Back when Peugeot made absolute weapons that were too fast for their own good but still affordable for a young lad. Slow by todays standards but back then absolute weapons.
I still love the fact the 208 GTI "kinda" runs its legacy. I know its turbo-charged, makes much more HP and the fun factor potentially goes down with all the electronics truly interrupting the ultimate driving feel but i'm just happy Peugeot didn't niglect completey the GTI lineup. Now a good used one is quite affordable where I live which is nice as well and definitely considering it a future car.
The Peugbro is still my fav as this is breaking new ground on a platform that both M&M have no worked on. I'm excited to see them track this again as they seem to be having a blast.
Those little 206's are known in the UK for being pretty bulletproof simple cheap easy to get parts for apart from rust and the odd electrical issue they're not that bad and you can buy one for like £500
I've seen people running 206s with no oil or coolant. Let's be honest here, the 206 is a bulletproof car and cheap to run, the only issue would be finding parts in Australia where I'm guessing they aren't that common. In Euroland they're everywhere so you can just go to the scrap and find whatever body panel or part you seek for cheap. Also this is the internet, the Americans won't be voting on online polls for French cars, because even though they've never seen one IRL they believe they're terrible "because French lol".
Their Achilles heel (very appropriately) is the rear axle - the trailing arms pivot on needle bearings which rot away along with the stub that they mount on and the rear wheels develop a large amount of negative camber, sometimes so much that the tyres rub the inner arches! Entire rear axle replacement required every few years. There are entire companies that specialise in supply of refurbed axles. It's not a particularly expensive or difficult job to do the swap at least. Possibly in the Australian climate it's not so much of an issue.
yeah with tires, brakes, suspension, exhaust and tune, thats about all you'll need to jump to the next level. but it will be interesting to see what mods they decide to go with
The 206 is a reliable beast, seriously this mechanic's opinion is surprising. Here in France they are still driving EVERYWHERE. They are very solid. French cars are really poor reliability between 2004-2012 era. The 206 is solid. The 207 with the 1.6 however is a tick bomb
Thanks for returning to accessible cars that we can all relate to. New performance VWs and Lotuses etc are all very nice, but they just aren’t our reality. Also, it’s always more fun to go fast in a slow car than to go slowly in a fast car!
@@leejohnson6173 - Lee you old money bags you. Wait here while I pop off to purchase my rare 270 with a built RB for a couple grand like the swift. Lol
My mate’s a mechanic, he’s had a 206 for 9 years now. He hated French motors until he acquired it but he loves his little Pug and says it’s the best car he’s ever owned for value/dependability. Still goes and handles well too!
I have an almost identical Swift Sport (same colour and all) that is in the process of being set up as a track car. So far it's had the interior stripped, suspension done, roll cage, race seat & harness, exhaust, intake, wheels, semi slick tyres, motor still stock and a Chopped keyring. Ran a 56 at the same track. Got cams and a tune in the pipeline. Would be great to compare and see your build progress. It's a ton of fun.
This is a great series and awesome to see a cheap entry into track racing. Even better to see a couple of mates getting out there and having such a laugh and 100% just enjoying the competitiveness this encourages!
As a Peugbro owner i loved it, this will be an awesome series. And yes the backend of those baggets are way too light, witch is fun as hell. Can't wait to see the next episode!
Lift off oversteer has nothing to do with having torsion bars vs coil springs. Both the Swift and the Pug have somewhat similar rear suspension designs (i.e. trailing arms) that provide zero camber control of the rear wheels which is why they are so eager to step out when you lift off.
@@ferrumignis this is not the torsion bar you are thinking about, in this case "torsions bar" refers to a specific sort of semi-dependent trailing arm suspension
This is going to be an amazing series. I hope it becomes an annual thing, the ultra-cheap track nugget showdown. I just want to see these regular little cars no one thinks about stripped bare and loud as.
@@Wirenfeldt1990 A spicy Clio is a very good choice, best choice when it comes to French cars from the past 20/25 years... or a spicy Megane. What also could be fun is a '04/'05 Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI RS if they can get one in Aussieland. Those 1.9 TDI engines make about 95~100kW standard but just with a basic tune it will do at least 120kW and with some reasonable cheap performance parts it will do well over 130kW... lots of potential for little money. TG has done a bit on it where one of those outpaced a Mini Cooper S... only but is that the TDI Fabia is very front heavy and with standard suspension it's terrible in the corners.
In Europe 206 is one of the most reliable cars. All engines are very reliable, they are cheap and easy to maintain and you have a plenty of parts everywhere. Also, it is the last car that was sold more then VW Golf. It is interesting how reputation of one car is changed in different regions of the world.
It's easy to forget how much location plays in, as here in Norway it's kinda the opposite, the 206 is cheap and easy to find parts for, the Swift Sport isn't sold in Norway, as Suzuki Norway only sells AWD Suzukis, though some people did special order some, so there's like 6 Swift Sports in Norway in total, parts having to be special ordered in some cases, as they don't have FWD bits at the Suzuki dealerships. That said though, as a friend of mine used to work at a Suzuki dealership he owned one of the 6 Swift Sports in Norway, and test driving it both when stock, and when on coilovers and 18" OZ magnesium wheels, it is a car that is quite glued to the road, but their proportions feel strange, like the roof is super tall when stood next to one. Haven't driven a normal 206, but they were incredibly common on the road, to the point of there being 206 racing leagues. I did however get driving lessons in a 206CC as my grandmother used to have one, most I remember of that was how annoyed I got at not having low RPM torque, so exiting a roundabout in 2nd gear to go up a small hill, I ended up having to downshift into 1st, which I was not used to having to do at all.
