Why Team USA Basketball Will Keep Getting Worse

  • Team USA basketball will keep getting worse. #nba
In 2012, Team USA with one of the best rosters assembled beat Nigeria by 83 points. In 2021, Team USA played Nigeria again and lost. And just two weeks ago, they didn’t even get a medal in FIBA 2023.
Who was on the roster…oh. Before 2021, USA basketball had only 5 losses..in 85 years. 3 of those losses happened in 2004, the worst performance in USA basketball history. So when Team USA loses in basketball it’s a big deal.
If we take a look at the roster this year, not a single player had ever been part of a world cup or Olympics before and only had 3 all-stars in total. Anthony Edwards was our best individual player and that’s part of piece #1 players are more concerned with resting than representing the country.
We went from this to this.
Yet this time, it wasn’t due to injuries that some of the best players said no. Rather, the offseason is for rest and that’s fair, especially if you had a deep playoff run. But we’re in the age of load management. Players are already sitting out NBA games, voluntary extra games seems far fetched. In 2019, LeBron, Curry, Kawhi, Harden, everyone said no for the World Cup. There was only one All-NBA player on the roster.
Kevin Durant, Paul George, Lillard, Bam, everyone said no this year. Leading to players with no All-NBA players on the roster this year. So the roster was filled with several first time international players.
It all changed one day during the 2006 FIBA World Cup in Japan when Coach Mike Krzyzewski was coaching Team USA for the very first time… and it didn't go NEARLY as expected… well at least for the players, namely guys like LeBron and Dwight Howard. You see… during an exhibition game versus Lithuania, Coach K absolutely obliterated Dwight Howard for dosing off on defense and how he was defending the pick-and-roll… and Dwight Howard - a bonefied star and probably the best center in the NBA at the time - didn't LIKE IT!
In 2007 Team USA would have a scrimmage with their full roster, a duel between LeBron and Kobe in which Kobe hit a game winner, a whole year early. The main players were set, not some random last minute team.
But, no… it didn't end there… because Coach K took Kobe aside one day when they were watching film on there games… and said to the best player in the world “Those were some bull-t shots.” He directly questioned Kobe's shot selection…
But to Kobe's credit… he responded with a simple, “OK, I gotcha, coach.”
And then came 2008… a new era, new time… what we famously remember at the Redeem Team! It had been two years now since Coach K was introduced, the stage was set, and the players were locked in…
Coach K appointed Kobe and LeBron as the leaders of the team. Kobe made it his mission to one up him in competitiveness… diving on the floor in practice, intense defense, and it set the tone for the rest of the guys on the roster
As the USA went on to go a perfect 8-and-0 in the tournament and bring gold back to the territory it belongs… the team didn't just go on to become the notorious 'Redeem Team' - the United States took stake as number one with a winning identity and a championship culture.
2016 might've been Coach K's last year on the Olympic stage… but he didn't go out without helping deliver a third straight gold medal…
No LeBron, no Kobe, no D-Wade, no CP3… no PROBLEM!
Team USA has since struggled with the X's and O's, and with the foundational aspect of the game…
Olympic competition has grown massive, international talent has evolved RAPIDLY… to the point that the chemistry and attitude Coach K instilled is now more crucial than ever and needed to win games, something that’s missing.
Those were the words of the late Kobe Bryant going back to 2019 when Team USA strung together some L's in the FIBA games. And that’s piece #3 competition is much more difficult now, the game is more international.
Team USA was outscored 16-2 over the closing minutes of the ballgame while France looked like a well-oiled machine on both ends with all their players in cahoots with the gameplan! Team USA, though they had far better talent… scored just 11 points in the third quarter… proving that talent can only take you so far.
If we backtrack to 2008… there were just 17 NBA players that played internationally, but not for Team USA. In 2016, that number grew so much that now just TWO of the 12 competing teams in the Rio Olympics didn't have at least one NBA player on their roster…
    So what’s the solution?
Finding a coach who is able to handle several personalities while still being respected and listened is tough, but one coach comes to mind and that’s Erik Spoelstra who has made literally any squad whether it’s filled with stars or filled with undrafted players get to the finals. So Team USA, get it done.

One of the biggest problem with modern NBA is the rules. It’s too far away from FIBA rules. It’s a joke. In the 90’s and early 2000’s it was somewhat close to FIBA.

    • @robotube7361
      @robotube7361 8 месяцев назад +55

The problem is much deeper. The rules are practically the same. We are talking about minute differences.
The problem is coaching in the states has no merit.
What is different between USA and Europe is the coaches.
In NBA the players are walking all over the coaches. In Europe- the coaches have the central role when it comes to teamplay and strategy overall.
American players are all about individual performances and promoting themselves. In Europe this is a big no no where the team is more important than the individual. teamplay is everything in Europe and always was. Ball movement, finding shortcuts outsmarting the players etc.
So back in the day USA was producing way bigger and much stronger players that could easily even score against a double team from other countries. These days the Europeans cought on with the training and beefed up their players to endure not to be overpowered easily by NBA pros.
much stricter Fitness regimes and especially strength programmes were implemneted and this produced European players that can easily deal with NBA super athletes.
Europeans are still long way from producing super athletes but then again- they dont need to. They need their athletes to be athletic JUST ENOUGH for the teamplay to work its magic.
Basketball is a team sport and USA is unable to keep their national team consistent enough to actually build a solid team structure. Basically American teams in International competition are all improvising.
Maybe this worked in the past but today as Ive said, this doesnt work anymore, where Internatinal teams play for years together. You cant beat a team that played together through several tournaments with an ever rotating teams.
So if USA wants to win, they need to get a NBA team that played together 82+ games the previous season or star building an international team of players that are willing to commit to several years of playing for Team USA.

