I have been taking Cod Liver Oil for 30 Years guaranteed from cold water fish. I started after living with knee pain when in my fifties. I am 87 now in perfect health, with absolutely no joint pain. The reason I continued it! Almost every one I know have had serious joint problems.
I had a stroke 18 months ago and I started taking fish oil and craving/eating tinned salmon afterwards. A year later all the grey matter in my brain had grown back, there was no tissue damage on the MRI. The neurologist said it was a miracle, the tissue isn’t supposed to grow back apparently. My mind is probably sharper in some ways that it was before the stroke. I truly believe this is down to fish oil and salmon. When I have a craving day I find I have some more recovery improvement a few weeks after. I still have a few minor issues with my affected side, but each day I get better and stronger. My triglycerides were extremely high. They are very sticky and can clog the arteries leading to a heart attack or stroke. My D.O. recommended taking 2 1200 mg of Omega 3 Fish Oil daily. This brought the triglycerides down to normal within 6 months.

I asked AI to sum up what this video said and it said "Fish oil is an essential source of omega-3 fatty acids which are important for brain function and growth and development. There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids, but the most important ones are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines. If you don’t eat fish regularly, you can take fish oil supplements to get enough omega-3 fatty acids. However, it is important to choose a good brand of fish oil that concentrates the fish oils and extracts them very carefully to leave all the heavy metals and PCBs behind. Fish oil helps normalize inflammatory responses which can help prevent chronic low grade inflammation that causes cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic disease and other degenerative diseases. Fish oil is also a precursor for hormones and chemical messengers and builds cell membranes which are critical for every cell in the body to function properly. If you are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, taking fish oil supplements can help improve your health. A good brand of fish oil will usually have a three to two ratio of EPA versus DHA. However, some people need different ratios of EPA to DHA depending on what they’re looking for."
My aunt lived on a farm in Canada when there is little sunlight in the winter and she was out in the harsh elements daily. She took Cod Liver oil everyday and at 60 she had the most beautiful skin I had ever seen.
Went to a neurologist to test my legs to see if my OA was interfering with the nerves to my feet. After describing the constant pain I was in the doctor off-handedly suggested I take fish oil. I sort of blew him off but within 6 months my outdoor heavy maintenance job was taking a painful toll on me. I had run marathons and lifted heavy weights all my life in the military and the AO was killing me. One day in desperation I took a whole handful of fish oil capsules and was literally pain-free for three days. That was 15 years ago. Since then I’ve cut back dramatically on all carbs and starches, lost 35 lbs and have been able to cut back to just five capsules a day. I maintain by walking a couple miles a day, biking, lifting and watching my diet and am retired, living a virtually pain free life. I guess I’m enjoying the other benefits of taking omega 3 as a sideline!
@@dshingle6ha ha ha, that's really funny 😁 but I'd have to agree with you. Anything to take away the pain and we all know even dog turds are probably better for us than the pharmaceutical crap that's being prescribed by most doctors. I have to say your comment really touched me because I've seen tons of people comment about the miracle pill or supplement their taking to ease their pain. But never really thought they knew true pain. Your response of you willing to take dog turds if it helped your pain told me that you know real pain. Although funny but true. My pain is destroying my life from RA and fibromialgia. Just recently my doc told me I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. I believe God leads us to the answers we're looking for if we listen close enough. Thanks so much for mentioning what brands you take too. I plan on looking for some this weekend, provided I can actually get to the store😅😊. God bless you and thank you for your service, it's everything 🤗
As a child growing up in the 60's, my mom made us take cod liver oil! It kept our immune system strong and we never had any colds, respiratory problems or allergies!
@@jakemelinko Sure, some people might have good health without supplements, but Glen's point was about his experience. Just because you didn’t need fish oil doesn’t invalidate the benefits it provided for others, especially in the 60s when access to modern medicine and nutrition wasn’t as advanced as it is now. Cod liver oil has been proven to boost immunity and overall health, so maybe instead of dismissing someone else’s experience, you could appreciate that different things work for different people.
I was raised in England after the war and every household was given Cod Liver Oil for children because Rickets was prominent. As a retired Flight Attendant with Air Canada I took Cod Liver oil when there was a R in the month, re no sun. Food today doesn’t have the nutrients in it. By the time fruit is harvested in California etc., then radiated at the border it has lost everything good. Same as meat and Chickens all injected with antibiotics and kept in small places. I now live in Victoria British Columbia where I go to the farm and get my eggs and see the chickens running around. Fresh fruit and vegetables without spray. Grass fed meat. Salmon straight out of the ocean. However, I still take a teaspoon of the best Norwegian Cod liver oil. I am 78 years old with no aches or pains and perfect eyesight with good bones. Having a Tuscan mother has influenced me. Your right I pay for the best Norwegian Cod Liver oil, expensive but worth it. Again you are right, I believe my cod liver oil is a preventative not a cure. The rubbish I see in peoples supermarket trolley today causes many problems to the body. The laziness by buying prepackaged food to stick in the microwave is like eating cardboard when it comes to nutrients. Thank you for your channel.
I have read hundreds of not thousands of comments on various subjects from many holistic docs on here. Your comment is one of the best because you write it in a genuine way. Yes I agree with all of it. Seafood especially salmon and taking cod liver is preventive and works like magic compared to all the other so called fake food. In fact, there is no comparison . Thanks for posting.
Thanks Doc. The big message for me was that supplements provides the resources that help normalize body functions. It doesn’t act like a medication that controls or suppresses a symptom.
Thank you @Vincentorix. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You for actually watching the video. It warms my heart. So many of the comments unfortunately show that a lot of people completely missed the point. 😄
Ask yourself when you take the supplement 1.Are you Deficient? 2.What does it really do ?Or what happened if fish oil deficiency? 3.What kind do I take…EPA for heart 3:2 DHA for brain or 5:1 Tuna omega oil🤔 …If you not a big fan of fish in every meal so take it properly to normalize optimum and balance body function…Love Dr.Sten Ekberg lecture 🙏🏼 Student from Thailand. Thank you for sharing and educated this.
I had a 2 in 1 stroke caused by covid. I was in a coma for 2 weeks. When I was released. My left eye was looking at my nose. I couldn't keep my balance. Couldn't remember anything short term. Would forget I was cooking. Couldn't follow a conversation. Would start talking and literally could see the word nut couldn't speak it. After 4 months, I researched the strokes I had. The brain. Got the vitamins, protein shakes. I still had problems eating. Started practicing balance. Played cognitive games and made random lists and tried to remember them. After a year, I found out about a DNA test through a dietician. I was put on 2000mg Omega 3, magnesium, homocysteine, and vivamixx for the gut. 3 years after the strokes, I'm off chronic meds, feel much better. Have some loss of smell, still have moments of stroke fog usually when I'm stressed. I always think of supplements as exactly that. Supplements the body's intake or lack thereof. Oh, still have sleep issues. 🌻
This video cleared up the mystery of why my mom gave me cod liver oil when I was little. Thanks so much for the details! I'm 72 now and started taking it again about 10 years ago.
Just another great video by Dr. Ekberg! I used to suffer from eczema and read up about how skin inflammation can be caused by a suboptimal omega3:omega6-ratio. Since taking fish oil, the eczema is almost completely gone!
@@USA-RIG-WELDER about 6 weeks. Your body slowly switches out lipids in your skin, so missing a day of supplementation isnt bad either. Takes some time though

