GH5 was sooo ahead it's competition when it first came out and I think it is and will be still an amazing tool for quite a while! I've been using it since 2019 and heck, it was everywhere with me!

Literally just posting this to another thread. Lumix user for MANY YEARS. GH5, GH5S, G85, GX85, GX8, S5, S5II:
I do a lot of travel documentary production work. I tend to grab a MFT camera when I’m in a moving vehicle shooting sideways unless it’s getting dark. Rolling shutter is noticeable. 😂 But for 80% of the time, it’s a fantastic camera. I use the EF Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 for most of my work and it’s freaking amazing quality. My second most used lens is a Canon 135mm f/2L USM. It’s unreal. Both lenses are adapted and AF works extremely well. Skin tones are better on the S5 than the S5II, but no camera is 100% perfect. You have to get out of the mindset of “one camera to rule them all…” and during your storytelling journey, you’ll understand the strengths and limitations of your gear. And even when looking at limitations, you balance that with what gets you the best results! I just got back from a trip into the jungles of Guatemala. I took the S5II as my primary cam, along with the previously mentioned 24-70 and the 135. That’s it on the lenses. I’m sure folks are like “WTH!?!….I’d take X, Y and Z….” My second cam was an OM-5. Yep. A little MFT cam. Had the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 Lens and the OG Panasonic Limix G X Vario 35-100MM, F2.8 ASPH Lens. Both those lenses are pretty old by today’s standards. But I can get absolutely incredible quality with them because I know how to use them and dial them in with relative ease. Yes. I have many other lenses for my S5II. 16-35, Lumix 50 & Sigma Art 50, 85, 70-200, 70-300, and even the old Sigma Art 18-35 f/1.8. But I didn’t need them. The gear I took with me, along with lights, drone, mics and batteries, got the job done. Too much gear for a single shooter in crazy tough conditions, creates completely unnecessary problems. The S5II is a tank. It works. And I agree 100% that the 6K open gate spoils us absolutely rotten. And if it doesn’t do what I need, I grab the camera that can offer what it’s missing. That’s just me though. I’m not trying to outfit all of the internet with gear. I’m just trying to pay bills, provide for the family, tell some amazing stories, have a little fun along the way and live a life that hopefully shines some light into the darkness of world.

Thank you for these comments, and if you get a chance, check out the G85, GX85 bodies...I think you'll like the footage AND IBIS/STAB better than the OM-5, but the AF and build quality are better on that one maybe?

    Great Video!
Thought I would chime in since I've owned a Micro four Thirds camera, an APS-C Sony camera, and currently shoot with a full frame Sony A7RII and a Spotmatic SP. The difference is minimal and Micro Four Thirds is more than adequate. The reason I like having full frame is because I mainly shoot with vintage glass like my Helios 44m-4 and my Minolta Celtic 135mm f3.5. Adapting these to smaller sensors just didn't work as well. I mainly like full frame because it gets the most out of my vintage glass, but I might be in the minority for my reasoning on being a full frame user. In my experience if your using the right prime lenses than micro four thirds is a strong rival against full frame especially if your managing your settings, lighting, audio, editing, etc. to get the full potential out of your camera.

They do look similar, but there's still something about the mft that makes everything look "flatter". I'm not sure if that makes sense but that's the only word that comes to mind. And I edited a few videos for a client in 2022 were they used V-Log L, and there was a terrible magenta shift because I don't think they shot it correctly.

    • @outsidetherapyexperience
      @outsidetherapyexperience 4 месяца назад

to me it looks like a color shift from warmer to cooler plus some loss in the shadows. gh5 shadows look lighter, not as deep. i had to toggle back and forth multiple times and those were the differences that jumped out to me. i personally don't think that it has anything to do with sensor and everything to do with color. framing and bokeh are basically identical except the slight shift of the frame position when switching cameras. it's a great comparison.

ok. so the exercise could be to match m43 and FF footage in some other different shooting situations (and beyond VlogL/Vlog setting). it seems promising.

