The new BYD Atto 3 is already proving a polarising thing, but it's attracted no shortage of fans in its short time on the Australian market. What do you think? FULL STORY: www.whichcar.com.au/reviews/2023-byd-atto-3-review
Hi Alex. Not sure if you've seen this. You probably have. @18:11 Here is some hard evidence of the incredible safety of BYD's Blades Battery. These are 2 different battery tests involving BYD batteries : (1) ruclips.net/video/CGQwqWqzkNA/видео.html (2) ruclips.net/video/WJNvgbzfClo/видео.html (1st video is only 1 minute long. 2nd video is 2 minutes long but more comprehensive) Besides those nail tests, the battery was also heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion.
I now have about 400km on my Atto 3. I agree that the acceleration off the lights is a little less than expected but still enough to easily drag commuters off at the lights. The rolling acceleration is quite impressive though. Great for overtaking at any legal speeds. Regarding the tyres, I have had no problem in the wet. Yes, traction is lost if you plant the throttle in the dry or wet but that is as much the fault of the amount of torque available driving through the front wheels than the tyres. Remember, this is not trying to be a hot hatch and I think some reviewers loose perspective on whom this car is for. This is not a boy racer car and should not be reviewed as lacking in the boy racer department. What this car excels at is being very smooth, very quiet and comfortable with a great stereo, camera system and overtaking ability. If you are driving as spirited as this reviewers does when he shows the cars shortcomings, then your passengers will not be comfortable nor enjoying themselves and you could be regarded as driving like a prat. The average consumption in mixed city and 110km freeway has been 16.5kw/100km. Pretty good. I disagree with the reviewer that this is really only for the city with a little country driving. If you are commuting from central highlands, Wollongong or the Central coast to Sydney this would be an excellent option. I wish the car came with floor mats as there are no mats available as an accessory as yet. I would also like a little more front seat base lateral support. Otherwise, the first 400km have left me impressed. It is a great car that would meet or exceed the needs of people looking to go electric for their daily driver.
Continental UltraContact UC6 235/50/18 are the EV tyre used in the Chinese review cars in videos. I'm sure the better compound and the 20mm extra width will make a huge difference.
@@ckafam Thanks for the ownership update. How is the Regen feel? Can you one pedal drive the car without touching the brakes? One pedal driving is the best part of driving an electric car, so wanted to understand.
we've put 1500kms on ours in 3 weeks of Kiwi ownership. Very happy with purchase. I was expecting to like it - having put down money sight unseen. I love it. Build quality is superb. BYD's are going to get a lot of market share i think.
In Israel we actually got Continental tires… About warranty: 4 years or 120k km on car, 8 years or 200k km on battery and 8 years or 150k km on electric motor.
I need reading glasses to read most screens, but when I set the digital displays (both 12 inch, and 5 inch for driver) to "dark mode" I could see everything clearly. Just about every setting can be adjusted on this car, and what was smartest for me was adjusting how far the boot lid opened (in case you are ever in a low parking bay - my Mistsubishi still shows it wounds!). I thought I would mostly drive the car in "eco" mode, but found sports mode a really good option in car parks where idiots just pull out and you need to move away smartly or get hit. I also found sports mode on roundabouts to be best as this car is surprisingly nippy when it has to be, even in traffic when you have to change lanes quickly. Only downside for me was the driver-side mirror which I always adjust wide to reduce the blind spot. However, even though I could not always see what I usually do, Atto 3's "blind spot" monitoring plus 3-D car views on screen proved to be more than adequate. The strangest early sensation was feeling quite comfortably cocooned as a driver, which gives the somewhat "small car" feeling. But when you get out of the car it's actually a BIG mid-sized SUV. I think the Atto 3 will do what Tesla's did in turning their owners into their strongest advocates, while those that don't have actual driving experience can complain as much as they like and we won't care.
I drive mine in Normal mode and find it quite responsive when stopped at traffic lights to easily keep up with the traffic once the traffic starts moving.
I test drove mine today & the glasses thing concerned me. I couldn’t really read the screen but it advice was excellent so thank you. I get mine in Jan 23, super excited 😆
More on driving modes... 'Eco' is sluggish to take off when the car is fully stopped. I drive mine in 'Normal' mode and occasionally switch to 'Sports'. Not sure what impact the different modes have on overall range. It would be ideal to start in 'Sports' mode and automatically switch to 'Eco' when it reaches certain speed. Tyres are a bit of cop out in otherwise a decent overall package. Would consider switching to a more sportier model/version when it arrives in future but still it is a pretty good starting point to own a midsize SUV electric vehicle without breaking the bank.
BYD sold more than 200000 EVs in September worldwide, they only reached 100000 monthly figure 6 months ago. BYD is supplying Sixt over 100000 EVs over the next 6 years, a deal just announced.
Yes I have one on order. BYD have been around for years selling millions of cars within their own country, and some their buses have been sold here for a few years also. I would also add that Warren Buffett seems to think that they are a worthwhile investment and he doesn't usually jump into investments blindly, so I personally think it's safe to say that they should be trustworthy.
@@Peter-vn8ue thanks, congratulations to you too! I'm checking my inbox every few hours hoping to get the final payment message! My account still says estimated delivery being aug/sept but I don't think that's going to happen unfortunately.
@@songforguy1 I got a call from one of the staff at my experience centre in SA once I had paid and a day and time to pickup my Atto 3. There was 3 days from when I gave them a copy of my driver's licence until the day I picked up my Atto 3. I had given them my personalised number plates 10 days beforehand when the experience centre first opened, so my car was registered to those plates and were fitted to my Atto 3. Its an awesome Ev, today I went for a long drive in suburbia land trying out the Adaptive Cruise control at various road speeds where the speed limits changed and set the distance between the vehicle in front and my vehicle to 2 bars which performed flawlessly at all speeds, leaving a safe travelling distance slowing and braking and bring my Atto 3 to a stop behind the vehicle in front so I could see the bottom of their back tyres. They printed out a copy of my paid invoice that showed that it was paid in full and emailed me the paid invoice too.
Good idea is to take the test drive first (you should have had an email from BYD by now) and go over everything important to your driving needs. That way you can discuss anything you missed when you finally pick up the car.
The BYD Atto 3 can only charge at 7kw on a home charger whether you have single phase or 3 phase power at your house, the Atto 3 sets the Max charge rate at 7kw from you home wall box charger thats 7kw Max the car will accept. I picked mine up yesterday, Friday the 16th in SA. I'm the 2nd customer to take delivery here.