Even though the Swift Sport was available in the UK, parts are still expensive and there is much less aftermarket support compared to European brands. That also affects insurance, my Swift Sport insurance was nearly 50% higher than a newer, more valuable and more powerful Golf GTi. The Swift is far more fun to drive though.
Marty knows how I feel driving home every night at 8pm in an ancient 206GTI along the A70 from Edinburgh. Some long straight stretches and some hairpin bends. Always legal speeds but still great fun. I love the Peugbros.
I think if the peugeot had exactly the same tires as the swift, it would smash it, they look slightly skinnier on video. Pretty funny considering its a slow poverty spec 206 compared to a swift sport lol. Great video as always, i had lots of fun watching marty be so entertained and happy
Couldn't agree more. The GTI was the same price as Moog's Swift, prettier than the Swift (IMO), and would have spanked the Swift around the track. Plus I love to see cars we can't get here in the States.
Am i the only one wishing the 206 winning the race? 😂 I hope they won't put an loud exhaust and just put on a High flow air intake cause it really sounds amazing with one.
I'm more excited about this series than I have been for ages. There's something so relatable about buying cheap little hatchbacks (not even the hot versions) a la what everyone learnt to drive in, then tweaking them.
Sending French nuggets way harder then they were designed for has been my entire driving life in the UK! Glad to see Australia isn't missing out on the fun
@@edwardfletcher7790 here we are in Europe, where 206 parts cost about a tenth of parts for a Subaru legacy. A 206 needs a bit more parts though. But it’s probably the cheapest way to go around here if you can fix the small things yourself.
@@autobootpiloot Subaru parts are always expensive unfortunately. They don't make enough cars to bring large volume discounts from parts suppliers like Toyota can.
can't wait for the next episode, if you've ever driven a SSS you know that feeling of going into a corner at 'full speed' knowing you'll make that overtake.
I love this! As a swift owner I know exactly how the drive feels and its usually the most fun when the car you're battling it out with is around the same performance.
I'm usually interested in track test segments of videos for about a lap and then I'm over it. Not this time though! It was so fun to see how much fun they were having. You could really tell they enjoyed being out there just thrashing those cars. Well done mates!
If marty brought the Gti or 180 instead , those will blow the door away of that jdm overated hatch . Kinda dumb pitting against a swift sport with a xsi .
This is what car racing really should be about... Real cars being driven hard, none of the fake cars in the big races now that have nothing to do with their production counterparts. Well done guys, looked like you had a ball!
I think we can safely conclude that it doesn't matter what cars you are driving, racing your best mate in evenly matched cars with a splash of banter will always be a blast.
I think you'll be surprised how good the 206 will be. They are mega light and once stripped out you can get them sub 900kg easy and that's a solid engine in it. So light in the back you just drive them like an old Mini, steer it on the throttle and just drag the back round with you. I used to have a Saxo which was the same chassis and they are brilliant fun.
Can't wait to see what comes of this, both cars are great, and look like immense fun! BTW, the rear end coming out on hard corners is (or was) Peugeot/Citroën hot hatch tradition, the 205 ,106, AX and saxo were known for having quite loose rear ends that could get sketchy at higher speeds, especially in less capable hands (also, if there is ever to be a follow up to what is looking like an absolutely amazing series, you guys should try to go a size smaller! When you get down to those sub 800kg "as standard" euro nugs you find a whole new realm of madness)
As the owner of a saxo +- 900kilo with fluids I can relate, they are so much fun. Don't have much trouble with the back end then again never tracked it and have wider tires
I had a 2006 Swift Sport as a daily, probably the most fun I've had driving a nugget. It came with front and rear sway bars + I added coilovers and RE003 tyres. The car handled like it was glued to the road and really could take a beating, lol!
As a 13 year swift owner, the only way to considerably improve the understeer situation in a swift is a 2.5 to 3 degree negative camber in the rear, either with camber shims like you can buy from ctc performance or a home made mix and match of washers. If you don’t know what you’re doing, just buy the shims
Considering the Suzuki is the "Sport" and the 206 is the standard shopping car I think it done really well. Had it been the GTI then there would have been no comparison.
I own a 206 1.4 HDI with 250k km on it and I never had an issue. The car is super fun, you can push it to redline every single time and trash it like it's nothing. 28km/l (65mpg for 'murica) if driven a bit more conservatly. And a way too soft suspension setup that gives you no grip whatsoever so that if you go a bit faster the back always comes out. Such a fun car
I complained about you not getting a 206 gti and getting a bottom of the range one but after seeing this a gti would wipe the floor with that swift. That’s the fastest swift and that’s not even the 3rd fastest version of the 206
The GTi has a 2.0L engine making a supossed ~180bhp, in which universe would it be suprising that it's faster than a simillary sized 1.6L car making 123bhp? In other news the Renault Clio 182 is faster than a 1.0L Toyota Yaris.
The rear end of the 206 is coming out because it has passive rear steering. If you get the rear axle from a GTi 180 (not the GTi 138hp), it has extra bars that remove that "feature".
Agreed - the gearbox on the 206 wouldn't last long with a turbo. It was designed to cope with small capacity NA SOHC engines - the torque of a turbo will snap it like it's a carrot! There is a factory gearbox upgrade available, but probably impossible to find in Australia (and needs some other expensive mods to make it work).
