@@Claytone-Records it's been a few decades since I read Miles' autobiography but my recollection about both Bitches Brew and Kinda Blue was that Miles came along with scraps of manuscript with thematic ideas, handed them out and let the greatest improvisers he had carefully curated go for it! Did he write the songs? I don't know, but he certainly produced them, in the true sense of that word.

Love Lenny White but for some reason I’m not enjoying his mediocre input of this particular performance. There’s too much emphasis on a 4/4 beat, barely breaking up and highlighting the irregular time signature which makes ‘You Know You Know’ what it is. After all, he was the main man with Return To Forever all those years back and a prominent figure in the fusion movement!

The first time, they had to stop after two encores . . . John came out to apologize because Billy Cobham was totally cramped. If you haven't checked out Spectrum, Billy's solo effort, please do so.

John McLaughlin was a shredding guitar monster before shredders were invented. He was shredding way back in the early 70s along with Allan Holdsworth during his Soft Machine day's and Jan Akkerman during his Focus days. These were the real guitar giants of their day.

I was ring-side at the Blue Note, NYC for this show w. dear friends Joe & Anne in 2016. Blue-Note had booked Chick for a month for his 75th b-day. He got to play with different combinations of musicians he had worked with over his long, amazing career. To see Chick & John McLaughlin together, supported by the great Victor Wooten on bass and bad-ass Lenny White on drums was a spectacular treat I'll always remember.
Chick had been there at the beginning of Miles Davis' new electric sound, beginning in Feb. 1969 with "In a Silent Way" and later that year, Aug. 1969 with the ground-breaking, "Bitches Brew." So many great young musicians played on those dates.
By 1972, when Chick contributed to the hyper-kinetic jazz-funk classic, "On the Corner", he was already off on his own as a leader in "Return to Forever". Along w. other Miles alumni, Joe Zawinul & Wayne Shorter in "Weather Report", John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra; Herbie Hancock's "Mwandishi", a new form of high-propellent fusion jazz was explored that lit up the firmament. In 2008, Chick & John joined forces again in the "5 Peace Band". Playing each other's compositions they were supported by the best of the next-gen players - Christian McBride on bass, Kenny Garrett on sax, and monster percussionist, Vinnie Coluiata.
    ruclips.net/video/Culg50fKK8E/видео.html.
Great thanks and blessings to Chick Corea, whose innovative originality both in playing, composing, recording & band leading set the bar for all who aspire to greatness in music and in life.

When it ended bought tickets to 10:30 show with a little lysergic intervening.... Got to watch John play a little pinball before One Truth Band show in small club/bar in Atlanta 10 years later. Also got to see Shakti in CA. Also saw all of Apocalypse performed at DAR.. The audience wouldn't leave without an encore but John came out and said that's all we know so they repeated a song to everyone's delight.

I realize this is a pretty loose jam, but I wish people under 40 could recognize the difference between authentic musical genius and mastery (you're seeing it here) and commercial product. A music producer can turn any schmuck on the street into a Drake or Lizzo or Billie Eilish and use their algorithmic music to sell iPhones and Visa cards.
A Chick Corea or John McLaughlin or Victor Wooten is a precious gift from the universe that should be savored and studied and inspire young kids to achieve their own mastery, but only a dozen old grey-haired men seem to get it.

    • @nurik
      @nurik 4 года назад

      1) If only old Grey haired *men* are "getting" something, that certainly doesn't speak particularly highly of it.
      2) If it were possible to turn any "schmuck" into Drake, many people would have done it already to great fame and success, clearly its not as basic as you think.

This is the classic setup for thesis - antithesis-synthesis: both are true and all that's necessary to resolve the conflict is to expand your understanding enough to include both. Over here you have instrumental beauty and virtuosity, over there you you have social relevance and timeliness. The whole range is important.

I had the privilege to see him in Indianapolis on his farewell tour. Jimmy Herring's band opened then after McLaughlin's band played a set they played another set together. Some of the finest playing I've ever witnessed!

I am lucky I saw John and the Mahavishnu orchestra, Santana, and Weather Report on a 4th of July in the 70's at the coliseum in Cleveland ( Northfield) and he was my inspiration for guitar playing as was Santana, Jimi hendrix, Jimmy Page, Tommi Iommi, Alvin Lee, Blind Owl, Todd Rundgren, Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies}, Frank Marino, Robin Trower, and so many other killer guitarist who have done it to the max and I mean TO THE MAX. Anyone listening to this right now knows what i mean. Some fantastic incredible artists out here. To bad these generations are fucked up in the head with bullshit. This isnt bullshit, this is real. peace! We made it!

Chick really knows how to launch of this riff, and John is like "launch baby, launch". He's Cape Canaveral here. I saw Jeff Beck do this live recently. Also a treat, but Jeff didn't have the talent with him to make it shine like this.

It's pretty interesting when some of the members of the rival contemporary fusion band of the time plays the tunes of the other band with one of the leading members.

there's nothing wrong with this version. It's not RTF and it's not Mahavishnu Orchestra. Just be glad this even happened. With so many masters of music dying..i would think there was enough good stuff at each show plus the hundreds of authentic bootlegs of both bands out there this should be enough for a crappy audience recording. its not like this is a sbd guys..cmon. Sounds good enough to me.

U are 100% right, In some ways, its vintage JM, Confident, doing what he wants, nit picking, turning nobs talking to the band, smiling, This is more rock in my op, JM seems to intentionally have a heavier distorted sound, unlike the cool, straight dryer sound from the past, But he got rockish with that les paul jr a while back, Thing is though, nobody watching this can judge these cats, Not many alive that can, Maybe les pauls good enough to comment on JM'S different performaces but not something les did, more playing then talking, ,and as u say, Les is also dead like many others.

it cant get much better than this! these guys were probably playing this tune for the first time and it was wonderful watching them struggle through unfamiliar terrain espcially Corea, Wooten and White. Corea and McLaughlin are both technically brilliant soloist along with Wooten a bass innovator and White locking in Wonderfully with Wooten at times and a technical whiz himself on the drum kit. I totally enjoyed this musical exploration.

I was supposed to go see the Wooten Brothers this month in Atlanta (Variety Playhouse April 19th?, I think), but thanks to Coronavirus, that isn’t happening. Really sucks because I’ve wanted to see Victor for so long, and Regi is my real hero. He’s a rarity to see live. Oh well...maybe one day...
