Excellent info from Dr. Rhonda Patrick. A bit leery on the Omega-3 offsetting mercury poisoning though. Personally, I'm a ovo-pescatarian that is mainly plant based. I eat fish 2-3 times per week and eggs when I go out for breakfast. Not a big fan of supplements, though I do take a D3 and on occasion magnesium and B multivitamin. Having said that, it seems that a lot of people should consume an Omega-3 if deficient (as pointed out).
@@rossstevens6165 I wouldn't suggest that. I eat them a couple of times a week and minimize omega-6 intake the rest of the week. If you're worried about mercury, spend some time in the sauna and consider supplementing chlorella. 💚
I think historically that when the British French American ships rolled the seven seas these adventurers ate lots of seafood and also opened their eyes to the world creating genius people like Charles Darwin, to Trains Plains and Automobiles electricity grids and computers, that era for the west is now over. China owns most of Australian waters fishing licences while Aussies still get fluoride and other industrial waste nuerotoxins in tap water and forced tainted mrna products while seafood prices locally go through the roof.
Rhonda, what are your thoughts on people like ray peat who claim that polyunsaturated fats cause more harm than good? Would love it if you looked into it. Thank you
Chris masterjohn had an article about this called how essential are the essential fatty acids I believe. His conclusion was that if you have good levels of all the vitamins and minerals that they basically appear to not be essential, or even if they are it’s nearly impossible not to get the amounts required through a varied omnivorous diet. Everyone is so afraid of seed oils because they promote inflammation, and they certainly can, but omega 3’a are even more unstable and prone to oxidation than omega 6’s. Most animals have a more saturated fatty acid profile in their body fat. The reason fish like salmon, trout, sardines etc don’t is because they live in cold water. All the studies on omega 3’s show a mixed bag of results but no improvement in lifespan, and most oils are already oxidized before you ingest them and even if they somehow aren’t they oxidize inside your 98 degree body.
If people were being genuine, they would note that pretty much every meaningful result regarding n-3s is observational. Also, they ignore the observation that there is an interspecies inverse correlation between general DHA and lifespan. *One* study with a monoacylglyceride shows a 14% increase in lifespan in *drosophila*--funded by the patent owner. Evidence is mixed, but Peat emphasizes that n-3 (pufa overall) are inherently sensitive to damage and antagonistic to respiration, which is undeniably true.
I've read research that seems to indicate that optimizing your b vitamin intake helps conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. So if someone's not getting optimal amounts of folate, b6, b12 etc it tends to inhibit maximal conversion. Nonetheless, ALA has it's benefits which are unique to ALA, though DHA from fish is your best bet for optimal health.
I support your inference that omega-3 acids are very important. However, there is a need for a clearer presentation of what we know so far. Not all formulations of omega-3 have shown to be equally effective. Please look at the JELIS trial in Japan and REDUCE-IT trials that focused on icosapent ethyl (EPA); also how at higher concentrations of EPA (> 2g/day) there is a risk of AFib and bleeding. There is a huge amount of recent activity on EPA within the cardiovascular community and definitely needs to be included in any balanced presentation on omega-3s.
I would be very curious to see a podcast episode specifically on inflammation in the body. I say this because, while I am aware of the literature linking chronic inflammation with reduced lifespan, inflammation also plays a role in processes like muscle hypertrophy, which is shown to positively correlate to lifespan. Is it the chronic nature of inflammation that makes it reduce lifespan? And if so, would it be reasonable to assume that chronic resistance training without enough recovery would actually be detrimental to lifespan via inflammation effects? I'd love to hear a more in-depth discussion on this.
Just brilliant! In a nutshell, evidence based scientific research that can change our lives, longevity and well-being. And great debunking of the fear mongering associated with eating fish, seafood and mercury content. Such critically important information and has been shared with family, friends everywhere. Many thanks Rhonda!
Is it true that fish oil (say cod liver oil) may aggravate or cause a mild form of afib? If true than why and how does this sometimes occur with supplementation??
I wish you would go in depth on the sourcing and supplement quality. The lab grade product used in these studies is not the same as 99.99% of what's sold on the market with all the environmental pollutants and contaminants. Would also be interesting to see you cover algae oil, which would be a direct source of omega-3. Fish do not produce omega-3 so why not discuss marine plants?
@@artspark7697 I read they were having issues with arsenic, but not sure what supplements that applies to nor can I confirm the validity of that claim.
Before watching her videos on omega 3, I stocked up on liquid fish oil to save money. Now I'm concerned about oxidation. I've been making a smoothie with liquid fish oil and sunflower lecithin to emulsify the oil (and add other things; lion's mane, moringa, black seed oil, etc.), in an almond milk base, and mix in a Nutra Ninja high speed blender. Is all that air (oxygen) oxidizing everything?
I love smoked wild caught salmon with my eggs for breakfast. However, I heard that counted as "processed meat" and was bad for you just like processed deli meats are and you should avoid it. Any thoughts on that?
I don’t eat seafood, not even Wisconsin Cod (I’m from Wisconsin) and so this is why I take a top shelf omega 3 and Omega 6 blend of fish oil because it does help my digestive tract and brain function.
Dr. Patrick, do you regard it as generally safe for a person, in overall general good health, to consume wild caught salmon or sardines on a daily basis?

