We Are Witnessing The End of The NBA As We Know It

  • The NBA is changing and not for the better. #NBA
JJ is asking Derrick White why it’s so hard to get stops in the NBA.
The NBA has the highest offensive ratings in NBA history, even adjusted to the fast pace right now. Last year the Kings had the highest offensive rating ever at 118.6 and this season, there are 4 teams with a higher offensive rating than that. Scoring is becoming too easy.
140 point games are common place. Last week we literally had the most 150 point games in a single night.
**It almost takes away the importance of each bucket**; We have multiple 30 point scorers. 10 years ago there were only 19 20+ point scorers. Now there are 40…3.
Then JJ lists 6 recent rule changes that favor the defense and asks anyone to point out any rule changes that helped the offense.
How about for 1, Freedom of Movement?…that’s just one, there are several but first why was JJ so angry?
Perhaps the reason JJ was so passionate about this is because he believes that the players of today are better than the players of yesterday *and that’s true in an absolute sense.*
The players of today are more skilled and more talented in huge part because they got to see what the players of yesterday brought to the game and then work on that for years longer. And there’s two reasons for that. Think about Allen Iverson’s crossover. His handle was completely new in the league in the late 90s and broke so many ankles. Younger players could practice that sort of handle and make that part of their games, but the NBA also relaxed its palming officiating. Was there a rule change? No, but as Isiah Thomas said, that would usually get called a carry until it wasn’t.
The freedom of movement emphasis was brought on in 2020.
The emphasis was to call fouls on any arm hooks preventing offensive and defensive players from moving. But also, and most importantly, not letting defenders impede the path and movement of off ball offensive players. Uhh, that makes it really difficult to play defense…
The NBA was incentivizing moving off ball, specifically because now you couldn’t really get in their path, moving the game more to the Warriors style of basketball. Defenses had to adjust to no longer being able to be physical with players without the ball, relying more on team defense. And the crazy thing is, this wasn’t the only time the NBA did this, but the entire league changed in 2018.
LaMarcus Alridge said it changed the game. And he was right because the league average jumped up by 5 points a game from 106.3 to 111.2. That is the second biggest change in a single season in NBA history.
    But why?
It allowed smaller, less physically imposing players, like Curry to go wherever they wanted and if you touched them, it would be a foul. Someone show me that that was changed since 2018? No? That’s right. Heck a year later Curry said "It gives perimeter guys a lot more freedom, "A lot more opportunity for creativity and obviously challenge defense in terms of schemes and how you approach that end of the floor”
And don’t forget what Luka said. It’s easier to score in the NBA than in the Euroleague and the talent is supposedly in the NBA right? Not if you handicap them defensively.
Less fouls, working more for buckets.
And that’s piece #3, the average NBA fan is getting desensitized to scoring and threes.
Offensive records being broken now don’t mean as much nor capture as much attention even though ESPN will try to stuff it down our throats.
*NBA saw viewership go down and thinks offense is the answer.* We’ve always heard that people want to watch good offense, watch the ball go through the hoop, but right now it’s a bit the opposite. The value of a bucket is low, some one averaging 20 points no longer means they are one of the best scorers even though broadcasters are still treating 20 points like it was 15 years ago.
I don’t think more talent ever gets less exciting. But I think the way the game is officiated and what the NBA chooses to focus on can make the game less exciting.
If everyone is able to make threes, it makes it less spectacular. If every team is running 5 out, it makes it normal. If everyone was a 6’ 8” 250 pound beast that can run as fast as a guard, than LeBron wouldn’t be special in the NBA, he would be average and that’s the point I’m making.
If you make rules that allow players to do previously one of one talents, then that’s not talent, that’s the NBA making things happen. And if it’s manufactured and not authentic, then it feels off, the thing you can’t put you finger on and that’s what’s happening now.

The Euroleague and FIBA basketball ARE more engaging watches because they are playing actual basketball, not a staged skills and dunk event masquerading as basketball. The lack of allowable defense has moved pro basketball from offense/defense to more of a single player type game like bowling or archery where the highest score wins and there is no defense in the design.

Freedom of movement was a big one, yes, but does no one else remember the Hibbert rule? The NBA hated the fact that the pacers found a way to slow down LeBron so much that they radically altered the way that they officiated verticality, directly leading to the Harden free throw era. One of the big things we were taught growing up in the early 2000s is that if you created the contact with a player in their own space it wasn’t a foul on them. That one change entirely eliminated that in the NBA.

Two things, players can travel now and carry the ball. That creates a plethora of offensive moves that the defense just couldn't keep up. Just try blocking a three step back shot like Harden does. But ultimately, defense is 99% effort and players today don't value defense anymore as much as before. Give 12 pts a game while averaging 38% and above behind the arc and you'll get a solid contract.