That’s interesting Peter, thanks for the intel. BYD does say it can take 11kW AC charging from a 3 phase socket which halves the charge time (so around 6 hours for 0-100%) so it’s intriguing you can’t get that charge rate - Alex
@@sammaimas155 do your homework Sam and Jonathan and go straight to the source and ask Luke Todd or anyone from BYD in Australia. Since they changed their name and are no longer evdirect, the information has been omitted from the new Web site.
you will also need a different wall charger to get 11kw. the wall charger included in the purchase is capped at 7kw. A 11kw wall charger will cost you a few hundredreds dollars.
Test driver seemed unaware that steering has 'comfort' and 'normal' settings? Perhaps his comment about 'lazy' response to steering input was in 'comfort' setting. I tried both setttings and found the steering felt much more direct in 'normal' setting.
I really was expecting an appliance when I went for a test drive, was impressed enough to lay in a deposit. The Atto 3 outperforms the daily 2015 Civic handily, that's getting traded in and we're keeping the STi for 'performance requirements'
Atlas tires are manufactured by Linglong Tire and have state of the art factories in China. Here in the states we are able to buy Atlas tires. They usually have very high satisfaction rate by customers and the price is mid range. Atlas tires are a very good choice for regular driving. If you want to drag race or drift your car probably it is best to get Pirelli or Michelin. In any case do not listen to this guy and give a chance to the original tires, you may be pleasantly surprised.
i considered new tyres - but these are up to task. Have driven long distances in the rain without issues. Regular driving, not fast. Will keep them til they start sliding or squirming. They have a pretty deep tread pattern, so should last a while.
Ling long tyres ya gotta be having a laugh. I took one of these for a test drive and the traction was trash compared to Hankooks/Michelins in other cars
I am from hongkong. And many hongkong car media reviews about atto3 complaint the batman tyre as bad traction, even they are positive to the car. (besides the design) PS they commented with test drive experience but not fame…because they all claimed not knowing such tyre model. And it is hard to defend the tyre by saying "this is not a performance car", as media also tries out daily car/ev, but the batman is the only one being blamed among all.
Mate, 1st time watching your review and loved it ! You're fun to watch, no BS, clear & concise info that is easy to digest for most of us. Keep up the good work, and we'll be watching more of your videos.
Were you in sports mode when you tried the off the line performance test. Yes the tyres fitted are not the best in the wet. My Atto 3 is booked in on Monday to have Continental Eco contact 5 tyres fitted. These are specifically designed for Evs and gives great grip and traction on dry or wet roads.
Hi Peter, yep I was in sport mode. It's an odd one because once you're up and running the roll-on acceleration is fairly strong. It's just the initial step off from a standstill that feels leisurely. And excellent decision re the Conti tyres. Let me know how much of an improvement they deliver! Alex
Hi Peter, are you on any of the Atto 3 facebook pages?? if so, will you put up the details and your feedback once you have them.. that would be really interesting. thx
@@johnbentley6925 Yes John they are 215/55/R18 exactly as currently fitted. The Continental Ecocontact XL 5 tyres have a rating of 99V. I was going to fit Continental Ecocontact 6 tyres 215/50/R18 but they have a rating of 92V which is too low for the Atto 3 and the 5s perform better in the wet than the Continental Ecocontact 6 tyres. Continental Ecocontact tyres are specifically designed for Evs. They have great rolling resistance.
@@fionakennedy818 Hi Fiona, I'm not on Facebook but I think my brother is he is picking up his Atto 3 on Monday and is customer no 3 here in SA to take delivery. I'm on the Yuan Plus/Atto 3 Whirlpool forum here in Australia. I think there are 5 of us now around Australia who have taken delivery of their Atto 3s that are on the whirlpool forum.
Good review Alex, you could have mentioned the the blade battery can be charged to 100 percent. I quite like like it, and when BYD sort the obvious teething problems, it will give Tesla a run for the money...well done.
Thanks for your pretty comprehensive review. I have ordered an Atto 3 but am reconsidering. The car itself seems like very reasonable value as it stands, though I'm not sure how the interior design will stand up after a few years. But I'm feeling quite tentative about going ahead with the purchase mainly because of the shifting goal posts on a number of issues with the Australian importer, EV Direct - tyres and tuning, warranty, servicing costs, lack of ANCAP, etc. The warranty variations in what is and is not covered does not give much faith in build quality. As far as I'm aware the Atto 3 warranty in other jurisdictions(NZ, etc) covers the whole vehicle for 6 years and the battery for 8. When asked directly about this, EV Direct's comment was that it 'does not comment on the warranty in other countries' - a bit cute!
@@SahilChauhan nor does it have the Tesla price tag, so some allowances have to be made. The ANCAP 5 star rating will be announced no later than the 20th of October. By the end of October Apple carplay and Android auto will on the Atto 3 via an OTA. How do I know this, I asked when I picked up my Atto 3 yesterday.
@@Peter-vn8ue well said u nailed him practicality wise n pricing wise its a good featured ev vehicle software wise it will become better on further regular ota updates N also dont forget BYD safest battery n its proved by nail penetration test
If the amount of warranty offered is used as a measure of build quality then the fact that it has excellent warranty offerings everywhere else should also give confidence the manufacturer believes in the quality. What we are seeing in Australia is EV Direct and Eagers not fully backing the product. It is interesting that in the early days of their promotion, before Eagers came onboard, there was, at least perceived to be, the same warranty offering as NZ gets. Is it just a coincidence that when a large dealer network becomes involved the warranty offering reduces and the servicing cost increase, both changes that would benefit the dealer network. The original direct sales model with EV Direct and pick up and servicing through MyCar looked a lot more attractive offering to the customer. This shift in models may also be behind the change in tyre offering. It was originally stated that the vehicles would have Continental tyre fitted for Australia, I don't think this is a coincidence with the MyCar deal as they are entirely owned by Continental Tyres.
Good review… don’t think you highlighted the wireless charging… Yes I have one on order but communications from importer quite sparse. European ncap results expected 12 October. All European reviews have continental uc 6 ultra contact 235/50 versus the atlas 215/ 55. Locally fitted tyres….. would love someone to replace the tyres to highlight what improvement that would make. I am currently still weighing up whether I will proceed because there seems a lots of loose ends with the overall purchasing / ownership experience going on here. Again good review
