This newcomer to the Australian EV scene has runs on the board globally, and is looking to take on the budget end of the spectrum. However, the BYD Atto 3 offers some impressive features and nice touches that belie the low asking price.
Our test vehicle, the 2023 BYD Atto 3 Superior Extended Range - fitted with the larger 60kWh battery pack - is priced from $48,081 before on-road costs, which includes the $3000 premium for the larger battery and $700 for the optional Surf Blue paint.

Just over 2 months owning this in NZ and loving it so far.. Integrated navigation and Spotify came in the last update few weeks ago.. The range of above 300km in highway is more than achievable.. we have owners doing city driving achieving the claimed 420km..
How do you find the boot space? Also where in NZ are you? Kāpiti here, and keen to know how it would go into the city and back.
@@faimasulu I am in Auckland.. boot space is reasonable.. recently I had put in a large luggage 24kgs, a stroller abd 2 carryons. It was a tight fit tho.
I don't think you will have any issues from kapiti to Welly and back. Less than 50% usage.. depending on how aggressive you drive.
@@justanotherriderNZ Thanks, really appreciate the quick response. I drove one very briefly a couple of weeks ago for a few minutes, not expecting to like it - but I was really impressed. I was interested about fitting a stroller in the boot, so glad you mentioned that.
A few corrections. As someone commented below the front vents are actually open to the front wheels and you can see that if you have a look. I am getting close to 400km range on the highway and I have had the car for 4 weeks. The charging is listed as 80kw max but I have seen these cars charging at closer to 90kw on fast chargers that are rated at over 100kw. The tyres certainly aren't the best on the market but I don't drive like it's a race car and have found that they are perfectly adequate for "normal" driving including hard acceleration.
It looks beautiful, and will sell really well, well done BYD
I'm a owner of this car, watched about 5min of this review then decided to comment as seems very inaccurate. You said you get around 350km town driving and 280 open rd. Did you have an Elephant on the roof? We get 480km around town with alittle open rd driving. 350-380km open rd driving, that's with 4 people and a dog in the back. BYD isn't a new start-up car company as you stated they have been around since 2008 and are the 2nd biggest seller of EV vehicles only closely behind Tesla in the world.
I own one as well and yesterday I drove to Brisbane south side from the Sunshine Coast and back. I used around 70% of the battery over approx 280km. That calculates to 400km with most of that at 100km/h and 110km/h. I know that most would not run the battery to zero but the overall range would be very close to wltp. It averaged somewhere around 15kw/h per 100km. It performed really well.
BYD is NO1 in the world now
@@user-hc5cg3jc3i HI yes number 1 for the last 3 months if you include plug-in hybrid vehicles.
@@grevan7740 Hi yes we're really happy with our car and the quantity. 480km easily around town.
I watched 5 minutes and its time I will never get back. This guy has no idea. I have no problem with the tyres or distance travelled. I easily get over 350km plus freeway driving. The tyres will be upgraded when they wear out.
5 star rating for Euro-NCAP crash test
Well they are having issues with that at the moment. The issue can be fix with a recall, but they rathet delayed for at least extra 2 weeks, even though it is already paid in full. No compensation Once you asked about customer service about it is silent. They treat customer like shit.
Wow.. first of all it is affordable in the current ev market.. and looks not bad at all.. All i need is economical comfortable quiet affordable daily commuting car specially jam-packed traffic hours roads.. i would keep watching over this Atto after-sale problems related to this car for couple of years and then might consider to buy one.. thanks for reviewing Atto ev.. nice 👍
Good point, I did see on their site BYD offer a 7yr battery warranty and an 8yr unlimited km factory warranty on the car. Not bad. But yes waiting for a mkII / mkIII to smooth out any on-road issues that arise is wise
BYD are now offering better tyres in Australia (235/50/18) Continentals.
The vent on the front is not fake, it vents through the wheel well, you just weren't looking at it close enough.
