JoJo Siwa and the Anatomy of a (Failed) Rebrand

- JoJo Siwa spent years planning the release of her song "Karma", meant to mark her official "rebrand" into adulthood. Though because of a few key missteps, JoJo instead became a global laughing stock while accidentally launching the career of former musician Brit Smith. It turns out, JoJo can't escape from her past, and keeps making it worse in the present. From Colleen Ballinger, to recreating "Dance Moms", it's clear that JoJo Siwa's rebrand was doomed from the start.
This is a video essay analyzing JoJo Siwa's recent rebrand, started by the song "Karma".

You didn't even mention her biggest tell: The fact that she says "we" every time she talks about her career, art, or "rebrand." It's the ultimate proof that her entire life is still orchestrated by a marketing team and her psycho, control-freak dance mom.
I can't get over the fact that she's wearing her own face on her t-shirt in so many interviews...
@@RQRoxhave you seen her daily driver? She wrapped the entire car in a collage of her own face. It’s truly a sight to behold.
Yes!!! So true!
How do u know shes not doing a gollum impersonation?
You're crazy, she is literally bleeding ego this is definitely in large part due to herself
she acts like a caricature of what an 8-year old thinks an adult is
Real
I think that's it. It's "arrested development". Like how DMX got famous in 1998 and didn't learn to use the keyboard or the internet because he was too famous to do any of that shit so he was basically computer-illiterate until his death. There are numerous cases just like this - when you get world-famous you basically stop growing and developing because you're famous - 'you're already perfect'. It might very well be that Jojo Siwa got famous as a 11yo and is now, however-old-she-is, mentally still a 11yo. Money and fame are not good for our species.
THIS!
THIS explains it PERFECTLY 👌🏽 👍🏽
@@celer2010and it not being "authentic."
It being something she's doing to purposely show "hey, yeah, I'm a grown up! I know what adulting is! I'm bad just like all of you!"
Hahahaha that is a great burn
Serious question: was jojo siwa even popular enough for a rebrand? I genuinely forgot she existed until a few days ago
I don't know about popular, but definitely well-known enough in theory...
I unfortunately only still was keeping up with her cause she defended colleen ballinger
she's still popular with younger people. She's also one of the young californian influencers that didn't go partying during covid so she had that going for her
I think she’s the youngest person to sell out the o2 arena, so yes
With children and gay children under 10, I'd assume she was
She has been a child for so long that she never went through an “awkward middle school” phase, this IS her awkward stage, she is growing. This was definitely her trying to get respect from the people around her. Also, this was probably pushed from her mom and producers to get more money and to cover up the XOMG scandal. She was not ready to handle children when she still had a trauma to work through.
It's sad that her mom never let her grow because that would hurt the kid brand that payed for everything they owned, it's like she has a list for every stage of her daughter's life and is just listing off
It's weird cus even at 11 she was dressing and behaving like an 8 year old
Exactly this. I feel more bad that shes a media tool than a person
Glad to see this, people are way too hard on her....
Well said. I wrote the exact same thing on another channel the other day.
The fact she said she lost her voice several times while recording a SINGLE SONG will never have her surviving more than one album of singing before she sounds even more like a 75 year old chain smoker. 🙃
