I get what you are saying . I've been riding since the early 70's and could do full lock u-turns on any small to medium bike. Didn't even realize the subtle, subconscious inputs involved in doing so. This was one of the hardest exercises for me. I understood the concept to be true but it took a lot of practice to get it in my head. Thank you for helping me be a better rider.

I am 77 and just started to learn to ride a motorcycle a month ago and bought a little Honda Grom for practice. I have watched a lot of RUclips videos and often each one has good info. Your video is the best explanation I have ever seen. And yes I am afraid of falling down especially when I try to do sharp left or right slow turns. I am going to practice what you showed till my fear of dropping the bike is gone. Thanks for that great video

Same here, I hate that one tiny scrape on my engine guards costs 1/20th of the cost of my bike to respray a 1 inch spot of scratching. That is the real fear, if it was the training company's Road Glide you wouldn't care about dropping the bike 10+ times while learning.
One of the things that helped me learn bike riding is the fact that I started with a 50 CC as a first bike then worked up to a 300, a 500 a 600 etc, and over the years, as my finances grew, finally a Softail Heritage. It is much more difficult or learn and get confidence if you first bike is a monster. Also it is better to put down a cheap (at the time) 300, 200 pound bike while learning than a $25,000, 700 lb bike. Practice, practice, practice! If I put down my gorgeous Heritage I would be really miffed.
Robert, I remember watching you when you initially started. There are many excellent instructors out there. However, the way in which you teach simply connected with me. Thanks to you, with diligent practice, I have been able to be the boss of my H-D Sportster 1200 48, Deluxe, and Heritage in short time. Within the last year, I have been able to be the boss of my '20 Indian Chieftain DarkHorse. No longer do I avoid crowded gas stations, parking lots, challenging U-turn situations, heavy traffic, etc. Your slow speed practice instructions is critical to anyone wishing to be the boss of their motorcycles and to truly enjoy all of the wonderful aspects, which our motorcycles can afford everyone.
Thank you very much! It’s my pleasure. 😊 Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my RUclips channel!👍🏾😊 ruclips.net/user/BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
The confidence gained by understanding how to properly apply power to the rear wheel makes everything else involved with low speed maneuvers much easier. Excellent explanation and demonstration of a simple but often misunderstood concept.
Hey Robert, ya wanna know the irony of your question and this topic. When I first started riding back when I was in my 20s , I just rode. Slow, faster, just rode. I could do a lock to lock uturn in just feet, over curbs, speed humps we dirt, grass. Didn't matter. Did it without a second thought. Now, at 70, and haven't ridden for a couple of years, vids like yours make me self conscious. I remember your vids when you were, pay it ahead. I believe? You're a good teacher no doubt. And I don't ride monster bikes. My old VMAX weighed just 620 lbs. And it was like riding a bicycle still because I never watched a video. Now after just having a triumph Bonneville, only 500 lbs. I get self conscious sometimes. Thanks Robert, happy holidays bro.
I'm right there with Billy Helmick. Been riding for over 40 years and this has never been explained to me. Sir, you are a brilliant teacher! Now...I know what one of the first things I'm going to do once this snow melts. Thank you!
That’s a great exercise, to feel the bike falling and then using the clutch, that feeling where to bike lifts itself up with clutch/throttle, that really feels like magic!
This video has changed everything for me and my riding! THANK YOU! I am a newbie rider and lack confidence, especially at low speeds, and never knew how or what to practice to correct these issues of feeling out of control and falling. This was NOT taught to me in my safety class. The friction zone was taught to us, but the "preload" concept was never emphasized or explained. This video explains it perfectly! I finally get it!
I wish I had videos like this when I started riding 25 years ago. I learned the hard way over the years. Even with all of my experience I still learn from the BOSS. Thank you for teaching every level of rider to get better.
Thanks for the training. I recently got a KLR 650. I go to a church parking lot with a friend to train on tight, slow riding control. I went out for the second time today (after watching one of your videos) and improved from using your techniques. I did drop it once (thank God for crash bars) because I a had the clutch too far from the friction zone. Also, after watching this after the session I realized that I'm not preloading consistently. With repetition, I think that my confidence and competence will continue to improve. Keep posting and thanks again.
Just bought a BMW R18 TC which i know you dont love...:) I need to improve my slow riding skills altho ive been riding for 50yrs ive just never really practised slow stuff. You are the 'man' for that and i greatly appreciate your videos.
Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 Also, thank you for the compliment! Congratulations on your R18! Now show her who the Boss is!
I think that this exercise number three is more detailed for my understanding. It is a combination and harmony as in a musical orchestra. I can see very clearly when you open your hand and reach the friction zone, very good explanation - thanks!
Robert you would not believe how terrified I was to make a u turn on my road glide when I first got it, but after watching one of your slow speed video's my confidence level improved a 100% after practicing .Practicing being the boss of my motorcycle thanks again. ✌🏾✌🏾💯💯
I always love the challenge, I'm a brand new motorcycle rider and I went ahead and bought a 2015 Victory Magnum, yes I know and trust me it's not the first stupid thing I've ever done and for sure won't be the last. Thanks to your videos LT and ride like a pro (Jerry Palladino) I can ride my heavy bike with confidence after several practice hours, I do still drop it but I'm not taking it up the highway before I can be the boss of it on low speeds then I'll practice emergency braking on high speeds. Thanks again Lt. Simmons and keep up the good work.
Sir, I'm 64 years old and a new rider. I've found out, from my experience, that it's not only about "looking where I want to go" but actually "Looking AND SEEING" where I want to go. Hope this helps explaining the process going forward because I'm still struggling with "Seeing" where I want to go and making it happen. Thank you for the instructive information.
Man, Step 5 at 12:40 is something I needed to know and hear. I had 3 drops during training so it’s always on my mind. The trust and believe exercise as explained here is the next thing I’m going to try. It clicked in my mind, now I have to feel it and once it clicks in real world, I suspect my fears will be greatly reduced. This was explained and broken down really well. Should be explained and incorporated like this in MSF school.
Love this. It's a nice feeling to know that I am a highly skilled rider. Even at only 4 years old on a motorcycle...I am the boss!! At 61.5 years old now, I am having a blast!!! Thank you for all you do. Thank you for all of your lessons.
I've been riding a super sport (CBR1000RR Zephyr) for decades, High and slow speeds, working the preload (friction zone) dragging the rear brake, dipping the bike and being the Boss of that bike. I just recently got myself a bagger (RGS Sleipnir) and I love it, I definitely feel the difference in weight and center of gravity at stops and slow speeds, and at slow speeds I feel like a new rider all over again lol. So back to slow basics and covering that rear brake while keeping it loaded. I most definitely want to be the Boss of this bike and gain the 3 C,s Robert, You have fantastic content, and it is very well put together and done., to bad I'm in So. Cal. Keep it up, and thank you for your service then and now. Paying it forward.