I'm a bit younger of a fan, not old enough to remember early 2000's basketball, but my time as a fan was at its prime from 2010-2016. You covered a lot of my thoughts and reasons for why I only exclusively watch College basketball now and not the NBA. The first time I saw a 130+ game I was like "oh yeah that's cool" but now with every game pretty much having a score like that, it's become less special and boring. This is because there is:
1.) Little to no defense being played due to rule changes and also the look of a lack of desire to play defense and give up easy points
2.) Continuous flopping and doing very intentional acts to draw fouls
3.) Literally everyone is shooting threes or its a dunk/layup and there's no in between
4.) An average play now averages like 20 points per game
5.) The traveling has gotten egregious
Overall these games feel meaningless and like a waste of time to watch and I have zero interest in it when I can just watch College basketball where there are some similarities to this, except they actually play defense and with physicality, they call most flops as fouls on the player who flopped, and the game results aren't as predictable. Makes me feel better that I was not alone with the way I've felt about the NBA in recent years.

i feel like those NBA Execs forgot the one important fact as to why fans like high scoring games: they werent seen so often. at this rate, it's only a matter of time that someone breaks 100 points in a game. just this past week, 4 players scored 70+, suggesting kobe's 81 record is about to be surpassed soon, and wilt's 100 isnt far behind. these high scoring games are not a spectacle anymore. another good example is just these past playoffs: curry went off for 50 points, which at the time, this was the highest points scored by a single player. and then not 3 weeks later, tatum breaks that record with 51. scoring records dont mean anything anymore because they get passed around like a blunt.

No, modern players are *not* more talented. It's easy to score when the defense can't touch you, and no, those rules don't date from 2018, they date from 2004. They just took a while before GMs caught on and started scheming and drafting to the new paradigm the rules created.
There's no point in drafting a 6'10" bruiser who can contest the paint, because nobody is driving the lane, they're ducking around a screen and jacking up 3's, and if you commit to stop that play, *then* they cruise to the hoop for a layup.

Freedom of movement wasn't a rules change, it was just something the league wanted to emphasise more.
And your last 2 points don't make any sense.
Flopping? How does that help the offense? It's called like once every few games on the defense if you really want to stretch that and say its helping the offense.

Anyone that doesn't think hand checking didn't make things easier in todays game , try to find a group of guys to play and play with "court rules" and then change to "NBA rules" and it makes it so much easier to score and harder to defend. I didn't believe for while it mattered until someone pointed it out during playing a pick up game , I don't think I fully understood what hand checking meant since we always allowed it when when playing pick up games or in the back yard.

I understand the impact that it has on the history of the league, but I believe this is the best generation of basketball in the NBA, and it’s amazing to see how far the league has come. I think we just need to wait for the new wave of defense, whatever that might look like.

it's no so much new rules that favor the offense, it's the lack of enforcing the current rules.

Offense has been favored because the league believes it drives viewership up. All this inflation means records are coming and going, what's more enticing than "tune in to watch ____ break the record for _____ tonight!" or "____ is on a record breaking pace this season" to incentivize people to pay for tickets to witness history in person?
I think a lot of people, including myself, have seen the changes over the past decade. What I'm shocked about is the NBA media and personalities just playing right into it, I used to appreciate JJ's input on the game and commentary... but it seems like he's just ignorant and high off his own supply, no better than Nick Wright or Collin Cowherd.

This is what happened with baseball. They juiced the balls to combat ratings tanking, more strikeouts and walks, more home runs, less views.
Then they went the complete opposite direction, incentivized base hits, steals, and added a pitch clock, and the viewers have come right back.

I don't know why people act surprise by that news, does anyone not remember Adam Silver ushering those exact words bac in 2014 when he was taking over the commissioner job? I remember hearing him say that, then when I waited for the NBA season to start, and watched few games, the enrgy and aura felt dead, like the soul and life of the game was taken away, so I stopped watching full games, and just watched highlights, any teams that won in the adam silver era looks sus and fake to me for some reason

The mistake that NBA make were thinking that fans like high scoring games, however what the fan actually into was and still is great and exciting offense, and great offense come with great defense, you not gonna find making an open 3 more exciting than making a tough three with defender hand on your face

I stopped watching the NBA, and switched to college. There is obviously a MASSIVE skill gap between college and the NBA, but I think it's an overall better product. College is way more physical, way more passing. It's also super diverse in terms of game plans... some teams have success running through their big men, others have more 3 point shooting, etc... It's like watching MMA, where you get to see how styles match up. Also, I was shocked at some of the no-calls I see in college... it's so refreshing to see. Plus, those college kids play like their lives depend on it.

Yes. Defence rule changes need to be implemented. Even just take away the freedom of movement act, and moving offensive screens. I miss it. Feels like every time someone drives to the basket now, it goes in or it’s a foul. Officiating needs to be less bias and more objective. Thank you for the video.