Hi John, thanks for the comment. Swapping tyres is a great idea; it'd deliver a fairly transformation change I reckon. Also, I bet you're not alone in feeling a touch uncertain about the purchasing/ownership experience. Let me know which way you go and how you find the experience from here. And good pick up on the wireless charging! It was in my notes to include but slipped my mind when actually talking to camera. There are 2 x USB ports in the front too (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C), plus another two on the end of the centre console for rear passengers - Alex
@@JakeyJay26 I too am not impressed with the MyCar serviceing schedule ! But I think under Aust. consumer law you can get it serviced anywhere and still keep the BYD warranty.
It’s a little strange to me no one has commented nor noticed an important aspect of the front seats. Look very carefully,if you will. There’s no ability to adjust the front seats HEAD RESTS! Not everyone is of the same height or build, so for a smaller sized person, you will be surprised how uncomfortable it is. I tried it today and felt disappointed that I just cannot adjust the head rest for comfort. It felt more like an office chair! Very unusual design. A real issue for long drives.
byd is the largest ev maker in the world, not an unknown brand. it sold more evs than telsa this year and the lead will be larger next year. Tesla german started using the blade battery since August. byd is the 2nd largest ev battery producer in the world, and it is widely regarded as the king of lfp. regarding regen, it has regen, just not as powerful as tesla. whatever lever regen an ev has, it just takes getting used to. at the end of the day, they will regenerate similar amount of electricity. we drive a byd han ev and a bmw x5. switching between these two cars doesn't feel uncomfortable. I think it would be more challenging if they were a tesla and the x5.
BYD sell more EVs than Tesla? Not really. The only way to get that result is to include BYDs plugin hybrids, which isn't really comparing apples with apples since Tesla don't build them and anyway they still burn fossil fuels, and have the added complications of two drive systems and a zillion moving parts Vs the relative simplicity of a pure electric drive. Having said that, even looking at pure BEVs only, Tesla and BYD are way ahead of all competition volume-wise, and I totally agree with all of your other comments.
@@murraynickel6377 let's put it this way. byd has more ev production capacity than tesla. making a phev is harder than a bev, a lot harder actually. switching from phev production to bev production has one obstacle: battery supply. byd is probably the only ev maker that is and will not be constrained by battery supply. the only reason byd is making a lot of phev is because there is and will be a strong demand for phev for the next decade, and byd can dominate that market. besides, byd phev are run as bev only 90% of the time. as long as it helps make the world greener, I say go for it. the auto world shouldn't be polarized as ice vs bev. phev will do great pulling people away from ice.
@@czdeepblueczdeepblue660 han's sale is more than mercedes e series and bmw 5 series combined. it is a sedan, not comparable to x5. I happen to have the x5 and the han ev at the same time. I drives the han ev most of the time. the driving experience is much better with han ev.
@@murraynickel6377just wanted to add one thing. Han ev has 200km pure battery powered range which is more than enough for daily commute and with the ICE built-in it’s capable of long range trip like regular ICE cars when needed. This saves the battery cost and offer assurance over possible range anxiety. You get the best of both world.
question please , if the car have 15% battery it will effect the momentum or lowering the acceleration speed and make lower results to 0-100km test ? when the air conditioner is working it can cause lower momentum and make also acceleration speed and make lower results to 0-100km test
Car beeps after you turn the steering wheel 90 degrees right and then left..and you said it gives false alarm like that. 😂 Btw... The car does do 0 to 100km in about 7.2s many have tested in NZ.
The off the line performance is better in sport mode, and belive it or not, there is a hidden launch control function (same activation sequence as the BYD Tang).
Nice review! The lack of regen is a real bummer with this car, is it possible this could be updated OTA at some point? Also the head on collision warning seems to be a bit of a joke…wonder if there is a setting to turn off the audio or something?? You’d hope that can be tuned down in a software update too…
As long as it uses regen when the brake pedal is first pressed and the actual pads after that if needed it should be fine. Proper one pedal driving would be nice though.
Good thought re OTA update. Don't see why not as long as there's no need for changes to the hardware... And I didn't have time to check if you can switch the chimes and warnings off. Will have a look next time we spend more time with the car.
I'm buying one (Still waiting) but on the test drive the regen seemed fine to me. Way better than my Camry hybrid. Not one peddle though. I think I will turn off collision warning (yes, you can) but keep lane centering on.
@@lazyfrogonalog that's great news re the collision warning. i can definitely deal with no one pedal driving, as long as the regen kicks in when you depress the brake pedal so that we can keep our brake pads unused!
Also have one on order. I too am concerned about spare, was told by BYD email enquiry that a full size spare WOULD fit in boot by moving floor to top posy. Even a space saver is better than nothing. Would also like to know what maximum charge rate is. I need to get fast charger. Just been told car is in production phase !
I’ve heard a lot of negative feedback regarding the Aussie warranty and what it covers in comparison to what BYD customers receive overseas. I’ve also heard a lot of negative feedback regarding the Aussie distributors & vehicle servicing as well. It may be enough to negatively affect the potential Aussie customer base in a drastic way.
I'm old enough to remember when a one year warranty was all you could expect and constant fights with dealers after that. My Kia has a 5yr warranty and hasn't been near a dealership in 10 yrs even the battery lasted almost 10yrs. For me even the "picky" BYD warranty is acceptable.
lfp batteries cannot deliver high currents like the standard lithium batteries and are heavier. The reason for the lacklustre accel is the battery cannot push large peak currents like standard Lion batteries. Tesla and others use standard lion batteries in performance models.
@@raymondmumford6255 he’s only dislikes withers tyres .. and 0-100 is slower . Back seats look like they are for children only .. or Aussies too fat for the back seats
@@MrBigbangbuzz I think it's a good car, and has so much to offer. I don't think BYD Australia have done a good job, I actually think they are doing a shit job, and it seems they still are from customer hand over feedback. Importer could have done something about the tyres, they do have a say in what we get here in OZ, I just don't think they care about anything except themselves.
Love your review style and detail, but you missed out the integrated dashcam facility with SD card slot. If you think that's expensive you should consider we in Thailand are paying A$ 5k more, but we do have a full 8 years of free servicing, roadside assistance and warranty, although I'm not sure how the warranty reads for exclusions and variations. There's also a reasonable network of new dealerships and they're popping up faster than weeds in a garden, and you can walk into one today and drive out with your new (Atto 3) car immediately. We get a home charger fitted for free and I'm told we can use any dealership to charge up for free on your travels, and it's rumored they are going to install 1,200 more public charging stations. The very impressive Seal has also arrived, but I believe you need to order it and wait for delivery, how long I couldn't say. Personally, I'm hoping the Seal U arrives soon for more space and ease of access, being an old codger...! 😉