@@youngrody2386Exactly. I posted basically the same thing. NBA’s rules favor creating space and wide open lanes, discouraging contact, all so the high fliers can fly high on their way to the hoop and not be met at the rim. It looks good on TV and TikTok.
Everything today is about looking good. Even the shoes. Players wear lows and mids with less ankle protection because they sell better for daily wear and allow harder crossovers. So instead of enforcing highs to protect their ankles, the NBA change the jumper rules to tell defenders “no hard closeouts into the shooters space” and we get flagrants for crowding jump shooter and the fadeaway jumper…a critical skill for international play…is now totally unnecessary. And the root cause is all to sell shoes.

When you have a so individualistic mindset in your society, it's translating into every part even professional sport. In our societies, in Europe, there still a bit of this idea of unity around a more bigger goal than yourself...and this culture is still living into some sports and basketball is one of those where you can still witness it. Team first, individualities second. It's up to the NBA to change their rules and find a common ground between circus basketball and pure basketball.

    1. Steve Kerr is algo a good option, but he can not make miracles with the roster he got.
    2. Time is also important. You can not just put a bunch of guys together a couple of weeks before a World Cup. The world is not 1992 anymore.
    3. In this last World Cup we saw the biggest issue with USA against FIBA rules and strategy: they can not defend consistently when offense is complex.
You can bring the best squat, and they will probably lose because the rule and strategy gap is becoming wider and wider.
You can not expect them to win anymore just doing isos, pick&rol and apply poor defense.

I think the most important thing is his mid-range shooting. FIBA 3 point lines is about 3 feet nearer. It is actually a 2 pt mid-range shot in NBA. Kobe is one of the most lethal midrange shooter in NBA. He had no problem in his 3 pt shots in FIBA games. Same thing for Kevin Durant. And I would say that nearly all 3 point shooters in NBA now will perish in FIBA games. They do not shoot 2 pt midrange shots in current NBA games. They do not have muscle memory of those shots. So team USA must select excellent 2 pt midrange shooter. Kevin Durant and Chris Paul are my first choices. 3 point shooters are not suitable in FIBA game. Every 3 point shooter will struggle badly in FIBA games and will bring down team USA.

Excellent analysis, but I missed two things. One in 2006 Team USA lost badly in FIBA with an stacked team with Wade, Bron and Melo with more experience. And two, the "redeem team" didn't roast anyone. Indeed they hard fought some of the matches they played. Even the final was difficult. They weren't the 92' Dream Team.
And I think there is something extra that needs to be fixed. The NBA is actually a league that is based on show more thatn of a competition. A lot of scoring and little defense. In the past you had the traditional big guy that bullied the paint and that figure doesn't exist anymore. Now it's all about the 3.
It's funny because Europeans ere supposed to be the "soft" shooters and now is the US who has problems to handle the paint and spam three pointers like there's no tomorrow.

The bigger problem is the NBA is nothing like international play. It’s less physical, there’s more space with the wider floor and the 3 seconds rule, and they play less zone.
Basically the rules are set up to be entertaining and create high scores for the TV audience, not to train them how to compete internationally. They are playing a different game. A vastly easier one, in the US.

2004 the media already were hyping both Lebron and Melo. So not an excuse that they were just rookies. Melo went to the playoffs. Lebron was already being compared to Jordan.
The NBA needs to revive Kobe or atleast his mentality. Players now are just to comfortable. As Shaq said NO ONE is near Kobe's mentality. As Kobe said players are just playing for salary cause they are now financially comfortable or something like that.

Kerr wanted to mix the much more stable bench unit with the unstable starters to not have such bad starts and endings to games.

It’s not load management, mentality, or effort it’s quite literally the value that international has in the eyes of fans. Even back in 96, being apart of America was still a huge deal, but we are in an age where someone has a gold medal, and it’s seen with indifference or even mockery, why would a player put any level of interest in awards that almost feel like an afterthought, so it’s going to be comprised of players who either want more national light that they won’t get in the nba, or guys who will contribute to a tournament of any kind because their team isn’t good enough,
I mean even as early as 2000 why isn’t Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, AI, and Webber not on that team? At least Jordan in 96 was somewhat understandable because of both the emotional side of the 1996 finals and the financial side with his contract, Shaq should have been on that 2000 team. And yes Kobe put some life back, but if fans walk and spit on the very tournament and then feel entitled to win don’t be shocked when it doesn’t go your way. The fans in Europe worship guys who represent their country and near cause a riot if you skip out. Same in Asia and South America. You want America’s best, then treat them with respect

these guys been playing since the 2000s. They've been in the Olympics. Obviously they're not performing at the same level they would in America, but because they're great, and LeBron has polished his game since then, there is hope for the USA.

Losing to Dillon Brooks is a federal crime. 39 pts against team USA you deserve prison time to think about your mistakes against DB.

People hate when i say this but time and time again, Steve Kerr proves he is the most OVERRATED COACH of all time
Dude has been carried by Steph on a team Marc Jackson built his entire career and people think he's actually a good coach