Don’t forget the biggest selling point, ultra safe solid state blade battery tech😊
Front vents actually work to clean the air flow around the front tyres. You can actually see the holes when you look
Maybe the screen rotates to counter the black-out encountered when wearing a pair of polarised shades. I know when I wear my sunnines, some LCD panels turn black when I put them on. If I rotate the device, it counters the sunnies' polarisation
when im trying to install an apk he said i cant install from 3rd party app , there is an option to install from all sources?
with my byd han ev, a sedan, i actually get a bit more range on highway than around town. i don't drive above 120kph, often around 110kph.
Sounds like a minor thing but I am pleased to see this has a telescopic steering wheel. I test drove an MG, which didn't have it, and I couldn't get a comfortable driving position.
I have had my Atto3 for a month now and it is a very enjoyable car to drive but it has a problem. Not so much with the car but with the after sales service. My car has two annoying problems 1. I keep getting verbal warnings to switch my headlights to low beam this happens at any time day or night, sunny or cloudy , headlights lights on or off. 2 DAB+ radio keeps disappearing from the screen menu then reappearing some days later then after a couple of days disappearing again. Whilst these things are annoying they should be an easy fix. I phoned BYD Brisbane to have to have these items fixed but was told I needed to e-mail Byd automotive. This I did and waited two weeks and I e-mailed them again but as to now no reply not even an acknowledgement.
So if this how they treat simple faults I hate to think what they will do if something serious comes along. It seems once they have your money they simply ignore you.
Interesting. Are you happy with its warranty? Apparently a bit complicated and inconsistent?
Hi Barry. I am a owner too. DAB is run by the sim they have given owners for 2 years which I was told would be changed to testra this year. The sim has poor coverage and thats why DAB drops of the screan. Can'thelp on the high beam, sounds like a sensor issue. You can change the angle of the headlights that might help. Cheers.
switch you headlight setting to automatic, then the car can switch on and off higbeams when appropriate. personally, I am very much annoyed by those who drives towards me keeping their high beams on.
Sounds like an accurate observation to me.
The best review!! Thanks for being serious, frank and clear!
My pleasure!
Can some one tell me where the front fog lights are, cannot find them.
Before you test the range, have you measured the tyre pressure?
Great review, first I've seen mention the integrated dashcam. Battery definitely worth a mention as is the quietness inside. If they had cooling and memory seats I'd have one in a heartbeat.
Is there an option for a tow ball? Or can it be retro fitted? Also what side of the car is the recharge plug?
In Australia, there will be a towbar very soon.
If you're in Melbourne, email The Towbar Guys.
what charger does the car comes with?
Thanks for terrific review, except what you said about country and highway driving only getting to 280 km where everyone else is saying 330 to 350. All good that’s why I watch you👍🏼👍🏼 I went to look at the Polestar2, re-payments we’re$40 a week more Then BYD, however when you look at these details and get the same features, safety technology, battery performance ‘APPLES WITH APPLES’, the payments became $280 a week MORE!! So for me, I’m poo,r but with fuel prices , it is costing me a fortune to get to work & repayments are cheaper than petrol! This is my first event new car and it’s in the BYD Atto 3💙👍🏼💙 12 months ago I would never imagine saying that ,especially because I live in the country, I can drive 250 km in a day and 150 km a day 4 days a week, and I feel BYD can now handle that, unlike something like to leaf, 280km CITY DRIVING,you do t get that on country roads at 100km……… . And other brands, yes they’re really fantastic, creative, comfortable and ‘just’ cool but it looks like you have to spend 60 to $75,000k to get the same features in the BYD. Yes you miss out on 1 pedal, better safety features, better preference in safety and driving assist technology and yes better battery charging time , 15 min I stead of 45-50min. Well with a few driving style adjustments l coming from a plain 2005 petrol Subaru, I’m sure I’m goi g to be delighted driving this, AND YES IVE BEEN DRIVING 40 YEARS, DONT WANT YO DRIVE SNY MIRE, DONT CAR SBOUT, “ The feeling of the road through the steering wheel” NO NO NO JUST SIMPLE COMFORT TO BRT ME FROM A-B COMFI, EFFORTLESSLY AND SAFELY 😊😊😊😊 simple!!!
