What to do when you have a problem ( )Option 1: Find a solution ( )Option 2: Talk with someone about that ( )Option 3: Ask for help ( x )Option 4: Laugh at our problem
Being a piano mover I know exactly what was wrong with the piano. It's called a Pitman rod, and it is part of the sustain mechanism. The rod became separated from the armature while moving the piano on it's side. I have fixed thousands of Pitman rods over the 22 years I have moved pianos. I always play a few notes or even a song or two to check that the rod has not come free or stuck in the sustain mode/position as it was here. The rod could have come out completely and then would have not been able to sustain at all because it couldn't raise the dampers. Both situations can happen. As it was, her piano was in constant sustain thus the rod had come out an jammed the sustain arm in the up position and kept the dampers from coming down and muting the strings as they normally should. Had I been at the concert, I wonder if I would have had the nerve to speak up and suggest that I could fixed the problem in about 45 seconds as I have done this thousands of times. I suppose I would a spoken up as I love to fix problems no matter what the situation. A problem I run into occasionally when my wife has a issue at work and I try to fix it for her, when all she wants to do is vent, and for me to just shut up and listen!
This particular video is one of the most amazing I have ever seen because ... of the lesson it contained for me to learn. Rather than becoming upset (as so many tempramental artists would do) ... we see her the true demonstration of how an artist performs .... when taking a situation that could have distributed the mood for everyone ... and turning it into something lovely, fun, funny ... and teaching me to do the same in my life. Thank you for this absolutely stunning and meaningful video Elaine.
Absolutely. Ella Fitzgerald won a Grammy in 1961 for her album "Ella in Berlin" in no small part because she FORGOT the lyrics to Mac the Knife. Her solution to forgetting the lyrics was to make them up on the spot. Think about that -- she won awards and acclaim because of a major brain fart. Had she not messed up she would have had perfectly fine album, but her error, and her handling of it, made it a classic.
Well said, and there is a lot of truth in what you say ...thank you for expressing it so well. I'm sure the artist would be very pleased to read these observations, if, characteristically, humble !..
She obviously loves to play! What a treat to see another pianist who plays standing up. Superb aplomb and sense of humour. And, is she speaking Dutch at some points? Really, this video is a total treat in every way. Brava bravissima Eliane!
Awww.....she is absolutely lovely and what a pro! I adore her wonderful sense of humor as much as her mastery!! Loved the way she began playing Debussy's beautiful Arabesque and even continued playing other excerpts as they were sliding the piano across the floor, then lowering it under the stage and back again! FABULOUS!!! The audience loved her and so did I! BRAVO! ~Jackie
You have stated eloquently all of my thoughts and emotions in watching this. I adore her for how fluidly, seamlessly, and professionally she adapted to a rather ridiculous situation. To take an event from a chance of ridicule to a moment of gleeful mastery is a divine talent.
Pentanubes: I give you credit for your deep thought and time constructing this comment, however, this could have been construed as a safety hazard and should not have been allowed into the pit. Also, if she became so comfortable with the old piano that she couldn't stop and played while standing, then she could have continued playing as a professional.
So, we have: 1) Great thinking on her feet to think of Debussy's Arabesque #1 as the perfect piece for a stuck pedal. 2) An excellent rendition, under any circumstances. 3) A recreation of the latter half of the Victor Borge page turner/piano mover schtick. 4) A piano version of the old "theater organ descending into the stage while still being played" trope. And more... That's a performance those folks will definitely never forget!
Thanks, I was wondering what the piece was. Unbelievable lack of awareness by the stage-hands, who keep moving the replacement piano while she's trying to perform to a live audience ! Just move the stool into position so she can sit down, guys... worry about the EXACT piano-positioning after the crowd's gone, LOL... wtf
She's brilliant! I LOVE her!Other musicians would kick up a fuss but she got on with it with such amazing good humor. It's Hard to believe this is happening.A true artist!
What a brilliant musician - not just her playing ability (which was excellent), but her whole making a joke of it, not being thrown by the glitch and not being a total and utter diva and drama queen! Shame the whole concert wasn't posted! Wish I'd have been there for such a wonderful performance all round!
I wonder how easy or difficult it is to be graceful, humorous and witty? Or is 'witty' the wrong word? Intelligent? The occasion demanded some kind of contribution from the audience. But was language the problem here? I'd like to think that there are some wits in the audience. It would seem here there were not. The poor lady was left to do ALL the entertaining!
This woman has the soul of a true performer. I thought she was channeling Jerry Lee Lewis, playing standing up. Her long skirt prevented her from putting one leg up on the keyboard. Eliane Rodrigues, you rock!
I am so THRILLED to find this video! I had the exact same thing happen to me at my students' recital about 10 yrs. ago. I noticed immediately as I started the Sibelius Romance in D-flat that the pedal wasn't working correctly, due to the loosening of a pedal extender that I had added for my younger students. I got about 2 measures in before I just had to stop. I apologized, bent down as gracefully as possible, secured the extension, stood back up, and started over. For years I've second guessed the decision, wondering if stopping was unprofessional. It's so good to know that someone as talented and professional as Ms. Rodrigues made the same choice as I did!