This video takes me back. My first car was a 206 and say what you want but that car was so much fun for me. I got rid of it and replaced it with a 206RC that's still in my garage as my second car.
I actually have the 1.4 turbo version of the swift sport and you can really throw it around due to it being a lot ligher than the older 1.6 NA model and extremely torquey at the low end
Freaking love you guys! You really made this Automotive RUclips thing what it is today and we would all be poorer without you. Thank you SO much for doing content like this and inspiring all us little channels! Life goals guys, life goals! Edit : "You should be heel and toeing" ;)
Who says you need an expensive sports car to have a blast? That battle had me grinning from ear to ear the entire time. So much more fun driving a slow car at it's absolute limits. The smoke! The squeeling tires! The random moments of understeer and oversteer. The multiple near misses. Utter chaos. And we loved every second of it.
So not true about French cars, issues and parts. I've done hundreds of laps in 40 degree heat in a Renault Clio Sport from 2001, with 200,000kms on it with zero issues. Cheapest, most reliable track car I've ever had. Parts are cheap from the UK and very easy to get.
Never trust a mechanic who says French cars are rubbish. They're actually very good. Find a competent mechanic with skills, tools and appreciation for these cars and they cost no more than any other brand to maintain. Also, DIY what you can. I love French cars and will continue buying them. Full of character and great to drive.
Usually when mechanic is recommending you a certain car, what he means is he is recommending a car that he will make a lot of money on from all the future work on it.
Skills, tools, and appreciation are jack shit when you cannot get parts and the engineering is shit.. 😂😂😂 Never trust a person questioning a mechanic that does mechanic work everyday... because as a mechanic, I would always go for the easier to work on and parts galore over the other..
I got a 206 Quicksilver and never ever had any technical problems with it. It was faster than my Mitsubishi Lancer 1,8L . Miss this little Nugget so much.
I didn't believe it until I experienced it. But pugs with some mods love to lift off oversteer. I went for a ride in a 306 gti6 (? There are maybe a handful of them in Australia literally) but I instantly loved the mity pug after that. Such a capable platform
That really was the best and most laughed at episode of MCM I've ever watched! As a Peugeot owner here in Ireland I very tempted to get a 206 to just take to the track for the same reasons as the two of you, for the Shits and Giggles 🤣
the dear BSI and BSM, the internal contacts break down continuously, and many of them do not have a spare part at the factory,,,,, (you have to look for an astute electronic to repair them).🎉
Correct BSI controls accessories, but also the gasoline pump, (which is what breaks down the most in the BSI, as it carries more tension). Here in the EU there is a lot of second-hand market, since it is not found new.
Had a bunch of French cars 106 GTI 205 1.9 GTI with a 1.6 gearbox 205 1.6 GTI Standard 205 GTI with MI16 engine 206 GTI 306 GTI 306 Dturbo All felt like stirring porridge when you touched the gearstick. The 306 Dturbo was good fun just turn up fuel pump and open wastegate and it felt like a socket but kicked a ton of smoke. The 205 mi16 was very quick but front heavy due to cast iron bottom end. The 205 1.9 with a 1.6 spot felt awesome and hands down one of the most fun cars i have driven. The 306 GTI had the turning circle of a boat, the 206 gti felt heavy and horrid. This said my mates standard Fiesta ST and other mates more modern golf gti would probably have chopped every one of these cars around a track. 205's though seriously awesome cars, but these days cost so much its not justifiable you can have just as much fun in an old mini. They feel allot like a mini funny enough they feel tight and small, lift off oversteer, feel so rapid like your doing 100mph but your in reality doing like 30. Good cars at giving you that false sense of properly going for it. The 106 GTI also comes close but the 205 takes it over the 106 for me, and at a similar price i would take the 205 any day, lovely cars though. Oh 1 more thing about the French cars the rear beams always go bad on them they have a torsion bar setup.
Considering Marty spent less than half of what Moog did on his car, and how well Marty's 206 was keeping up at the track, I think Marty got the better base car deal here.
I'm Portuguese, and Peugeot 206 are very common here, and the complaints you mechanic put on the Peugeot, we complaint about Suzuki. That peugeot engine can be built to be over 200HP on N/A form... It's expensive but doable... The Peugeot/Citroen are not unreliable, not any more than any other low cost car... Keep oil changes on about every 10k KM and it will take you around the world! And the chassis on that 206, with the right suspension and tires, will wipe the floor with that Suzuki!
I really hope Marty is going to go completely nuts on modifying the Peugeot. I'm thinking adjustable suspension, tires, ITB build or engine swap, maybe both. Make this new 2Sexy build, only more scuffed.
I remember my first car, a 1989 Honda civic hatchback. Made a whopping 90hp and completely in stock shape, it was so much fun to drive on the track. Sadly, I was just having so much fun, did like 10-12 hot laps and as a result the engine overheated and seized. So cooling performance is one thing that holds back, but apart from that you don't need a lot of performance to have fun on a track, a good performance value in my mind is ~10kg/hp, not fast but not slow either.
Totally agree. Now if it was a 205 or 306 Gti it might be a different story, but I'd still bet on the Swift to hold itself together for far longer. I had an AX GTi for a while and the interior was like a clown car, stuff falling off in your hand all the time. Fun little car though.
I daily my 3 door Swift Sport and have owned it since new. The best upgrade I made was ditching the recommended Eagle F1 tyres and switching to a set of Yokohamas. The understeer disappeared. It's great as a daily. You can thrash it everywhere and have fun without the fear you get from more powerful cars, i.e. you don't have to do highly illegal speeds to have fun.
I've got the swift base model and the best and cheapest modifications to make the car 10x better is some bucket seats, coilovers, tyres and cold air intake. the cheapest and easiest modifications to do.

