    Just on 3 phase charging. A few people have mentioned that it doesn’t have it, but the importer has assured us it has. Not sure who to believe! So tread with caution.
    UPDATE 25 July 2023: BYD contacted us with the following statement regarding charging.
    "BYD ATTO 3, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal in Australia and New Zealand can achieve single-phase charging power of 7 kW (AC)"
    "BYD Electric Vehicle models available in Europe are equipped with three-phase charging power of 11kW (AC)"

    • @HyenaRspec
      @HyenaRspec 2 года назад +7

      Even if it does have 3 phase there's not much point if the onboard charger maxes out at 7kw - that can be delivered on single phase 32A. Or if it's like the Tesla UMC it may plug into a 3 phase socket but still only draw from a single phase.

    • @benjohnson5897
      @benjohnson5897 2 года назад +3

      I've seen people mention that only one of the three Mennekes AC charging pins are actually connected, therefore definitely single phase - and that's not necessarily a bad thing for the bulk of people.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 2 года назад +2

      I'm almost certain that originally they said the Atto 3 was coming with 11kW onboard charger but that appears to be another thing the importer has quietly changed.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 2 года назад +4

      So they've been advertising 3 phase charging all along (checked the wayback machine). By definition a 3 phase AC EV charger is either 11kW or 22kW. Instead they've equipped the Atto 3 with an onboard 7kW single phase charger. Another example of deceptive business practices from EVDirect. Of course a 7kW charger will work with a 3 phase EVSE but that is NOT 3 phase charging. If it was 3 phase 7kW it would be limited to 10amps a phase and would only deliver 2.4kW on a single phase charger.

    There’s actually a 3rd top tether point hidden underneath the fabric in the boot if you feel for it. No idea why it effectively needs to be cut out of the fabric but it’s actually there. Only thing missing from the review was mention of the mess of the rollout as far as warranty, servicing and now delivering of cars. But the car itself seems great. Nothing else comes close at this price point for an EV. Parents are picking one up and I was genuinely surprised when I checked it out in person. Prefer my Tesla but it’s good that cheaper EV options are coming. Great review Paul.

Yet we know we can do 7kw on 1 phase or 32 amps. So, because we don't know for sure, we would have to all buy a heavy 32 x 3 amp cable so we could charge at home on 1 phase ( at 32 amps) yet allow us to draw 3 x 10 amps from a public charger. That's a lot of expense, weight and handling that wont be necessary if it turns out it's only single phase charging. So yes, it matters.

Even if you use a use a public 22kw charger (charger is the wrong term with AC supply it's actually a controller or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment EVSE) the output is single phase and you'll require a CCS/type2 to CCS/type2 cable.

Nice to have built-in high quality dashcam for example and not have to take the dashboard apart on your new car just to run a wire for a 3rd. party one that would have worse video most likely.
    You also competently reviewed the driving dynamics on a proper track.

    After thinking about this review, the BYD sounds almost perfect as our second car. Most journeys less than 250k can charge off our 12kw solar system with a timer, not used every day. Then I remembered we keep our cars for around 10 years and nearly every lithium battery we have, has failed around 3 years. The 10kwh battery linked to our solar, the Dyson vacuum, my Makita power tools, our phones and pads. My laptop did however last 8 years. So assuming the warranty is 6 years, and I cannot find the exact details, the second battery will be ready to drop dead around the warranty expires and we will be up for big dollars assuming BYD is still around.

    NFC is near field communication. You get two standard key fobs, and an NFC card (tap card). If you open by tapping the NFC on the mirror you have 10 mins to push the start button inside, otherwise if you open with key fob, the key fob must be 'in range' inside the cabin for you to push the start button. When the smartphone app is released I believe you'll also be able to tap your phone on the NFC reader instead of the card (to be confirmed).
    3 Phase AC? - No I don't think so. The Mennekes Type 2 (AC) plug standard is capable of 3-phase, but I believe in the Atto 3 uses only one of the 3 pins across the middle (there is one for each phase) - the others are blanks. Single phase home charging is perfectly fine for almost everyone - either with a standard 10amp 240v outlet or a 7kW wall adaptor. For long trips go the full DC rapid charging (45 mins to fully charge while you have a lunch break).