Is that her real voice? The way she's constantly engaging in vocal fry makes me think she's forcing her voice lower.
@@kitwillihnganz5972 she doesn't know how to sing properly so as the comment above said it's most likely a mix of vocal damage from poor singing technique and her trying to force a deeper voice to sound more mature (or like miley cyrus tbh)
I've been singing for a couple years and yeah at the start it is difficult to get through a single song without burning out your voice
You gotta train up the vocal cords over time
@randomchannel323 True, vocal cord is a muscle. It needs to be trained slow and steady over a long time and with a proper technique. Constantly doing vocal fry and screaming when talking isn't the right way lol
IMO Jojo is a person who never developed an authentic personality due to her environment, a fact she doesn’t see as odd or sad. She thinks everyone is as artificial as she is, and thus can only see peoples growing up as a rebrand/aesthetic change.
Shhh be quiet, you’re making too much sense!
Her whole life she has been a brand, so it makes sense. Props to her parents for pimping her out as a money-making product.
couldn't have said it better myself tbh.
Yea it's kinda funny - her previous success comes from her ability to weather WITHERING criticism, and push through while dancing well. Part of that comes from her massive ego, that was her best defense. But she's painfully average in most categories that usually make-or-break a celebrity - like looks, charisma, and intelligence, and so she's doomed to fail even if she wasn't also so good at pissing everyone off. I can't imagine that she stays popular outside of the time it takes people to get bored of watching her meltdown publicly
I think she may even be on the spectrum. I feel bad that everyone is just thirsty for her blood.
I think all the ponytails restricted blood flow to her brain so she became THAT
Hopefully we can get a Style Theory on this because I'm convinced
the pony tails and her mom bleaching her hair since she was like 2
Getting exploited by her own mother ever since she was a toddler and never understanding that what she went through was neither normal nor okay made her like this, someone covering for their crimes by drowning out the news via cringe.
That and the bleach in her hair since she was like 2 or 3
33:23 exhibit A. She's got a wicked receding hairline almost to the top crown of her head with a feint blonde widows peak from pulling her hair up so tight for that ponytail/hairstyle for almost 2 decades. It looks like she's adopted the "I'm bald under this baseball cap" style recently which makes sense and for music videos/concert appearances or meet and greets, she probably has some kind of piece sewn in so it doesn't stand out.
She needs to step away from the camera and live a normal life. She has been controlled by so many people from dance moms to the present day. It's such a toxic environment and it clearly shows.
100%
All she has is the camera. She can not have a normal life.
Don't you see that she can't quit? She once said in an interview that her family expect her to pay for everything and hinted that she's a little annoyed by that. Her mom have made her work ever since she's a toddler and she probably thinks that is a normal child's life. That's why she acts so goofy on stage she probably don't even have time to grow up and play like every other teenager
Her thinking that she's special because she went from child star to edgy musician is insane because almost every child star who was on Disney or Nick has done that exact thing.
Omg yea. What shes doing is basically the equivalent to happy jid to edgy emo era we all been through. Shes thinking is special just scream out of touch
I kept on screaming at the screen saying "Miley Cyrus"
@last-chance_ can you imagine her bragging about how her OF is revolutionary?