Seems like the reviewer didn’t check the setting about collision warning and steering modes. And all the beeps were right after he did some dangerous driving.
I'm fitting Continental Ecocontact XL 5 tyres 215/55/R18 with a load rating of 99 on Monday which are the exact same size as the Atlas Batman tyres fitted to the Atto 3. I'm having them fitted by my local mycar store. Their price is $315 per tyre , tyresales have them on sale for $250 fitted when you buy 4. Mycar have a price match policy so long as they can go online to see the company selling the tyres and their price. They have matched the price of a $1,000 for 4 tyres including fitting and balancing. Continental Ecocontact XL 5 tyres are specifically designed for Ev's and perform really well on both dry and wet roads. They have very good rolling resistance.
Love the different interior with some visual aspects that lift class standards - I’d have one in a flash as it’s the future - but I’m waiting for MG4 to get here as it looks like a better option than the ZS EV - great review Alex 👏
@@hartoz In the UK, the MG4 starts about 10% less than the ZS EV though, so it should cost a bit less than the Atto 3. Which makes sense because the MG4 is a hatchback and slightly smaller than the Atto 3.
And in Victoria you have to pay the government 2.7 cents per kilometre! So $2.70 for every 100klm you drive. What a great incentive not to buy an electric car.
@David Handley You could've mentioned that this EV charge in Vic is being contested in the courts as unconstitutional , so it may disappear. We shall see.
Hey Alex I have an Atto 3 on order and was curious about your comment in the driving impressions section of your review basically saying that it was a good city car but only suitable for the occasional country drive. What makes it unsuitable for country driving?.
Nothing Peter you just need to download apps like plugs share and chargefox etc to your phone that shows you public charging stations so you can plan your route if travelling vast distances to find a public fast charger to recharge the battery so you don't run out of battery charge.
@@peterbaker6587 I saw a video of someone in NZ taking it for an extended drive, and while the DCFC is not blazing fast, it was better than I thought. BYD claims 80 kW max DC fast charging speeds, but the car he drove hit almost 90 kW and held it for a while before slowly ramping down. Even at 80% charge, it was still going at 50 kW, which is pretty nice for a car in this price range. On a trip, you can take it down to around 15% and charge it all the way to 80 to 85% with decent charging speeds.
I tested drive the Atto 3 2 weeks ago in Robina QLD. I’ve never heard any annoying alarm beeps in 30 mins drive on motorway or city road. I consider myself an aggressive driver, so maybe you are the one even worse and that’s Y it triggered the alarm constantly when you were driving this car. BYD is very conservative when expanding their business overseas especially in Australia. Working with EV Direct instead of doing it by themselves is a good example. You never know BYD could be banned in Australia like Huawei if one day Uncle Sam isn’t happy. I don’t think they replaced continental tyres with a non name brand is coz of cost. Check with a tyre shop expert, they will tell you the wear and tear on the name brands are pretty bad! Not mentioning, the tyres on EV car got shorter life span comparing to those fuel cars coz the weight of EV is much heavier than fuel cars of similar size. That is Y they put longer life span tyres instead to ensure you pay less in long run. But unfortunately people here encouraged consumers to spend money on something really not necessary while it’s nothing wrong with the tyres. The only thing wrong is you put, it’s bad tyres into audience’s mind, psychologically, so sad!
I have one and would generally agree with your findings, though you have probably covered more distance than I have so far. I'm not sure I would be so confident in saying that it does not have the advertised power output, however it is true that it is not particularly great off the line. The main instrument cluster (screen) is pretty small but on the whole this doesn't matter as essential information is well presented, other than the traffic sign recognition, which could be a little larger. The turning circle seems fine to me. In theory it is a little better than the MG. In theory. The off pedal regen effect is a bit lame. Even though I have not experienced other EV's it is possible I wouldn't even notice the effect if I didn't know it was there. Some people mistakenly believe that this means the Atto 3 is not reclaiming much energy. This is incorrect. If the car is not retarding motion adequately you will need to brake, and under braking the car will use regen. It's just not 'initiating' this effect itself as much as other EV's do. All in all though, a sports car it is not, but it is a quiet and comfortable family transport or commuter with, in my opinion, more usable power than one realistically needs even if some would prefer more.
Great feedback and insight, thanks. Couple of questions: how long have you had your car and what spec did you go for (battery size/colour). And most importantly, how did you find the ordering/delivery customer experience? The power output/acceleration is an interesting one. It does feel like it has the full 150kW/310Nm once you're up and moving. The roll on acceleration is actually quite strong. It's just that initial step off from a standstill that feels a touch sluggish - Alex
@@WheelsAustralia Appreciate your response. To answer your questions. Only had the car a few days, hence the lack of mileage. I have a white extended. No standard range vehicles have been delivered to my knowledge. Ordering was easy enough. Customer experience is a hard one to rate though as we have only purchased a few new cars over the years. I probably could write pages, but in general it has been poor. This 'may' be predominantly teething issues with the fact that it is a new brand and a seemingly inexperienced importer. but some of the miscommunication/misinformation issues are not readily forgivable in my view, So far - though early days - it seems the car is a worthwhile purchase in spite of the customer experience, rather than as a result of or in combination with. It is worth noting, however, that quite a bit of the ensuing frustrations involved getting clear and consistent information (both personally, and with the interested community as a whole), but now much - though not all - of this has been clarified one would hope that the issues - going forward - will be fewer.
@@Dwil9057 It's too early for me to say given my mileage, however I am led to understand that 'normal' and 'sport' are quite similar, and both a noticeable step up from ECO. I'm not sure that the reviewer agrees though.
Looks awesome value for money, one thing that would concern me with new brands you dont know what parts support will be like, eg something fails how long might you be waiting for spares?, competition is good hopefully this will force others to produce affordable EV's.
I am a bit worried about the quality and reliability. After 5-6 years will it still work ok without any drama? Japanese cars are known to be reliable. Not sure about Chinese cars.