Thank you for clearing a very complicated deficiency issue. “Nothing to do with plant based or marine omegas. Everything to do with our own genetic expressions.” How would “icosapent ethy” interact with the genetic mutations that doesn’t take advantage of the omegas?
Nordic Natural ProOmega 2000 has 2150mg total omega3 (1125mgEPA, 875DHA) in a serving (2 pills). So is it reccomended we take two servings a day (4 pills)?
How do you feel about the potential mercury, nano-plastics and other pollutants found in fish as well as potential parasites in certain types of fish vs the benefits of Omegas in terms of fish sources of omega vs supplements ?
Surprisingly, many a times labs inducate that those of us who have been megadosing on omega3s in isolation have develiped low levels of omega6 which is also a problem ! Few facts : 1. Your body needs an optimal Balance between omega 3 and omega 6, and NOT very low omega 6. 2. Your body needs Full spectrum omegas and not just omega 3. Full spectrum omega complex will have omegas 3-5-6-7-9-11 !
The trans fats are still in the processed foods. All they did was adjust the serving size so that the amount falls below a serving which allows food manufacturers to keep putting the trans fats in, just like before.

Very persuasive and informative video for those who practice ¨How Not to Age¨. I wonder if there is such a thing as eating too much Salmon, like for lunch and dinner, daily. Could that raise your total and LDL cholesterol levels. And isn´t cholesterol responsible for heart attacks and strokes, the leading cause of death. From my limited reading, a total cholesterol level of 150 is better than 200 in maintaining unobstructed arteries . So, is eating fish daily a wise practice.? At home, I eat a vegetarian diet, but while I was on a cruise, I ate salmon as stated above, for 74 days and my cholesterol level increased drastically. Is there something like ¨too much of a good thing¨
I'm more inclined to follow Chris Masterjohn regarding fish oil and the balance of AA/DHA. He says EPA is not even required and should be limited as much as possible. DHA and AA resolve inflammation nutritionally whereas EPA acts pharmacologically like a NSAID to inhibit AA metabolism which likely results in many side effects. He says the best and safest approach is to eat liver and/or egg yolks with a small amount of CLO for the DHA, Vitamin A and D.
What if someway the pathways for all these vitamins and minerals are blocked they can’t absorb they do. You know good receptor sites are blocked by all kinds of chemicals added to foods and then people over eat their style malnourished
ALGAE is the SUPERIOR way of getting omega 3 ! :) Fish and so on are "middle men". Works too, for meat/fish eaters, but it's one step away from the pure source, algae
How do we know or what do we do to get our body to actually use vitamin D that we supplement with what are the precursors? How is it absorbed? Are you healthy enough to absorb vitamin D?

