use 1/50) I’ve a bunch of slow motion tutorials on the channel for the ZV1. Let me know if they’re any help
Vic Barry I mean better videos in terms of image quality. I watched one of your slow-mo videos and I must be doing something wrong. I think it worked once by luck. I noticed it didn’t return to the settings I use for normal filming. Thanks. I’ll check for others.
Thanks for the video. Just some follow up questions: I noticed @ 1:30, the built in mic from the ZV-1 (maybe) picked up the wheel clicking noise from the manual focus adjustment. Will using an external mic prevent that from happening? Better yet, is it possible to use the Imaging Edge Mobile app linked to the ZV-1 to adjust manual focus? If so, could this be a better approach as it would eliminate any accidental jostling of the camera from using the click wheel dial?
Thanks for the tutorial Vic. When I turn the camera off, the focusing distance defaults to landscape. I tried saving the setting in MR1 but that doesn't work. Is there a way to save the focus distance setting so that I dono't have to spin the wheel everytime I want to take a shot? - Thanks
Hi, how are you? Great review. I have 2 questions. Is there a lock button or a lock choice to choose to lock this manual focus you have demonstrated? I’m asking this because I’m considering purchasing this camera and I want to use it to film my son basketball games. With so many focal points on the screen as you know, auto focus will be all over the place. So I plan to use the manual focus as you demonstrated, but is there a way to lock it? My other question is related to recording 4K video, is there a time limit,/video clip limit that this camera will cut off at? I’ve had older Sony cameras, and there’s always a time limit. Whenever you can, please answer these questions. I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Hey Chris. Manual focus is completely locked off as it’s entirely related to distance to the subject so as the subject (or you) move around things are going to go in and out of focus. The auto focus on the zv-1 is incredibly good. I think you’ll be fine to be honest especially if you’re court side. This is the same for any camera that has manual focus. Never had the zv-1 over heat shooting 4k footage (and I’ve shot a lot) Best of luck.
Namaste Vic, I have probably watched most (and definitely all ZV-1) videos - before and after I bought it! I run mindfulness and Yogic breathing sessions helping people to keep their psychical and mental health in order. People log into Zoom. I have OBS set up with ZV -1 video and audio (through HDMI) into OBS. I have been using Intelligent Auto mode. I have two issues and I would greatly appreciate if you can help. Firstly, the focus is not very clear as I would like. I would like to try try manual focus however my position is three ft away from ZV-1 so I can't reach and adjust the focus. Secondly my white clothes look way too white. Many thanks.
Take it out of intelligent auto for a start. Try aperture priority and set the aperture to something that you want. Then go from there. If your clothes are too white it’s over exposing possibly. The auto focus is really good so unless something is getting in the way then….
@@VicBarry I found it. In dutch it was nothing related at the word "peaking" at all (changed it to English) Haha. I want to thank you for the quick response en for making such amazing video's. Before I bought the zv1 is was hesitant to get into cameras, photo and video because of all the new things that I needed to learn. Now I am loving it and this is partly due to your channel and good (enthusiastic) videos. Cheers from the Netherlands
Maybe I am thick, Vic, but why would you rotate the rear dial instead of rotating the focus ring on the lens? Surely the lens focus ring is more precise and faster. The only problem I can see is those stupid lenses that have AF/MF switching instead of manual override. I grew up before AF and it is second nature to me to focus on the lens. I also hate it when lenses have no aperture dial. It always seems so unnatural to use a camera dial for that. I spent years using Canon EF and Phase One so I use camera dials, and did daily for years, but one of the joys of Sony and MFT is being able to adapt old Nikkor glass and enjoy the huge pleasure of using the aperture ring. I had been using manual focus from 1962 to the 90’s so that muscle memory is baked in, and for most things except very fast action I still find manual focus is faster, and if needing to set AF points, MF is way faster. The aperture dial is the biggest reason I like the little Panny LX100. It is very simple things that give pleasure to us older time photographers :)
Hey Tony, there is no ring :( - It's probably the biggest downside of the camera to be honest. That and it's not exactly intuitive to find you're way to setting focus once in manual mode.