Her saying she "invented" gay pop is really truly the most disrespectful thing. She claims that she takes inspiration from artists like Lady Gaga, Freddie Mercury, Elton John and other famously queer artists but doesn't understand that they already made gay pop. Gay pop isn't a genre it's a collection of artists and songs
What do you want to bet she's never even heard "The Weakness in Me"?
Also, her saying "It's like kpop but it's gay pop"
.. like wat?

She was forced to hold that silly, bubbly, childish persona for so long that it delayed her cringe phase up until adulthood. She was supposed to be having those thoughts and edgy behaviors at 13 or whatever, but now is the only time she has the freedom to do it, since she kiiinda has some independence now. It's a shame, but she perpetuates the stuff she was hurt by, and theres no excuse for this.
Honestly, I would've thought the whole cringefest could've been endearing if it wasn't for her defending Colleen and the ill treatment of the XOMG girls. Like if wasn't for all that, plus the ego, I would've been fine if she was a sweet person trying something out.
but it's not even edgy. It's just... idk what the fuck it is, faux edgy would be the best way to describe it

She’s ruined her voice with the screaming and her aesthetic screams “look for me at the next Wrestlemania”
We’ll sell you the whole seat but you’ll only need the edge!
I mean she wouldn't look out of place at AEW
@DieterDuplak314 she’s pansexual, not a lesbian?
It’s KISS. The aesthetic she’s going for is a disco version of the band KISS. KISS already made a disco album!
KISS also had a stint in wrestling in the late 90s now that I think about it.
It is HPV
“You’re the age that judges me” honey nobody that age (29+) knows who you are
Right? Had literally never heard of here until I started seeing her kiss outfit everywhere
Thank you!!!!
This whole thing just feels like her saying, "I am the first girl to become an adult, can you believe it guys? NO ONE has ever done that before."
Underrated comment XD
And of all the people she could have emulated, why Gene Simmons?
No one else would do? She couldn't have hired some creative makeup artist to give her an original look?
It's bizarre.
I still can’t believe she didn’t know who Gene Simmons was, her rebrand debut look was based on KISS and she didn’t know who the bassist, co-lead singer and co-founder is??? And then she goes and says she wants to start a new genre of music called “gay pop” as if Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Janelle Monáe and so many other amazing queer artists aren’t singing pop songs about their experiences as queer people in the entertainment industry. She just seems so out of touch with not only the real world but the entertainment world as well.
Freddie Mercury, Elton John
Why doesn't anyone mention George Michael?
Right, surprised about George Michael not being mentiond or Boy George?
That's the biggest thing with her rebrand, ig. With rebel era, people have expectations of the artist taking control of the narrative around them, being independent, etc etc. But with Jojo, it feels like she's taking on the aesthetics, but she doesn't know where her people got the pictures for the imageboard from.
if shes going to base her look of the band kiss she should at least do some research and do some history research of kiss and how they became popular or about the makeup history and how its part of their identity etc. and how she could incorporate similar but i feel like she is just doing the whole rebranding thing for views and i feel it is just fake to me
i guarantee you if you ask anyone who was a kiss fan about who was the bassist of the band kiss they will all tell you its gene simmons and the co lead singer being paul stanley

Hey, huge shout-out to the Charismatic Voice there! However, I will throw out there that Maynard James Keenan at least claimed to have lost his voice while recording the scream. (Maybe Jojo Siwa was just borrowing that classic Tool story, sort of like she did with the Tool-wrench.) I highly doubt anyone would confuse her flat recording of "Karma," however, with one of the greatest metal screams in history.

A person who was associated with Shane Dawson ending up doing something questionable seems to be a pattern.
I remember years ago, people were saying stuff like "We should look into every single person who's been associated with Shane Dawson in the early days of RUclips"
Cos a few too many of them turned out to be groomers
As they say... Birds of a feather flock together
That seems a bit harsh. Garrett Watts seems like a genuine kind soul. I've never really gotten a good vibe from Shane, Ryland (or his sister Morgan), or many of his featured pals--such as Jeffree, James Charles, and other various white people. Garrett was the only shining beacon of Shane's career, and he didn't even stick around for long. Garrett is the one who made me realize Shane was a total shithead, especially in that old video where Shane set up a surprise blind date for Garrett and then ruined their date. That's when I stopped watching Shane and started reflecting on his career. Garrett was too nice and too trusting, of course he'd end up being friends with a manipulator. It happens to me all the time... and trust me, we don't entirely realize we're in that kind of situation until we get out of it.
Not everyone who was ever associated with Shane Dawson is also a horrible person. People who have gone through traumatic situations typically tend to get manipulated easily. I'm not going to blame Garrett and his friend Andrew for trying to see the good in someone awful. But I do blame Shane for manipulating people into being his friend. And I blame the people who support him, too.
Me and my friends literally joke that "associated with Shane Dawson back in the day" is a litmus test.

I can only hope she can actually turn her life around at some point, because all her dramas have been either emulating what she's been told, so like in what she says in defended Coleen or literally reliving her trauma through a new generation of pop stars with XOMG, or it's been other things like being a shit person in a relationship. As in, she is not ready to have connections like that and it shows. I can safely say that last bit is what ultimately got me to get my ass in order (not in a relationship, but with a crush, so, not that far off either).