Can you explain why here in Quebec the nutritionist community is telling us that a new study showed and recommends to stop consuming omega-3 supplements?
I am concerned that by saying we need to eat more seafood, the availability of algal-derived DHA/EPA will be overlooked by many, and ecological damage will be multiplied.
Haven't watch the video yet. Want to ask this question before I forget. I can't take fish oil anymore because I have a brain cavernoma that starter bleeding and I can't take anything that thins the blood. What's a good supplement to take to increase omega 3s that won't thin the blood
dont we just always need to supplement? cause fish is high in omega 3 but also still has 1to1 ratio to omega 6 right? and since we get so much omega 6 from our diet, if we were to eat fish for omega 3 we still be to much in omega 6, so therefore a supplement with just only omega 3 is always needed?
Is this a newer study than the dart study? Is there a good explanation for the results of dart 2 study that showed an increase in mortality with fish oil supplementation

Watch your mercury levels
So, am I correct to believe.. if a woman is post- menopausal- and has low to No estrogen.. it is a good idea to supplement a plant based diet with an Omega 3 supplement? Or choose to eat small fatty fish 3x week? Any concerns about link of these Omega 3 supplements to cancer metastasis? (As I heard about a prostate study that linked this)
hi Dr. Patrick, there are some updates on Consumerlab, regarding fish oil supplementation, stating that healthy people (no cardiovascular disease) who supplement fish oil might be at a higher risk (13%) of developing atrial fibrillation and stroke (5%). Any thoughts on that?
Just read it myself, would love to here Rhonda's thoughts on it aswell 🙏

Thank you for this excellent video, Rhonda.
I have systemic vasculitis. I got the idea of a can of sardines every day from you. Not sure if you explained this but it takes a few weeks for the omega-3's to saturate your cells, just in case people were expecting something immediate. Besides omega-3, my stack includes fisetin, magnesium l-threonate, vit D3 and I'll usually rotate some others in there, such as alpha lipoic acid. As the first responder, I can usually keep this beast at bay, at least until I get the doctors involved.
The best way to get nutrition. nutrition ivs and nutrition injections myers cocktail iv, nad+iv, vitamin d injection, gluadathione iv and coq10 injection. way better then supplements. they been aroundd since the 1950s and thats what pro athletes and rich people use year round to stay healthy. only take a good liquid fish oil.
Curious, do you take your magenesium threonate at night or morning?
I take it at suppertime, only because my disease and/or treatments have given me a sleep disorder, that can cause vivid dreams, if I take Mg at bedtime. @@NoCoArts
The active ingredient in rat poison D-Con is so-called Vitamin D3. Yes you are eating rat poison when you supplement your diet with it.

In case they don't answer, it's better to take it an hour or more before bed.
I have always taken fish oil, but I am warming up to algae oil. As a more sustainable option. Just wish it was cheaper.
May I ask how much does it cost for 1 full gram of EPA/DHA?
Excellent info from Dr. Rhonda Patrick. A bit leery on the Omega-3 offsetting mercury poisoning though.
Personally, I'm a ovo-pescatarian that is mainly plant based. I eat fish 2-3 times per week and eggs when I go out for breakfast. Not a big fan of supplements, though I do take a D3 and on occasion magnesium and B multivitamin. Having said that, it seems that a lot of people should consume an Omega-3 if deficient (as pointed out).
If you take D3, you should consider pairing it with K2. Make sure your B complex doesn't contain folic acid. Opt for folate instead. 😉

@@Engrave.Danger Thanks, I guess I just need to stop eating.
@@rossstevens6165 I wouldn't suggest that. I eat them a couple of times a week and minimize omega-6 intake the rest of the week. If you're worried about mercury, spend some time in the sauna and consider supplementing chlorella. 💚

Thanks for the video! How much salmon should someone eat every day to get their Omega 3's up to 8% as you mentioned in the video?
Ever since your supp video, I’ve been swallowing magnesium, omega 3 and vitamin D.I feel 10x better now.