    I’ve ordered the extended range model last week. Really liked it. I should be getting it end of march next year. First I was worried about the distributor, servicing and the brand itself. The more research I did the more liked the brand. However not so much about evdirect. Somethings have been improved like the servicing but my main concern is about warranty, it is kinda not making any sense at the moment. I find it very confusing. Once that gets sorted out I’ll go ahead with the order and purchase the car if not I’ll get my deposit back and move on. I have couple of months to see if evdirect improves anything. I’ve test driven it and it feels like a normal car except the humming noise you get at low speeds to warn pedestrians which I found was very loud and intrusive but apparently it’s very easy to turn it off. The test car had 4000+ kms on it and there were no rattles or any other weird noise. The car had a lot of space for its size too! I hope evdirect make their facts clearer so I can go ahead with the order. Also great review!

      I think you’re right! Then it looks like the speakers are unbranded. I couldn’t see any other brands on them.

    It's no wonder that BYD is have German car vibe..
    Wolfgang Josef Egger (born 13 February 1963) is a car designer from Germany, a former Audi Group head designer, and currently a BYD Group head designer. ( Wikipedia)

      Yeah, if you check.. there are lot of very Senior designers hired by Chinese auto makers.. hongqi hired rolls designer.. geely has volvo.. guess it's hard for legacy auto makers to keep their top talent..

    In regards to the two tether points and the missing third one, bizarrely it's hidden in the middle behind the fabric. Not sure why they did that, but it is there. Very confusing.

    The NFC on the wing mirror is is you have the Byd app you can tap your phone on the nfc on the mirror then the car unlocks

    That was a really interesting review! I didn't think it would interest me enough to watch it all - but I did. To be fair it doesn't look a bad car for a "cheap" EV. Personally I'm not a fan of BYD's build quality. On a different note though - wing mirrors - here in Europe we call the mirrors on the door "door mirrors". Wing mirrors to us are mounted out front on the wings. Really old cars had wing mirrors and some Japanese imports.

      soooo you are experienced with BYD built quality? or are you just saying this out of your stereotyping mind? Just curious, since BYD has arrived not long ago to the western market but you sound like somebody who owned some BYD cars in the past.

    We only got the ATTO 3 recently.Only managed to look it over in the showroom but it was still quite impressive.Wish I could've gotten a test drive but I got there as they were closing up.Any other Chinese EV reviews coming up?I'm curious about the Wuling Air EV.Sadly it's nearly $40k here in Aussie dollars.😮

    Hi Paul, I currently have a Model Y and have been driving a BMWi3 Rex for the last 5 years. I have an Atto3 on order thinking about swapping out of the BMW to the Atto3. How would you think the BYD would compare ???

      The Atto 3 is much better than any sub 50k EV has the right to be. You won't be disappointed

      I3 is more dynamic and the interior is way nicer, but you pick up a decent drivetrain and newer infotainment tech in the BYD.

    15:47 It seems this particular Atto 3 comes with pins for 3-phase. Does it mean 11 kW AC charging may be possible?

    • @jonathankelly5997
      @jonathankelly5997 2 года назад +1

      No, it's actually only single phase - 7kW max.

    • @jonathankelly5997
      @jonathankelly5997 2 года назад +1

      7kW max on AC. On DC it's getting a max of 89kW in the wild.

      basically, the car supports 3 phase 11kw but somehow all the RHD market they just underrate the charging maybe because of distributor want to keep low output rate for 8 year warranty on battery. I dont know tbh but in china and european countries it can do 3 phase up to 11 kw

    • @cirrusclouds8295
      @cirrusclouds8295 2 года назад +2

      If it helps lower cost, then I think 7kW is good enough. Not many homes have 3 phase power (or willing to pay for installation) anyway.