Ja. My first thought was "who is her vocal coach and why aren't they fired?" She is also aiming too high a range I think. She's got a lower voice, let her settle into that range and get comfortable singing there, then gradually expand that range. Don't have her belting out "high notes" it doesn't work for her voice and could cause her to strain and get vocal damage.
Let's hope so

My most generous interpretation is that she is so incredibly sheltered and affluent that she is continuously having to learn the context of things after she says them and either her, her mom, or team aim to “play it off” to save face.
I think you’re absolutely correct.
Her mom have literally brainwashed her since she's a toddler that she need work, that she's a star probably conditioned her to not quit because how else will her family get money? It's very cruel that she grew up like this
Yep.
Somebody called JoJo Siwa the third Paul brother and honestly it makes sense.
The only difference is I feel that the Paul brothers are (shockingly) more aware. They at least seem to know that they’re assholes and that that’s their persona. Jojo clearly lacks self awareness.

Totally agree. It’s like those kids that grew up with parents doing anything to please them that then turn out to be utterly incompetent in any social settings with peers their ages because they never learned real life doesn’t go their way all the time.
She... wasn't really sheltered? She dealt with a lot of abuse and continued the cycle. She's acting out of all the trauma she has been through. And yeah, clearly there are many things she doesn't know, but that's how she grew up. She wasn't "sheltered," she was neglected of any love and real care.
I wouldn’t even count it as a rebrand. she still feels exactly the same, she’s just enabled the black and white filter on her camera
Kate Bush--wrote Wuthering Heights in a few hours at age 18 and recorded the vocals in one take. Wrote Man With the Child in His Eyes at age 13. Had her own sound from the start. That's a generational talent.

@@ZimVader-0017 Checking the music in that channel's Playlists section, I don't see how someone with that taste would produce the kind of music JoJo does voluntarily.
I feel like Jojo was manipulated her whole life, especially from Abby and her parents. This is what happens when you use children as a product and not as a person. I feel like she needs therapy and more love.
I think the biggest issue is that instead of just transitioning her music and saying "hey I'm going to be releasing music that isn't family friendly" and lied about writing Karma's a B!tch it wouldn't be so bad. Her rebrand also is just her changing some makeup. She's still doing and making content as if she's trying to reach out to her kid audience. (Also she keeps bad company so that doesn't help too.)
100% on the nose
I've been saying that her bad girl image is like a child's perspective on what being a badass looks like. Her costume and her corny crass attitude is like right out of Phineas and Ferb.
@@flatpepsito me it's a mix of what a child thinks and what plain middle class parents think their teenager will get into if they start "acting out".
She’s undeservedly arrogant but she never claimed to write it. She talked about the song being presented to her.
what people miss is that her gay pop creation is putting on that makeup (I mean that's what she means, not style of music or something since obv. there's nothing new about that even for her).
as if that wasn't a staple of pop already.
I keep hearing Jojo say things like "I didn't want to curse" and "these lyrics didn't make sense for me" and "I don't get these cultural references in my own work" which just tells me at 20 she's not in much control over her content at all. Even in interviews, it's not uncommon to get the list of questions asked before you go on stage. Her PR team has brainwashed this kid... When you think about the fact she's been in the bizz before puberty hit it's not a surprise.
Personally, I think Jojo had a better grip on her identity at 11 than she does at 20. She's acting now like how most middle schoolers do. Even the arrogance comes off as inauthentic to me, like someone's told her "this is the stuff you're supposed to say" and "this is the body language you should have, now put these chains on and don't forget to post that break up video we talked about this morning".
Given how she's defending the abuse done to her on Dance Moms, I think that adds to this case. She's still being abused, but she's been told she's an adult and manipulated into thinking these are all her own choices. We sympathize with it more for kids because they don't have maturity or experience, but Jojo isn't like most people. She's been both overly sheltered and not protected enough, so her situation is very unfamiliar to the general public. Which is why a lot of people are just angry with her. Im not saying she deserves a pass. I'm just putting it in context.
Honestly, I think the best thing she could do for herself is step out of the spotlight and do something else in the industry that doesn't involve influencer/performer spaces- be a coach or choreographer, spend time experimenting, etc. That or she needs to fire this current team she's got right now and hire entirely new people. It'd be nice if some of her elders have mercy on her and help her get in touch with a team that manages her brand better.
Either way, Jojo would benefit from counseling if she's not in it already.
She seems lost and it's like she knows she's fake and she's hoping "fake it till you make it" will work for her, but it's clearly making her miserable.
I hope she'll get some folks who have her best interests at heart come alongside her and I hope she'll be receptive to it. TBH I don't think it's overcoming pride and being humble that'll be her journey. I think she's gotta realize she's been abused and manipulated and navigate how to take personal accountability and grow without becoming woefully ashamed and burnout from embarrassment.
The internet is rarely forgiving, but if she's got some solid people in her life then she'll be okay someday.

