The NBA Is Cheating But Nobody Cares

  • There's cheating going on in the NBA and the NBA is allowing it. #nba
This NBA reddit post broke the NBA for a day. NBA Commissioner held an emergency meeting 24 hours after reddit user claimed that the Grizzlies scorekeeper was posting fraudelent numbers.
The post has 67k upvotes and got the attention of the NBA and even the betting world. For a brief moment, betting websites didn’t allow any bets for DPOY, which added more fuel to the fire that the post was valid. The numbers are actually pretty crazy, 2.87 stocks (steals + blocks) in road games vs 5.51 in home games. How can a player be 96% more efficient at home?
But before we get to JJJ’s home stats, in January 1997, this got counted as an assist, it was part of Nick Van Exel’s 23 assist game, but several assists didn’t make sense and that’s because the Grizzlies scorekeeper admitted to manipulating the numbers for the Lakers guard, but not for the reason you think.
There’s cheating going on and the NBA is allowing it to happen. I’m going to go through 3 key ways the NBA is helping change up numbers and expose the darker multi billion dollar business behind why they let it happen starting with how stats can be manipulated.
And that’s exactly what happened in 1997. The Lakers are playing the Grizzlies. And point guard Nick Van Exel who averages 8.5 assists went off, dropping assist after assist after, wait how is this an assist?
The scorekeeper admitted to counting extra assists not to help the Lakers, but so that more people would talk about the game and hopefully talk more about the Grizzlies. Even back then, crazy statlines could draw the attention of media. He confessed in an article what he did and how it all works. As the article says he quickly found that a scorekeeper is given broad discretion over two categories: assists and blocks.
An assist “is awarded only if, **in the judgment of the statistician**, the last player’s pass contributed directly to a made basket”.
The way to get a guy extra rebounds is if a shot goes up and someone tips it and someone else recovers it, you can give it to either one. Rodman would get those all the time. He also said balls going out of bounds that should be team rebounds get awarded to a home player in the area. The day he gave 23 assists, he got a good job from the higher ups.
But ok one game, that’s harmless, what could go wrong? (show a chart of Jock Stockton is the all time assists leader, with almost 4,000 more than the next closest person. That’s 30% more assists than the next great point guard. Please. Chris Paul has made this point before “I don’t know who the statisticians was, who used to do the stats in Utah, but ain’t nobody catching that.”
but there’s incentive for incorrectly ruling stats and that’s way #2, stat inflation is leading to views. Do you remember when Westbrook averaged a triple double in 2017 and the attention he got. Well, that kickstarted an age of several players going for triple doubles and total triple doubles per season skyrocketing.
If there was ever a chance to do some Stat padding, the best place to do it is when the rules literally say you can:
Now, assists are rewarded very generously. Generally in the 2000s, an assist was if the shot was taken right after the pass or maybe one dribble into the shot. Of course exceptions existed but that was the standard. Now, you can pass to a player, he can do a whole series of moves, make the shot, and the passing player would get the assist. You know how Nick Van Exel’s BS passes were getting counted as assists? Well that happens on a regular today, especially in the post.
Why would the league allow fake stats? It’s no secret that ratings are slipping in the NBA and fans are getting over going to games and seeing their favorite players in their best fashion outfit on the bench instead of playing in games. Boosted Stats are a great way to get attention. Everyone loves the performance that breaks a record or sets an all time mark. statistics play an important role in determining awards and honors, But the NBA is in bed with gambling, announcing partnerships with FanDuel and Draftkings in 2021 and that’s way #3. Sports betting is no longer the dark underbelly of leagues, these are big revenue generating partnerships that rely on accuracy. Millions are bet daily on things like how many points a player will score or even if AD will get over or under 2 blocks this game? Like I said earlier, the NBA was charging a fee to ensure fairness. I mean Eric Lewis just retired after everyone finding out he was literally a Celtics fan and you could see him getting frustrated when other teams scored against them mid game. Remember this.
The NBA knows how important stats are, but they are letting this slide and that’s what I find a problem with.

It's like how do you ignore the fact the 1. the ref did not call the foul MJ was looking for, that's why MJ was talking to him... and 2. that was Jordan's literal last game in the NBA, the ref was just being friendly, sarcastic, and kinda telling him to shut up. He was being funny because it was literally the last time MJ would play in the NBA. Also, I'm preetty sure he was aware of the microphone on the front of his shirt...But go ahead, see what you want to see there I guess, bias, you got 'em!!!

They should just have an objective standard for assists. In the NHL it is an assist no matter how long after the pass the person scores. As long as they dont lose possession all passes leading into it are tracked. In the NBA people hang onto possession for more time generally so maybe set a dribble limit and EVERY pass that the person then shoots counts as long as its less than that dribble limit. Be it one or two dribbles or whatever. People might complain that this changes the assist metric and you cant compare eras...but you cant even compare building to building RIGHT NOW because it is a made up stat.