@@daktari nothing to add !
Burn it, worst car i ever had, almost everything broke even had to swap in a new engine.
@@ElySky95 strange, that's a truly solid car, no joke
Which engine it was ?
Their Achilles heel (very appropriately) is the rear axle - the trailing arms pivot on needle bearings which rot away along with the stub that they mount on and the rear wheels develop a large amount of negative camber, sometimes so much that the tyres rub the inner arches! Entire rear axle replacement required every few years. There are entire companies that specialise in supply of refurbed axles. It's not a particularly expensive or difficult job to do the swap at least. Possibly in the Australian climate it's not so much of an issue.
The amount of smiles and enthusiasm in this video is impeccable. Can’t wait to see more!
This could be the greatest showdown in MCM history. Also probably the most fun I've seen you guys have in cars in quite some time.
I can't remember the last time I saw you two having so much fun at a track day. Awesome content. Best channel on RUclips! Can't wait for the mods.
This series turs out to be epic! Looking forward to seeing them modified!
yeah with tires, brakes, suspension, exhaust and tune, thats about all you'll need to jump to the next level. but it will be interesting to see what mods they decide to go with
I love them intensely driving their nuggets while the Yaris is relaxed and following them like a parent
This for me, is exactly what MCM is all about
The 206 is a reliable beast, seriously this mechanic's opinion is surprising.
What everyone has been thinking for a long time.
Agreed
When have they ever had unattainable cars?..Never have I seen a super rare or expensive car on here and I have been watching them since day one.