Well said!!
this one of the more compassionate comments on any video talking about Jojo, and I agree. different people deal with abuse and trauma differently and that is especially true of Jojo because she's not in the position most people would be in. while that doesn't excuse any of her actions, it at least puts them into perspective, and considering that she's spent pretty much her whole life at this point in the industry, I think she would really benefit from just taking a break, or leaving the industry entirely. she needs to take time to just live like a person and actually find herself instead of constantly being told what to do and being gaslit into thinking that "this is what she wants".
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if years later, she suddenly comes out to talk about how the industry affected her growth and mentality. we've already heard similar stories from people who were once child stars like her.
I read somewhere that she is her own PR team..? Not sure how that works, but whatever team she does have, they just feed her ego. And her mom will never let have that realization/break. I'm pretty sure the channel Dance Moms Uncovered made a video about Jojo and her mom. It's a pretty sad and toxic relationship.
Edit to add: I think the title of the video I'm referencing is The Cycle of Child Exploitation/Jojo needs to stop exploiting the xOmp kids.
There's another video from three years ago titled: was jessalyn Susan fame hungry?
It's definitely a good time to consider rewatching these videos with everything that has transpired since then in mind.
While I agree that Jojo's case is very unique, I do not think she should be in the industry at all; considering how she and her mother have treated the kids group they're raising. Jojo grew up in a horrible environment and she will need years of therapy to grasp that, but she does not deserve any kind of platform right now, until she can get her shit together

@@Sunday_is_socool Seconding this. It sucks to see people focus so much on the rebrand as opposed to, y’know, incredibly serious allegations of abuse, one of which involves that of a disabled person. and as bizarre as it was, miley cyrus did it better. like at least she went all the way. she really was that bad girl that jojo pretends to be.
@@KossolaxtheForesworn Personally I feel like the intent is also completely different. Miley underwent that drastic change to bold, controversial music and fashion because she was sick and tired of Disney and the expectations that come with being a (former) Disney child star. Jojo was never in that position, her rebrand is purely because she wants the attention. Which isn't inherently a bad thing! But it makes it feel a lot less authentic.
Even in her generation, Melanie Martinez is right there.
@@KossolaxtheForesworn I still personally think it was try hard at the time, but I know Miley's rebrand was definitely more gradual then Jojo's. Her image slowly became more mature and sexy before she finally came right out with that.