I wish that the information given here by Dr. Ekberg had been available through our NHS health services during pregnancy, or even before thinking of becoming pregnant. That would have been even better for baby health. Since finding Dr. Ekberg's channel in 2020, my understanding of nutrition has changed completely, and for the better. Why our NHS has not invested in this type of education is a mystery to me, because so very many health problems could be alleviated or eradicated if nutrition was promoted.
The UK doesn't invest in health as Germany, the Netherland etc have & culturallly the UK is particularly insular; it has no contextual appreciation of how far below par it is in relation to many European countries.
After taking a tablespoonful of cod liver oil on Monday Wednesday and Friday for about six months I began feeling really I’ll. An endocrinologist diagnosed vitamin A toxicity. So be careful.
A Tablespoon is too much to take regularly, eating fish is better, we do need omega 3, it's an essential fatty acid our cells need that we have to get from our diet and also our bodies make endocannabinoids (think cannabis) from omega 6 and 3 which work like thc and cbd respectively - cbd and omega 3 balance whearas thc and omega 6 'anandamide' - activates cannabinoid receptors, they work like a power button and dimmer switch and we need both in the correct ratio...

I have a bottle of fish oil capsules, a good brand, in the fridge and I take one occasionally. But I also eat fish at least twice a week. Thanks for the analysis and information 😮!!
Eating fish nowadays poses a significant issue due to two main factors: the elevated mercury levels and the release of discarded plastic fuel additives from vehicle exhaust. This concern has arisen following the recent approval by the EPA of a fuel ingredient, which carries a lifetime cancer risk more than 1 million times higher than the agency's typical acceptable threshold. Consequently, depending on one's location, what was once considered a superfood, fish, may no longer be a healthy choice
It is mindboggling to see Dr. writing from the other side and still not writing flipped. Great production value in addition to great health related information.