Is that a smallrig cage on yours? I just ordered the one with the wooden grip, but I like the black grip you have better. Didn't see that one on their site, or is it for an RX100?
Adam Johnson I got the same wooden grip one. Works great but I purchased some texturized rubber grip from Talon Grips, took some measurements and cut out enough to cover the wood. Looks and feels much better IMO
Jesse Rikk thanks Jesse! I live in Florida and hands frequently get sweaty in the heat so I was a bit worried about the slickness of the wooden grip. Your idea is great. Thanks!
Is there a way to turn off the focus? I want it to be that everything is clear in shot frame even when moving around so it is not trying to focus on just 1 thing. Thank you.
@@john_free_thinker use manual focus and turn the dial to infinite, everything past a certain distance to infinite would be in focus. manual focus is the way to keep it from jumping focus to random stuff. but with infinite, things close would be out of focus. so you have to just play with it till your satisfaction. also raising aperture would help broaden the things in focus.
Can I use this camera for shooting Mukbang (eating ) videos with black background with manual focus is focused on the food in the front leaving the person eating somewhat out of focus? I hope you can answer me thank you

Mine keep focus popping in and out its ruined so much footage any ideas how to get it to stop this? it never used to do it. its zooms in a little in and out all the time its aweful.
My ZV-1 is not showing the "AF"/"MF" little white box on the screen?
Nice job Vic. Quick question, how close was the camera lens to that screen? I often need to bring up something really close to the lens to show some detail. Camcorder will let me go about 1 inch and focuses quick - curious how this compares. They say min focus distance is 2 inches... do you find this true and how quick will it focus for that distance? Thanks!
Focus is super quick on the ZV1 but it’s the focus distance that makes things in focus. If it’s too close it won’t matter. Does that make sense?
Two shortcuts that "could not be easier" and 100 rotations on the wheel later you set the focus to infinity. There should be one button setting the focus to infinity instead.
thank you❤
You’re welcome
Help me Obi Wan... LoL I think this and manual exposure are the next things I need to learn because I believe that will also create better videos for RUclips. I’m struggling w slow motion. Oh dear haha
Hey Nick,’to be honest manual exposure won’t make better videos. Better story telling / content makes better videos.
Is there a specific reason you want to shoot manual? Shutter priority mode will help if you want to start getting a bit of motion blur (use 1/50)
I’ve a bunch of slow motion tutorials on the channel for the ZV1.
Thank you!!!
No worries Kelly. Hope you find it useful
Ok I want film at night ok which camera is better in 1080p the canon xa30 or the zv1?
Thanks for the video. Just some follow up questions: I noticed @ 1:30, the built in mic from the ZV-1 (maybe) picked up the wheel clicking noise from the manual focus adjustment. Will using an external mic prevent that from happening? Better yet, is it possible to use the Imaging Edge Mobile app linked to the ZV-1 to adjust manual focus? If so, could this be a better approach as it would eliminate any accidental jostling of the camera from using the click wheel dial?
You’re correct. It does pick up the wheel movement and that was with an external mic. If you’re using a wireless mic though you should be fine.
Thanks for the tutorial Vic. When I turn the camera off, the focusing distance defaults to landscape. I tried saving the setting in MR1 but that doesn't work. Is there a way to save the focus distance setting so that I dono't have to spin the wheel everytime I want to take a shot? - Thanks
No problems. When it comes to manual focus you can’t save a focus distance.
Thanks. Once set up manual focus, does it stay at that distance for the entire shot? I don't want the camera to pick up another object while I shoot.
Yes. Once the camera doesn’t move the focal length will stay the same
I only hope I can set enough custom buttons up!
You’ll be fine mate 😂
Never had the zv-1 over heat shooting 4k footage (and I’ve shot a lot)
Best of luck.
Love your vids bro 🔥👏🏿🤛🏿
Glad you like them!
Hi Vic, how can I adjust the bokeh heavier for videography?
Hey Shukri, the lowest you can go is 1.8 on the aperture. You’re not going to squeeze any more bokeh than that.