Lumix GH5 is such an awesome camera for video even today with all its specs, features and the fact that the lense collection is various and mostly cheap. One small downside is that you need to pay attention to the AF. In my situation mostly 90% of normal situations it gets the AF fine. Lumix GH5 and Sony A7III user.

Coming from your experiences with the Gh3 and the gh4, what are your thoughts on the GH5? I have one and absolutely love it! Although it slightly lacks in high ISO and photography for me. But for well lit videos, it’s awesome!

the aperature equivalence doesn’t apply to the amount of light that the camera receives. So like the f1.4 on mft would get the same amount of light as a f1.4 on ff. what changes is the field of view equivalence, so a f1.4 on mft looks like a f2.8 on ff, depth of field wise. that is why you had to turn the light dowm formthe exposure, though it does give a “advantage” to micro four thirds if you dont like a lot of bokeh but need lower apertures for low light situations. its why I personally enjoy mft a lot, I use f3.5 to get an f7 equiv depth of field on street photos, but still the exposure and iso of using f3.5.

I was going to mention the same thing. I agree that it’s definitely an advantage especially for run and gun video. I use a GH6 and GH5 with that same sigma lens and love it. ND filter for outdoors in sunlight is a must if you want to keep some shallow depth of field for video.

I recently got a Panasonic G9II in addition to my A7III and I must say for video I prefer the G9II. It’s small, has amazing video capabilities, probably the best stabilization on any camera that is on the market today and just a ton of features i miss on sony

I’ve been looking for my first mirrorless camera. Comparing hybrids for video and photo work. Would you say the S5ii is on par with the Sony A74 and the Canon R6ii? Some people still say the autofocus isn’t quite as good on the S5ii. Thoughts? Thanks

I have a Sony a7r3 and a GH6; the 10 bit all I out of the GH six looks worlds better than the eight bit out of the Sony full frame. I know it’s not apples to apples comparison but when you see what a micro for third camera can do, you don’t have to question the sensor size

I think the GH7 will reset people's expectations for M43. It will have the great IQ we expect of the GH line, and ofc it will finally come with PDAF! Not sure how M43 will beat that going forward, other than making minimal alterations to subsequent editions, but nevertheless the GH7 ought to be a great hybrid camera. I recently switched from full frame (s5) to the G9, mostly due to the fact I prefer the smaller lens size, and the fact m43 has a way better lens selection than L-mount. There isn't much difference in IQ, tho the s5 was a beast in low light, whilst the g9 isn't quite at that level. So I'd still 100% recommend M43 to newcomers, there are some great cameras, and more importantly: some awesome lens for the system too!

  • @destinybond

You were shooting f 1.4 of the m4/3 vs f2.8 on full frame, of course f1.4 is brighter.
The aperture vs sensor size only affects the depth of field not the brightness. F1.4 is f1.4 no matter the sensor size.

I have the GH6 and S5ii. I used the GH6 with the Leica 25-50 1.7 and the images were great. Yea its the best lens lumix makes for m43 and its a video lens but I was trying to convince myself that it was not a full Frame look. I even got super nice images out of the GH4 with the Leica 42.5mm 1.2

Photographs from a full frame camera has a fuller and life like look than those of cropped sensor cameras. You have to work a thousand times harder with a cropped sensor camera to get a good image that is remotely approaching that of a full frame camera. Also, I would never buy a cropped sensor camera because all the zoom lenses for cropped sensor cameras are too slow and not bright, causing you to increase the ISO level, making the image quality to lessen. If the manufacturers are not producing zoom lenses for cropped sensor cameras that have a constant f1.4 or faster, then don't bother because you are just wasting your time and money on shitty products and results.

You really have no clue what you talking about. There are 1.7 zoom lenses for mft. Where you get a 20-50 or a 50-100 1.7 for full frame? I do all my professional foto and video shoots with mft and i have absolutely no problems making it look good.