Algae Oil is in most cases produced on land, therefore it is free of toxins. It is higher in DHA than EPA. There's also DPA which the body can convert to either EPA or DHA as needed. A bottle with the liquid oil has advantages over capsules: When you take the oil with a spoon, you taste if it is rancid. Capsules typically also cost more than bottled from the same manufacturer.
@@conniekampas7074 You most likely have heard about fish oil. Algae are plants that grow in water (aquatic plants). many are microscopically small. Some algae produce omega 3 fatty acids. The algae are eaten by small animals (krill). The small animals are eaten by fish. That's how the fish get their omega 3. It all starts with the algae. The advantage is that algae can be grown in a facility on land where you have salt water that is free of heavy metals which are in the ocean. With fish oil, the manufacturers have to filter out the contaminants. I am not sure if that always works 100%. I am taking a brand that is sold in Germany. The name probably won't help you and youtube would potentially flag this as spam. If you do a little bit of research, I am sure that you will find a brand you are willing to trust that sells in the country you are are.
I've been using fish oil caps for more than thirty years. In my younger years, I was a jogger and I had started feeling some twinges in my knees. Shortly after I started the F.O. there were no more twinges. These days I usually only do fast walking and I have no pain in my joints so I will continue using F.O. caps.
I only eat Fish oil and cod liver oil. Never knew Tuna omega until today. I need it for my daily stress, inflammatory and heart... I rarely eat fish because Im bad at deboning them.
I always buy fish frozen without bones. Mostly wild caught Alaskan salmon. It goes in the oven until it reaches 145F. I just have to scrape off the skin when it's done. Always tastes great.
I have an incurable bone disease and take cod liver oil not fish oil daily. If i don't my pain levels rise. My elderly dog has arthritis and she seems more active on it too.
I eat canned cod liver once per week (the actual liver. not just oil. it is actually not as bad as you might think. it is ok tasting). I get it from Amazon. I don't eat it more frequently because it has a lot of vitamin A and D and it is not good to get too much of the fat soluble vitamins. I also eat canned sardines once or twice per week. I can't prove if it is helping me or not, but I believe it provides my body what it needs.
Thank you for the informative Video Sir. Couple of questions... 1) Do all fish contain the needed Omega oils required? 2) Can the way fish is prepared/cooked affect the ultimate Omega intake for any or all persons?
Something most people who say things related to omega 3s is that ALA has very different conversion ratio between men and women (which convert almost around 4 times more) and then there's the fact that body increases the conversation ratio up to a certain point if it "senses" there's a need to do so and it can, because the conversion process requires energy an other nutrients among other things.
Dr. Sten: I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin in the 50s and 60s. The only fish we ate, and not regularly, were perch, blue gills, crappie, and walleye. Otherwise a lot of milk, cheese, beef, pork, chicken, canned and frozen veggies/fruits. We had NO supplements. I'm a chemical engineer with a 130 IQ. Help me connect the dots on how my brain developed with no cold water ocean fish. Now we eat salmon about twice a week.
Cattle, particularly grass-fed cattle, has a good proportion of Omega-3s to Omega 6s. So any fats (including butter and cream) from those cows will give you Omega-3s. It's not as good as the proportion in fatty fish, but it's better than the amount in any other food
@@nataliajimenez1870Thank you. Good to know. Our beef was Holstein (the cows) and Angus artificial insemination cross bred steers. I use cod liver oit, it is expensive per bottle, but with the amount you need the costs per day are not so much. I do notice it does really help with dry lips for example. I really dislike fish foods, and i don't like the structure of organ meats so getting it out of foods can be difficult for me
Thank you for the video, and all the effort you put into it. I was wondering if there's a way to know if the good brands are rancid or not. I've heard most fish oil is rancid and toxic. Just curious about what you thought. Hope you and yours have a nice weekend!
This is why I eat sardines, ground flax, chia seeds. Omegas are notoriously sensitive to light and heat. Best to get them into the diet via high quality natural sources. But if you have chronic disease or insulin resistance the conversion won't be good. Nevertheless, it's working for me.
I was having neck & shoulder pain, it was making g me miserable. I took 1000mg of cod liver oil and the pain/inflammation greatly reduced. Recommend for anyone with arthritis or fibromyalgia
I started taking cod liver oil a few months ago, sometimes remembered, sometimes didn't, early on, last couple of months have been pretty consistent. I have recently been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis, and have just been grabbing at whatever might help...anything. Anyhoo, I started taking Vit D religiously at the start of covid, 10,000 ius, just in case, dropped back to 5000 maybe two years ago. So, I was taking a healthy amount, so much my husband started fearing I must have toxic levels. But in March, when I started seeing a naturopath, but before I had made many other changes, my Vit D level was 44. Decent but not ODing, for sure. I continued to take the 5000 iu with the cod liver oil, because I'd read it was better absorbed with fat. Oh man, was it ever. In August endocrinologist tested D, I was at 107. After 3 1/2 years of pretty hefty doses and still being at 44, to jump to 107 seems like I really wasn't absorbing it well. Now, I am. And yes, I'm doing the cod liver oil only, no additional D. at least for now.
Brilliant video as always! Confirms to me some things learned about omega 3 vs omega 6 in a book I read called ‘why we eat too much’ which was an excellent book. Thanks as always :)