thank you for the review , you know if the Regeneration can be updating on the car update OTA ? i mean the Regeneration of the brake's is very low even on the high mode . and he don't even stop the car , also because low Regeneration , the battery not charging good amount of energy and its make the car drive much lower Km from what he can actually can make thank
Why are these car reviewers put so much emphasis on acceleration off the standing start? This car is not designed for racing or beating someone at the traffic light. The car should be judged on 'fit for purpose', normal city daily use and at the price point.
Don't mind the exterior of the car (apart from the Build Your Dreams letting on the rear 🤦♂) .. but that interior, for me, is an absolute deal breaker. Seperate to the car, this review was excellent.
The reviewer said the interior "polarises" opinions. If you can't appreciate something different, then stick to Teslas etc.. The interior was a deal maker for me, and quite a few others who put their money down. It's uncluttered and textured, and actually has a decent feel to it; ie. not "cheap". In fact, as a person who is "tactile", the Atto 3 ticks all the right boxes. I also store my water bottle in the doorwell because the guitar strings hold it firmly in place.
Actually I think it is unique and apart from all other mainstream design trends. They came with some original ideas instead of copying others and thats valuable.
@@remakeit2628 Just sharing my personal opinion, if you love the interior, that's all that matters. Responding to your "stick to Tesla comment" ... I would argue the interior of a Tesla is radically minimal and different to anything else.
@@RyanCowan I like Tesla's minimalism, but I also like the main tasks being "tactile" - à la Atto 3 - rather than necessarily screen based as in the Teslas. As many European reviewers have noted, the Atto 3 is a Chinese version of Citroen design quirkiness. Not all the French liked Citroens due to its radical difference. I think a wide variety of design options in EVs is beneficial to uptake.
Service costs are silly and the warranty is a joke. A shame really as this car deserves better. BYD needs to ditch the middleman and go direct. The vehicle could do with a bit more range and much better fast charging. I’m happy to let the early adopters jump in for now.
around the 3 minute mark you comment on AC charge time. this is an awful metric as the time buys you more range in a car with a battery big enough to hold it. It tends to make the better car look worse. a better metric would be km/kwh, how efficient the car is.