Why is it whenever people who wasn't allow to be normal kids get older they end up doing things or being like this
My theory/understanding:
We are born entirely dependent on our caregivers. As 'full' adults, we are expected to be (more-or-less) fully -in-dependant.
Good parenting, then, involves working to imbue the child with the skills, knowledges and wisdom required to navigate the world as an independent adult.
(And I don't just mean stuff like 'how to pay your taxes'. Stuff like 'Knowing I will need to go to bed by this time to be awake for this thing tomorrow'.)
Children being children and doing all the stupid shit that entails is an important part of this process, for reasons that I hope are obvious because I can't articulate them right now.
But someone who's not been allowed to 'be a kid'? Who's been managed and directed their entire childhood and adolescence? They've been kept dependent; woefully unequipped to function as an independent adult.
So when they're let off the metaphorical leash, or course they go buck wild- they have no experience of what the 'normal' is!
@diestormlie To add to your point about development, I follow a podcast where the hosts talk about celebrity memoirs. One theme is that whenever the celebrity was either a child star or "had to grow up fast" and they missed key parts of their development, they become a bit of a mess as adults, especially young adults.
The hosts concluded that even the most mundane activities are important to development in ways people don't understand. Things like having a crush, going to prom, going to school, having friends, having your parents there to support you when you mess up, and rebelling. Things people don't even think about.
These mundane things are so important that what was noted in the memoirs is that the celebrity almost had to go through these experiences in a way to have a normal life in middle age. Except they had to go through this as adults, at a time when most of their peers have matured past this and the celebrity just comes across as crazy.
Because it's quite literally *the* tale as old as time, and for whatever reason, people persistently choose to forget it and have to relearn the same lesson over and over and over again.
@@torijones5194 To also add onto YOUR point, one thing I hate the most about cancel culture is this stupid idea that everyone has to be perfect all the time no matter what stage they are in their development.
"Oh well when I was 18 I wasn't problematic!" becomes "Well when I was 17..." "Well when I was 16..." "Well when I was 15..." and so on. Thing is, nobody is truly an adult until they hit 30. Even then, people still grow and change.
So when you take child stars who have their entire lives broadcasted for the world to see, that kind of pressure to perform at all times is already incredibly hard on their brain development. Toss in social media addicts who think being straight is homophobic, and you've got yourself a whirlwind of self-doubt-turned-rebellion... and never in a good way.
Children need to f*ck up in order to develop properly. Like children literally struggle to learn if they do not get proper stimulation in their brain, and some of that stimulation comes from.. well, guilt! Making amends! Empathy! Apology! If a child is never allowed to make a mistake, then they live the rest of their lives believing they can do nothing wrong, or that they do EVERYTHING wrong so they may as well fulfill that prophecy... it's a nightmare and I really feel sorry for those kids.
Some child stars, thank god, managed to turn out alright. I don't know what it was about the set of Suite Life + On Deck, but somehow most of the child stars turned out pretty well! (We don't talk about Cole Sprouse though)
Part of this could be due to the fact that the directors were less shitty towards the kids, but it could also be due to the fact that social media was all but a whisper of some tech nerd's wild ideas. The kids were allowed to grow up and become their own people. Kids now don't get that luxury.
Hell, even looking at Noah Schnapp, who came under fire for saying some iffy things recently.. what on Earth am I gonna take some kid's words so seriously for? He is obviously too young to truly understand the gravity of certain problems--and that's fine! Young people are just like that! Young people are stupid and that is OKAY. Because plenty of adults can be stupid too! But the way we get BETTER is by LETTING PEOPLE F*CKING GROW AND CHANGE.
I'm really sick of today's internet culture trying to ruin future generations by pretending like humans need to be perfect. We are not perfect and we never will be, especially not if we're constantly at each other's throats.
Let kids be stupid while they have the chance, or else we end up with stupid adults instead!
@@diestormlie i think it's less that they have no experience of what normal is, and rather that they had no space to mess up and experiment, come on, she was a brand since she was a baby. It doesn't excuse her mistreatment of the crew and the like, but trying stuff out and making mistakes without it being broadcasted or the end of the world or her career, making those mistakes earlier in her life, probably as a teen, would have avoided all this.
Everyone is way more cringey and ignorant and tryhardy and all of those things at different points in time. Usually the peak is as teenagers, but it doesn't surprise me that for child stars that process gets condensed once they hit 18 basically, instead of it being a smoother transtition from, let's say 12 to 25, it's more like, i'm a preschooler one day, and i'm 21 and drinking and exploring my body the next day once i have some ioda of space.

