    I like the word "Hotchback".
    My dad has a 2016 Sport. He's 80.
    Practical.
Good crash protection for its size.
Not too big for him to struggle with parking and town.
    Relatively economical.
Peppy enough. Long enough legs on a higher milage trip.
    Good headlights.
High enough seats so him and my mom can board and alight without discomfort.
    Looks pretty in metallic blue.
    Good brakes.
Has a satnav to help for him.
The only things he doesn't like is a lack of rear visibility when parking and he doesn't find it as easy to judge in gaps as his previous car, a 1996 Vectra 1.6.

Have owned a 2014 1.2 Swift for the last 6 years.
55 mpg, £30 per Year tax, cheap to maintain, coming up to 100k miles without a snag, by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. (Makes up for my 3.7 Petrol Jeep Cherokee "Sunday Car" 😂)

  • @PandaEatsPlanetEarth
    @PandaEatsPlanetEarth Год назад +11

I owned one of these for a few years. I've owned much more powerful stuff than this, and yet I always think back to how much I loved this car. Yeah it's a tad noisy, the ride is a bit jumpy, and it's not exactly fast....but find a twisty road and it is absolutely ludicrous fun. I could tear round corners with no trouble whatsoever. The peddles are really well balanced as well and the steering was heavy and so you got some nice feedback.
    I really do miss it.

Awesome review Ian. Reminds me of my Fiesta Zetec. That was slow but just such a blast. Driving from Kendal to Lancaster for work is an awesome driving memory. I miss the raw thrills you get from cars like this. Power isn't everything. It's the noise, feeling of speed and connection to the road that makes it so exciting. 🙂

You're driving this properly! At 7:25, thats what I've been trying to get James to do! Between mother and I, we've had 7 Swifts of various guises (this generation and later) and even the non Sport were revvy and sounded fantastic. The later car mentioned above (ZC32) takes the creature comforts and refinement (same engine, 6 speed 'box and 136 bhp) to the next level, without losing out on the fun. Also, the later cars from around August 2007, they raised the rev limit to 7,100 rpm.

I bought a brand new 15 plate 1.2 Swift and was fairly happy with it for about a year, until by chance I spotted a 62 reg Mini Cooper for sale and fell in love with it on the spot. I swapped the Swift for it and never looked back. The Mini is long gone now too, although I do hanker after it now and again. I currently drive a boring a f Kia 1.25 Picanto, but next year I'm looking to swap it for something a little more exciting. Not a Swift Sport though.

    Good review Ian.
I took a Swift Sport for a test drive on Anglesey about 10 years ago.
I felt the driving position was a little too high for a sporty car and it needed a sixth gear, which I think the Swift got later in its life.

  • @michaeltutty1540

Very nice car, Ian. That generation. swift was a very large step ahead over the previous generation.
Love the notes you make about rear wipers. In the same vein, the old Volvo 240 has an excellent rear wiper. The controls are on the right lever which also holds the control of the rear wiper. Our 81 had a single speed rear wiper and wash controls. On my 90 240, the rear wiper control is on the wiper control column on a 3 position sliding switch. The wipers are full on or will only wipe at a 7 second interval. The wash is on the end of the wiper lever. If your fingers are long enough, all three controls can be done independently and by using your finger to touch the screen.

I will always champion these little cars - this generation of Swift onwards are the best small 3-door hatch on the market all things considered.
They're a riot to drive, fantastically packaged, pretty, interesting and the 'Sport' trim actually means something unlike 99% of cars. I drove a brand new 1.0 Boosterjet (3 cylinder turbo) Swift recently and I was absolutely blown away by it. I'm certain I will be looking to buy one at some point in the near future.

Currently looking at buying a 59 plate one, looks like it might be red on the rev counter at 6800rpm, but what’s the difference between that and the 7200rpm ones? Just that you can rev them higher? Doesn’t seem to be any difference in performance right through the Z31S range

  • @jo05dk
    @jo05dk 2 года назад +6

160BHP? That would surprise me. If i remember correctly they came with 125HP, which must equate to 121-123BHP. Is there a special version i haven't heard of? Another thing: At 60 you say it turns "over 3000rpm", but at 70 you said "getting on for 3800 revs". That's quite the gearing if true. That aside: I've known of people who've owned Suzukis that have been rebuilding gearboxes at 180K kilometers, so i'll believe the box in this one is crap too. ..and because i've seen examples of Suzukis that haven't been built to last, i won't be buying one. But i've always like the Swift Sport, and have seen lots of great reviews on them. Fun little thing :)

Fuel economy is very good, 40+ easily achieved if you can resist caning everywhere. Downsides are parts availability and cost, and insurance is pretty expensive for the performance (likely due to the parts cost and availability!).

