Yuja Wang plays Chopin Ballade No. 3 in A flat major, Op. 47 at Jerwood Hall, LSO St. Lukes, London, Friday the 21st of Februari 2014. This was a free concert, a so called "Lunchtime concert". The day before, she played Rach III at the Barbican in London.

The central choice in this ballade is how to balance the three appearances of the theme. Wang chose a very subdued touch the first two times through, so she could build the crescendo going into the third from a very low dynamic. I think that is a fine approach, although I feel the best interpretations rely less on the crescendo than making sure the third appearance is as explosive as the pianist can make it. That was the Horowitz approach.

Yuja is very close to Chopin. Unfortunately, the microphones are very far from Yuja. These cellphone recordings are horrible, and usually not allowed in the first place. 😎🎹
