- In this video, I look at the LulzBot Mini 2 3D printer to overview 10 things that I love and "hate" about this machine! Despite its age, this 3D printer is still one of my preferred printers on the market. No printer is perfect, and through this review I show the things I think it does the best, and things that I think could be improved, as well as suggestions to make it a bit better.
The Mini 2 is also my preferred 3D printer for travel and durability, which I explain in greater detail in this review:

I'm still using my Mini 1 which I bought in 2014; the cool thing is that print quality has actually improved over time because slicers have improved (and updated firmware has improved things a little too). I've completely abandoned the horrible Cura Lulzbot Edition and moved to a combination of PrusaSlicer and Octoprint which IMO is far, far better.
Only thing I really don't like about it is the hot-end-as-electrical-contact leveling which, yeah, is unreliable at a fundamental design level no matter how much you mod and tweak it .
Solid feedback, and me too! I still have my original mini 1, though modded with a new head, bed, and octoprint w/ a touch screen because this was before the GUI.
@@MrErdreich I've actually never done _any_ maintenance on mine aside from replacing the wiper pads and adding dampers to the steppers to quieten it down, oh and a new PEI sheet once. Have you ever done any lubrication on the lead screws etc? Feel like I should do that.
@@davidf2281 Not recommended. Lubricating the screws may just cause dust to collect and reduce performance more than assist. If they are binding, it might just need to be balanced rather than greased. And same! It’s been bullet proof, I replaced the head more from a want than a need
@@MrErdreich Good to know, thanks!
Do you have any tips for building Lulzbot Mini 1 profiles in Prusaslicer? I’ve tried many times but am experiencing terrible print quality. My machine is all stock except for a Aero hotend, running off Octoprint.
It's great to see that Lulzbots are still well regarded. I find it interesting how the newer Lulzbot printers are not as well regarded as the Mini2 which continues to win accolades for it's design and reliability and print quality. Yet the larger printers are not talked about much anymore. I wish that there was a Taz 7 that evolved the few shortcomings the Taz 6 had, rather than the workhorse and pro with their belt-driven Z-axis design.
Thanks for the comment, and agreed. The belt driven z has grown on me over the years, and I would say that the TAZ SideKick has finally taken the place of my TAZ6 as my all around favorite LulzBot, review coming soon :) But I agree that the Mini 2 really is just a master class of what a printer should do and after all these years, it’s still awesome. Thanks for the view!
You definitely have to make a review on that sidekick! Also, I just bought a secondhand Lulzbot Mini 2 and it was really dusty, what sort of steps do you take for maintaining it? Thanks for the video
Thanks for the view and feedback, stay tuned! I have a sidekick video coming soon, as well as a “calibration and maintenance” video which I think you would enjoy. In the meantime, check out some of the resources in this guide I made a little while back:

Do you know of any place that services the mini 2.
I do, if you're somewhere around NJ. But LulzBot does as well. You can ship your printer back to them and they will do a full rebuild and tuning in-house to make it like new, basically regardless of age or condition.
Do you have the file for the printed wipe mount?

I bought the Mini 2 but very disappointed in the unit. One of the linear rails was wobbly resulting in poor print quality. Also after about one week of printing (20 hours or so) the bed made awful grinding noises when moving back and forth. When I spoke with Lulzbot they asked for a video of the wobbly linear rail which provided. They did not offer to repair it and when I mentioned the grinding noises of the bed they stated that it is "self lubricating" so no type of lubrication allowed. Turns out the self lubricating is simply a type of self destructing plastic that slowly wears away proving the "lubrication". Fortunately I bought it from a vendor that has a 30 day no questions asked full refund returns policy which is what I did. Too bad because I really wanted to support an American company that assembles and even makes some of the parts in the U.S.
Thanks for sharing this experience! I have had a bearing go on me too, really an unfortunate design flaw. I’ll admit though, I’ve had more than 20 LulzBot’s in my Makerspaces with two bad linear bearings across all of them in 8 years. Still, a frustrating experience as a customer for sure.