I agree. I just got a Harley and started watching these videos BEFORE I was even on the bike. His voice kept playing in my head and I really had confidence to ride the first time!!
Great explanation of this technique. Last year I bought a new tour bike, it's wieldy by my standards. I took a trip and I was pulling out of a fuel pump and went into a hard right to circle back around the pump. The bike started to go over my learned reaction was to let the clutch out and straighten the bike up. That is great practice technique also. Great video, Thank you. now I know how to explain this to someone else properly.

Ok people, I have been watching this tutelage for 2 years, I have practiced much of this training, the years and miles I have under my belt don't matter a tinkers damn. It's knowing Roberts information and consciously applying these techniques every chance you get. For me, If I go anywhere it is a minimum of 40 miles to be anywhere there are locations to supply fundamental needs. Yes it's a choice, but it's also perfect to run all of these training steps. Am I a t10? no, no, not even close, it depends on the day and circumstances. The last trip into the city for medical appointments started at 28 degrees Fahrenheit and never rose above 50 degrees. All of these riding considerations, with layers etc, change. You have to adapt the circumstances but the fundamentals never change. I find myself still struggling to improve my riding skills in some applications but it just worth continuing the program. Thank you LT, +200K on three two wheelers and still working to improve.
I finally FINALLY am able to do a U turn within 2 parking spots! Yeah me! I'll continue to practice that until I can do it 100% of the time. Then, I'll start building the procedure for turning from stopped and locked. Thank you for the help.

Very good instructional video. Regarding the trust and believe, One thing that is so obvious to you [and me] but not all beginners is that the only thing you do is give power; the handlebars sort themselves out so no specific input required.

Yo Rob, I always watch all of your videos. Regardless of if it’s a short or if it’s a long one I’m going to watch it. The reason why is because I have learned so much by watching your videos and when I’m out riding, I hear your voice in the back of my mind coaching me. I am committed to your technique. I practice your techniques in the parking lot weekly and I also practice them every time I throw my leg over the bike during my ride. Keep up the outstanding work, and may God bless you and yours. Merry Christmas Rob. I appreciate you bro!!!
@@alvincriswell1479 I know…right. Lol If anything seems to be going squirrely it’s like…”keep it loaded…keep it loaded” or “let out the clutch.” Even when you are watching other people, you hear him banging inside your head about “keeping it loaded”. that’s the name of the game with slow speed. As always … “preload and keep it loaded.” Lol Enjoy your riding and keep it safe my brother.
Thank you mate! Really. I am a new rider, never had a training except the riding course to get your license. I knew I needed power but when I try to provide the power with the clutch, at that tiny moment the bike wants to slow down even more causing you to fall or stall the engine (the worst). So I figured I needed throttle before the releasing the clutch however throttling takes time and it is already too late for the bike to recover (the foot is already on the ground at that point). "Keep it loaded" is the key here. Appreciate this!
ROBERT, to get Preladis that just idle or actually adding some throttle ( 1800 RPR) and holding it there and adjusting the POWER using the Cluth at the friction zone ( step 4) Great video!! Best video Thank you!

The confidence gained by understanding how to properly apply power to the rear wheel makes everything else involved with low speed maneuvers much easier. Excellent explanation and demonstration of a simple but often misunderstood concept.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you very much! 👍🏾

Thank you very much! Thanks again for participating in it. 👍🏾
That’s a great exercise, to feel the bike falling and then using the clutch, that feeling where to bike lifts itself up with clutch/throttle, that really feels like magic!
You nailed it , that's precisely how I injured my left ankle while practicing slow speed tight turns in the parking lot.
Hopefully you didn’t break it.

Sir,
I'm 64 years old and a new rider.

I most definitely want to be the Boss of this bike and gain the 3 C,s

Thank you very much! It’s my pleasure. 😊
I finally FINALLY am able to do a U turn within 2 parking spots! Yeah me! I'll continue to practice that until I can do it 100% of the time. Then, I'll start building the procedure for turning from stopped and locked. Thank you for the help.

Bro I followed you since you had like 5k subscribers and I’m so glad your still doing motorcycle videos and I’m happy for your success and that people have realized how much value you provide and you reached that 100k mark. I knew you were gonna blow up. Congratulations man and much love from Miami. I bought a honda shadow and your videos got my riding skills on point that I feel so confident making any turn. I still have to continue practicing but there’s nothing better than being the boss of your motorcycle. Thanks again.
