I Have Never Seen A Star Fail Repeatedly Like This

  • Kevin Durant has failed like no other star has. #nba
Westbrook, Harden, Curry, Klay, Kyrie, Harden, Booker.
Instead of moving the ball around, Durant takes it from Curry and takes a pull-up three to win the game. No ball movement, and no Warriors action.
Kevin Durant started his career winning 4 scoring titles in his first 6 seasons and after becoming the villain by joining the Warriors, *I have never seen a player that talented repeatedly fail like this.*
Durant got swept by the Celtics while shooting 39% and getting locked up… had on and several off games against the Nuggets.
Why am I mentioning these two series? Because Durant was supposed to be a leader and that’s what he wanted, but that’s also Piece #1. KD has failed to be a true leader.
And since that moment, he’s gotten pretty much everything he’s wanted. His own franchise in the Nets that listened to anything he wanted. A trade right after he signed a 4 year extension to the team he wanted. But let’s look at the Nets for just a second.
But more drama, Harden would be unhappy with the direction the Nets were going and having to play more minutes, KD was frustrated with Steve Nash who literally said the only way the Nets could win was have Durant play more and Kyrie was still out cause of the vaccine. They were still first in the conference, but started falling when KD got hurt.
KD couldn’t necessarily keep the team together, but honestly, I don’t know if any player would, Harden demands a trade, the Nets get Ben Simmons Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, Kyrie comes back and the Nets now built in a way that Durant and Kyrie wanted were now in the playoffs. Healthy, decent role players, ready to take on whatever challeng--
Oh so his team didn’t work. KD’s style of basketball wasn’t winning basketball?
Yet, still, KD still called out his critics last season, saying: “I’m not a leader? What the f-k does that mean? A lot of people say I’m not a leader because I didn’t tell Kyrie to get vaccinated... or I didn’t condemn Kyrie for leaving the team, going out, and living his life.”
    No, KD...
Goran Dragic really had enough with the BS.
We aren’t questioning your leadership because of what you told or didn’t tell Kyrie -- we’re questioning your leadership because in 2022, KD would request a trade from the Nets for the first time.
But every really great player has to prove they can win a championship as the main guy. Kobe had to win without Shaq, LeBron had to be the main guy in Miami not Wade, but Durant left Curry to prove he could, but hasn’t. And that’s piece #2. Durant wanted to win AND be the top dog. For Durant, those two goals need to be fulfilled simultaneously, but which stars left championship situations to go off on their own and then failed? Maybe a young Tracy McGrady wanting to leave Vince Carter’s shadow? But even then they weren’t winning championships. Shaq left the Lakers but then won in Miami.
He might not really get that respect that Giannis or Kawhi would for leading a team to a championship.
His trade requests were to either the Suns or Heat, two teams who had recently made the finals and more importantly, had established cultures. Durant was done with trying to make his own.
But with both the Nets and the Suns and even the Warriors, we’ve seen problem. *Durant can be the man on the team, but only if he isn’t allowed to play his playstyle.*
And that’s piece #3, Durant needs to change what he thinks is winning basketball.
KD’s style works as a closer, works when the team is struggling and needs something, but can’t be the backbone of a great team.
Look at Kobe, who had to learn to trust his teammates, get them involved, and pick and choose his moments to take over. But if he never got those teammates involved, then they don’t give more effort defensively, they stagnate and are out of rhythm when you need them to hit big open shots.
Durant is unhappy with the supporting cast right? But that has been a theme everywhere he’s been that wasn’t the Warriors. He feels the need to do it himself and also gets upset at his teammates for not being as good as he wants. Part of that comes with being traded to an organization since they need to trade their assets to get you.
Which leads to hero ball, an offense that relies on KD to create and make several tough shots as the bare minimum to stay in games and not a layer of offense to turn to and then you get horrible shooting nights.
    And the cycle repeats.

This is why Charles Barkley was right when he said that KD is not a "bus driver" but a "passenger" when he was in Golden State. True leaders, being the best player on the team should not complain and whine so much when his team is not winning. This is why Steph deserves more credit and respect in my book. When the Warriors are down, have you ever heard him complain about his teammates and throw them under the bus? Yeah, you might here him complain about some calls and referee decisions here and there but that is normal. Name a player who doesn't complain about that? But dissing your teammates when your losing? KD has that in his default settings I guess.

He keeps wanting people to compare him to LeBron and that makes him look terrible. The particular factor in this case is that a team that can win with KD has to be functional without him, but the most effective way to build around LeBron is to have a team that doesn't work when he sits.