( gosh, I sound like my dad I’m getting old😱😱😱😱👍🏼)And I just have to learn & how to adjust my driving habits around the charging. 90% of the time should be getting home from work plugging in the car and in the morning I have full charge. I want the 7w -15w; 40km per hour portable charger, I rent and travel, to charge the car.( any suggestions, (it $200 to have the 15w power point purchased and installed) And when i go on a trip I just plan for those 40 minute lunches and breaks whilst it charges, simple. Anyway thanks again for your honesty
travel safe👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺
Is that a tether point behind the front passenger seat at 14.00mins i see? Could any owners confirm?
Just booked this car last week can’t wait for the delivery in march 2023 long waiting this car will will beat tesla market price wise love it I am a part of this technology
heaps of cars waiting for delivery at Port Melbourne they have to be washed and disinfected before going to the dealers 3 month wait!
Excellent review. Will the boot take a bag of golf clubs without dropping the back seats?
I believe the BYD Atto 3 is a connected car (to some mobile network). Is there a possibility to disconnect/disable this?
One of the better looking EVs on the road it has to be said.
can you discuss the servicing costs please
You forgot to mention BYD has the safest batteries in the entire market, they have a very high explosion threshold when compared to Tesla etc. i.e. BYD batteries can be stabbed and abused without catching on fire
that's good to hear because I like stabbing and abusing my batteries and I'm honestly sick of them catching fire
@@BD12 you made my day
No mention of the blade type battery?
Good design and price , better than other ev cars
No mention of the warranty here in Australia - has that been sorted out yet?
For some reason it's complicated....
8 years warranty Australia wide
@@vikrantdhaka2395 Yeah but isn't that just the battery?
Looks nice 👍
Wonder why we get the smaller screen in Oz
byd needs to advertise atto3's epa range,
Do BYD have any future plans for drive assist technology?
Strange this doesn’t have voice commands, navigation, and Spotify yet?
Here in NZ they’ve all updated.
The Australian cars do. This must be an old video as most car have been able to be updated OTA.
Yeah, drive must have reviewed right before major software updates
Thanks for another good entertaining video. I have been told that Toyota have just signed & contracted BYD to make the new 100% EV Toyota Corolla for them!!!! That’s gives you confidence in the brand, Toyota would not do business unless they are a proven company
Hey...Canada has been using BYD's luxury ebuses for more than 6-8yrs or more...Normal people dont know that because the government shoveled the brand logo off...guilty government...

Warranty on vehicle and battery?
8years 160000km
Looks SUV 100% to me. What confused him?
$47, 000 before on road cost is still ridiculously expensive for most families especially if you are driving in the capital cities on top of toll roads. I live in Sydney and green slips, pink slips comprehensive insurance cover, rego can cost up to 2.5k per year alone. If the Albanese wants to cut emissions by 40% by 2030, they need to do far more to help people get EVs and tax less on buying EVs and subsidize some of these running cost including allowing more Chinese imports to create more competition for EVs . Electricity prices will go through the roof from next year onwards because they want to close coal plants sooner than later.so I dont see how EVs are financially viablein the next couple of years
I'm on the Sunshine coast and the number of vehicles over the 50,000 price range is huge. So I can't see high 40,000s being an impediment.
well there is a $3000 rebate so 51k with on road costs comes down to 48k
Have you seen the cost of petrol. That's only going up too. Electric vehicle is plenty viable.
@@antaguana So is electricity prices
Mate went to look and test drive(Perth WA) Dealer wants a $1000 deposit before test drive, mate walked out...........................
That’s because they need to give preference to people who have already placed orders.
Probably easier than saying no you can't.
I've just booked a test drive at the West Perth dealership - no deposit required :)
I’d like to know about storage - how long is the boot with the back seats down and is it flat. Also width and height from deck to ceiling. What about roof racks and towbar.
There's an English car sale website that goes through all this. Carwow or something
Saw one today for the first time actually looks really good
Until you open the door 😲.
Would really like to get one except the closest service provider is 2600km away. Pretty poor form when you live in a capital city. Byd says well look at servicing options if more people buy the car... Kinda need servicing if anyone is going to buy this here.
can anyone tell me whether the Atto 3 has adjustable lumbar support?