Service can be done by anyone who uses original parts so that the ridiculous service price can be fixed, but the doggy warranty is a deal breaker, indicate the product quality is very low.
🤔🤔🤔 Biggest issue in Australia and in the world besides the price is the technology, AC charge 6 hours minimum? Ridiculous, DC CHARGE 50 minutes? Ludicrous and with that amount of power …. Boring ‼️ we need an EV with minimum: 200kw to drag those batteries around, AC one hour, DC 10 minutes that’s what we need under $55k driveway and charging station on every single petrol station NOW THAT’S what we need 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Atto the only EV is a FWD SUV not 4WD can not have the ability to tow a caravan, drive distance could run out of batteries and splash through muddy water might soak electric motors rendered malfunction, though can't afford this electric price due to inflation there's one way ticket to cheap public transport.
These are 2 different battery tests involving BYD batteries :
(1) ruclips.net/video/CGQwqWqzkNA/видео.html
(2) ruclips.net/video/WJNvgbzfClo/видео.html
(1st video is only 1 minute long.
2nd video is 2 minutes long but more comprehensive)
Besides those nail tests, the battery was also heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion.
Attos 3 is meant for older person like me. Get a tesla if you want performance.
Great comments… there are some floor mats starting to show up on eBay … some New Zealand supplier
Continental UltraContact UC6 235/50/18 are the EV tyre used in the Chinese review cars in videos. I'm sure the better compound and the 20mm extra width will make a huge difference.
Aliexpress have floor mats available direct from China. I had mine within 2 weeks, a lot quicker than the wait for the car.