That’s why Russ (and Harden) could takeover in OKC when you’d expect.
He went to GSW so he can be an over-qualified role player (Also said he was thankful that he didn’t have to be a leader)
Teamed up with Kyrie and got swept up in his vision for a team. I think they would’ve been so much better off staying pact with that initial team at least through the 1st half of The next year. See what they had with everyone healthy. KD, Kyrie, Taurean Prince for defense, Joe Harris could really shoot back then, Jarrett Allen rim protection with a young Nic Claxton coming up behind him, and Spencer Dinwiddie who is a versatile pg that can come in and play 1-3, and i think they had their draft pick that year for trade value if they needed it. They probably could’ve come out the East with some patience, but they wanted an easier route with Harden.

The Suns offense revolves around KD, Book, and now Beal running iso. If the iso don’t work, they pass to the next iso man to rinse and repeat. There’s no plays happening really. Clippers are playing similar with Harden, PG and Kawhi, but it’s working for them. Suns need rugged defenders. KD wants to play with other scorers, that’s shown by who he keeps teaming up with. He's an interesting case. He always gives you 30, scores efficiently, plays defense, didn't get injured for most of his career, doesn't cause trouble. Hard to say exactly why he's never been able to do it as the driver. A few ideas:
    - Just bad luck. Lots of all time greats never got a ring even though they had all the assets and were good leaders.
    - He commands a huge bag which will weaken the rest of the team. He may also be like Lebron where he demands who plays around him.
    - He will give you 30 every night, but if the win requires he carry and go beyond that, he often doesn't. Supposedly one of the greatest most effortless scorers of all time, but he's never had a 60-piece.
    - The leadership thing others have said, but I think that's a smaller factor. Pushing guys who are not playing well to do better, getting the team going, etc.
    - His iso-heavy style may inhibit the offensive options for the rest of the team.

Also KDs defense was on another level on the GSW which a lot of people don't bring up. The GSW was the best team for KD honestly. His scoring was always there, but on the GSW he played defense and actually moved the ball that got others involved. His game was complete there but he reverted back to his Hero Ball mentality which clashed with the System. The Dray situation didn't happen over night...it was already brewing. KD checked out even during practice he wasn't vocal like he was and he started holding on to the ball more and more. That last possession where KD got mad at Dray for not giving him the ball was KDs fault for not running up the floor while the defense was scrambling to get back on D. Transition points is the GSW nail in the coffin for teams. Because its the one moment where the defense isn't set. Because they have to worry about the Splash Brothers being open and the Slim Reaper. Dray pushes the ball up and makes the pass to the open shooter. KD wanted to bring the ball up instead. Argument broke out, and the rest was history. Dray isn't innocent either. But the fall out was eventually going to happen.

    • @HypocritesExposd

KD learned the wrong lessons on the Warriors. He left there thinking hero ball was why they won because when plays broke down or when defenses ate up the passing lanes, they would rely on KD to hit a quick middie with a few seconds left on the clock. He said “Kerr’s system only works up to a certain point” meaning it only works in the first few rounds. This is not true at all either.
KD was perfect for GSW and GSW was perfect for him. GSW could count on him to bail them out on broken plays and KD could rely on GSW to just let him play without much pressure at all. This video only showed one play where KD was given a wide open bucket because they’d rather give KD 2 pts than Curry 3, but that kind of thing happened on a nightly basis. KD and the Suns might be great most nights, but in a seven game series it’s going to be tough to play the same style and think you’re gona beat 4 teams like that.

KD’s mistake in Brooklyn wasn’t Kyrie, it was Harden. In Phoenix, it’s Beal. 3 superstar teams don’t work because it kills your depth. It worked with the warriors because they had amazing depth even with KD. They didn’t have to give up a ton to get him, nor sell their soul (I.e offensive and defensive philosophies, team culture, etc.). I respect KD for leaving GS to be the man, but he didn’t seem to learn the lessons he should have learned there about culture and leadership. That was a very frustrating time watching as a Warriors fan, even though we were winning… because there were times it was not Warriors basketball. On the Nets Harden, Durant, and Kyrie couldn’t stay healthy. On the Suns, it’s really just Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Bradley Beal hasn’t been healthy. Suns have a bad bench. Suns have no point guard. Outside of the big three, Grayson Allen and Eric Gordon are the leading scorers. Those two won’t start for a lot of teams.
At this point in Durant’s career, teams give up too much in order to land him in a trade. He needs to stick with a team and let them accrue assets, and he’s not willing to do that. Now he’s old, and while he’s still putting up 30 points a game, his defense is just going to get worse.
I don’t agree with your take on there being no excuse for Kyrie, Simmons, and Durant not winning. At that point, the writing was on the wall. Harden asking out tainted the organization. Kyrie was a nutcase. Simmons wasn’t healthy. The organization was in disarray. That much noise around a team matters.
Do I think Durant jumps teams too much? Sure. But do I think he’s just this incapable player that’ll blow your teams’ chances of winning a ring and he’s incapable of being a #1 option? Absolutely not, that’s nonsense. Teams have to have bench depth and a stable atmosphere. The Suns don’t have that and the Nets didn’t have that either.