The A399 from South Molton to Brayford and then on to Combe Martin is one of the best roads in the uk IMHO. So varied with lots of challenging technical sections, sections which seem to repeat themselves and some long straight bits. Great in most cars. Best avoided for most of the summer but epic when quiet. Don't shout about it or it will get spoiled with low speed limits. Only willing to share this with Hubnutters 😉

Much much safer than my 106 GTI but the price is it's not as entertaining or quick back in the day. Also they eat wheel bearings with those big wheels.
But it would be temping as they're easy to work on and maintain.

Well nice ride, reliable and all Sports are made in Japan, not in Hungary. I used to have a 1.6 GLX saloon Swift as my first car, it was 850 kg, and 92 bhp. quite fast, I had it for about 14 years, it just rusted away I guess sold in in 2009 and it drove around till 2012. I miss it, the saloon is very rare nowadays , they were also in 1.3 liter.

I remember looking at a swift in the mid nineties, it had an led display for the speed & revs, seriously impressed a few of us.
Amazing what we thought was cool as teenagers!
Unfortunately the swift isn’t a car for the taller drivers 😞

Great bargain small hatchbacks wont fall to bits like the French equivalents in Thailand very popular but only 1.25 litre CVT available many with Union Jacks on the roofs and wing mirrors on these like Minis

I like this. I see a GM steering wheel. Unfortunately, Suzuki left the US market around 10 years ago. Practical with some oomph!
    Definitely consider this a 2+2.
Very nice review, thank you very much!

A 16 year old hot hatch that has survived intact shows that they were not as popular with the boy racers as a Golf, Fiesta. or a Peugeot.

It depends on the owner. I have a SEAT Ibiza FR and I had contemplated modifying it but the more I thought about it when driving over pot holes and getting a bad back I thought nah I will keep it stock and well looked after. Had mine nearly 9 years now, I am its first owner and literally the only things that have been majorly replaced so far are two from suspension coils and shocks last year (due to the UK's ultra smooth roads) and two windscreens due to flying debris. I have got a list of little things that require doing next and these are front anti roll bar bushes as they commonly start to squeak after a while on VW made vehicles and there is a faint wheel bearing sound just starting to be heard, but overall the rest of the car touch wood is mechanically sound.

Suzuki quoted 134 bhp. ECU might be chipped, but I doubt it. Even then the power gain will be so much.

Love the Suzuki swift, I learned to drive In one, I even looked at them recently having got out of my HP contract in favour of Bangernomics given the current cost of living rise.

my dad had a 1,5 vvt from 2005 - bought it new, and drove it to 330.000 kms, with absolutely the bare minimum of servicing, the only thing it was bad on it were the front wishbones, the bushings died after 60k kms at the most. oh and a radiator that packed up which he thought was a headgasket, new headgasket fitted at 160k kms - the bores looked like new...

First car I ever bought was a 1 litre 90s Swift 'Sky' for a few hundred £s off eBay. They shared the same platform as the Subaru Justy which was the same car but 4 wheel drive. It was great for what I needed and came in the most awesome colour - cobalt blue, best colour car I've owned! Very basic and tiny 3 cylinder engine but my 'limited edition' Sky came with Oz alloys, a spoiler, blue dials and nice bucket seats. I took it everywhere, up and down the country, then when it developed a gear box whine and the underside rusted through I took it on a trip to Belgium as a final drive. It was the second Suzuki I owned (first was inherited) and it concreted the reliability of Japanese cars for me. It's a shame that era Suzuki was terrible for rust as it's killed almost all of them. Always liked the new shaped Swifts and considered buying one but it never happened. These when they came out in 2005 (after a 2 year break, the last gen Swift stopped in 03) were a big step up for Suzuki and pushed them to the forefront of the hatchback lineup, competing with models they never could do previously.

Great Video. I did wonder if you had encountered 'Chops Garage' and James.
'Hubnut' and 'Chops' are my two favorite sites.
So thx for the Entertainment guys. I like the little Suzuki swift. Having test driven one a few years ago.
Much to my Disappointment I bought a Holden. 😢
Mainly because my Son being 6ft 7in. Just struggled to get in the front Passenger seat, let alone the Back. And my other halfs knees made it all just, Not Practical at all..!
As a foot note, I hate the Holden. The other half drives that now. I now Drive an Australian Ford Capri XR2 Turbo.
That my son has to fold himself into too..!!
A 'Win Win in my book..!!'
    Great video Ian and James.
    Cheers kim in Oz 😎

They stopped selling Suzuki cars in North America. You can still find them second hand, but I’ve yet to see one for sale not suffering from rust.

You should try and get your hands on a modern Swift sport, the 1.4 turbo engine is a ripper. Also love the fact you went to the trouble of importing an AU falcon to the UK - never thought I would see that on youtube. I just sold my FG XR6 and miss it already.