we've put 1500kms on ours in 3 weeks of Kiwi ownership. Very happy with purchase. I was expecting to like it - having put down money sight unseen. I love it. Build quality is superb. BYD's are going to get a lot of market share i think.

About warranty: 4 years or 120k km on car, 8 years or 200k km on battery and 8 years or 150k km on electric motor.

That’s interesting Peter, thanks for the intel. BYD does say it can take 11kW AC charging from a 3 phase socket which halves the charge time (so around 6 hours for 0-100%) so it’s intriguing you can’t get that charge rate - Alex

And many hongkong car media reviews about atto3 complaint the batman tyre as bad traction, even they are positive to the car. (besides the design)

And it is hard to defend the tyre by saying "this is not a performance car", as media also tries out daily car/ev, but the batman is the only one being blamed among all.

Hi Peter, yep I was in sport mode. It's an odd one because once you're up and running the roll-on acceleration is fairly strong. It's just the initial step off from a standstill that feels leisurely. And excellent decision re the Conti tyres. Let me know how much of an improvement they deliver! Alex

For the price it's not bad. The software just didn't feel refined compared to something like a Tesla. Felt very generic tacky Xiaomi level software.
@@SahilChauhan nor does it have the Tesla price tag, so some allowances have to be made. The ANCAP 5 star rating will be announced no later than the 20th of October. By the end of October Apple carplay and Android auto will on the Atto 3 via an OTA.