Even before Curry became what he became.. When he still had Ellis in the backcourt, I wanted GS to trade Curry to OKC for Westbrook..but when Kerr came and implemented the right system, and gave Curry the green light AND the confidence to fully become what he was capable of, it was obvious right from the jump, to me, that KD needed to get to GS.
I wish KD had become a Free Agent 3 years earlier, and signed in GS. Maybe the world wouldn't have lit him up for going, and they'd be known as the greatest dynasty to ever grace the court. And they would be known as a best duo, ever. I truly believe that.

Forgetting that though, honestly KD hasn't proven himself outside of the warriors yet. He has played in 4 super teams and only won with the 73-9 already champions experienced warriors team that would of won without him. Harden has failed, but he was very good on the nets and kinda had a point as he was doing everything by himself when Kyrie and KD failed, he failed on the Sixers but he wasnt bad. KD failed on the nets and suns, Westbrook failed but he has always been good WHEN IT MATTERED so I wouldn't really say so. Same for Steph. Klay only once after he was a big reason the warriors even made the playoffs hitting 300 threes in a season and well after his two devastating possibly career ending injuries. KD made a full recovery, and has just even before he got injured tried to do to much. He's a great player but honestly he's at best top 20 all time, Curry is top 10.

Remember... his MVP year, He also played with 2x other Future MVP'S.. Harden and Westbrook. ~ of course he will have the 2nd or 3rd best defender on him, NOT the top guy. AND Again.... He could only win, with Another MVP on the team. In this case, obviously, the Warriors.
Leadership, requires a radically different mentality. Leader of a TEAM! Just saying, that being a leader, requires a person, to Demand that SMOKE. IE, everything on him. Good, bad, ugly. A good leader, wants ALL the SMOKE. As a good leader, won't get the Smoke.

OKC traded away Harden before he entered his prime, because they gave his money to Ibaka. Russ was not playing on a MVP level in OKC. He took a lot of ill advised shots. Even when he was in 2017-2019, OKC was repeatedly getting eliminated out of the 1st round. Facts. This was with Oladipo, Sabonis, PG-13, and Melo.

MJ I’ve told this many times. The player movement and empowerment era is bad for basketball on so many levels. These guys never want the grind. Just want it easy. It’s that simple. Owners need to tell players to STFU and play. And if they refuse, don’t pay them. It’s simple. Players only request trades because they can and they get rewarded for it. Take away the rewards. They’ll stop.

Hot Take: Kevin Durant Is Not A #1.
Should be obvious but this has always been an issue people don't understand in every sport. He has Superstar talent but not Superstar mentality. I saw it clearly after the 2016 WCF against the Golden State Warriors. He just wants to "Hoop" he doesn't want to hold teammates accountable or do the things necessary to LEAD. He just wants to PLAY, that's not enough to be a number #1 on a championship winning team.......well unless you join the team that beat you.
There are so many players who couldn't do it, you gotta give respect to the ONES that did. Dirk has my respect, Curry has my respect, Jordan has my respect, LeBron has my respect, Duncan & Shaq have my respect, Yokic & Giannis did it with so many people against them. Durant took the easy way out and wants OUR respect.

He's at that point in his career where, as the best guy, he's got to be the leader.
And KD is a follower by nature. He does not want to be the leader; quiet, loud, whatever, of a team. He wants to sit back, be the best player, hoop, go home and collect Finals MVP honors. He very likely will not win another chip as a main cast member of a team.

What you say is true, in NBA
In Team USA the story is on his side : he won a World Cup in 2010 and the last 3 Olympic Gold Medal
    Each time being the leader
And he said once that his best experience ever was being part of the 2012 Team USA because he had the best teammates he ever has, and that's why he wants always to play with 3/4 All Stars.
I'm pretty sure that KD would prefer to play All Star Games (but seriously) 82 times rather than NBA.