Thank you
Not all polyunsaturated fats are created equal. Check out “The big fat surprise” to gain a better understanding of the fat world.
I second this
Chris masterjohn had an article about this called how essential are the essential fatty acids I believe.
Does Krill oil satisfy this need?
I've read research that seems to indicate that optimizing your b vitamin intake helps conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. So if someone's not getting optimal amounts of folate, b6, b12 etc it tends to inhibit maximal conversion.
Nonetheless, ALA has it's benefits which are unique to ALA, though DHA from fish is your best bet for optimal health.
I support your inference that omega-3 acids are very important. However, there is a need for a clearer presentation of what we know so far. Not all formulations
of omega-3 have shown to be equally effective.
I would be interested to hear Dr Rhoda Patrick’s take on C15 fatty acid.
Its the new essential fatty acid better than Omega3, Rapamycin, Metamorphin and acarbose
Just brilliant! In a nutshell, evidence based scientific research that can change our lives, longevity and well-being. And great debunking of the fear mongering associated with eating fish, seafood and mercury content. Such critically important information and has been shared with family, friends everywhere. Many thanks Rhonda!
Thanks for all the great information. If you take Vascepa, which contains only EPA, should you also supplement with DHA? Thanks for your response.
Very helpful, excellent slides too
Is it true that fish oil (say cod liver oil) may aggravate or cause a mild form of afib? If true than why and how does this sometimes occur with supplementation??
Need to be careful with almonds - although high in Magnesium also very high in Omega 6

The concentration of Omega-3 in marine plants too low. You will need a ton of it every day.
Nordic Naturals is best.

Thank you for the info. I grew up getting no Omega 3s. Parents still get none.
I love smoked wild caught salmon with my eggs for breakfast. However, I heard that counted as "processed meat" and was bad for you just like processed deli meats are and you should avoid it. Any thoughts on that?
All meat is processed
Thats ridiculous. Thats a very healthy meal. Everything wont be perfect. We have to do our best.
I don’t eat seafood, not even Wisconsin Cod (I’m from Wisconsin) and so this is why I take a top shelf omega 3 and Omega 6 blend of fish oil because it does help my digestive tract and brain function.
Mainly because of the fishy smell 👃🏽 I cannot get it past my nose. Just start gagging.
Dr. Patrick, do you regard it as generally safe for a person, in overall general good health, to consume wild caught salmon or sardines on a daily basis?
Does anyone have an opinion on (UK) Seven Seas Max Strength 1250 mg Omega 3 Fish Oil? I recently bought a 30 pack of capsules (March, 2024) with a best before end date of May, 2026. Will they not go rancid in this time which is over 2 years? Thanks in a advance for any replies.
How much EPA and DHA in milligrams should I be aiming to have a day? thank you
Thank you for clearing a very complicated deficiency issue. “Nothing to do with plant based or marine omegas. Everything to do with our own genetic expressions.”
How would “icosapent ethy” interact with the genetic mutations that doesn’t take advantage of the omegas?
Flax seed is very poorly absorbed no matter what. Most people only take in less than 1%. Waste of money.
What about the 2018 Cochrane review that suggests omega 3 supplements don't help anything?
Few facts :
1. Your body needs an optimal Balance between omega 3 and omega 6, and NOT very low omega 6.
2. Your body needs Full spectrum omegas and not just omega 3. Full spectrum omega complex will have omegas 3-5-6-7-9-11 !
Thank you, Rhonda. Viewing this video made me take omega-3 supplement

Question: if the only oil I eat is Ghee (also don't eat any nuts or dryfruits), do I still need to take omega 3s?
Yes. Omega-3 fatty acids only can be obtained by the diet or by supplemantation. Eat sardines or buy a high quality fish oil.
EPA is only from marine source, but should be ok if majority of omega 3 come from elsewhere.
Crazy. High epa affects my moods for the positive which is supported by studies
What is CLO?
So can we suppliments with fish oil and effectively raise our index ?
What if someway the pathways for all these vitamins and minerals are blocked they can’t absorb they do. You know good receptor sites are blocked by all kinds of chemicals added to foods and then people over eat their style malnourished