Winde Marshall u made the right call. :))) I enjoy the show so much more when something goes awry. Then you know the performer is truly present and isn't just going through the motions and doing one more show and who knows ... if you ever get to meet you can say you were at THAT show and they'll probably remember w a laugh. Good times. :)))
You did the right thing. A professional performer owes the audience the best performance possible. They're there for the music, not ceremonial decorum. If you could fix the problem easily, you made the right choice for the audience.
She actually puts me at ease.. I love how she treated the situation... many would've been upset, but she turned it into a positive right away. Perhaps it's an example of how your view of things shape the reality. 🦋
That is the Brazilian way of thinking. we live in the country with the most taxation in the world yet most things dont work lol we would all be looneys if we did not have this way of reacting to things XD
She even helps push the piano... in heels and a tight dress! And doesn't even pause to catch her breath, just starts her scheduled piece. What an example of grace under pressure!
@@justcheck6645 Yes. But sh*t can happen, on any stage, at any stage. This I know from all the stage managers, actors and musicians in my circle. That's everyone worked together to rectify the situation quickly, without any fuss on stage, is a sign of professionalism on all sides.
They failed to provide a working piano.... They did the bare minimum and she worked wonders around them, entertaining the audience and excusing the stage assistant's mistakes with her professionalism. There are lots of examples of stage assistants doing incredibly good work, this is definitely not one of them imo.
I'm kind of surprised there was no piano technician at the venue. It probably would have been quicker and easier to fix this piano than replacing it with another one! But good job to the stage techs!
Not my music style, but extremely talented and classy lady. Most artists of her capability would be storming off the stage but she played along and brought added joy and enjoyment! A true artist and performer! Loved her!!!
That's not just a great musician, it's a great entertainer. She turned what could have been embarrassing or just boredom for the audience into a truly memorable night.
She is SO charming. What a sense of the moment, making her audience enjoy the mishap. She is amazing. I envy her spouse, if she has one. It must be a wonderful life.
I am just in love with her outlook on life. If more of us could take a lesson from her, how pleasant could life be for us all, and what could be accomplished each day?. Watch this in the morning, before you do anything else, and then begin your day.
Most ppl would have lost their cool or played the blame game in a situation like this. She went with the flow and gave her audience a unique and enjoyable experience that they will never forget. An example of a brilliant and naturally charismatic performer.
Victor Borge would have loved this! I love it when performers don't get angry or throw a tantrum when problems happen, but instead just have fun with it and not take themselves too seriously. Shit happens, why get mad? The audience may enjoy seeing your lighter side and humor just as much as they would the performance!
This woman is amazing. She never loses her place, never loses her cool, quits playing, or even messes up despite all that is going on. My hat truly goes off to her.
Absolutely priceless! She got help, to get the piano replaced (fortunately, they actually had a replacement piano available, below the stage); but once she knew that was going to take a little time, she went on and played, anyway - even while they were preparing the piano to be lowered on the platform, to be replaced. Not only that, but she did it with a sense of humor, and STILL played beautifully (or, as beautifully as one could ever have expected, with a piano moving around on the stage). I don't know very many....well, ANY pianists who could have carried that off, as graciously as she did, under those circumstances, and with a smile on their face. Deep respect for Ms. Rodriguez. She is the epitome of a true, dedicated, and passionate musician, and with a healthy sense of humor, too! :-). Whoever posted this priceless video - thank you. It made my day.
It was a once in a lifetime incident and rather than sending everybody home they had an evening they’ll never forget , and so will she ..she was a real trooper
This is just as compelling a demonstration of proficiency as playing the pieces perfectly. It takes a skilled and confident performer to just roll with it so unashamedly - she's on stage to put on a show no matter what!
A true pro. To watch the performance you would have thought it was staged, how she adapts and continue to play was an amazing feat physically and emotionally . Job well done.
Wowwww!!!!! A Eliane é incrível!! Que talento, simpatia, destreza com o piano e entrosamento com o público....adorei a forma como ela reagiu diante esse problema técnico e fez um baita show! Que pianista sensacional! Parabéns!
Most performers (if not most person) will/might be mad and angry when this kind of incident happened. She really shown a good adaptability and professionalism when handling the incident. Hats off to the woman, she got my most respects👏👏👏
Would you be angry? Might you get mad? I think most people would laugh off something like this, on the contrary. Most people are adaptable and skilful enough to get round a hazard or calamity. The problem is, unlike this charming lady, most people don't have a well-dressed audience in a light-hearted mood watching them. So the claims of being witty, adaptable and professional and all that go unrecognised.