@@VicBarry thanks Vic. Always enjoy your content 😉
Thanks for taking the time to watch the vids, Shukri - Really appreciate it
Hey there, can I ask you where you got that ND filter? I have the Ulanzi lens for the ZV1 also..
It’s a k&f concept one ( amazon)
@@VicBarry Thank you! I've watched several of your videos and you taught me a lot. Keep up the good work!
Awesome. Thank you for the support. Thrilled the videos have helped you out 🙏
Hi, what is the difference between "Focus Standard" option and "Set Focus"?
I see that you don't have "Focus Standard" option there for some reason
@@VicBarry Thank you Vic.
Hi! How do you make things in focus red?
Hey there, make sure focus peaking is turned on in the settings
@@VicBarry I found it. In dutch it was nothing related at the word "peaking" at all (changed it to English) Haha. I want to thank you for the quick response en for making such amazing video's. Before I bought the zv1 is was hesitant to get into cameras, photo and video because of all the new things that I needed to learn. Now I am loving it and this is partly due to your channel and good (enthusiastic) videos. Cheers from the Netherlands
Ah great stuff. Glad you got it sorted. Thanks for the kind words. Appreciate it
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Hey Adam, no this is specific to the ZV1. It goes in and out of stock fairly quickly from what I’ve seen
Vic Barry ok thanks! Great video btw!
Thank you.
Hey John, afraid not. You can push the aperture quite high and this will keep most things in focus but at a cost of light
@@VicBarry Is there a way to make it that the camera focus is not all over the place/ a way to make the focus calm and settle?
AWESOME!!!
Thanks!!
hey thanks for the video >
how can i make the auto focus Not being shallow ?
like i want the subject and the background to be in focus ?
Change the f stop to a higher number.
@@VicBarry
thx bro ☺
Which camera would you recommend Canon g7x mark ii or Sony ZV-1? I am worried about the stabilisation
I'd go for the ZV-1 to be honest. The autofocus alone makes it better than the G7X. Stabilisation is good, not amazing, but decent.
@@VicBarry thank you! I went for ZV-1. Couldn’t deal with bad autofocus and the ticking sound it makes.
Can I use this camera for shooting Mukbang (eating ) videos with black background with manual focus is focused on the food in the front leaving the person eating somewhat out of focus? I hope you can answer me thank you
Yep. Manual focus works well
@@VicBarry Thank you so much for answering my question. Actually I'm using Nikon for shooting my Mukbang videos but I have a major problem with lighting. some scenes suddenly became either overexposed or underexposed when moving the hand or picking some food. I shoot manually with focus fixed on food not the person eating. I know Nikon is not the best camera for videos but do you think Sony ZV 1 will solve this problem for me?
hi good morning I wanted to know which lens he used in this video for the Sony z-v1?
Hey there, it's a Sigma 16mm
@@VicBarry hello can you point me to a shop where I can buy it .. thanks in advance
is the video in low light is good
No :(
Nice & Thanks :)
Haaii
How to plat sony Zv1 files in windows pc.
Hey there can you show us how to take portrait pictures on the Sony zv 1
Lol i can’t find custom key 🤦🏻♀️
muchas gracias por tu tiempo... muy útil!!
Eres muy bienvenido
Does zv1 have changeable lens ????
No
@@VicBarry please do you recommend s22 ultra or 12 pro max for filming videos
why does it zoom so far in like that when manual focus its really frustrating especially when i am taking photos o f certain things and find it difficult to see the product
It's to help get the focus perfect. Off the top of my head, I think you can turn that option off in the settings.
Wow. All of my Canon lenses have a switch on the lens.
Lol. Thanks Vic!
You bet! Thanks for dropping by dude!

The auto focus on my ZV-1 sucks when it comes to picture taking and the subject being very close to camera. As you can tell by my latest video....ruclips.net/video/EJF0aFPBniU/видео.html Do you have any advice?
Every camera / lens has a minimum focus distance, so you'll always come into focus issues if the lens is too close to the subject
@@VicBarry Thank you for that tip. So it's better to put the camera father from the subject and zoom in?
Hes going to fast for me. Slow down brother.
