Pidgeon, you have said everything I have been trying to say. My 27 YO child is intersex and I have always been up front with her but unfortunately we were informed that we had to assign a sex in order to complete a birth certificate, go to school or get a drivers license. So I am very sad to say that we went through with the surgery as we were told there wasn't another choice. Even though they have known, the road has still been difficult for them, so they have suffered with social anxiety and depression. I have written papers about intersex and given to counselors, Drs, and anyone who will read it. So thank you for advocating!!

When I started teaching in NC in the 90's, I remember the school nurse telling me that there was a student at another school that was neither male nor female. This child's parents were going to let the child decide what they wanted to be-male or female. I never knew there was a "both". Thank you for sharing.

Dr's make mistakes all the time. Yes. I've been through it. Not in this context. Even as an adult, you can consent to treatment that is given with bad medical advice. Therefore, be careful.
She is right. There should be no sex assignment surgery done to children.
THE PUPPY IS SO CUTE
In Mathematics we have what we call THE PRODUCT OF TWO MATRIX MULTIPLICATION. When we apply this to engineering we find that there can be multiple products depending on how one operates the multiplication. It is interesting that when we compare this with the mating and reproduction of living items, the mating between two living entities is just like a Matrix Multiplication where nature shows that the result of mating or " Multiplication" can vary. In the living kingdom mating a horse with a mule or vice versa one gets a mule and there are worker bees and there are worker and soldier ants. In humans there are brothers and sisters who are different, and so are all the people on earth. NO ONE IS THE SAME and the outcome is just not the same there are so many variations. Yes we chose the ends as being male and female but this is no more than trying to make a mixture of two liquids and the ration decides the outcome.
Nature operates in this manner and perhaps it is these feature of Matrix Multiplication giving different products which resulted in evolution of different species.
Everything is NATURAL but what we start calling NORMAL needs to be defined and perhaps the features which will result in the reproductive system, "supporting sustainability" of the species is what may be, in the long run, called NORMAL One may look at evolution as a situation where the law of selection is being active. When they breed racehorses they do not breed any two horse and mare. This is nature's way, and it is, biological engineering, about which we do not know so much. It is wrong for doctors to pretend that they know it all and do cosmetic surgery for "social reasons" rather than knowing of a medical solution. There are many professions who deal in illusions unlike Engineers and Scientists who deal in facts, and repeated experiments, This mating of two matrixes resulting in a product with a variation in characteristic is purely ENGINEERING, with the difference that there are emotions and sentiments associated with it, so one cannot proceed to experiment blindly. Evolution took millions of years to produce humans with their diversity in body and mind shape,. The variations in the languages we use and the religions that were formed over a few thousands of years. Nature produces diversity but when it comes to human nature, one must move slowly, Conducting irreversible surgeries without knowing the exact result should be avoided for as long as one can, unless the situation is life threatening where and decaying fast one can do no more that TRY ONE'S BEST

Because making a lazy but significant decision like that is more than being ignorant about these types of situations. You don't just go ahead and REMOVE body parts and supplement hormones to 'fit a gender' more. That lies way beyond simply 'not knowing any better.'

Bcuz No matter what a doctor says, who knows if the doctor might be starting to go crazy!! There are a ton of really bad doctors out there! And whoever a baby is born to, parents have the responsibility and need to be protective, and advocate for whatever is really best for their child!!
You say these parents were just trying to protect Pidge. But were they more concerned with their own fear/shame/ignorance/confused feelings, their child’s future feelings, or their child’s actual physical health and safety? Which one? These parents did not educate themselves enough, didn’t tell the doctor NO they’re going to wait, and actually protect Pidge! Granted, 50 years ago most people accepted that “Dr knows best.“ But Pidge isn’t THAT old! And with such a major, life changing issue, don’t you think you should consult different Drs, & maybe consult with an organization made up of adult people who actually have the SAME CONDITION, to learn from them what life with this diagnosis is ACTUALLY Like?? I just don’t get being brainwashed enough to allow your child to have such traumatic genital surgeries, and lie to them!!
Don't blame the parents. People usually think that Dr's know best. They studied medicine the parents didn't. Blame the Dr's and medical field. Also how do you know they didn't want to make extra money on the surgeries? Everything in US is about that.
