Great stuff as always man! Rob, I see you place a little armor oil or some kind of tire shine on your tires. Do you ever feel like you can lose traction and slip? Now I like it and want to do it, just wanted to see if you ever had any issues with it?

Robert you were soooo much in my head with all you demonstrations, I remember the last time you were on that pine needle road your peg hit the reflector and pulled you down. All the other RUclipsrs only give procedures how to execute the U-turn but never address the psychological part of the turn. You ate definitely the BEST. thanks for all you do.🇺🇸👍👍

I really like how you deal with the psychological factors of slow speed skills. 20ft is 20ft but, put a couple of big petrol pumps on either side, and the mental challenge increases while the physical challenge does not.
    Great stuff.

Robert, between church services I took out the bike with a bunch of cones. You’re right; improvement came in a one hour session. I started at 27’ (u-turn) and gradually moved it in to 18. The 2 things that concentrated on (which I got from your channel) that made for such great improvement were:
    1. Preload and KEEP it loaded. On the street I let the RPMs drop and wonder why momentum doesn’t take me through the u-turn. Videos of you and Gerry make it “appear” that momentum pulls you through.
    2. Head & eyes. I put a pile of cones on the other side of the parking lot to look back at. I’ve been known to be “obscene” (looking at those cones on the left). So, this helped.
    Thank you for your instruction!

I love this idea because it keeps you accountable to staying in control and putting the bike where YOU want it. Not where IT wants to go.
I have taught my truck driving students the same thing. When backing a trailer, pick a parking spot and put the trailer there, not where the trailer wants to go.
I used barrels for my trucking students and told them that each of those barrels represented high end, expensive show trucks.

Nice video Rob, I can do 18 or less Uturn for quite some time now, but in real world, when there's grass on the sides or ridge in the middle of the road it always send me into self doubt and all the beginners' habits creeps in. My take away is reaching the 18 or less is not the destination, it requires constant repetition and reinforcement to perform it over and over again in the real world.

Making U-turns with confidence is an important skill every rider must grasp to safely ride. Too many still don't have it or don't know what it takes to properly execute a good U-turn. I was thinking about this while I attended Ocean City Bike Week in MD about three weeks ago. I saw many riders nervous as heck to make a U-turn, duck walk a U-turn at an intersection, or make an unnecessarily wide one that took three lanes on the opposite side of the street. I agree with Robert, this skill and others associated with this that he teaches make your riding much more enjoyable.

Great vid! I'm just getting back into riding after a long break and I can tell my handling is WAY off. I'm less confident and kind of shaky on my Harley. Thank God my BMW isn't running cuz that thing has a really nasty habit of almost dumping me at low speeds. I've never had that experience on my Harley. BUT my handling really needs work.
I took my first Motorcycle Safety Foundation course over 20 years ago and I can still hear my instructor saying "Look where you want the bike to go". I even talked to him about a curve that's close to my house and it's difficult to navigate because the turn is banked AND one of the entrances to the road is at the top of the bank.
SO to explain the difficulty. The road you're on, you're facing North. The road you want to be in is running East and West and you want to go West. However right where you enter the road is a curve from a due West direction into a North direction. It's about a 90 degree tight turn that's banked. SO you enter the road, on the turn at the top of the bank. SO what's difficult about this is because you're at low speed so you can't take advantage of the bank in the curve.....you actually have to do a NEGATIVE CAMBER turn. What I mean by that is when you turn Left, you'll be leaning left and you have to HOLD that left lean while you start to lean to the more upright position to make the bike follow the curve but you can't put the bike at a normal riding angle cuz you're going too slow and the road is too curved, you'll dump the bike on the right side.
So I'm explaining the challenges I'm having to my instructor and asked him for suggestions and you know what he said? "Just keep looking where you want to go and your body and bike will do the rest" haha I felt kinda stupid but I tried it the next time and he was ABSOLUTELY right. Once I got the hang of that it wasn't nearly as bad....but it's still a goofy position.
Even to this day in 2024, when I get spooked and/or worried something bad is about to happen, his voice pops back into my head.

Dear Sir, I love your videos and lessons. I am from the Netherlands and i have driven sportsbikes and adventure bikes, now i am driving a BMW R18. I totally get your excercises and they work !
But i also came across some videos of motor officee training, stating total clutch control and no pre loading. For the BMW R18 i fell some pre loading is necessary since with just the clutch it is not smooth enough, to rely just on clutch, what do you think sir bevause i like total clutch control but does not seem to suit the characteristics of my bike. Thank you for your videos and the provided techniques!

Hello Robert, this is the first time seeing a video of yours and I'm really enjoying and definitely subbing. I do have one question. I just bought a '98 Kawasaki VN800 Classic Vulcan and I was wondering on what gear you're making these U-turns. Is it best in 1st or 2nd?

Question I wanted to ask - I'm changing the handle bar on my bike is that going change anything with my turning now that I'm doing slow speed stuff? I'm going to how get use to them too

    • @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle

It could change. It depends on what you’re getting. Will you still be able to reach your clutch lever comfortably with the bars turned all the way to the right?
