  • On September 11th, 1857, somewhere between 100 and 140 men, women and children were massacred in Utah at Mountain Meadows.
This is the story of that horrific event.
PS: Yes, we know the audio contains wind noise. This was filmed during the onset of a winter storm and it was unavoidable.

Wonderfully done video. I know that these don't bring the views that the firearm-related content does, but individuals like myself very much appreciate the time, effort, and personality you bring to the InRange channel with this content. My hope is that comments like this are encouraging to you all.

As someone who grew up in Utah in the 1990s /early 2000s I can attest to this event being largely glossed over in Utah History classes. I think a lot of people in Utah see any criticism of their church and it's past leaders as a direct attack on them without realizing that it's possible to criticize the vile actions of past LDS leadership without hating Mormons of today. I just wish the LDS church was willing to admit many of it's past deeds were less than noble, just as I wish the Catholic Church, US government or any other longstanding organization would admit.

What an incredibly sad story. To make it so far across the plains and all their dangers just to be killed by yout fellow countryman seeking the same thing you were; Freedom, Peace and a safe place to call home. Thanks InRange for making these videos as only you can!

No way! I'm actually a (distant) descendant of the Baker family, my mother told me about this story when I was in high-school. Thanks for covering this interesting piece of history.

I'm so glad that you guys take the time to tell these stories. Nobody else seems to care anymore and soon many will simply be lost to time I'm afraid.

These videos are hands down some of the best content that InRange TV does. Please continue as much as you can. We enjoy them and I get the feeling that you enjoy doing them. Rarely is there an unique story. History is repeated.

You were finally able to get up there and make this one. I really like the different and not well known western stories.

Senior church officials were so upset over this atrocity that they promptly returned the stolen property and kidnapped children to relatives in Arkansas and vigorously prosecuted the militia members for murder and rape (yep, they did that too per court testimony, since they were going to kill them anyway they reasoned).

I’m always thankful for the effort you put into these, despite the low viewership. Those of us that do watch, very much appreciate them.

Fantastic episode Karl! Truly a moving and heartfelt telling of a shocking episode from history, you have an excellent sense of how to convey the tragedy of what happened. I never would have known about this had it not been for your efforts; I really do appreciate the Old West Vignettes and really hope you continue to put in the effort of making them. Please keep it up!

Thanks Karl, Ive been waiting for another Old West Vignette. I have heard of this incident before, but some of those were interesting facts that you brought up I don't remember hearing about. Like the Brigham Young letter showing up a day late, and the befitting justice that was issued to John Lee. I also like how you mentioned a little about some of the persecution that The Mormons went through. Its a sad part of history and I appreciate what you do in taking the time to produce these types of videos as well as the other videos you make here on InRange.