@@DrTWG You know there is this thing called Google where you can look stuff up, right? Emotional intelligence means responding to situations with appropriate responses, not flying off the handle
luckily this outstanding performance has been recorded..the way she improvises, together with the stage assistents is magical..this proves how she is not letting this malfunctioning of the pedal, stop her..deserved a standing ovation!!
It's always been amazing to observe musicians who idealize and expect perfection, to the point they loose their minds and composure over the smallest detail - slight resonance imperfection or someone sneezing/coughing in the audience. It's even more amazing to watch this pianist play around for fun and "experiment" in front of a live, fairly large audience who probably expected perfection :). Without giving in to anxiety, pleasantly smiling, and with seemingly endless empathy for the moving/setup crew, she continued playing just for fun. Almost as if to give a reprieve to the individuals swapping out the piano - who provided an opportunity for her to continue playing as she rode (and played) on the stage freight elevator. And she played brilliantly. A class act. Great post! Thank you for sharing.
This video performance COULD BE considered a failure, and many people might call it such, BUT, I certainly would not! Ms. Rodrigues, and the staff on hand, took an unfortunate situation, and made it into, not only a positive experience, but a very delightfully entertaining one! It reminded of something Chico (pronounced "CHICK-O) Marx, or Victor Borge would have done, on purpose, to get some laughs! Walking with, and playing, the piano shows very good coping and playing skills. BRAVO!! VERY ENTERTAINING INDEED!!!!!
The sustain pedal would not release. It affects every single key on the piano, so it's not a matter of "a tone being off or something", the piece she had advertised as playing that night would have been virtually unlistenable. Nobody is criticizing her for what happened, instead she is being praised for taking an unexpected setback and dealing with it with grace and humor while the problem was rectified.
Jakob Jones : Too much words for someone who obviously doesn't know what pedals are used for. "Most humans are pathetic" Right ! And you're their leader, for sure.
And I have the feeling she'd be a fun person to have show up someplace like one of those piano restaurants or where there's a piano left open to the public. Seems like she's one of the players that adapt on the fly easily to dead keys, detuning, or stuck pedals, and know how to cope and put on a good if not great show at a public venue where the expectations aren't as high. The personality shown here is also the type that'll just randomly hop on one of those pianos and play a tune. Now I'm curious if she can belt out a boogie or ragtime as fluidly as her classical playing is in this situation.
They should open all piano recitals with the piano coming up from below the stage like that! I Iove it! Love her "Show must go on!" attitude and her sense of humor! 👏
That was BEAUTIFUL! I'm moved to tears. The confidence and utter selflessness she displayed are nothing short of amazing. Her respect for the audience, which came to be entertained, and for the "help" who did, and for music, which, apart from life's excitement, irregularities and triumphs, would never touch a soul, flowed as naturally from her as the piece she was playing. So much to be learned from this wonderful video! Thank you for it.
She rolled with a gut punch that would throw average musicians into a tizzy! Exceptional composure and a great sense of humor that enchanted and charmed the audience and viewers!
This is what we called "Jeitinho Brasileiro" that is the Brazilian way of facing the problems. We just find a way doesnt matter if the way is ortodox or not. We just dont stop. Very good pianist.
@@peterkoller3761 Yes, that's correct, but the saying changed over the time. Originally, it was, "If you don´t have a dog, you hunt like the cat", meaning, you hunt alone. But in portuguese, "like the cat" and "with the cat" are fonetically very similar, and people changed it to the later form, which is somewhat funny, who carries a cat to a hunt, lol? But, after all, the meaning is the same, if things are not working by the book, forget about the book and be creative.
Professionalism at its best! As a musician I can totally relate. I bow to her, how she turned a misfortunate event, with her comic talent, all the way around and kept guests entertained every second.
This is surely the nightmare of all musicians and one of the worst things which could happen on stage in a live concert. 😨 But she excellently dealt with the situation and knew how to entertain her audience. Great job and - indeed - very moving 😄.
Ehh, for some maybe. But if you're lighthearted, and a seasoned performer, you'll take it in stride. Things happen, and nothing is perfect. The way she laughs it off proves she knows just that.
I had the solder fail on the bell section of my trombone a couple of days after having performed in a brass band contest last year. The first thought that went through my mind was that I was glad it didn't happen up on stage. I don't think any amount of lightheartedness would allow you to laugh off the fact that it had just ruined the performance and put to waste the work you had put in over the previous 2 months.
That would no doubt be a very disappointing event. But again, not your fault. So you really can't blame yourself for ruining a performance. The unexpected will always happen in live performances. Take them with a grain of salt. You can't blame yourself for a gear failure, unless of course it was due to personal neglect. Now, your personal ability to perform a piece well, that shouldn't be taken lightheartedly.