Tons of parts available to upgrade the 206. The S16 and XSi FWD are still ultra common in rally racing in Europe.

That Peugeot can be faster without gas 😂 i owned one xd
Looking forward to marty learning about torsion bar suspension..! Lift of oversteer for the win!
I was just about to write the same thing
Lift off oversteer has nothing to do with having torsion bars vs coil springs. Both the Swift and the Pug have somewhat similar rear suspension designs (i.e. trailing arms) that provide zero camber control of the rear wheels which is why they are so eager to step out when you lift off.
@@ferrumignis this is not the torsion bar you are thinking about, in this case "torsions bar" refers to a specific sort of semi-dependent trailing arm suspension
@@ferrumignis the 206 lift off oversteers because of the rubber beam mounts. They allow the whole thing to twist, changing the toe + camber angles.
@@tiagobelo4965 Are you thinking of a Panhard bar?
This is going to be an amazing series. I hope it becomes an annual thing, the ultra-cheap track nugget showdown. I just want to see these regular little cars no one thinks about stripped bare and loud as.

A spicy Clio would be nice
@Wirenfeldt1990 I wish Marty went for a similar era Clio Sport, I had one about 12yrs ago and have been thinking of getting another recently.
A sleepy Volvo please 😂
I'm super excited to see the weight changes once you totally strip those out
I think if the peugeot had exactly the same tires as the swift, it would smash it, they look slightly skinnier on video. Pretty funny considering its a slow poverty spec 206 compared to a swift sport lol. Great video as always, i had lots of fun watching marty be so entertained and happy
The Swift Sport’s engine is missing about 25hp though, definitely needs some work because 100hp isn’t what this car usually has.
@@johnjuiceshipper4963same with the 206 it may not be 25 horses but at least 10