Interior design is super. I would say it has the best Interior design.
Good review… don’t think you highlighted the wireless charging…
Yes I have one on order but communications from importer quite sparse.

Fantastic, extensive review!
byd is the largest ev maker in the world, not an unknown brand. it sold more evs than telsa this year and the lead will be larger next year.
In China, the starting price of Han ev is 1/3 of that of bmw x5, about 30,000 USD, but the sales of both are similar.😅

The warranty issue was caused by the car dealership in Australia ( BYD Australia ) wanting car owners to pay huge service charges .
Come on BYD, we need some in the UK as well :)
The Prime Minister of the UK has declared China as a threat and what expects BYD to go to the UK ?

Alex, the manual states that you will only get full power from launch if your battery is above 95% SoC.
Is it slow off the line in all modes?even sport?
Not sure about Chinese cars.
please i need to know ,how much max km the 60kw battery can do ? ill gladly to know how much km inside the city and outside the city , and average of them both
please someone answer me 🥺
All online real world reviews show that 360 kilometres can be expected - watch some New Zealand RUclipsrs who have put it to the test.
I wish BYD come to Canada!
Haha Justin just messed up the relationship with China. BYD will hesitate to go there.
I like the car but don't like the seller in Australia.
They don't reply to your emails quickly or didn't bother to reply. What is so hard to write afew words and click send.
Good insight into the customer experience journey, thanks for sharing. We've heard similar things from others who have placed an order. Let us know how your fare from here - Alex

thank you for the review , you know if the Regeneration can be updating on the car update OTA ? i mean the Regeneration of the brake's is very low even on the high mode . and he don't even stop the car , also because low Regeneration , the battery not charging good amount of energy and its make the car drive much lower Km from what he can actually can make
thank
@@Espakho That is true ! And if you love it, thats all that matters.
I would personally go with an MG ZS. Bigger car, bigger dealer network, and more mainstream styling.
The Atto 3 is bigger than the ZS, but yes the MG does have some established market presence in its favour, no doubt about that. - Mike
I switched off when you mentioned about the seats, not knowing if they were real leather or not.Of course they are vinyl.

I've seen these everywhere
Well as a chinese i just bought the Tesla model3 and i have to say that it's a good car and it calls "Yuan Plus" in China.
The review on the website by WHEElS, is 7.5 of 10, I think it's way too low. I would give a 9 compare to the performance + value+finish quality.

Service can be done by anyone who uses original parts so that the ridiculous service price can be fixed, but the doggy warranty is a deal breaker, indicate the product quality is very low.
I refused to be blackmailed by the BS service costs so ive CANCELLED my order BYD need to look into this KMART scam
No android no apple car no ancap safty rate
But I bought it.
Not sure about the big screen when it does not support apple and Google
Much more expensive than in China😂
🤔🤔🤔 Biggest issue in Australia and in the world besides the price is the technology, AC charge 6 hours minimum? Ridiculous, DC CHARGE 50 minutes? Ludicrous and with that amount of power …. Boring ‼️ we need an EV with minimum: 200kw to drag those batteries around, AC one hour, DC 10 minutes that’s what we need under $55k driveway and charging station on every single petrol station NOW THAT’S what we need 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Most of the EV buses in Oz Is BYD
Pros - Blade battery + low price. Cons - slow AC&DC charging, funky steam punk interior. Not for me
good car except tyres
its actually called be yar dee
I'll stick to the MG ZS EV
In China the price is 23 000USD🤣

$51k all up.
@TheHayabuse09 Does that price include the state governments rebates? This car is well under the approx 60k limit.
I'd like to buy an electric car but you can't do road trips 🤪
safety system beep is just pathetic. can you get rid of this?
WOW that looks terrible , rear seats look way to tight , Looks like an MG
မင်းတို့ဘယ်လောက်ရလဲ
Atto the only EV is a FWD SUV not 4WD can not have the ability to tow a caravan, drive distance could run out of batteries and splash through muddy water might soak electric motors rendered malfunction, though can't afford this electric price due to inflation there's one way ticket to cheap public transport.
Yer Nah buy an MG.
With the amount of wheel spin from this vehicle it should have been banned without a revision.
Thanks for the video. Given the video, I decided not consider this cheap nasty EV.
Looks like a built for 60s made in 2020. Then the alarms go off. As we say in Dingo piss Creek lots of yuck with that.
🤢🤮
Made in mainland China. Buying one, supports their economy. Your choice.