Is it true that out of 480kms, cant even get 350 kms whether its city or highway?
Just wondering, what about the servicing maintenance warranty (battery/Car) also please do disclaimer if the Video is sponsored by the company or not.
It's a pretty cool car but in my country it cost 46,000$ on the road that's not a good deal
Good review but I have to disagree about it's performance. I just rented one for five days and initially drove it in "Eco" mode and it was pretty underpowered and the suspension was ridiculously soft, it bounced around all over the place. I switched it to "Sport" mode and also went into settings and changed the steering to "Sport" and the Regen to "High" and what a transformation. The suspension and steering firmed up really well and it felt great over rough and badly potholed country roads and it suddenly had a decent amount of power, in fact it was pretty damned fast. In short it became quite a fun sports car, just from a couple of adjustments. It is not a Tesla, but it is not bad at all!
How long to charge from 20 to 80% ? It would be rare for sensible drivers to run to zero.
Real time = about 30 minutes on a level 3 charger rated at or above 100kW.
30% - 80% 29 min.
10% - 80% 44 min.
0 - 100% 80 min.
Rare? You haven’t meet my wife yet.
@@frankiedehockie lol
whats missing in the australian byd atto 3 is the karaoke microphone in the centre console, in china the byd has an in built karaoke system in the centre console with a wireless microphone
Haha that's amazing!
I presume you have privacy laws in Australia and the Atto3 people have no problems supplying the car with a dash cam, so I'm wondering why they are telling us in Europe that due to data protection we won't be supplied with a built-in dash cam
Interesting.. any update?
BYD Atto 3 or MG4 or MG ZS or Ora Cat. Things are starting to look interesting.
Not to mention the Atto 4.
@@ecurb10 The leaders of Stellantis and Renault are on record saying that it is impossible to make a cheap EV currently. These cars somewhat disprove this. Indeed look at the other end of the market at the Rolls Royce Spectre.. Looking at an EV price difference, one might expect a £1m vehicle yet it is £300k. Quite cheap by RR standards and still one of the finest cars that they have ever made.
@@PassportToPimlico I spoke to an Atto 3 owner today in the car park - my first chance to look at one up close....quite nice! He said he loves it, and it was cheaper than the similar spec Mazda CX-30 he was looking at getting.
We've finally reached the point where the price of EVs are on par with ICE cars (roughly speaking).
Most people are going for the extended range. For a few grand more getting about 25% more range is worth it.
Exactly
At 14:03 you may see the top tether point under the front seat
good pick up
Nicely spotted Santiago!
How is the car for tall people? Around 190 cm
Interesting
280km out of 480 kms is shocking in real world usage.
At 14:45 the issue is incorrectly mentioning a missing top tether point to the front passenger seat. In fact the Australian Design Rules issue relate to an accessible tether point in the rear centre seat, and presently the Atto 3 fails this test.
Nowhere in Australia is it legal to tether a child safety seat to a front seat, but as this car is shipped to nations which do allow, it has not be removed.
On the issue of audible and steering wheel feedback "warnings", I have turned these off as I agree they are excessive. Anyone who pays attention while driving won't need to set them to work.
My ownership experience is almost at the month long point. It's so easy to just get in and set off, and then park in tighter spaces (if you have to) due to its network of cameras and sensors. One of the things I do as a matter of course now is use the rear facing camera as my de facto rear view mirror, given the small rear window does not give particularly good coverage.
In everyday driving conditions and in ECO or Normal modes traction has not been an issue. However, in Sports mode the tyres lack gip if you want to test 0-100kph. I haven't done any crazy cornering to test tyre squeal, but if that's anyone's thing, then I reckon you should choose NOT the Atto 3.
Favourite feature so far is the double press of key ring to open and close the tailgate.
thanks for sharing your experience-its really useful
It is legal to fit a childs seat to the front, as long as the back seats are fully occupied by children as well.
@@ianfranzke3191 But also have to remember to turn off the passenger airbag, or one dead baby in a crash and not from the crash but the airbag, you would have to be crazy to have kids in front seat, my daughter is banned from front seat until she is at least 15!