Some advice on canned cod liver in its own oil. Open the can and consume immediately. You can use the oil for salad, it's delicious. You may conserve the oil one or perhaps more days (didn't try for more than one day) IN THE FREEZER (it stays liquid). Fridge is not sufficient, it will go rancid within very few hours.
I can only find expensive ones with low mg of dha here in Sweden. They're like 50-150 mg of DHA and always poor ratio to EPA. I'm a Swede trying to buy something from another Swede but there's only shipping within the US, globalization is so great :).
I have taken fish oil (prescription strength) for many years, because of insurance. I don't think it's done much if anything. I recently went on a strict diet and noticed a huge difference in my triglycerides. My triglycerides have always been high, but only went down when I went on a strict diet, which included cutting drinking. I asked AI to sum up what this video said and it said
"Fish oil is an essential source of omega-3 fatty acids which are important for brain function and growth and development.

How can you sure there is a causal link?
@@jamesjiaoshe didn’t say there was a causal link.

As a child growing up in the 60's, my mom made us take cod liver oil! It kept our immune system strong and we never had any colds, respiratory problems or allergies!
I had all that without fish oil so....
Cod liver oil has been proven to boost immunity and overall health, so maybe instead of dismissing someone else’s experience, you could appreciate that different things work for different people.
lucky to have a mom like that!

Take also D3 and K2, Magnesium, Zinc those are the basics.

What is algae oil . And what is a great brand to take.
2) Can the way fish is prepared/cooked affect the ultimate Omega intake for any or all persons?
tuna mackerel sardine and herring have the most amounts of omegas, as far as I know. they're soo nutritious among all other fishes in several minerals

This is why I eat sardines, ground flax, chia seeds. Omegas are notoriously sensitive to light and heat. Best to get them into the diet via high quality natural sources. But if you have chronic disease or insulin resistance the conversion won't be good. Nevertheless, it's working for me.
Hands down the most informative information clip on fish oil. Thank you, Dr Ekberg.

I take Moller's Omega 3 cod liver oil capsules. I used to have awful headaches whenever I had my period, which are now gone. I know it's only anecdotal, but I fully believe they helped me and will continue taking them.
👍 I also take moller's... but the oil. It tastes really clean, not fishy. You can get it also with a taste, they have citrus(from the peel) and berry.
Salmon 5X per week for me.
I think drinking hits triglycerides hard, along with the obvious ones we all know about.
Ive just looked at label on my Fish Oils and along with the EPA and DPA my Fish Oils contain Sunflower Oil. Straight in the bin. Lesson for all, READ THE LABELS on everything.

What about krill oil?

I used to take fish oil supplements earlier , prescribed by my naturopathic doctor before my cancer and chemo radiation (and portal hypertension due to chemo side effects happened ) 😢- now my gastro has told me not to take fish oil supplements as it may cause bleeding , he said and more ,as I have a tendency to bleed due to chemo damaged parts and portal vein hypertension/ so he said avoid salt or take salt substitutes or very little salt in diet and avoid fish oil , it’s not needed ! 😮is that true ,Doc? I feel fish oil capsules helped a lot with my triglycerides “ brand levels and kept my sugars and BP in check too- I didn’t have any diabetes or BP when I took those during younger days - it acted like a general health tonic, and kept all my blood levels normal -now he said to stop it after my cancer so I had stopped taking and all my lipid panel levels etc became worse ! Though it was a good supplement which kept my organs running smoothly I feel - now I have been told not to take it - since I don’t eat fish( being a vegetarian eat only plant based foods ), I still take a fish oil supplement now and then ( started recently two weeks back) just one capsule of metagenics “ brand 0:01 fish oil one capsule every other day! Do you think it will cause any problems or more bleeding issues Doc? Thanks doc - appreciate all your helpful videos! 🙏🙏💖
You shouldn’t. I am a medical student here, the doc asked u not to take because it can interact with some drugs and it might also cause your blood to thin out more leading to more bleeding
@@AkaSingh-fe6qdthank you for your info..God bless you🙏🇵🇭
We all also need a CT Heart Calcium scan. Mine just came back with really high numbers and I eat well, don't drink or smoke, and exercise all the time. Huge eye opener.
Do you take Calcium?
Do you take D3 vitamins without K2? If you don’t take K2 this will drive Calcium where you don’t want it.
Does Fish Oil increase uric acid levels ?
You must not over take fish oil it will cause AFib. A lower does is better than overdosing.
Can you discuss the controversy / arguments that DHA or (EPA and DHA) in some studies were associated with increased rate of prostate cancer? Would you give credence more to either side?