Absolutely nothing about Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” sounds gay. Nothing. That song just flew right over your head. How? 🤦🏻♀️
@@iamcasihart People interpret it as gay because of how Jolene is described as attractive. Also because of covers made by LGBT people (Most popular being Nas) making it more about grief/insecurity about losing your partner to someone of the opposite gender. I really think her mom, or some other adult on her team, styled her rebrand. It's been said before that her whole "Bad girl" rebrand looks exactly like what a 40 year old PTA mom would consider rebellious. Jojo really set herself up by forgetting to do anything....bad. This makes it really easy for people to start looking into what exactly Jojo did to be a "Bad girl", and instead of finding planned controversy, they just find all of the actually terrible things she's done to children and with her relationships. So yeah, she *has* been a bad girl, by allegedly abusing her dance crew. Not by doing anything that's fun or artistically rebellious.
How would you know what a 40 year old pta mom would consider rebellious?! What are you ageist or something smh
I was just thinking this, her rebrand is very carefully constructed by someone other than Jojo, by someone who thinks this is edgy but is 30 years behind the curve of what is actually considered edgy.
honestly i think the only way Jojo could really do a rebrand is to make herself seem like less of a “brand”, everything she does is still so planned and corporate that it doesn’t feel different. true authenticity is the only way she could really seem different from her past self

I mean she didnt steal it though? her label bought the song for her. What was wrong was her parading it around and presenting it as this special personal song she worked on or which was made for her when it simply wasn't and as-is is exactly the same as how it was when bought. Framing her and her team considering making changes and then not as the authentic writing process of the song and its meaning to her. Very disingenuous and doesn't make her big debut song seem interesting or special, but at least it wasn't stolen.
The songs not stolen. It’s normal for songs to be written and sold to different artists.
She didn't steal it, she was licensed to sing it. That's how the music business works. You think Rhianna writes her own music? Lol
Not vouching, but she didnt steal it. She bought it. This is a producer label issue. Not a JoJo issue
Jojos treatment of children is not a surprise when that’s exactly how she was brought up for her entire life, just seems normal for someone who has NEVER lived a normal life and was treated the same way for her entire childhood. What she needs is a therapist to deconstruct her childhood. Few child stars start their career at her age turn out normal when they’re adults. She has never been told no and has never failed
People (and Jojo) keep bringing up Miley Cyrus in comparison. Many dismiss it because they feel Cyrus was genuinely going through a bad girl phase, not just for show. But I think, more importantly, Cyrus also has the chops to actually sing. Oooooh, how scandalous! She's swinging naked on a wrecking ball?? Sure. But, also, DAMN that's one belter of a song! Jojo is a dancer. As a kids' singer, her vocals didn't have to be great. But if you're going for "maturity" then the audience expects you vocals to have matured as well. The fact that we have the Brit version for a one-on-one comparison only highlights where Jojo is lacking.
Same with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera's rebrands with more mature looks, and songs. Both had absolute bangers doing this. All three were great performers and had reasonable to great singing skills. Three, including Miley Cyrus.
24:52 “that song hits the lowest in my range and the highest in my range” then you don’t have a range because it doesn’t even fully span one single standard range as in it doesn’t fully span an entire alto, mezzo, or soprano range.

But, I lose any and all sympathy when she goes and repeats that cycle for other little girls, defends known creeps such as Colleen, and James Charles, and thinks she is next David Bowie. It’s clear she’s going through go her “rebellious teen era” in her 20s, because she couldn’t when she was actually a teen. She really needs some kind of help. The “child star” effect. Her parents made her their money machine and gave her everything she wanted when she was young, now she thinks she can do no wrong. Lots of child stars can snap out of it, but I think it really depends on the parents.