Good stuff, algorithm. Good stuff.
We, Brazilians, don't get rattled by much. 😁
I think she just stayed with the piano and went where it went because she didn't want to stop playing.
I wish the techs had thought to turn on a smoke machine for the resurrection.
Haha yeah, that'd have been even better. Not sure if those are always on standby though, so it wasn't possible probably. (And not sure if the piano would've liked that.)
😂👏🏼
@@kumaahito3927 haha that would have been funny! I'm one of the technician's at this venue and the Hazers/Smoke machines are indeed stored in a storage room when they have not been requested.

I just showed my wife this video and she blamed me for the problem with the piano.

True leaders know how to take an unforeseen situation and turn it around.
You're right. ...molto Zen
Well said, and there is a lot of truth in what you say ...thank you for expressing it so well.
I'm sure the artist would be very pleased to read these observations, if, characteristically, humble !..

BRAVO! ~Jackie
And all of that in heels.
Jackie Perks - Classical Jams : This is awesome. 👏👏👏
Eddyvedeostar where IS your sense of humor?
The show must go on!
She is a musical genius.
So, we have:
1) Great thinking on her feet to think of Debussy's Arabesque #1 as the perfect piece for a stuck pedal.

Just move the stool into position so she can sit down, guys... worry about the EXACT piano-positioning after the crowd's gone, LOL... wtf
It's very difficult to play so well standing up, let alone walking around after a randomly moving piano.
Beethoven asked for the pedal down all through the first movement of his moonlight sonata!

You will get people who argue both sides. All that should matter is: "DId the audience enjoy the show?"
If your car fails while you're driving, you stop the car, fix it and only then continue. Same situation with your piano pedal.
If the music isn’t going to be played correctly, I think it should stop. For sure. This is the real world we live in.
Wow! I have respect for this lady. She brought humour and demonstration of skill through this.

There was more than one 'real pro' on stage. Hats off, and bravo, to the two stage assistants.
Agree; they deserved applause
It was one of the stage staff's responsibility, and certainly the stage manager's to make sure everything was correct in the first place
@@justcheck6645 Yes. But sh*t can happen, on any stage, at any stage. This I know from all the stage managers, actors and musicians in my circle. That's everyone worked together to rectify the situation quickly, without any fuss on stage, is a sign of professionalism on all sides.

Huge emotional intelligence - I wonder if more likely in a woman than in a man
Would you be angry? Might you get mad? I think most people would laugh off something like this, on the contrary. Most people are adaptable and skilful enough to get round a hazard or calamity. So the claims of being witty, adaptable and professional and all that go unrecognised.

David Rock m ,,l.
Excellent thinking on her feet. Audiences appreciate performers who can turn around a bad situation and make it part of the performance.
Jacob, you know the price of everything and value of nothing.
Jakob Jones Don't YOU know how to enjoy a mishap gone good!

Isn´t there also a Brazilian saying: If you don´t have a dog, you hunt with the cat?
@@peterkoller3761 Yes, that's correct, but the saying changed over the time. Originally, it was, "If you don´t have a dog, you hunt like the cat", meaning, you hunt alone. But in portuguese, "like the cat" and "with the cat" are fonetically very similar, and people changed it to the later form, which is somewhat funny, who carries a cat to a hunt, lol? But, after all, the meaning is the same, if things are not working by the book, forget about the book and be creative.

Frank B. Taylor70
I think it wasn't an accident