@@ianfranzke3191 That's only true for children over 4 years old.
I believe the only lawful exception is a vehicle with ONE row of seats.
@@remakeit2628 children between the age of 4 and 7 need to be in a childs seat, so you can fit a childs seat to the front seat.
atto3 just won the New Zealand car of the year.
charging information is not quite right... home charging (type 2) for byd atto is max at 7kw.. so it'll take 8 hours to full charge
you missed the spoken word to open and close the sun roof I think It's a great feature 🤷♂
280km range on the highway? 45 min recharge (20% to 80%) at 80kW DC fast charging. 2.5hrs driving + 45 min recharge minimum. It will take forever to travel interstate in Australia.
Yep, that's why EV's are junk
Unimpressed...they stuffed up the servicing and warranty, compare to Cjina and NZ. Now, the delivery and software download are incomplete. EVDirect/BYD does not seem to be reliable.
I love this cars most affordable ev
I like ioniq but order is a problem
The ride quality is much better than Tesla. It feels like a car at least while Tesla is suspension is way to hard on bumpers.
It is safer than Tesla as well. The batter is key point to talk about here.
It is much cheaper as well. If you are rich, get a Tesla. No doubt about it, like buying for brand not the functionality. If you are looking for a great quality and safe EV with affordable price. Buy BYD MG and KIA.
PS why do you buy EV? Because you want to save money on fuel. Why spend much more on Tesla. They serve the same purpose. If you looking for great quality EV, get a Volvo or Polestar. They are Chinese EV as well😂.
I didn't like the speaker system while test driving, sounded cheap.
Front seat very uncomfortable no matter how much I adjusted it.
Really not happy with the warranty by components!! Especially, the shock absorber have different warranty to the car itself???
Having said this, I am going for another round of test drive before I cancme order because I do want to buy a car like it or it.

How would you compare the MG ZS EV with the Atto 3? Especially not about features. But more about reliability, battery, and real driving related things.
MG has 28 dealerships accross the country last i heard, so likely would have better support than the BYD being a new maker to the country, I think that is one thing that would be on my mind buying this car.
@@mga71 thanks for the message. Actually I live in Thailand. But same is the case here. Where in Thailand I live, we will have 1 BYD and for now there are 3 MG dealers.
Though BYD will have a factory here (they are currently building that).
The BYD is a little more expensive but has 10Kwh more capacity.
One thing I wonder is that I expect that the BYD (as the MG) is permanently connected to a mobile network. I was wondering if this is possible to disconnect.
take it from the most competitive ev market in the world china, atto3 is 15% more expensive than mg zs, and outsells mg zs more than 5x. those who vote with cash are most honest.
Handsome reviewer
I'd probably wait for the MG4 which is getting great reviews and will likely be cheaper.
Given MG has already established itself in Australia with the ZS and MG3, I think it'll fare better than the Atto3. It also helps that the MG4 doesn't have a bizarro interior.
@@EnShinNoi very subjective taste on the interior design. It is quite airy with the bright colours and panaromic sunroof. But the warranty from the distributor is disappointing. That's the only reason I'm not buying this now...
MG4 might be a bit smaller, often referred to as Corolla sized, so maybe not comparable to Atto 3. The MG does look like an excellent product and if pricing can match UK then it will probably be a winner in the Aus market. MG AUS already doing well with all 3 models making it top 20 sellers in recent months.
MG are using older style batteries, so after a few years the range will be a lot less than cars with BYD blade batteries that are rated for close to 1 million km.

There are plenty of great reviews of the atto 3 out there. Watch them instead. This bloke is off the mark.
Tombstone front seats, terrible warranty conditions, silly servicing costs, only 80kw fast charging, crappy tyres. It does have good range and an attractive price though. I also find the interior a bit nuts.

Why lever forward for reverse and visa versa, that's the most *counter intuitive* ever.
Standard pattern for automatic gearboxes front to back is Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive. Reverse is in front of Drive. The Atto3 has the proper intuitive pattern.
Even in the Hyundai Ioniq 5, you twist the selector foreward for Reverse, rearward for Drive.