This is by far my favourite battle you guys have ever done, its so even and you guys seem like you're having so much fun battling so close
I really enjoyed the genuine experience of fun that you both had on the track. 😃
Don't have much trouble with the back end then again never tracked it and have wider tires
aygo's, 107's and c1's are great fun on a track
I had a 2006 Swift Sport as a daily, probably the most fun I've had driving a nugget. It came with front and rear sway bars + I added coilovers and RE003 tyres. The car handled like it was glued to the road and really could take a beating, lol!
I have never seen Marty drive so hard and seem so happy. ❤
I actually cant wait for the mods in this series and the results of the mods, that was so fun to watch
As a longtime owner of a 206 RC, I don't understand what you're complaining about 206.
Imagin driving a sponge while turning and changing gears with a string
As a 13 year swift owner, the only way to considerably improve the understeer situation in a swift is a 2.5 to 3 degree negative camber in the rear, either with camber shims like you can buy from ctc performance or a home made mix and match of washers. If you don’t know what you’re doing, just buy the shims
There’s nothing quite like getting off of work and getting a new MCM video
Who needs sleep as well when there's a new MCM video, honestly? 😂
Considering the Suzuki is the "Sport" and the 206 is the standard shopping car I think it done really well. Had it been the GTI then there would have been no comparison.
I think we’re gonna have another 2SEXY moment with Martin falling in love with his peugbro, he’s gonna want to turn into a build, and I cannot wait! 😎

And he was the first person to say it
People have been saying this for decades.
captain slow also said that and nobody believed at that time :)
In other news the Renault Clio 182 is faster than a 1.0L Toyota Yaris.

i really hope you make the 206 maaaad. maybe an ITB build rather than a turbo?
That would sound maaaad! And on a tight track like this one, it would probably do quite well.
+1 for the ITB build, those french NA engines sound mad when they are allowed to breathe
@@nizzan91 So does the Swift engine.
I can smell the head gasket and flat spotted tyres from here 🤣
I actually have the 1.4 turbo version of the swift sport and you can really throw it around due to it being a lot ligher than the older 1.6 NA model and extremely torquey at the low end

That really was the best and most laughed at episode of MCM I've ever watched! As a Peugeot owner here in Ireland I very tempted to get a 206 to just take to the track for the same reasons as the two of you, for the Shits and Giggles 🤣
The 206 has sway bars inside the rear subframe, that Can be upraded If needed. I’d do that on mine as a track car!
I Also recommend a fully 2” exhaust for it for optimal flow! Gave mine like 10-14 hp. A cup intake Also give it more of a kick Down low
I can't wait for you to find the BSI unit that Peugeot uses instead of an ecu 😂
the dear BSI and BSM, the internal contacts break down continuously, and many of them do not have a spare part at the factory,,,,, (you have to look for an astute electronic to repair them).🎉
They have an ECU, the BSI controls some of the auxiliary electronics, the engine can still run without a BSI with a custom ECU just fine.
I read BS unit at first
Correct BSI controls accessories, but also the gasoline pump, (which is what breaks down the most in the BSI, as it carries more tension). Here in the EU there is a lot of second-hand market, since it is not found new.

All felt like stirring porridge when you touched the gearstick.
The 1.6L 206 also is a base spec road model. The sport version has a 2L (S16/XSi/GTi).

My father had a Peugbro 203, worm drive diff, lever arm suspension. The 203 won the first Redex trial. Take them on a reliability trial around Aus. :)
That Swift is going to get swiftly chopped so hard once the 206 is in track mode 😂
Marty needs a Renaultsport Clio 1*2. Seriously good French nugget.
This is brilliant to watch, the MCM of old. Keep it up lads, loving this series so far.

Totally agree. Now if it was a 205 or 306 Gti it might be a different story, but I'd still bet on the Swift to hold itself together for far longer. I had an AX GTi for a while and the interior was like a clown car, stuff falling off in your hand all the time. Fun little car though.
